Yeah...The Textbook sets out the pros and cons of each system but one key point echoes what Othias said "The action (of a revolver) is not dependent on the cartridge..." and the "few seconds "it takes to clear a missfire in a self-loader ..."may be fatal".

I've been saving this one until I had time to appreciate it. While watching the animation my first thought was "God, that's complicated..." And yet...the 1929 British "textbook for small arms" is unequivocal - "No self-loading pistol is yet as reliable as a revolver, nor does it hit as effective a blow". In 1899 I might agree. In 1929???

I believe that I have a Colt New Service marked 45 LC and 455 Ely. Thank you for your information regarding how to tell a shaved cylinder. Mine has a proof mark on the face of the cylinder as well as proof marks on the frame. I contacted Colt and paid for research. Sadly they wrote me that because this revolver was part of a shipment either to Canada or GB there was no paper trail. If you might be interested in using this for an episode, let me know. It retains much of it high blue finish and according to my gunsmith has not beeb reblued or refurbished. Again thank you for the information I always look forward to them and learned a great deal from you both.

To put this into modern perspective: today's spot price for gold is $1350/oz, and the $15.50 price Colt charged the Canadians works out to about 3/4 of a double eagle $20 gold coin [roughly 1oz, less seignorage], so ~$1k/ea at modern prices. Colt isn't doing revolvers these days, but you can get a modern S&W from the Custom Shop for not too much more than that today, and one of their standard retail units for a bit less. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose... ;-)

About the Colt’s latch requiring a shift from the firing grip to use; modern revolver reload technique is to shift the gun to the weak hand, so it’s not much of an issue. Not sure what they taught 100 years ago.

I had a New Police mfg in 1901, nifty little gun, and I mean little. Don't imagine it inspired mutch confidence with anyone who had been used to .44 and .45 calibers

This one is probably the most military bc crap it's heavy. The rest are much smoother.

Did someone perform a trigger job on the Colt? Most of the New Service that I've handled and shot are heavy just as a service pistol is supposed to be. The V mainspring stacked when in double action shooting unless someone expertly put a file to it. The New Service and the big S&W are too big for my hands. Even the 1911 is too big. My stature is like... well think Shanghai Municipal Police Force. I was the Asian and they were issued Colt hammerless 1903s so as to fit their hands. Good video. Nice and short. :)

Wow! That Colt is a beauty! Much as I enjoy the steampunk cool aspect of a Webley the Colt is the one I would prefer for SHTF events. In your discussion of the weight you didn't mention something I've always assumed was a natural consequence of a heavy sidearm, the Sam Browne belt. What do you think? Great job guys as always. BTW how do I add a third t-shirt to my order?
