“I’m fine,” Lena had muttered, and although she peeked up at Dr. Danvers, she immediately directed her gaze back to the floor. “I’ve just been – bored.”
Bored?
That was the last adjective she had been reaching for, and yet in the end, it was that little mistake that had gotten her the opportunity to work closely alongside Dr. Danvers on a special research project.
Dr. Danvers had offered her a challenge straight away.
Two years had gone by since then, and Lena had earned two advanced degrees while working as Dr. Danvers’ research assistant.
Her work involved modeling the cores of planets across several different solar systems to compare them to Krypton. Using Python and Matlab, Lena tested models and calculated how each planet would respond to the conditions that led up to Krypton’s explosion.
To make her calculations as accurate as possible, she needed to study the biosphere and plant life of each planet. She sent away for samples and spent whole afternoons creating wet slides from them.
It might have been a dull job for someone else, but Lena liked the professional atmosphere of the lab and wearing heels and a short skirt every day.
While she was investigating how each planet reacted to rising radiation levels, or certain chemicals in the atmosphere, Lena also began studying how Dr. Danvers reacted to her.
If she wore a skirt that tapered far above the knee, and light fishnet stockings with a pair of four inch pumps, Dr. Danvers would get flustered and retreat to the opposite side of the lab.

Why don’t I take you?” She suggested it easily with a slight crease of worry between her eyebrows as she added, “I don’t want to leave you standing out here in the dark alone, but if you’d rather call a cab, I can wait with you until it arrives.”
What was a girl to do when offered such an invitation?
Lena felt her heart flutter, and her feet made the decision before her brain could persuade her out of it. She was already walking around the car to get into the passenger seat before she consciously realized it.
“Thank you, Kara. I guess my friend had better things to do tonight,” Lena mumbled shyly, inhaling the soft leather scent of the seats and the pine air freshener.
Once Lena was buckled in, Kara pulled off with a sigh, “Well that’s not very responsible of them, but at least it gives me the chance to say how impressed I am with all of your research. You’re a brilliant and talented young woman, Lena, and I would never have been able to get that recent grant without you.”
Kara’s bright smile disarmed Lena, and she found herself grinning back as she gushed, “Oh please, you’re basically a legend. You inspire hundreds of people every day. I can only hope to accomplish half of what you have.”
Either it was the shadows in the car, or Lena had caused a blush to spread over Kara’s face. She found it endearing and stared perhaps longer than she should have, because when they came to a stop light, Kara turned to her, and for a second a palpable heat radiated between them. She swallowed and turned away with a laugh that caught in her throat.
“So where is it I’m taking you?” Kara asked. Her hands were tight around the wheel but her smile was soft and relaxed as she glanced at Lena.
“You can just drop me off in town,” Lena stated impulsively. Her palms were sweaty and she was far too focused on Kara’s hands. She wondered what they would feel like gripping her thighs like that, and bit her lip to try and shake the thought of it. “I don’t want you going out of your way just for me. I’m sure you’re busy.”
Kara chuckled as if Lena had told a joke and tipped her head to the side to confess, “Lena, the only plans I have for tonight is to pick up Chinese food on my way home, so don’t worry, I’m not going to be late for anything. I can eat pot stickers and lo mein later.”
Lena wasn’t sure what compelled her to say, “That sounds so much better than leftover pizza,” yet the words flew out of her mouth all the same. She dryly explained, “I share an apartment with friends and cooking isn’t exactly our forte.”
Kara fell silent for a brief moment, her teeth embedding in her lower lip before she asked, “Well why don’t you join me and I can drop you off afterwards?”
It was almost pathetic how fast Lena accepted the offer, and how once inside the professor’s apartment, all she could think about was how much she wished Kara would give her a different kind of education. She sat down on the sofa, opened the buttons on her royal blue coat and crossed her legs, only to play with the hem of her dress while Kara ordered their food.

Lena casually glanced around the apartment for any signs that Kara lived with someone.

