Lena felt like a horse chasing a carrot on the end of a stick as she hit the button to start up the treadmill and began a slow jog.
Across the gym from her in a white Nike sports bra and loose-fitting shorts, Kara Danvers was at the pull-up bar. Every time she brought her chin over the bar, her biceps flexed and Lena could see the full curvature of her muscle. Bathed in sweat but still eager, Kara performed another set and then took a short break. She flopped down on an exercise mat to work her abdominal muscles, lifting her legs and back in quick rotations.
Lena’s mouth hung open in admiration and a scarlet blush spread up her neck as Kara stole a glance her way.
In recent weeks, Lena had been spending more and more time at the gym, and not because of her dedication to a work-out routine. She came to the gym just for Kara.
The fit blonde showed up every other day and did all kinds of incredible things with her body — stretching and bending and so much lifting that Lena could vividly imagine Kara picking her up and holding her in several different positions while they had sex.
Beyond her obvious strength, Kara also smelled wonderful – like spice and cedar layered over alpha pheromones so tempting that it was no wonder the gym had a policy about using strong scent-maskers.
Lena almost injured herself on the equipment three times, and had actually crushed her finger in a weight machine once when Kara had approached to offer her help.
That was how Lena found out that Kara didn’t even know her name— after the shocked question of, “oh my god are you okay?”— and Lena completely ignoring her throbbing finger long enough to utter out a peculiar, “Wonderful, I mean—yeah, I’m fine” — there had been a hurried exchange of names.
Her bruised finger was finally healing up from that incident, and thank god for that, because Lena needed those fingers for other activities after the gym.
She was attracted to Kara, but unfortunately for her, the alpha seemed almost completely unaware of her existence.
Lena had been attending the same college as Kara for going on three years now. They had taken several classes together, lived on the same floor in the same dorm during their freshman year, and even mingled with some of the same people, but Kara seemed to have a singular fixation on training for high risk sports.
Growing up, Lena’s mother had limited her to “respectable” sports only: tennis, fencing and equestrian competitions. Lena earned plenty of pretty ribbons to hang on her walls, but she was nothing like Kara when it came to athleticism.
In spite of that, when Student Activities sent out an email advertising a winter trip to the slopes, and her friend Jess badgered her to sign up, Lena found herself paying the fees with the hope that Kara would also be going.
If nothing else, Lena figured she could sit in the lodge and appreciate the snow from indoors, the way she usually preferred to interact with it. She bought a pair of skis and a new, impractical ski jacket just for the occasion, although she would much rather spend the trip cracking the spine on a few books than risk cracking her own on the mountainside.
On the night before the trip, Lena fell asleep and dreamed of making a fool of herself by face-planting in the snow—and although she had never believed in superstitions or premonitions, that terrible dream set the tone for everything that came next.
When she woke up the next morning, she rushed around so much that she forgot to pack certain necessities that an omega like her practically required to get through the day. The worst of it was that she left behind the perfume she used to cover up some of her scent. Wearing scent-reducing sprays had become as mandatory as wearing clothes in college.
She had to borrow a spray for betas from her twin friends, Eve and Hope, and Eve spent the entire morning laughing at her.
The beta perfume did little to conceal her omega scents, and it was almost like walking around in a string bikini when she passed through the crowd to get onto the bus. It was obscene and she blushed in embarrassment, too mortified to speak as she hurried to find her seat.
“If you want an alpha to notice you, now is definitely the time,” Eve snickered in her ear, and took great delight in pointing out every alpha that stared at Lena’s ass.
Fortunately another omega was on the trip and she doused herself in perfume when
Jess rushed off to borrow some on her behalf.
With that crisis averted, Lena was unprepared for the next one.
Kara Danvers was one of the last to get on the bus, along with Barry Allen and Oliver McQueen and her sister, Alex Danvers.
Oliver stopped right beside Lena and squinted at the number on his ticket, then at the one above her row. “You’re in our seats.” He stated gruffly, and half of the bus turned to watch the spectacle unfold.
“We can just take theirs. It’s no big deal.” Barry suggested with a friendly smile, but Oliver refused to budge, and Lena realized it was because the scent of her was still lingering in the bus, although it had dispersed around her instead of clinging to her.
