I love how both you gents can talk about topics that are really tough, and acknowledge seemingly in one breath that you are not really the right people to talk about how it affected everyone, that its more complex than most of us know, but also not make any excuses for the past. I don't think its a "southern" thing. I think you both understand your own limits enough that it comes across in a way that really hit home in a way that added more clarity to my understanding of the world. Odd that adding complexity adds clarity, but maybe its more adding more resolution to the image. Either way, well done gents.

I'm never going to learn to play the banjo. After hearing this podcast though I subbed to Mr. Hick's youtube channel and have been binge watching his videos. The history is fascinating, and his passion for the subject really comes through. Thanks for turning me on to his content.

Nice episode. The History of everyone going away from the 5 string except the south was interesting to me because of a purchase I made awhile ago. I am a drummer and always looking for vintage drums. I was in an antique store and saw a strange looking banjo in a back corner. I kept on walking because well it's a banjo. But I kept thinking about it and a little later went back for a closer look. Someone had bolted a guitar neck onto a snare drum to make a banjo guitar. As I looked even closer I found the drum the neck was attached to was one of the coveted 1919 Ludwig and Ludwig Nickle on brass two piece shell! Best $125 I ever spent.

Superb episode & I've gone on a search for the banjo pickers of bygone days. Gandpa Jones ... from Hee Haw and David Stringbean Akeman. Yes - now subscribed now to Clifton's YouTube channel. I also enjoyed the history of Clifton's house. Fascinating.

Somewhat off topic but if you're looking for early accounts of American frontier life check out the diary of Charles Woodmason. He traveled around South Carolina in 1760 and wrote a detailed account of how people lived.