Kara tipped her head to the side and squinted as she considered it. “Um, I think I might have one lying around, let me see what I can do.”
Lena watched as Kara poured two glasses of coke and then rummaged through her cabinets for a straw. She eventually found one in a drawer, and the way her face lit up made Lena grin.
Dr. Danvers had one of the most brilliant minds she ever had the pleasure of working with and she was an absolute dork.

“Thank you, Starbucks.” Lena teased as she accepted the still-wrapped straw from the major coffee chain.

“No, but there is someone I’m interested in.” Lena admitted and deliberately toyed with the tip of the straw as if she was doing it absentmindedly and not entirely in a calculated way. “You know, you’ve been drinking a lot of coffee lately. I’m surprised you didn’t make one.”
Kara looked a little baffled and her cheeks turned pinker. She blinked a few times and met Lena’s eyes with a confused smile, “I’m sorry?”
“At the lab, you grab a cup at least two or three times a day.” Lena intoned and sipped her drink, if only to give herself a reason to peer down at Kara’s lap. The fabric looked a little tighter and she quirked a dark eyebrow at the way the bulge had gotten bigger.
“Oh well— I — I hadn’t noticed that it was so frequent.” Kara said awkwardly and took a gulp of her soda. “I guess I run on caffeine.” She joked, though her smile was tense and her laugh sounded strained to Lena’s ears.
Lena continued to suck on the straw and swallow while Kara watched intently. “I try to avoid coffee most of the time, ever since I attended that lecture that Jack Spheer gave on the correlation between caffeine and a lower sex drive.”

