🕑 Added 2024-06-15 19:09:13 +0000 UTCIt's been another busy week here at Sutton Hoo, and we're thrilled to share some early highlights from Week 2, including a few very exciting developments to end on...

WORD OF THE DAY
Before watching, please take note of our latest 'Word of the Day', courtesy of Lawrence: 'Phenomenology'
“Phenomenology is commonly described as the study of phenomena as they manifest in our experience, of the way we perceive and understand phenomena, and of the meaning phenomena have in our subjective experience. More simply stated, phenomenology is the study of an individual's lived experience of the world.”

Wow wow wow! That is some amazing geophys 🤩🤩

Another boat burial??? - Go Time Team!!
Korey
Wow, if that is a boat, it would be a significant find! I must admit I'm jealous of the history...we have our history here in the USA but not like over there.
Larry Besel, Jr.
I thoroughly enjoy watching Derek and Lawrence enjoy archeology!
Elizabeth Neill
I was excited about it, too. I wonder if the Team will have any opportunity to confirm it's a boat before this dig is over. And, I wondered if it was a boat that sank, or a boat that had been buried on dry land that was now underwater.
Carole Winstanley
Yes, the fabric is linen, it has been saddened and is now looking green, as expected. The onion skins are in the pot next to it, the pot with the bright yellow and a mordant is being used. We have found that they retain their colour rather well. The clips of film shown here were just a few seconds spliced together of a few hours of filming. Copper pots were also being used that day. But you're right in saying..... "Unpredictable". Thanks for your comment
Kathy Ball
I'm literally stood on the hill looking down to where they are doing a test pit 🤩.....I'd love to be able to walk down and watch but I think I'll probably get thrown out 😭
Jude Meehan
Oh my gosh! A boat! I got goosebumps when I saw the image. This is unbelievably exciting; actually no, its phenomenal ! :)

Ya, Jimmy has really developed an engaging on-camera presence. Must have gotten it from John Gator (chuckle). 🙄🤭
David Boon
What an ending. Loving these updates.

A word about the dyeing. The fabric in the metal cauldron is, I presume linen? The dyestuff is weld and tansy. The metal of the cauldron (iron?) would be having a saddening effect on the colour obtained, that is a darkening of the colour obtained. That is quite a bright yellow, particularly on linen, so I’d love to hear more about that. With regard to the onion skin. Once again a lovely colour, but sadly it is transient, so fades quite quickly in sunlight. As always it is hard to make definite rules about natural plant dying as rarely two batches turn out the same. Unpredictable is the word!

😂 not sure about winter here in West Australia. Maybe as a dress on its own or, over skivi top and matching tights. Just enough to keep the cold at bay. Not that we are having much of that so far this winter: usually, sunny days get quite cold and when it rains, it’s more tepid, but this June, we’ve had beautiful sunny days with very little cloud cover. Tomorrow - Tuesday for example, low of 8•c @ ~06:30 and a high of 18•c @ ~ 13:00. Not too hot, not too cold: great Goldilocks weather. 😂🤭😇😎 Hildés hair truly made that blue go ‘pop!’
Patricia Amero
I always think "Beam me up, Scottie!" 🖖🤓
Elessa Wylde
I let out an audible squee when the final images were being shown. Can't wait to learn what has been discovered!
Graham Dombkins

Whenever I see someone using a portable XRF I have to keep telling myself that no, I don't need one
Patricia Amero
I laughed out loud... one minute I'm saying "no way 😲 NO WAY!" the next minute I'm wiping coffee off my screen. They really should warn us 😂
Patricia Amero
👋😊 Welcome aboard, Diane.

Excellent! Best musical response to a question ever!
Elizabeth Neill
That overdress was a lovely color. Hilde's going to start a new fashion trend. Everyone will want one!
Don Cook
Loved the entire video.....very funny (Derek and Lawrence), glamorous (Hilda) and maybe another boat burial? Great Fun!
Leitchy
Fantastic if the geophys found another boat. And Hilda absolutely looked the part in the Anglo-Saxon dress and head scarf. Not that she doesn't look stunning in filthy jeans & t-shirt! 😘
Chris
Thank you Helen that you asked, "Phenomenology", I never knew this word exists. 👨🎓
Michelle Cailes
So good to see that Stewart has lost his bubble head. Derek and Lawrence along with Helen are Ab Fab. Knowing we have to wait until 2025 to see the actual complete show is mental. I want a blue outer dress like the one Hilde wore. Keep up the great work guys. Thanks from Australia. 🇦🇺 😩 Boat or Land Drains. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Rob Federle
I realize that Time Team on YouTube has the closed captions, and sometimes they are slightly comical. I was hoping that the subtitles might be applied to the Patreon videos when they’re dropped on the Patreon software, rather than having to wait until they drop on YouTube. Small request but definitely not a deal breaker. Thanks again!
Mary Lu Perham
Great stuff! Enjoying every minute of it!
Cheryl Kurucz
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Shane Roelofs
Go GEOPHYS!!!!!!!!!!
James D Speckart
I hope the next episode is about the phenomenology of discovering a previously unknown boat burial at Sutton Hoo!
Eggs Ackley
Loved Jimmy’s comment, “I don’t have a reputation anymore…too many years on TT.” 😜
Kerry Hennigan
0h wow, from the solder to the blue outfit so beautifully modelled by Hilde to ... another boat burial??? Oh happy day 🎉
Jen A
Wait…what? What a cliffhanger!
Rick Shepard
Well that was tantalizing...
Cathy Martichenko-Grilz
Incredible clip! I can’t wait for the next update. Thank you! I hope next week goes well for the team.
Kate
YouTube has closed captioning. Sometimes it's weird, but Time Team's seem pretty accurate, except for Sutton Who ;-) Look for the little CC in the upper right corner to turn them on.
Octavia Gentemann-Schmidt
wow. well good luck then - let's find another one!
nic vipond
Wow. Another boat.. possibly????? 💪🕺
Julianne Ture
Same!
Irene Daly
sorry! I cannot wait to see if it really is a boat.
Irene Daly
How cruel! The video ended just as we discover the possible find of the century! I can’t wait to see if it really.
Leanne
Simply Fantastic!!! I look forward to my email, hoping for some new tantalizing information or experience (from afar) that Time Team has produced. This journey has been wonderful.
Loz
I reacted exactly the same way when he said that! 😆

Woad dyeing AND a boat?!! I’m in archaeology heaven.
Stuart Birch
I had a wonderful day a the site on Friday, and the highlight was John giving a few of us some insight into the geo-phys in the area including the new "boat"! Oh, and finding my name on this year's flag.
Kate
Holy crap! You found another boat ?!?! We don't need no stinkin' land drains! Find of a lifetime, John and Jimmy! Well done! Beyond excited to have TT make more history.

Great update. Loved that. A boat !
Andrew Lavey
Excellent results.
Rob Federle
Excellent episode! The effects of new emerging technologies is really astounding and exciting. I’m a Patreon from the start and feel very proud of any small part that I may share in these results. I would like to offer one small suggestion. I realize that there are many factors such as wind noise that are hard to compensate for. I would appreciate, given all limiting factors, if subtitles were available before the videos are available on Time Team Official with subtitles. Thanks again and I anxiously await all the updates to come.
Jane Parker
Wow! Boat!!!!!!!
JanD
Time Team is a 'lived experience'. Onwards with the updates!
Leanne
The thought of another boat being discovered is very exciting!
