Lena had an exceptional gift when it came to calculations and numbers, but she could not for the life of her understand how the most advanced technology known to their civilization could ever compute that she would be the perfect mate for Kara Zor-El. The matrix must have been suffering a critical glitch in its system, because Lena despised Kara.
The announcement about her mate came in a silver envelope, which Lena torched before either her mother or brother would notice it. She could do nothing to challenge the matrix’s final choice, but she still had the week ahead before the Feast of Zhaol and there was still time to fix the issue if it was indeed an error.
While the whole situation was intolerable, the only complication that could make it worse was if her family knew about it in advance. Her brother had been priming her for greatness her whole life, and being bound to a member of the House Zor-El would be a permanent fault and handicap to achieving her full potential.
As she fretted about the future, Lena dressed in a drab dark blue gown to suit her hopeless mood. She fastened a gold belt around her middle and placed her hairpiece on her head to restrain her curls.
It was unavoidable that she would cross paths with Kara that week.
Krypton’s tried and true method to keep each class in their place was a rather loose caste system based around professions and their houses both belonged to the Science Council. She could have attempted to steer clear of Kara, but why bother?
Better to deal with the situation before the fool told anyone of the matrix's decision.
She had always resented Kara a little, even as a child. They were complete opposites in every way.
Kara was the epitome of light, she laughed too loudly and smiled too brightly and Lena hated how effortlessly friendships formed for her. Lena, on the other hand, was sharp and direct; she scoffed more than she laughed and her smiles were a rare sight to behold. She was precise, dedicated and practiced self-discipline, which was something Kara had yet to master, along with the ability to act her age. Lena had seen her just last week trying to fit three pieces of fruit into her mouth at once to amuse her friends.
Lena spent more time working on projects than cultivating a social life.
Even when she had entertained the notion of making friends at the age of ten, everyone she approached gushed about Kara. They left her to play with the little blonde alpha, who bounced around oblivious to how her presence pulled everyone toward her and away from Lena.
Like a black hole.
Kara had sucked out all of Lena’s hope of finding a peer to connect with or anyone at all who would be capable of understanding her.
One day on her way home, the bubbly annoyance had dared to walk beside her. Kara had thrust a red flowering plant into Lena’s arms, then ran off with a pleased grin. Seconds later, a rash spread over Lena’s pale skin because the plant had been toxic.
From that day on, Lena knew in her heart that Kara Zor-El would forever be a torment in her life.
Making friends with anyone was a futile pursuit, but science, knowledge and technology? They were worth her dedication and Lena excelled at finding solutions to difficult problems.
By the time she turned fifteen, she established herself as a true prodigy. While everyone else let their hormones get the better of them with talk of future mates, and what life would be like when they were twenty and the matrix assigned them their perfect match, Lena remained laser-focused on her work.
Kara had bothered her in class a lot during that year — always hovering nearby and doing something foolish, like mixing chemicals to make them foam brightly all over the place, or tinkering with small robots that climbed onto Lena’s desk to get in the way. It was one of those annoying machines that had come close to costing Lena the class prize when it toppled her project off the desk, and she was convinced that Kara had been trying to sabotage her so she could win instead.
The majority of their interactions had somehow, in some way, been to Lena’s detriment and the idea of being bound to someone so calamitous was enough to make Lena furious. Perhaps that was why she stalked into the Science council lab with the intent to yell at Kara only to falter when she saw the look of concentration on her face.
It was easy to hate Kara when she did things that irritated Lena, like talk, or move, or breathe - but then there were moments when Kara seemed still and at peace, her boisterous energy tamed, and it vexed Lena to find her enthralling.
It took her an instant to realize she had stopped in the doorway, her gaze burning into Kara’s face until the alpha finally noticed Lena and scrambled to cover what she had been doing.
“Lena!” Kara gasped, her smile delayed and eyes wide behind her goggles. “Hi – I – you – uh – we – hi—”
“Obviously a mistake has been made.” Lena dryly expressed in lieu of a greeting. “We should seek out The Council to make sure the matrix hasn’t suffered a critical error before it affects someone else. They’ll be able to assign us our proper partner as soon as the problem is resolved.”