“I want my seat.” Oliver reiterated, not bothering to look at Barry as he stared over Hope’s shoulder to eyeball Lena.
She was in no mood to deal with a demanding alpha, and still far too embarrassed about her own scents to argue with him.
“No, yeah - that’s – that’s totally fine. Sorry — take it,” Lena tripped over her words, and then her own feet. Fortunately Hope caught her by the back of her jacket before she stumbled into the opposite seats, where Jess and Eve were trying not to laugh.
“I didn’t realize the seats were numbered.” Lena explained under her breath, but Oliver just grunted and slid into the seat he was assigned, followed by Barry, who gave her a small, sympathetic smile.
Sandwiched in the aisle with Hope in front of her and Alex behind her, Lena fumbled to find her ticket, aware that everyone was staring. She panicked because she heard Kara sniff the air sharply behind her sister.
“Hope, can you—”
“Check my ticket? On it.” Her friend nodded sharply and began to dig through her own bag, much to Eve’s amusement.
“I don’t care where I sit,” Kara suddenly stated, popping her head around Alex to smile at Lena as she suggested, “Find whichever seats are open and just grab them.”
Alex rolled her eyes and Lena nodded dumbly as a blush spread from her cheeks and covered her pale upper chest.
Lena didn’t trust herself to speak, but her eyes lingered on Kara so long that Hope took it upon herself to drag her into one of the seats at the back of the bus.
Alex and Kara filed in to sit behind them and Lena felt her spine go rigid when she noticed that Kara was only inches away from her. The faint spice and cedar notes of the alpha reached her after a minute and Lena slid lower in her seat as heat pooled inside her abdomen and made her cheeks glow hotly.
“Are you okay?” Hope asked in a whisper. “You look like you’re upset.”
“I’m fine.” Lena snapped back in a hushed voice, but she was staring at the door of the bus like she might just run for it to escape this stupid trip. What the hell had she been thinking?
The sound of Kara’s laugh twisted Lena’s gut pleasantly and she sighed in resignation as she remembered.
Miss Grant stood up to inform them all that they wouldn’t be stopping, and that any snacks consumed on the bus better not be left on the floor, or everyone could walk back at the end of the trip. Apparently college students were worse than toddlers when it came to mess and she wouldn’t stand for it.
Five minutes later, the bus was roaring down the street and there was a distinct loud crackle of a wrapper being torn open behind Lena, and a fierce whisper from Alex. “You cannot be hungry. I saw what you ate for breakfast.”
“Pfft, snacks don’t count as food.” Kara exclaimed, and the sound of her laughing again had Lena smiling and pining.
Lena stifled a laugh of her own when Alex commented about how her sister should be monitored by scientists because she was pretty sure Kara’s stomach was a blackhole.
A hand popped through the seats and frightened the life out of Lena, but it shook the bag of M&M’s enticingly, and when she turned to look at it, she could see part of Kara’s face peeking at her from the gap between the seats. “Do you want some?”
Kara’s jovial smile was distracting, of what she could see anyway, and Lena heard herself breathlessly answer, “Thank you. I would love - I would love some.”
Hope gave her a peculiar look and pointedly cleared her throat when Lena didn’t make a move to take any.
“Oh right,” Lena laughed and dumped out a few of the colorful candies to cradle in her hand. “Thanks.” She reiterated as Kara took the bag back.
Lena stared at the mix of blue, red and yellows, as if Kara had just given her precious gems instead of candy, and then crunched them into a delicious chocolate paste.
Maybe this trip would be worth it after all.
The easy back and forth banter between Kara and her sister kept Lena entertained during the ride, almost more than her books and music and Hope did.
Hope continued to cast knowing little glances in Lena’s direction while she flipped through her Cosmo magazine.
“Okay, do this quiz with me,” Hope demanded and held up the page for Lena to see the questions. “It’s about your sexy style. The first question is about lingerie: do you go all out or do you stick with basics, like a matching bra and panties?”
Lena elbowed Hope in the ribs and flashed her a wide-eyed look of panic.
“Are you crazy? We can’t talk about this right now,” Lena hissed furiously. “Someone is going to hear you.”
