Jenna Tomlin

I love this boat. What a fantastic special.

I brilliant special. Phil Harding is the best! Always puts a smile on my face. Looking at that reproduction boat, it looked way too narrow to sail, let alone carry all that weight. (and Phil) What do I know... Brilliant craftsmanship gentlemen. A really interesting, well put together special. Thank you all for your continued archeological work and entertainment. Time Team is The Best. Can't wait for more in 2024!

Fantastic, I've never built a boat & this was a real cracker of a build by a special group who didn't know the meaning of the word no. I'm sure that there are many who are glad they kept going. 10 yrs ago I suppose some in the group have moved on to other areas but thank you so much for doing what you have done & a special thanks to Time Team for being involved.

Thank you for explaining! That seems pretty wild to a land lubber like me!

Sawdust/Saucepan trick Hi I called it that. Basically the boatyard where I kept my wooden boat had an old saucepan strapped to a broom handle. Once the boat had been allowed to β€˜take up’ ie the water had swollen the seams and the leaks were slowing; then they would fill up the saucepan with sawdust and plunge it into the water beside the hull, giving it a twist to allow the sawdust to float up. This would then clog the last few gaps. Repeat as needed. It really worked and was/is used around the classic wooden boats in Norfolk UK. The wood yards used to put out their sawdust for people to help themselves at one time.

how does the 'saucepan trick' work, and why is it called that?

So true -- I was astounded by that as well. I had a clinker-built sailboat for playing in the park (it was actually a shipwright's model), so before we took her sailing in the pond, she would spend the night in the bathtub.

Amazing

Oh dear it had me shouting at the screen all over again 🀣 If you have wooden boats to launch you let them take up water so that the joints swell. It’s basic. Fill it with water for a day or two then pump out or let it sink even in the slings. I have seen both done. Next use the sawdust under the boat in the old saucepan trick. The sawdust floats up and clogs gaps. Most of the wood yards put out their sawdust for people to take. It seemed that nobody knew what was common knowledge in many boatyards. Nonetheless it was great to see it again. Happy New Year