Kara appeared to be frozen, her lips parted and eyebrows drawn together to reveal a crinkle of confusion between them. Her mouth formed words that her tongue didn’t deliver and then all at once Kara seemed to jolt back to the present. “Wait, I—but that’s—I mean the—the matrix doesn’t make mistakes. That’s why we use it. Why would you think that it’s broken?”
Lena strutted towards Kara’s lab table and cocked her head to the side in perplexed silence. She should have known she would have to explain the matter more slowly for the imbecile.
“You honestly don’t think we’re a match,” Lena scoffed and glanced down at the abomination that Kara had been trying to hide from view.
The tiny bot skittered around and sang a strange old mating song. It definitely needed to be tweaked because at the end it sounded like a dying thought-beast.
Lena sneered at Kara’s hard efforts to woo a future omega, until she remembered that was meant to be her. While she appreciated the handcrafted components that went into the small bot, her first instinct was to push it off the table and put it out of its misery.
“It baffles me how you’re one of the highest ranked scientists in our academic community when you spend your time on frivolous projects like this. Hurry up,” Lena urged in desperation and attempted to haul Kara up by the arm. They had precious little time to dawdle when her reputation was at stake.
“Okay.” Kara mumbled and all but tripped over her own feet to follow after her.
Although Lena had the right intentions by trying to ensure that her future wouldn’t be determined by some malfunction of the matrix, it turned out that the council held no patience for those who would assume their advanced technology lacked in some way. They were informed in no uncertain terms that the matrix was performing as it should, and Lena swore she saw a flicker of a smile on Kara’s lips that she wanted to smack off her face.
They walked in relative silence back to Kryptonopolis.
Kara offered to buy her lunch, but Lena’s stomach was twisting and turning at her rotten luck and she was in no mood to be around Kara.
“Yeah, I’d rather spend a night in the Scarlet Jungle.” Lena huffed, and Kara kept her mouth shut during the rest of their long stroll.
She avoided Kara at all costs for days afterwards, and her plan to keep her family in the dark seemed to have worked because she caught Lillian musing aloud about how odd it was that no envelope had been sent to announce Lena’s mate yet.
“I suspect they’ll announce it at the feast tonight.” Lex supplied with a roll of his shoulders and a gleam of amusement in his eye.
Lena felt sick at the notion, but if she didn’t attend that would be worse. There was no hiding from her fate any longer, so she sucked it up and dressed in the garb of mourning because she would be spending the rest of her life with the one person she couldn’t stand. If only space travel was permitted, she would volunteer for an expedition beyond Krypton and hopefully never return. She sat in her bedroom for as long as possible considering her options.
Lena only ventured out to find her mother after coming to the conclusion that there was no other way out.
“There you are,” Lillian lilted and took in her attire with a troubled and disapproving frown. “You can’t wear that to the Feast of Zhaol. It’s a celebration, for Rao’s sake. Change so we can leave. We don’t want to be late.”
The minutes were ticking down until Lena would have to stand on the Jewel of Truth and Honor and exchange bracelets with Kara Zor-El. Lena had no choice but to listen to her mother, and she disappeared back into her bedroom to dress in her full regalia for the day ahead.
They arrived within the crystal halls where the feast would be held, and she saw the gathering react to the sight of her in her gown — white as driven snow and just as delicate, with a sheer veil and a light crown of pearls and diamonds.
Kara stood in a blue suit with the House of Zor-El crest emblazoned on the front, already indulging in in the celebratory feast that was meant for after their nuptials. Her eyes locked with Kara’s from across the room and she hated that she instinctively took a step towards her.
“Where are you going?” Lillian snapped and wrenched her back by the elbow while tightening her teeth into a smile, which she projected around the room at any onlookers. “I just heard Kal-El tell Lex that our houses are going to be united. Kara is your main competitor for the spot of speaker on the Kryptonian Science Council. Please, for the love of Rao, tell me that I’m having a stroke and that the matrix hasn’t chosen Kara Zor-El for your alpha.”