By someone, she meant Kara, who she could practically feel perking up in her seat. Hope lifted an eyebrow coyly, like this was all part of her devious plan to be overheard.
Lena expected this kind of behavior from Eve, but not from Hope, who was a much better version of her twin sister.
“Fine, I normally go all out,” Lena whispered and leaned into Hope, fusing herself to her friend’s side so they could discreetly take the quiz.
“The next question is about roughhousing in bed: yes or no?” Hope asked, bumping her in the shoulder to silently convey that she spotted Kara’s eyes on them.
Lena mouthed I hate you and sighed “yes” so quietly that she was sure Kara would have no idea which option she had chosen.
“Your go-to sex position is… doggystyle or spooning?” Hope blinked down at page, and then back at Lena, who furrowed her brow and scrutinized the magazine.
“These questions seem pretty limiting,” Lena pointed out and grabbed the copy of Cosmo from Hope.
“They’re basically the same position.” Hope noted, then added with a sly smirk, “I guess the real question is do you like it rough or sensual?”
Lena shoved the magazine back into her friend’s hands before she had the urge to hit her with it. “Most people enjoy a variety depending on their mood.” She announced sharply.
Hope wouldn’t be deterred and persisted in a whisper, “So is that a yes or no for doggystyle?”
Lena opened her mouth to answer then snapped it shut as Alex barked, “What the hell are you doing?”
“I uh – I was —” Kara stumbled over her words and Lena quirked an eyebrow at Hope questioningly.
“Practically hugging the—”
“Looking for my earphones.” Kara cut Alex off at the last second with her sheepish answer.
“You’re holding them,” Alex stated dryly and then moved right on to reprimanding Kara. “Sit properly before you end up on your ass between the seats.”
Lena pressed her lips together to avoid laughing because she knew Kara had been leaning into the back of the seats, trying to hear her answers. A tingle of excitement rolled down Lena’s spine, but she couldn’t bring herself to participate in the quiz after that. She glanced at Hope, who flashed her a victorious grin and rolled her eyes in return.
Lena tried not to sink down in her seat as she imagined Kara guessing at what her answer might have been. Unfortunately Lena wondered about Kara’s preferences, only to get terribly flustered when she pictured the alpha behind her in both positions.
“Do you need something to drink?” Hope asked out of nowhere, snapping Lena out of her fantasy and back to the crowded bus. “You look thirsty.” She teased in a light voice, and Lena groaned and slapped her arm.
The rest of the ride was uneventful, and once they reached the lodge, they were welcomed with a frozen landscape and a bitter cold breeze that had Lena instantly regretting her decision to go on the trip.
Once everyone was off the bus with their bags and equipment in hand, Jess and Eve came over to regroup with them. Lena was convinced she already had frostbite, because ice crystals formed on her eyelashes and her teeth chattered, even with her jacket pulled tight around her.
“You’re going to freeze your nipples off in that thing.” Eve commented and gestured to Lena’s ski coat, which was more form-fitting than protective. “Why the hell didn’t you buy a bigger one?”
“Leave her alone. She looks great in it.” Hope immediately defended Lena, and took her arm to help her move through the snow.
“Yeah, because hypothermia is so fashionable.” Eve laughed rudely and shook her head as they trudged forward up the paths.
Lena pinched her lips into a menacing line and set her glare on Eve. She tried to seem angry, but she had to admit to herself that she made a terrible mistake when she began trembling.
At least the problem was easily remedied when she entered the lodge. She went up to the room she would be sharing with her friends to put on her thermal under-layers.
When she stepped outside the next time with her skis in hand, she no longer shook from head to toe.
It was unsurprising to see Kara already in her full gear and standing with a snowboard at her side. Kara had been involved in competitive snowboarding for years, and when she flew down the mountainside, plenty of spectators gathered to watch.
Lena stood in the crowd of fans and quietly seethed at the other betas and omegas who were forward enough to wave or try to get Kara’s attention.
Eve came to find Lena when she was so deep in distraction that she jolted in place. “Jesus, Eve, did you have to sneak up on me?” Lena hissed.
