Kelly seemed enchanted by Rara’s effortless and earnest compliment about her earrings, much to the chagrin of Alex, who accidentally flambéed the sprouts in her distraction. “Are we sure she’s safe to be around?”

“A third wheel?” Alex intoned meaningfully, raising both of her eyebrows at Kara as she continued to be oblivious to the way Lena eavesdropped on the conversation.
Kara choked on her own saliva and shook her head, laughing nervously enough to make everyone within a five-mile radius very curious.
Brainy never bothered to lower his voice, despite the way he shifted to move closer to Alex to state, “On a serious note, I’m inclined to believe that Kara could be mentally impaired. We didn’t run many tests on her brain after we concluded her vitals were perfect. Perhaps that was an oversight.”
“I’m not mentally impaired!” Kara insisted, offended by the suggestion and the fact that Brainy still looked to Alex for her input. It didn’t help that Alex wobbled her hand as if Brainy had a point. “Will you stop that? I’m just in the holiday spirit. That’s all. You two could try getting into it, instead of sitting there like judgmental grinches.”
“Where is the Grinch?” Rara asked, on high alert as she zoomed straight back to the kitchen and defensively stood in front of Lena as if she meant to protect her. “I will not let it steal Christmas.” She asserted, her hands outstretched as she backed up slightly and then looked over her shoulder towards Lena. “I will keep you safe.”
Lena softened at Rara’s selfless instinct and reached out to gently squeeze her arm in appreciation, unaware of how her eyes shined with adoration.
Alex noticed, however, and quirked an eyebrow as she swung her attention to Kara, who was jutting her chin out like a petulant child. “There is no Grinch. It’s just an expression.” Kara grumbled under her breath.
“My bad, that’s on me,” Kelly quickly explained, venturing back into the kitchen with an empty wine glass and a grin. “I was just telling Rara about some of the popular Christmas movies.”

Lena cleared her throat sharply, and as everyone turned to glance at Nia, the young reporter laughed anxiously and supplied with a squeak, “Origami.”
“Origami?” Alex reiterated with a deadpan face and tone of suspicion.

Rara opened the balcony door, and with a nod, they took to the skies, leaving a bewildered Alex behind to watch them vanish into the night.