“No, mother, unfortunately for me and everyone that has to deal with you, you’re in perfectly good health, and it’s true, I have been paired with a Zor-El.” Lena was unable to keep her attention from Kara, who wandered towards her with purpose in her stride.
The confidence Kara exuded was both surprising and distracting, and Lena took a shaky breath before the alpha reached them. She looked good in blue with her golden hair tied back to show off her high cheekbones when she smiled. Lena felt something inside her react to it. Naturally, she resented Kara even more for daring to evoke something as close to attraction as she would allow herself to admit.
“Lena Luth-Or. I wasn’t sure if you’d actually come after we found out the matrix named us mates.” Kara admitted, clueless to how Lena glowered at just for approaching and speaking of the sore subject.
“You look radiant.” Kara earnestly declared and Lena loathed the way her cheeks brightened at the compliment. “I have a gift for you, if you’d like to come to my table—”
“She wouldn’t.” Lillian cut in sharply, her tight smile still in place and not about to drop. It was a deceptive mask that Lena had seen over the course of her life, and it kept everyone else oblivious to the anger that was ready to burst from her mother like a geyser of lava, ready to incinerate everyone. “Family sits with family until the ceremony.”
“Oh, well, when we’re sitting together afterwards, I’ll give it to you.” Kara insisted, her smile faltering as she nervously fixed the cuffs of her suit.
“Yeah, I’ll bet there’s a great many things you expect to give me, but you can keep them all to yourself,” Lena intoned with a sharp glance up and down Kara so that the alpha would understand her meaning — but as it happened, no one was more dense than a Zor-El.
“Oh, but – it’s in our vows that we’re supposed to be thoughtful and generous, honorable and true.” Kara recited the standard code that couples were supposed to follow, naïve to what Lena had been implying.
At least if the thought of mating hadn’t crossed Kara’s mind, Lena might not have to follow through with that wedding night tradition.
Lena gave Kara a gentle push in the direction of her table and glanced over her shoulder at her furious mother.
“I’m actually going to sit with Kara so she can give me her gift now. Half of the little surprises she’s given me over the years have been toxic or dangerous, so maybe this one will finish me off before I’m bound to her forever,” Lena explained within earshot of Kara, then she grabbed the alpha by the hand and dragged her away before the situation became any more uncomfortable.
Kara looked crestfallen by Lena’s aggravation and idle hope of death.
When they reached the table, the alpha pulled a chair out for her with a hopeful smile that Lena never returned. She grudged having to thank Kara for anything, but she knew if she chose to be rude that people would talk and her reputation, which she worked so hard to maintain, would be tarnished. “Thank you.” She muttered, though she refused to smile.
“You’re welcome.” Kara said and compensated by smiling bright enough for both of them. She slid into the chair next to Lena and pulled out a small box that she handed over tentatively. “I made this for you.” She explained, her voice quiet as she gazed at Lena with a mixture of apprehension and pride.
Lena felt her stomach lurch as she thought of the terrible little robot that she caught Kara making days ago. If it was as humiliating as she thought, she would rather toss the gift than open it.
“Why?” Lena asked, before she could stop herself. “Is it going to explode the second I unbox it?”
Kara worried the inside of her lip and surprised Lena by announcing so quietly she had to strain to hear her, “I know you hate me. I mean I-I don’t know why you do, but can you just open it anyway? Please?”
Lena would have liked to list the ways in which she hated Kara and give detailed examples of why it was justified, but she could feel other guests watching them and so she seethed quietly and untied the ribbon to open the box. A small, hovering robot emerged and zoomed in a circle over the table before stopping to scan Lena’s face. This was a sleek design, much better than the ridiculous singing hunk of metal she had seen at the lab.
“Lena Luth-Or.” It squeaked out, and then twirled in mid air. “I am programmed to show all of your exceptional talents and achievements.”
The little robot promptly projected a hologram before them that showed her as a child, solving mathematical equations that others had yet to figure out in her class. It transitioned to when she made her first robotic helper that she named Pizzly, but then she remembered that Kara had designed one too. That brought back old resentments over the fact that Lena had been second among her peers to build one.