“Sorry to interrupt your fantasies,” Eve snickered and peered up the mountain range with a glimmer of wickedness in her eye. “Why don’t you try snowboarding and ask Kara for some pointers? I bet she’d give you a lot of one-on-one attention if you returned the favor later.”
“You’re the evil twin, you know that, right?” Lena spat and shoved Eve a little harder than was necessary. Not that Eve seemed to mind, as she cackled loudly and grinned.
“So what’s your plan?” Eve asked, suddenly serious as she squinted thoughtfully at Lena. “Is it to stand here until your tits form icicles and hope that Kara sees you? Because if it is, I think the line for that starts way over there.” Eve pointed to the other spot, where all of the other betas and omegas were yelling and waving to get attention.
“If I go up there, I might die.” Lena pointed out dryly.
Lena’s skis were on her feet, but she hadn’t even attempted to slide down the slope yet. It was hard enough trying to move in the damn things without going at break neck speed, and she was pretty sure she shouldn’t even be in this area. The beginners and children were all at the other slope.
“If all you’re going to do is stare at Kara from afar, then you might as well be dead. What was the point in coming if you aren’t even going to try?” Eve asked in a clipped tone as she eyed Lena curiously, judging her for daring to be cautious.
Lena scowled back at her and after a long, drawn out moment, declared haughtily, “You’re a terrible friend. If I end up snapping my neck, I want you to know I blame you for it.”
“Honestly Lena, I can live with that.” Eve deadpanned, but there was a mischievous glint in her eyes as she steered them towards the ski lifts. “Let’s go, before you miss your chance.”
“You’re coming with me?” Lena asked, startled that Eve was being so supportive. Usually it was Hope who stood by her side and she felt herself smiling in surprise.
“Someone’s going to have to push you and it might as well be me.” Eve muttered, and climbed into the seat next to Lena to stop her from leaving if she changed her mind.
“You’re the worst person I know.” Lena grumbled, but there was a fondness to her smile as Eve leaned affectionately into her and grinned as if she was proud of that fact.
The slope was steeper than Lena had expected, and the higher the lift climbed, the more her heart began to seize in panic. People were zig-zagging at speeds she couldn’t even fathom and snow was billowing up like white clouds around them, making it harder to see.
“Why on earth would anyone think strapping their feet to sheets of plastic to hurl themselves down an icy hill be a good idea?” Lena shrilly asked.
“Why don’t you ask her?” Eve nonchalantly commented, and not-so-subtly pointed to where Alex, Kara, and Barry were all sitting together.
Lena hadn’t even noticed they were in the seats in front of them. It was a small mercy that they were out of earshot, but she still jabbed Eve in the ribs with her elbow for good measure, because she was starting to suspect the reason she hurried them to get on was because she had spotted Kara.
There was a terrifying moment when Lena didn’t think she would be able to jump off the seat, and Eve saw that as her signal to push her out of the thing before she clambered off it herself.
“I’ve changed my mind. I can’t do this.” Lena hissed under her breath. She could barely feel her own face from the cold air and she was starting to think her lungs were turning to ice because she was struggling to catch her breath.
Eve rolled her eyes and stuck her poles into the snow to root her to the spot. “Stop having a panic attack. You can do this, because you need to do it.”
Lena frowned at the sage advice, her mind drawing up a few different reasons as to why she had to do it. “Right, it’s better to face my fears, which aren’t necessarily just related to my attraction to Kara. I also have fears about trying new things, and my inevitable mortality—”
“Oh,” Eve laughed. “I just meant the only way off this slope is to go down it, but sure go with all that philosophical crap if it helps.”
Before Lena could grab her to choke the life out of her, Eve pushed off and began her descent with a cackle of, “See you at the bottom!”
“Bitch!” Lena yelled before she remembered where she was and that she wasn’t alone up there. A few people glanced curiously at her while several laughed as they passed her.
This was glaringly the worst mistake of her life and she stood there for a humiliatingly long time until Barry and Alex shot off on their boards.
Satisfied that Kara must have already gone, Lena pushed off with her heart in her throat, and went five full inches before she panicked and stuck her poles into the snow to tether herself.
