I think the idiom Othias was looking for was "Talked to him like a Dutch Uncle" where an older person would try to advise a younger person by being blunt about the downsides of the situation.

Fleshing that out - a Dutch uncle (best kind of uncle) tells things to you straight, maybe even too straight, with no regard for how you feel about it. Your Dutch uncle is thrifty/cheap, but gives you the best advice and will get you through bad shit grumbling all the way.