Kara’s eyebrows furrowed as if she was personally offended by Lena’s choice, and in her haste to sit up she almost toppled her plate over. “Really, that’s uh—why?” She questioned, and settled the plate in her lap. “I mean he’s—” Kara squinted slightly, as if trying to find something nice to say about him and settled on, “Well I suppose some people might find him interesting.”
Oh, Lena shouldn’t have felt so pleased with herself at the hint of jealousy in Kara’s tone, but her grin was positively wicked as she nodded along. “He is, isn’t he? He spent a good deal of time discussing the connection between imaginative play, and sexual desires where it applies to engineering. His new train design certainly backs up his theory.”
There was no way to disguise the appalled way Kara’s jaw dropped and she floundered for a good few seconds as she tried to appear neutral. “Why would anyone even…” She trailed off only to back track. “With a mind like yours Lena, I dare say you’re well beyond anything Maxwell Lord could ever hope to understand, but if you... enjoyed... what he had to say-- ”
Rich, dirty laughter bubbled up inside Lena and she leaned over to touch Kara’s forearm as she admitted, “I’m joking, Maxwell never held a talk, and even if he did, I’d never attend it. I just wanted to mess with you a little.”
Lena took her hand back and twirled a chopstick between her fingers before she scooped up a dumpling from Kara’s plate and popped the entire thing into her mouth with a triumphant smirk. She chewed and swallowed before flirtatiously licking her lower lip and elaborating, “You’re always so focused on work. You should take a night off. You know, loosen up, talk about something fun.”
Kara frowned in perplexed silence and blushed a beautiful bright pink before she shook her head. “I spend so much time at work I think I’ve forgotten what fun even is.”
“Okay so that’s a lie,” Lena lilted and leveled Kara with an amused chuckle. “You practically dance whenever we’re making new discoveries, but,” She held her hand up as if to pause the conversation and reached for her bag, “since you mentioned how you have no life—”
“Well now you’re just being rude.” Kara teased in return, and added with a slight grin, “I have a life, it just mostly revolves around working and sometimes sleep.”
There was a guarded look in Kara’s blue eyes that softened when their gazes locked. It made Lena think of melting ice and she reached into her bag to pull out a flyer she had taken from a bulletin board on campus. It advertised a cooking class for couples and she clutched it tightly, crinkling the shiny paper.
“Hey I’m not judging, I don’t exactly have a life outside of the lab either,” Lena laughed. “Not many people want to get to know the new prodigy, especially when she’s younger and smarter than they are.” She muttered, her smile faltering as she tried to ignore the seriousness of how lonely it could be.
Flickers of recognition and understanding passed over Kara’s face and she reached over to place a comforting hand on Lena’s knee. “I know you’ve probably heard this before, but take it from an alien that landed here as a pre-teen: it does get easier, Lena,” Kara gently assured her. “And anyone who isn’t smart enough to see how great you are doesn’t deserve to be your friend anyway.”
A wonderful tingle shot up Lena’s leg at the contact and she thrust the flyer into Kara’s hands before Kara saw how breathless she had gotten. She pressed on with what she had been planning to ask Kara.
“You know, I’m great at chemistry, but somehow I’m a disaster in the kitchen.” Lena confessed and pointed at the flyer, which detailed all of the different gourmet meals that the instructor of a cooking course would teach the participants to make. “I already signed up for three of these lessons, and I planned to drag my friend Eve along with me, but why don’t you join me? Kara snorted under her breath, and made a face as she peered down at the flyer. Her lips pulled tight and she pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose as if debating what to say. “Wouldn’t your friend be upset if you gave her spot to someone else?” She finally asked, and avoided Lena’s eyes as she waited for an answer.
“You mean the one who decided to go to a party instead of picking me up?” Lena countered sarcastically and quirked a dark eyebrow. “I can’t say she would.”
“Well when you put it like that.” Kara smiled with a hint of uncertainty in her tone. “Full disclosure, the last time I tried to cook anything I almost set the kitchen on fire, which I guess is a good enough reason to learn from a professional.” Kara sighed dramatically, but she grinned at Lena and stood up to affix the flyer to her fridge with a magnet. “Don’t be surprised if my sister calls you to thank you personally.”
Lena never heard from Kara’s sister – but the following Tuesday, she got the privilege of seeing Kara not only panic as she tried to beat eggs and incorporate flour into a mix, but she also got to see up close and personal just how clumsy the usually-methodical genius was when faced with a complicated recipe.
Kara moved around like a small natural disaster in the kitchen, and it was endearing to see the way she tried so hard to keep up with everyone else.
“Breathe,” Lena encouraged, and subtly leaned into Kara so that she could whisper, “We study planets for a living. Together I’m sure we can make a cake.”
They couldn’t.
When the cake came out of the oven, it was simultaneously over cooked around the edges and raw in the middle. The Chef was amused, but told them not to give up.
Kara arrived at the lab the next day with a slice of chocolate cake just for Lena to apologize for ruining the one the night before.
Lena perched on her stool to eat it and raked her fork through the icing while she watched Kara with a glimmer of desire and appreciation in her eyes.
After Lena finished devouring the cake, she wrote a thank you note on Kara’s whiteboard and then started adding her most recent findings to her data map of planetary systems.
Around the middle of the afternoon, Kara tugged up a seat beside her to review Lena’s most recent work.
“I’ve identified a planet with a biosphere similar to the one on Krypton. I’ve been running a lot of simulations to determine how that planet might respond under different sets of conditions,” Lena explained and brought up her data set, which included environmental factors, gases in the atmosphere, and tectonic plate activity. “If I had to form a theory at this point, I would say that Krypton experienced a slow heating over time, so slow that plants and animals were able to adapt to the new conditions—but the rise in temperatures made the planet less hospitable to life.”
Lena clicked through a few slides to show her comparisons based on the planet Xolnar, which seemed to also be experiencing a slow-heating.
“I think it’s likely that while the Kryptonians were depleting the planet of natural resources like oils and minerals, they were also pumping other chemicals back into the soil,” Lena stated. “I don’t have any hard evidence of course, but there’s a certain kind of metal on a neighboring planet called Peluna. If the Pelunians were also using Krypton to off-load this toxic metal, and the Kryptonians decided to dispose of it the wrong way, it could have caused a large-scale explosion.”
“That’s a brilliant theory, Lena,” Kara whispered in awe and scrolled through Lena’s calculations and input data. “Mind if I borrow this for a little while?” She carried Lena’s tablet around, occasionally pulling at the frame on her glasses as she worked through problems in her head. An epiphany must have struck her, because she rushed off to her computer.
In a database about Krypton, Kara located a file about Pelunian metals.
“This has to be it,” Kara muttered to herself and her whole face radiated pure excitement with her findings. “Lena, I think there’s enough evidence here to substantiate your theory!”
Lena scooted up from her seat and hurried over to Kara to squint at the documents on her computer screen. As a smile of triumph dimpled Lena’s cheek, Kara drew her into a congratulatory hug and spun her around in excitement.
“Thank you, thank you,” Kara chanted hotly against her ear, overjoyed by the development in their research. “You’re amazing,” She praised and her lips pressed a chaste kiss to Lena’s cheek.
Lena froze in surprise, but then she tightened her arms around Kara’s back and melted into the embrace. “So are you,” She stupidly said, blushing profusely as Kara released her to quickly type something up.
“We should celebrate,” Kara declared, her grin radiating delight as she turned towards Lena. “My treat. Dinner anywhere you want.” She insisted, pulling off her lab coat to hang it on a rack by the door.
The sight of her bare forearms caused Lena’s mind to fog up with lustful thoughts and her gaze wandered to the front of Kara’s pants. She thought about Kara’s hands, and how they might feel if they were in her hair, holding her while she was on her knees.

