As a Navy guy the purpose of the small arms fire was not to do any damage to the sub but to keep the crew of the sub from reaching their deck guns and returning fire. You simply are trying to keep their sailors from their fire stations.

I never knew that the Winchester would have seen Naval service, and yeah it totally makes sense there. I do recall a Joseph Conrad "Heart of darkness" reference, "The pilgrims had opened with their Winchesters, and were simply squirting lead into that bush. A deuce of a lot of smoke came up and drove slowly forward. I swore at it."

Possibly, but I know the training included having members of the crew fake abandoning ship by dropping lifeboats and panicking as well. I think there was a need to tie the German crew up as long as possible to get a full surface and avoid any calls to fire torpedoes.

It's awesome you chose a classic American carbine for your July 4th episode. Makes me happy. Sadly, I don't have an original Winchester 1892, but I have a replica/copy made by Rossi/Puma that is my current deer rifle in Indiana. Like you said, it's amazing that people still use a gun that was made a century and a quarter ago. By the way, I watched the episode twice now and couldn't tell what was changed. It must have been subtle. P.S. I missed the picture down the sights. :( Maybe you'll have it in the next episode. *Russian Winchester* *Cough cough*.

Nice surprise when I saw 1892 Winchester in the title. And Mae knows a great firearm when she comes across one! Being left handed I found lever guns much more accommodating to my disability than bolt actions and own many. You guys haven't done the 1895 yet, have you? Mae will love that one too.

Othias: @ ~20min mark when you're talking about the use by the crew of a Q-ship, I think you're missing the point here: the Q-ship 3pdr guns have to be uncovered and put into play while the thoroughly-trained & -practiced German U-boat crew is bringing *their* deck gun into action. Having the bulk of the crew of the Q-ship lined up at the rail suddenly whip out & unload their carbines at said German crew will go a long way toward suppressing the fire from *their* deck gun while the rest of the Q-ship crew unlimbers their 3pdr guns & holes the sub... Nobody was claiming the Winchesters sunk the sub! ;-) Edit: watching the video further, the .44-40 is notorious for being difficult to get great [not acceptable, but great] accuracy from due to the wonky subtle case bottleneck and evolving bore diameter [.427" then, often .429" in modern repops, & who knows how your ammo was loaded?] I'm going to give Mae a bye on this one. And she'd make a great Coastie! ;-)
