To address your original question, no it's not feasible to produce in today's economy. The machining on the slide alone would price it out of current markets, not to mention the costs to redesign the safety and mag release, as well as the tooling design and setup because it hasn't been around since the 20's. At best you'd end up with some kind of travesty like Remington's re-imagining of the model 51. Even a straight reproduction would be questionable; e.g. reintroducing a model of the colt 1903 pocket hammerless gave colt fans an overpriced, parkerized, piece of nostalgia and caused chaos in the collector marker, most notably artificially driving up prices on old pistols. I do own a 1907 and love it, it's fun to shoot and a great conversation piece. I think the possibilities of where handgun design might gone if military sales were better is intriguing . And it's fun to point out to the wonder-nine crowd that a military, striker-fired, doublestack magazine, pistol with no screws that could be stripped without tools was in service in 1915.

Certainly. She was a magazine fed semi-auto pistol. Given the massive pistol shortage in WWI, I would imagine she would have been considered very useful. I mean would a British Webley Fosbery really be that much more suitable for pilots over a C-93?

Ever since the Carcano rifle has gone onto the surplus market people all around the world have criticized its simplicity, low cost and quality. In the 21st century the Carcano to me resembles the modern bolt action high value rifles today like the Ruger American and Savage Axis for instance which many hunters and sportsman love. Do you find it funny and odd that the most hated military rifle from the 20th century is now leading the way in bolt design for modern high value bolt action rifles? Why has the Mauser action fallen out of favor? Keep up the good work love your show!

Easy. First and foremost, do what Greece, Romania, and Serbia did and declare war on your main arm supplier. Rifle and carbine? Ross Mk II no stars in.280 Ross. Auto pistol? Glisenti 1910, but you buy your 9x19 ammo from Germany, because it’s the same, right? LMG? Madsen. Not because they’re bad, but because you’ll never get any. And while we’re not getting shit, buy your machine guns from Colt. It doesn’t matter which one. None of it really matters though, because by the end of 1916 you’re going to be getting Berthiers (if you’re an Entente ally) or ragged out Gew 88’s or captured Mosins (if you’re a Central Powers ally).

You have said this before, it's always I had my pistol, or my shovel, Tom in the back had a 32 automatic. We saw that wall crumpled and the light come through. Tom shot however many rounds through the hole, I cocked back my revolver and let a few rounds off. Jimmothy threw a bomb into the hole and that was that. I listen to librivox and listen to alot of old accounts from WW1 in the public domain. I've heard of groups tunneling towards each others lines and stopping where they heard each others picks or shovels. Why were the French and British so resistant to adopting a standard semi-automatic pistol and kept with their revolvers? I know that both purchases some semi-autos (especially the Ruby by France) but this seems to be more out of desperation for war material rather than preference. Was it because both thought revolvers more reliable, the inability to tool up production of a new gun, not wanting to change ammunition (looking at your .455 Webley), or something else? What would you choose in order to make the Elbonian army as ineffective as possible?

Have you seen any training materials on the Steyr-Hahn, either from the manufacturer or the Austro-Hungarian army, that indicate how it was meant to be carried? It's interesting that the safety can only be engaged when the hammer is cocked by pulling the slide back a little bit but engages easily with the hammer down, which actually rotates the hammer slightly out of contact with the firing pin, and cocking the hammer automatically disengages the safety. All this suggests that perhaps it was meant to be carried hammer down on a live round after manually decocking, which was probably less scary to people in 1912 than in it now? In any case thanks for the countless hours of quality, informative content.

Let’s say it’s an inland county with size and terrain similarities to the state of Montana. What rifle, handgun, light machine gun, and heavy machine guns that were available at that time would you choose to issue to your troops? You are also able to select whatever caliber you desire for the arms you choose. For example you can choose a M1917 in 7.62x54R. Go.

I know that most infantrymen liked to have a handgun as a backup, but that handguns were typically not issued to enlisted men. I know that officers were often responsible for providing their own sidearm. I was wondering though if an enlisted infantrymen was able to purchase and carry his own sidearm, or if there were regulations against this during WW1? I imagine he would have been responsible for his own ammo as well if it was not a round in the supply chain. I imagine with the often close quarter nature of trench warfare that handguns would have been in high demand among enlisted men.

This is an interesting question because: As a WWI soldier, would you trust any future weapons that are too different from what you are familiar with? Rifles might seem to crazy, where a high capacity 9mm, say a Glock 17 with 32 round mags, wouldn't be that much different from pistols that already exist. And in a trench raiding situation the pistol might be better tactically. What if the weapon you choose is a Lance Intermediate Missile that you use to nuke Berlin and wipe out all the German leadership. Is killing the 500,000 residents in the blast radius to spare the 2 million soldiers in the trenches?

Totally agree, I had a chance to spend about half a day there in 2015 and was blown away by the collection and displays they had. Seeing Franz Ferdinand's car and bloody uniform was definitely a unique experience, as well as the 1910's used in the plot.

In your research on your upcoming shotgun series. How much/often were the use of shotguns for not just bird hunting and clay shooting but hunting larger four legged animals with larger shot sizes (predators=wolf/coyote/fox/etc game=wild-pigs/deer-drive/etc) refrenced in advertising, magazine articles, and the lore of the time when repeating center-fire shotguns were in their very early years?

I'm aware of two books and one extended journal article that went into detail on the process of manufacturing of specific firearms, United States Rifles and Machine Guns by Fred H. Colvin (1917) which details all the manufacturing specs and processes for the Model 1903 Springfield and Aus der Fertigung des Infanterie-Gewehrs Modell Mauser 98 by Karl Trotter (1937) which details the manufacturing process of the Mauser Gewehr 98. The Journal "Machinery" in the May 1916 article "The Military Rifle - 2" (pg. 780) by Douglas T. Hamilton does so for the Spanish Mauser as well. Are you aware of any similar books or other documents on any other classic firearms, in English or otherwise that go into that sort of detail?

Why were there so many bizarre scope mounting systems before the world settled on mounts wherein "the bottom screws on to the receiver, the top wraps around the scope"? I feel like the answer revolves around stripper clips, which makes even less sense to me for a rifle like the SMLE.

If you guys decide to do a long range segment with say sniper variants whats your opinion of just handloading to same bullet type, weight and mv and firing a few rounds from a lead sled before the actual shooting to have that idividual rifles performance to compare to Mae's performance on range with each rifle. Something of a baseline to see what it can do vs what its problems are in real life shooting with the same shooter kinda eliminating the variance due to problems that rifle might have?

You said you're not covering it in this series, but do you know definitively that the C-93 Borchardt was never used in WWI and if so why was it shunned despite the pistol shortage? For some reason Wikipedia says the C-93 was in service until 1945, but it doesn't specify what "in service" means.

I have a question for you. A lot of the rifles that you feature have very complicated sights with adjustments for windage etc which seem like a soldier would not have time to adjust in the middle of a battle. Outside of specialist personnel like snipers do you know how often these precision sights were adjusted in combat or did troops tend to just set them before a battle and then just leave them alone during a fight? Basically was all the effort put into complicate sights worth it for the avenge infantryman?

Silly question, but in your opinions, what modern military rifle or other firearm, like a carbine or PDW (like a P90 or Othais’s Keltec) would be best suited for use in similar conditions to the Western Front in World War One, i.e. horrible weather, mud and grit, and yet still be cheap and easy to manufacture in a war of attrition?