“No.” Kara grinned and playfully clapped her on the shoulder. “I just meant that I know you probably don’t think that having a meal is much of a celebration.”
For someone so eloquent, Lena felt tongue-tied and flustered as she tugged on her jacket. She wondered if she could, legally, shoot herself into space to avoid further embarrassment.
“So, where would you like to go?” Kara asked, ushering Lena out of the lab and through the hall that led to the east parking lot.
“There’s that new Asian fusion place downtown,” Lena suggested, for lack of a better option and because Kara had such a fondness for Asian cuisine. “I hear they have giant soup dumplings on their menu.”
“Two great discoveries in one day,” Kara marveled and threw her hands up as if tickled by her excellent luck. She chivalrously opened Lena’s door for her and then dashed around to the driver’s seat.
Lena leaned over to get the door for Kara in return and then buckled her seat belt. While Kara fussed with the radio, she rolled down her window and propped her arm up on the leather. She planned to stare out at the landscape and avoid gawking at Kara at all costs, but her traitorous eyes continued to roam.
Wetting her bottom lip, she followed the hard curve of Kara’s bicep down to her hand where it rested on the wheel. She glanced back at Kara’s mellow face and then honed in on the soft bulge in her slacks.
“Do you ever wish you had a someone special in your life when celebrating these big moments?” Lena asked at random, and pulled open her bag as an excuse to search for her sunglasses. She wanted to put them on her face to prevent Kara from seeing where her gaze restlessly wandered, but she never opened the case.
Kara’s thumbs lifted off the wheel as she tipped her head to the side, “Usually I tell myself it doesn’t really matter, but between you and me?” She glanced at Lena, then turned her attention back to the road with a sigh. “Nothing emphasizes how alone you are quite like success.” She forced out a laugh and hastily added, “Sorry, I didn’t mean that to sound so cynical. Besides, I’m not alone. We’re sharing this victory.”
Lena’s smile was filled with adoration and understanding, because she knew how Kara felt. “No I get it. Having family and friends isn’t the same as having someone you connect with on a deeper level. Someone who gets you, and sees you for who you are, not just what you are.” She whispered, her teeth catching her lower lip in intrigue as she stared at Kara.
“Yes, you’re exactly right. When you find it with someone, you’ll know.” Kara’s smile faltered as she pointedly kept her gaze on the road. Her hands were tight around the wheel again, and her tone was serious as she muttered, “It's a special thing, a connection like that.”
“Yeah, it is,” Lena readily agreed, and maybe she had lost her mind, because her heartbeat was in her throat and her hand was moving of its own accord to rest on Kara’s thigh. The contact sent a rush through Lena and she inhaled deeply.
Kara’s thigh jumped beneath Lena’s warm palm and they both stilled, perhaps in shock over the heat that sizzled between them and thickened the air.
