“Gone?” Lena asked before she could stop herself and strode out onto the balcony with them. “What’s going on?”

Lena squinted at her best friend suspiciously and enunciated through a smile, “It’s Friday, and I thought we could use some good food to celebrate a week of productivity.”
It wasn’t new for Kara to appear flustered, but there was something strange to the way she couldn’t look at her, and Lena gravitated closer, her hand naturally finding Kara’s shoulder as she asked, “Is there an emergency? How can I help?”

“I said I’ve got it covered.” Kara quickly cut Nia off, her tone sharp enough to surprise everyone. She shuffled slightly, no doubt uncomfortable with the tension she had just caused, and swallowed thickly when she noticed Lena scrutinizing her.
“You just said it was dire.” Lena persisted, because this wasn’t like Kara. She didn’t shut people out in times of need, she unified them. The only plausible explanation was that something terrible must be happening if Kara couldn’t confide in her. “Surely there’s something I can do to assist you?”
Kara backed away from her friends with her hands raised and chin lowered. She glanced at Lena and then out at the skyline as she professed, “Honestly guys, I’ve got this, and I’ll be back before you even know I’m gone, okay? I need you all here, and I’ll text as soon as I get back.”
“At least tell me what’s going on. Please, Kara, we’ve always made a good team.” Lena implored with a smile, and reached out again, her hands ghosting over Kara’s arms, who seemed to tremble under the touch. “Whatever it is, I can help. Just let me.”
Kara pressed her lips together and ducked out of their curious gazes by darting back into the office with a muttered, “I - I have to go…”
“Is it just me, or is she acting weird?” Nia asked, her face scrunching as she gazed between James and Lena for confirmation.
“Yeah, she is,” James agreed, resting his arms on the edge of the balcony railing. “But she’ll be okay. She wouldn’t rush into danger without a plan.”
Lena rolled her eyes at his remark. Sometimes it felt like nobody understood just how reckless Kara could be when it came to saving others over herself. She stalked off the balcony and over to where Kara was hurriedly grabbing her work from her desk, then lowered her voice to what she hoped was a soothing tone. “You know you can tell me anything, right? If this is dangerous, please, tell me so I can help you.”
“Lena, I —I can’t. This is something I have to do alone.” Kara’s voice went up in pitch and she was still avoiding Lena’s gaze as she unceremoniously gathered all of the papers on her desk and scooped them into her arms to flee into the elevator. “I promise I’ll be back before you know it, and we can grab lunch tomorrow at Noonan’s.”
A piece of paper fluttered to the ground in Kara’s haste to retreat and Lena picked it up and hurried after her.
“Kara, wait, you dropped your—”
The metal doors shut and Lena was left with a slip of paper that had Lena Luthor, 621 Apple Park Lane. Earth 33 scrawled on it.
Lena spent the next hour mulling it over in her mind with varying degrees of worry and self-loathing.
Obviously this other version of herself must be evil. Kara didn’t want her to know it, or suffer because of any similarities she might note between them. Now Kara was heading into a horrible situation without any back-up and Lena would be damned if she allowed that to happen. Whatever this Lena from Earth 33 was up to, Lena could handle it, and more importantly she would help Kara put a stop to it.
With her mind made up, and a few small, but lethal gadgets tucked into her pockets, Lena scoured for any portal activity and nursed a glass of wine as the minutes ticked on to hours.
Just when she was starting to give up hope, a signal went up for a portal close to the location of the DEO and Lena jumped at the chance to gather the coordinates of the activity.
This was it. This was Kara off to save another world from the dark clutches of Lena’s doppelgänger, and Lena was going to be right by her side to fight.
At least that was the plan.
By the time Lena had punched the coordinates into her own portal device, and got it up and running, she was a good ten minutes behind Kara—but with a slight adjustment, she would be stepping right into her path.
A rush of heroism flooded Lena as she worked herself up to face off against another evil Luthor.

“You say that as if I’m wicked, but I can see you’re intrigued. Do you want to hear more?”
Lena’s jaw dropped and she pressed herself into the doors, her hands tight around the handles so that they didn’t open further. She couldn’t believe the audacity of the bitch, discussing her dastardly plans like some kind of Bond villain.
“I’m not sure I can handle hearing the rest.”

Maybe last night took more out of you than you thought. “I hope you don’t mind that I had this dinner catered,” Lena murmured and waited for Kara to take a seat on the couch, so she could position herself close enough for their knees to touch.