“Breathe,” Lena whispered to herself, because the only pep talk she was going to get was from herself. If she could just focus, she would be fine. “You’ve taken on bigger things than this. It’s just like a slide, except you’re standing, and you don’t know how to stop, and if you stay up here too long you might actually form into a human popsicle.”
This wasn’t helping. Neither was the kid half her size who was gliding by her and laughing.
“Just do it.” Lena muttered, then winced because she had become a walking Nike slogan.
She pictured Eve’s mocking face and then Kara’s bright grin, how agile and free she seemed when she was snowboarding. Lena finally went for it, and the only screaming she did was internal. The first few seconds had her stomach flipping but when she didn’t lose her balance, it changed to a pleasant thrill she hadn’t been expecting. Then, as if she had sped straight into a nightmare, Lena heard a cheerful cry of, “You’re doing so good!”
Lena knew that voice, had memorized it, and her body reacted to it instantly. She whipped her head to the side and gaped when she saw Kara next to her, serpentining to stay at the same pace as her.
“I’ll go down with you!” Kara called out, and raised her gloved hands to give Lena a double thumbs up.
Kara’s grin was so enthralling that Lena felt heat pool between her thighs. Forgetting what the hell she was doing, Lena pressed her legs together and suddenly the world was spinning as Kara yelled her name.
Pain flourished behind her eyes, as bright and jarring as the snow and Lena groaned as she finally came to a stop with thanks to her face. She wasn’t sure which part of her hurt the most or where her limbs were, but she was pretty sure she was still alive and that both of her skis were still on.
Kara was there in an instant, skidding to a halt to land on her knees and frantically dusting the snow off of Lena. “Are you okay?” She asked, trying to help her up. “Are you injured?”
Lena winced as she touched herself all over, making sure that every part of her was intact, even as she realized that the sharpest pain radiated from her ankle.
At least when the accident occurred, Lena had been at the bottom of the slope, and Jess shouted to say she was going to get medical help.
“I twisted my foot,” Lena hissed from between clenched teeth, grateful that Kara took the initiative to begin removing her ski boots. “I don’t think it’s broken.”
“I would normally let the first aid staff check you out, but I’ve dealt with plenty of skiing injuries before,” Kara explained and gingerly placed the skis aside, so the blades no longer interfered with Lena’s ability to move. She discovered she could move her toes and bend the arch of her foot, but she must have sprained it because when she tried a simple rotation, she wanted to scream.
To her complete surprise, once Kara discarded the skis and checked her over, she lifted Lena from the ground. Lena’s blush of humiliation deepened into one of arousal as she stared at Kara.
“You’re going to carry me?” Lena asked in a breathless and appreciative voice, so content to have the alpha’s arms wrapped around her that she considered throwing herself into the snow every day of the trip if it meant experiencing this level of closeness to Kara.
“Yeah, no reason to wait for a medic when I can just take you there.” Kara answered easily, and then turned to call out to her sister. “Alex, can you get my board?”
“Yeah, we’re on it.” Alex shouted back and waved Kara off as Barry and Hope came to help collect Lena’s skis and boots.
The soft crunch of snow under Kara’s feet was soothing to hear and her smile was wonderfully distracting, which was exactly what Lena needed as they moved through the crowd at the bottom of the slope.
By the time Kara had made it back to the lodge, Jess was hurrying over with a medic. Kara set Lena on the comfy seats by a fire with a soft promise of, “I’ll get you something warm to drink while he tends to your ankle.”
Lena was too dazed to respond, and the medic was starting to think she had a concussion until Kara walked off and suddenly she could speak again.
“She seems slow, but it’s only because she has a crush.” Eve helpfully explained when she strolled over with Hope by her side.
Hope slapped her on the arm and Jess gave Eve a reproachful nudge. “Don’t be so obnoxious. She could have really hurt herself.”
The medic ignored them, wrapped Lena’s ankle in a bandage and recommended that she stay off it for the rest of the trip.
“Let me guess, he told you to rest it, ice it, and gently rotate it.” Kara said as she came back, a large mug of hot cocoa in her hand, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
“Here, this always makes me feel better.” Kara offered the mug to Lena, oblivious to the way her friends stared at her.