On and on the robot twirled, giving glimpses of all of Lena’s accolades and important moments in her life, and Kara sat with a smile on her face as she watched them unfold.
“Why did you make this for me?” Lena asked in a soft voice of suspicion, as the impressive little bot settled down and folded in on itself to form a compact cube. She picked it up and turned it over in her hand to appreciate its beautiful engineering. “You scrapped your other project and still managed to pull this off in a week?”
“Nuh — well, no.” Kara shook her head and her face tinged a pinkish red as she gestured for Lena to check the side of the robotic cube, where a date was marked into it. “I started working on it five years ago. I’ve liked you for a long time, Lena, and I know — I know you consider me a nuisance, but I really hope that I can change your mind.”
It stunned Lena, and as she sat re-evaluating their lifelong rivalry, she had an epiphany.
“Oh — all of those times that you were obnoxious and in my face — those were your misguided attempts to woo me,” Lena blurted. “You’re very bad at flirting.”
“Uh — yeah, I guess so. If the matrix hadn’t named me as your match, I doubt you would have ever figured it out that I’m interested in you.” Kara freely admitted and pushed a plate across the table towards her with all of Lena’s favorites. As it so happened, earlier when she saw Kara loading up on sweets, they had all been for her.
“You’re right about that.” Lena intoned, lifting her brows at Kara as she reached for one of the honey-dipped fruits on the plate. “I mean it — you’re about as smooth romantically as a blood-bloom cactus, and that’s being generous.”
Kara shrugged as if she had gotten used to Lena’s blunt remarks long ago. “Maybe.” She considered aloud as she watched Lena bite into the fruit and lick her lower lip. “But I never gave up, and I have no regrets about that. Even when you glared at me for days and cursed me under your breath, I still thought you were pretty great.”
Lena wasn’t sure how to respond to that, so she took her time chewing as her mind worked over all the instances when she had been wrong about Kara. She realized, far too belatedly, that Lex had colored her vision red when it came to Kara because of his long standing feud with Kal. Add in her competitive nature that her family had fostered, and it was no wonder she came out of the gate swinging with a grudge.
“I was awful to you our whole lives,” Lena muttered. “How could you still like me?”
“Pretty easily,” Kara laughed, and leaned closer to look directly into the her eyes as she confessed. “I could never be sure how you saw yourself, but from my point of view? You’ve always been incredible. I didn’t really care about coming out on top in our Science Guild, but you? You glowed like Rao whenever you made something and that was a sight I wanted to see more than anything else. I never quite learned how to make you laugh, but once or twice I caught you smirking when one of my creations malfunctioned, so I tried to find new ways to entertain you with silly experiments.”
“I have to be honest, I thought you were just playing dumb all of these years to lull me into a false sense of security. More than once, you out performed me after one of your mistakes.” Lena dragged a berry through the glaze of golden honey and brought it to her mouth and for a second, she suspected that Kara had ulterior motives when she offered her the fruit.
Kara seemed to be focused on her lips, and to test her theory, Lena sucked on the ripe, thick twellian pear until its juice ran over her tongue.
The atmosphere around them shifted as Lena was a little more intent with what she was doing with her mouth, just to distract Kara. Though the whole point had been to get a reaction, she wasn’t quite prepared for how Kara’s pheromones smothered her. She set her pear back on the plate, then considered her current situation and how it was similar to all of those other times she had tried to frustrate Kara when they were younger.
In every instance, it led to a new set of frustrations for Lena, and this proved to be no exception — because she began to feel a sexual frustration.

They were practically pressed against each other and Kara growled under her breath in appreciation as she leaned forward to whisper in Lena’s ear, “So you do like me.”
Lena wouldn’t dignify that with a response, but only because she was having a crisis over the realization that they shared an attraction. Her vision tunneled as she inhaled Kara, both the familiar scents and the strange pheromones that freed her of inhibition.
Somewhere, Lena knew her mother must be watching on in abject horror as she reached out to take Kara’s hand.
All around them, other families from the Science Council gathered to witness their union, and Lena would have resented being a spectacle if she paid them any mind at all. Her focus stayed on Kara, whose alpha energies were suddenly riveting and powerful.
