Can Mustard Oil sub in for Caiziyou?

That's right, wouldn't be very good with Cantonese dishes. You could play around with it a bit, but yeah besides Sichuan/Hunan/Guizhou dishes I'd primarily just use it with more intensely flavored dishes. It's got a solid smoke point, so yeah you can deep fry with it... absolutely.

Oh really? Thanks for the warning. You have saved me from spoiling my future dishes. So I take this means mainly spicy and heavily seasoned Chinese dishes correct? Cantonese light and airy dishes for example should not be cooked with Caiziyou oil right? Now I am wondering if it is good for deep frying like peanut oil. Does Caiziyou oil have a high smoke point like peanut oil?

Oh awesome! Not cheap or anything but not a bad price either. You'll definitely notice a difference - just word of warning that I've noticed it's generally not very good to cook things besides SW Chinese food (Sichuan, Hunan, Guizhou)

I found the oil this weekend at the Great Wall Supermarket in Flushing, NY. It comes in a big 5 litter bottle for $30.99 - I was so happy to have found it. Thanks for the information. I can now start cooking your recipes with it, and taste for myself the difference between cooking with Caiziyou oil and peanut oil. BTW the USDA required sticker label on the back lists the ingredient as 100% Rapeseed oil.

Awesome, yeah last I checked there was a producer in the U.K. too. I'm not 100% on those because they do seem to have a slightly lighter color, and I'm not sure why. The one thing I've seen though is that they're like... stupid expensive. The Caiziyou's cool but I also don't think it's worth breaking the bank over :)

errm: COLD-pressed, not old-pressed....;)

I just briefly checked it, and apparently there is no problem getting virgin, old-pressed rapeseed oil in Germany...and they say distinctly "rapeseed oil", not just rape oil. However, they discribe the taste as "earthy I just briefly checked it, and apparently there is no problem getting virgin, old-pressed rapeseed oil in Germany...and they say distinctly "rapeseed oil", not just rape oil. However, they discribe the taste as "earthy and spicey" and Im not sure that fits your description.