“That’s really kind of you,” Lena gushed and sipped the drink, only to end up with cream all over her lips that she had to lick away. It must have looked pornographic to everyone, because Eve started smacking Hope in the arm and Jess paled at the alpha scents that filtered into the air around Kara.
Eve pushed her way towards them and stared up at Kara with a cunning smile on her face.
“I hope you’re not planning to head back to the slopes just yet,” Eve simpered. “Lena is going to need help getting back to our room and it seems like you have no trouble carrying her.” She glanced Lena’s way, making it clear that she considered all of this a favor that Lena would have to repay later.
Leave it to Eve to almost break Lena’s foot and view it as a service.
“Oh, yeah, I can take her.” Kara puffed up slightly as if she needed to show that she was capable, and nodded eagerly, but she was looking over Eve’s head to meet Lena’s eyes as she grinned. “I mean, if that’s alright with you.”
“Are you kidding? That’s great. We’d just end up injuring her more.” Eve supplied coyly and motioned for Hope and Jess to walk away. “We’ll find your friends and let them know you’re taking care of ours.”
Eve’s sly remark caused Lena to choke and cough into her hot cocoa and it sent flecks of whipped cream over her face and, humiliatingly, over Kara’s snow pants. She could hear Eve laughing as she shoved Jess through the door.
Before Lena could wallow in how mortifying the whole situation was, Kara was crouching beside her and offering a napkin.
“You’re not having a great day, huh?” Kara asked, her blue eyes kind and her smile warm as she stood up to wipe off her pants. “Maybe I can help turn it around.”
Lena was either fantasizing or she had seen the outline of something that she probably shouldn’t have as Kara adjusted her pants. It sent heat straight to her core and she reddened, inhaling the spicy scent of Kara’s pheromones.
As hastily as she could, Lena cleaned her face, set her cocoa aside and said the last thing she wanted to say out of obligation. “You should go have fun. I don’t want to ruin your trip by keeping you from the slopes.”
Kara laughed and shrugged as if it was no big deal. “Pretty sure it was me who ruined your trip.”
The questioning look Lena must have had on her face prompted Kara to explain, “I threw you off by talking to you, so the least I can do is keep you company now.”
Without waiting for an answer, Kara crouched back down to scoop Lena up and held her gently in her strong arms. “Lead the way to your room and I’ll see if I can get us Netflix or something?”
The scent of Kara’s pheromones was deliciously intoxicating and Lena held onto her tighter as her face burned. She had been wrong. Skiing wouldn’t be the death of her. It would be the proximity of Kara, and the way her body cried out to be touched by the alpha.
“Room 525.” Lena muttered, because she didn’t trust herself to say anything else while her panties were dampening with slick.
Kara must have detected the sweet perfume of her arousal because she swallowed thickly and inhaled deeply, unashamed to be seen admiring the smell of Lena. She nodded stiffly and moved them to the elevators with the kind of confidence that made people step out of the way.
The smothering scent of them had stopped other people from getting in, and by the time they reached Lena’s room, she was feeling light headed. Kara took the key card from her hand and pushed the door open, then walked Lena to the bed and set her down comfortably.
“How are you feeling? Do you want any snacks, or a drink?” Kara rambled, her eyes intent on Lena. “Is there anything I can get you?”
Lena relaxed with her arms back against the pillows and shook her head, but then changed her mind at the last second and gestured to her bag. “Can you grab that for me?”
Kara dutifully lifted the backpack and handed it to Lena, who rummaged around for chapstick.
“My lips get so dry in the winter time,” Lena muttered to herself as she puckered her lips and smushed them together to rub the gloss over them. She dropped the chapstick back into her bag as Kara pulled up an armchair close to the bed.
“You can sit with me, you know,” Lena offered and moved some of the pillows out of the way to make plenty of room for Kara. She propped her foot up on one of the small cushions and then began to unzip her ski jacket.
“My thermal layers are starting to get to me with the heating up so high,” Lena softly huffed, although she assumed that the heating was only half of the problem when Kara’s pheromones were so strong. She was hot for other reasons.
Asking Kara to see her up to the room came with its downsides, because there was no way she could remove her thermals without someone’s help and it would be inappropriate for the alpha to do it.
