Great video all! I have always found French weapons to be wonderfully weird. Hope one day to see a Mle 1907 video one day. Even if there is no shooting- the history and mechanics of that Edwardian clockwork monster would be fascinating.

Seems like we can safely say that 1914-1918 was the Prototype War for the automatic rifle. I'm not sure if the Chauchat is truly Genesis for the stamped metal gun, but it's amusing to think of the MG-42, the HK, and the G3 all calling it "Grandpa". . .

Nope, it will likely be near the end of WWI as it has the most pressure on it of any firearm from the war. Can't even begin to work on it without a LOT of breathing room. We also already have memo data that contradicts basically every book out there in little ways soo...

I don't think it should be called a machine gun. More like an automatic rifle. That bipod would expose the gunners to sharpshooter (snipers). No wonder they were in short supply. Good video, waiting for the '06 version.

C'est Magnifique! C'est Merveilleux! For whatever reason steampunk seems to me to be the essence of French design. Like the Citroen 2CV or la tour Eiffel. Maybe it's the Jules Verne effect? Assuming Mae is the size of the average French Poilu if they thrown around as much as she was while firing the Chauchat in the prone position I'm amazed they could get follow up rounds within a football field of their point of aim. Great show guys. Looking forward to the '06 version coming soon to a small screen near me

There was mention of using cut back Lebel barrels but I got the impression the Chauchat had some sort of barrel extension in back, is that extension attached to the barrel somehow?
