There are two concepts: the choice of whether to engage in a polyamorous relationship and an internal tendency toward polyamory. The latter may include either or both the security to feel comfortable with your partner having multiple partners (and the love to support- and sometimes sacrifice for- the other relationship(s)) and the desire to be in a relationship with more than one person. In any case, there's a lot of nuance to which configurations people are inclined to and how the dynamics of relationships affect whether a situation is comfortable/possible or not, so a lot of communication about both these dimensions of polyamory is critical for a happy and ethical poly relationship. Perhaps it could be helpful to distinguish these as "polyamorous person" and "polyamorous relationship." The decision of whether to have a polyamorous relationship can be independent of a person's level of innate desire/need for polyamory.
