Donations Donations. When it comes to donations, people think any kinds of shit about them. Let’s start from the reason I decided to use them. Once, Akabur talked me into it, and I’m grateful for this. I tried it and I liked it. Before creating my Patreon page I was on a brink of a professional crisis. I practically physically struggled while doing my job. Understanding that I’m wasting my energy, experience and time I still have to carry out somebody’s wishes just to get money to feed myself and my closest ones used to put me out like water puts out fire. It was no longer important to me whether I work on some stupid suit who “knows how to draw better than I do” or on some cute and polite private customer (may Ateas bless him) prepared to accept anything I draw if I do that drawing personally for him. I was drawing things that I never wanted to be drawn at all. And on my 28th year of such practice it was driving me nuts! But finally, here it is, an almost unbelievable opportunity! To draw just for myself! Well, for myself and everyone else who thinks that I’m drawing something interesting for them. No dictatorship over me. Nobody tells me what, how much and what about to draw. And no dictatorship over patreons. If they like my art, they pay. If not, they don’t! Fuck, the only moron in this plan was Patreon itself adding its stupid restrictions on so-called ‘lewd stuff’ to please payment systems which not only made money on these obscenities but also had the nerve to object! I was honest with my donators, and they were honest with me. The idyll! What could’ve possibly sent the wrong message??? First, I was fucking shocked when I heard complains about donations addressed to my reviewer friends. I could hardly believe my ears hearing how both the ones collecting donations and the ones not collecting them were blamed and told that it’s a big no-no! Donation censors pulled some ‘Rules of the Honest Earnings’ out of their ass. And donations, this form of voluntary work evaluation happened to not fit into those shitty amendments. The ’red puritans’ were, as always, in the front line. “A true proletarian must only work for a capitalist, that’s the proper way! And if you want to make reviews, shoot videos or write articles, you must do it in your leisure time and then distribute it among your class brethren free of charge! And to ask for voluntary donations from your brethren is a form capitalism, racket, begging, blackmail, fraud, heresy and sin!” Did the ‘red accusers’ ever stop after knowing that the final version was given to all the ‘class brethren' (and not only brethren), whether they donated or not? No. They never stopped even after knowing that, for instance, Joe and Mira [Russian reviewers] earn money with their hard work and make their videos for free in their free time ‘like a proper left should’. DONATION IS A SIN! Because reasons. Perhaps, the most honest and voluntary way of making money is being portrayed as ‘a sin’. And the most idiotic part, it is set against ‘truly honorable’ work for freaking hire. I was fucking astonished when I saw one of such ‘proper guys’ writing how disgraceful it is to make some of your creations patreon-only. “Because there are so many of you, draftsmen of art we like, and we patreons don’t have money for everyone. We have to pay for food and rent, you know. And you, digital doodlers, don’t even need to buy canvas and paints!” And then he made The Conclusion. “All art must be distributed for free, and you must make money only by searching for proper customers.” The whole situation was made even more peculiar by the fact that the author of this bright idea was an artist himself. And he even created a Patreon page for himself (of course, for distributing his art ‘properly’, unlike his arrogant colleagues with their paywalls and whatnot!) So, I played a fool and tried to tell this person that people are free to not pay for art at all, especially in the case they don’t have money to even feed themselves. And that an artist is not supposed to comply with someone’s weird ‘moral standards’ while choosing the way to make some money, especially in our complicated economic circumstances. And that he’s free to do with his art anything he likes, make it paid, free or even burn it right after drawing without showing anyone while laughing maniacally. And of course, I tried to explain that an artist is free to set any donations he likes. And there’s nothing wrong about it, because no one forces you to comply with his conditions. Now guess, did I receive even a tiny bit of understanding in return?) Donations are relatively new way of making money. But in the first place, it appeared because other ways became burdened with too many unbeneficial royalties. And yes, some people collecting donations become arrogant and start making demands to the ones paying them. But those who pay and receive content using the ‘old’ ways could be no less arrogant. And also, it all is just the result of that same misunderstanding of the nature of donations, but this time from the people who receive them. Donations almost became a swear word. But in fact, they’re one of the most progressive and socialized ways of payment. And while this way doesn’t completely remove a middleman between content creator and his customer (see Patreon’s idiocy), it extremely minimizes the number of such middlemen. All the talks about donations being ‘racket and begging’ are total bullshit. On one hand, creator still sells his product. On the other, you could not buy it if you don’t want too, and nobody’ll do you no harm. Not the most fresh concept, right? Now, what are donations for me personally? That’s about a thousand bucks which I put to use when I literally spat up blood and was unable to work (and I’m extremely grateful to every one of my patreons for this!) Thanks to this, I continue making my game project, because I’m conscious of my responsibility to those donating me and fully aware that they MUST get what I promised. Donations helped me to assist some projects I was personally interested in (for instance, comic anthology of Askold Akinshin) without asking fat guys from publishing houses whether they want to print them or not. That’s what helps me to support interesting authors and motivate them to continue indulge me with their content. And now you could understand how tiny and insignificant are morons who tell us ‘what a disgrace are your donations’ when compared to all mentioned above. Donation is an instrument in consumer’s hands. This instrument is modern and effective. Yes, it still requires some adjustments. But any old timer telling you this instrument is an unworthy way of earning money or bringing your creative plans to life is worthy of a single thing. To go fuck himself! Never before the boundary between content creators and consumers was so thin. And fuck everyone standing in the way of this progress. On the way of honest earnings in the name of fulfilling dreams of that same ‘consumer’ and realizing artist’s potential. Ave donations!
