Given that the previous episodes in the "Road to the 1911" series featured commentary about how each pistol improved upon the previous Colt automatic, I was hoping the Maeversation would include a bit about how the 1911 compared to the 1907 or 1907/09 in terms of recoil, bore axis, etc. A little nitpick, nonetheless I really enjoyed the conversation about the 1911 and its foreign contemporaries.

Too many people ignore the ins and outs of firearms design, bureaucracy, the political intrigue and personalities that have led to the tools that men have used to fight wars, protect the public and for self defense over the years. Y'all are a blessing to our community of enthusiasts and a lasting resource of great, accurate research being presented in a pleasant, entertaining and informational format. The conversation with Mae misses (so far at 1:28) the following bit - people (eg. Clint Smith) demonstrate an emergency technique for one handed loading and one handed slide stroking of the 1911. You could drop a mag, grab another one awkwardly with your gun hand, grab it in your teeth, manage to insert the mag. (does this work with a Lugger?) AND - press top of slide against your belt/pocket/boot etc, and push with firing hand. (Taking care to not shoot self) This (2nd bit) seems impossible for the Lugger. Of course unclear if anybody had thought of this in 1912 or so. [You could also reach with your thumb to the mag release I guess - does that work on the Lugger?]

aaah. the mother of all autoloaders. finally. what a story! and that isn't even a switch to the a1's! in the 1st? 1911 luger 9mmlong 1903/07 then steyr 1912 to me. NO doubt the 11 wins the autos. hell I don't own any autos since... but the 1911 is next handgun I want to get. WHAT other design is that much influential and still that popular 110+ years later? ok the saa but...

I also wanted to say that you really hit the nail on the head during the Maeversation regarding Browning designs. I would rarely, if ever, say that anything of his was ahead of its time, that's just not true. Rather, he was just so far ahead of the competition that it set new standards. I think his genius comes through in consistently delivering the best version of what he was asked for or saw as marketable.

Yay! Very well done. Boy, are you going to disappoint 1911 cultists.... One pedantic note, 5:28 while "spiral" is accurate "coil" would be more appropriate . Also at 1:02:13 you missed a perfect opportunity for a "war were declared" throwback. I particularly like that you've given due credit to non-Browning-derived features.