President Tyr-Us of the Kryptonian Council greeted the crowd and began to recite the common marriage invocations to Rao.
“Here we stand today upon the Jewel of Truth and Honor to celebrate the union of the houses Zor-El and Luth-Or.” Tyr-Us joyfully exclaimed and gestured with both hands clasped to each of them in turn. “By the grace of Rao who kindled the sun, they will find truths discoverable only within each other, and a lasting bond of love that begins with the festivities of zhaol and will grow more unwavering with every passing day. Through zhaol, the omega becomes the alpha, and the alpha the omega.”
Kara slipped the bracelet with her house colors onto Lena’s wrist, and she placed her own onto Kara as Tyr-Us explained the virtues that would guide them in their commitment to one another.
The ceremony moved fast, as they were not the only houses to be joined that day, and then Kara led her through the throng of onlookers and away from the noise of the feast.
It was part of the custom to retreat to the suites that had been designated to new couples during the Feast of Zhaol.
Each room was vast and luxurious, with wide open windows that overlooked the firefalls and crystal mountains.
Kara kept her hand entwined with hers the entire way, and when they ascended to their room at the top of the building, Lena felt her anticipation rise with the elevator.
Their room was gorgeous with high ceilings and chandeliers that sparkled romantically. The furnishings were minimalistic, and there was a large mating chair in the middle of the room. The bed was so wide it surprised Lena, but the sheets were silk and she loved the feel of them on her fingers as they walked by. They would spend the next two days here, and then explore the rest of Krypton in a month-long celebration of their union, as was expected.
On the table by the window overlooking the crystal mountains, there was a bottle without any label, the contents of which glowed a bright blue. Beside it sat two long stemmed glasses and she saw Kara stare at it with interest.
The elders had consulted the Science Council to invent a potent liqueur that would boost fertility among new couples for a prolonged period of time. Whether or not they chose to use it was entirely up to them. Many Kryptonians opted to use the birthing matrix due to their complex DNA, but it was often celebrated when couples conceived through zhaol.
“We don’t have to drink it.” Kara finally murmured, her smile soft as she gazed at Lena as if she was as spectacular as the fire falls. They had yet to even kiss, and Kara seemed to be deferring to her for final say on whether or not they would mate.
The birthing matrix would be a foolproof way of following through with their duties, and yet when Lena glanced at Kara, she discovered she wanted the natural experience. It wouldn’t help her pride if she came right out and admitted it, so she poured them each a cocktail with the belief she could handle the strength of it.
“Let’s just pace ourselves,” Lena whispered as she held out a glass to Kara, who swished it around before taking a tiny sip. She watched Kara’s eyebrows lift in delighted surprise at the taste and how she licked her lips afterwards. “Do you like it?”
Before Kara could confirm with a nod, Lena sampled it, and the cordial flavor blazed a trail of warmth down her throat. She carried her drink towards the seat at the window and patted the spot beside her.
With an ungainly movement, Kara tripped in her direction—but then she righted herself, drew her shoulders back and took her place beside Lena. They both became shy, but the second time that Lena took a taste of her drink, she felt a little bolder.
“I have to admit I’ve never seen an alpha before—I mean, not like that. I’ve never even gone on a date.” Lena expressed in honesty as she peered out at the bright molten fire that sloshed along the volcanic rock in view of their window. The temperature-protective glass reflected its heat in Lena’s face, or otherwise she was beginning to feel the effects of her drink.
“I haven’t either,” Kara admitted with a scrunch of her face and shrug. “I was too busy trying to get you to notice me, so I never really looked at anyone else.” She laughed, maybe because she felt embarrassed, or perhaps in relief to know she wasn’t alone.
From the way Kara gulped her drink, Lena could only assume she needed a boost of courage for what she was about to offer. “Do you want to see me?” Kara asked, the streaks of silver in her blue eyes like mesmerizing fractals of ice.
Lena nodded, and Kara dragged the top of her suit off and then lowered her pants. Her strong shoulders and muscled arms were well defined, and her breasts were full and perfect.
