The first time Kara noticed her was in the university cafeteria. She was cleaning off her tray while Kara was filling her own, her dark hair tied back to reveal sharp cheekbones, a strong jaw and a face so beautiful that Kara felt a pleasant warmth spread through her. It wasn’t until she had walked off to pay for her meal that Kara realized she loaded up a tray full of peas and dinner rolls, and several other students were staring at her in confusion.
The mystery girl disappeared by the time Kara paid, and she spent the rest of her night dwelling on dark hair and alabaster skin when she should have been studying.
The second time Kara saw her she was on the opposite side of a stairwell, and she humiliated herself by tripping over her feet as the girl walked past her, oblivious to Kara’s existence as she typed on her phone.
After three weeks and no trace of her, Kara had all but given up hope that she would get the chance to meet the girl. So when she wandered into the library to find her sitting at a desk, surrounded by stacks of books, Kara immediately forgot why she stepped foot in the place to begin with and what she was meant to be doing with her time.
Her hands felt clammy and her mind went blank because all Kara could see was the girl in the loose fitting, soft green sweater. It exposed just enough cleavage to make Kara stare for too long — until she caught sight of a pen between full, red lips and how the girl's jaw worked as she sucked on the end of it.
Distracted beyond belief, Kara had intended to walk over and introduce herself, but instead walked straight into a bookshelf. The noise of it startled a few people, and Kara ducked behind the shelves to admire the girl from afar — all pale skin and dark eyebrows that made Kara’s insides feel funny.
Kara finally located the textbook she meant to look for in the stacks, but she held onto the sudden impulse to seize the moment and introduce herself. She wandered over to slip into the seat opposite the girl before losing her nerve.
“Doing some light reading?” Kara grinned, but the girl only smirked slightly and narrowed her eyes curiously at her. “Yeah, me too.” Kara exhaled easily, her gaze locking with the palest green she ever encountered. It made her think of sea glass and stained windows, and for a second she couldn’t say anything as the girl stared.
Kara watched her lift a dark eyebrow questioningly and felt her pulse pick up.
“So what are you studying?” Kara asked. “From the looks of it, seems like an entire bookshelf.”
“I’m writing my dissertation on the quantum entanglement of moving bodies,” The girl reported in a tone of amusement and flipped the page in the book that she currently had propped open. She jotted down a few notes on a legal pad and then tucked her work off to the side. “I designed a model and I’ve already run all of my tests, but I need a more robust discussion of the theories that informed my whole process.”
Kara nodded sharply, intimidated by the talk of dissertations and advanced physics. She knew enough about physics to hold her own in a conversation, and yet when she watched Lena’s lips move, she struggled to breathe, let alone speak.
Kara leaned over to glance down at the squiggles of the girl’s handwriting and then propped her chin in one palm.
“Intriguing,” Kara drawled, glancing down at the girl’s cleavage again without much self-awareness. She snapped out of her distraction and smiled, letting out a nervous laugh. “So you’re like a Ph.D. student?”
“Yeah, I’m like a Ph.D. student,” The girl echoed, scrunching her brows together as she took Kara in with a hint of a smile, which she bit from the corner of her lip. “What are you reading? The Elements of Journalism? How scintillating.”
Kara grinned at the faint mockery in the girl’s tone and raised her brows as she insisted, “What, you didn’t know that the pen is mightier than the sword? For shame.” She admonished with her book, and then settled back in her seat as the girl rolled her eyes.
“Well we can’t all be geniuses studying quantum entanglement.” Kara laughed, and sat up a bit straighter with a sigh as she dramatically lamented, “If only you were a freshman like myself I might have been able to help you out.”
The girl gave her an incredulous look that wasn’t nearly as hostile as it could have been and Kara clarified, “I mean with the moving bodies part.”
Much to her astonishment, Kara watched a slow blush creep up the girl’s cheeks.
“You don’t even know my name.” The girl intoned, but she was looking at Kara with interest and that was the sign she had been hoping to see.
“I’d like to,” Kara whispered earnestly, her own heartbeat matching the girl’s as it picked up the pace. “I’m Kara.” She announced, and stuck her hand out. “And you are?”
“Hoping I don’t regret this.” The girl teased, but she clasped Kara’s hand and shook it firmly as she lilted, “I’m Lena, and for the record I should be a freshman, but it turns out I am actually a genius.”
Kara forgot to take her hand back, and it took Lena quirking a dark brow to make her remember herself.
“Lena.” Kara sighed out, testing it on her tongue. It fit the dark haired beauty well, and Kara grinned stupidly at finally getting to know her name. “All this studying is exhausting, why don’t we head over to the cafeteria and I’ll buy you a cup of coffee?”
Lena motioned to the book in Kara’s hand absently. “You haven’t even opened that yet.” She informed her dryly, but there was an amused gleam in her eyes that Kara couldn’t get enough of and a smile curling at her lips.
Kara stood up and shrugged lazily. “I read super fast, and you’re gonna need the caffeine if you’re planning to read all of the books in the library.”
Lena scooped her texts from the table and began to pack them up in her satchel. She slung it over her shoulder and lifted the notes that wouldn’t fit in her bag.
“As it so happens, my favorite coffee shop is about two blocks away and I was planning to stop there on the way back to my dorm to grab a sandwich, so I guess I can go with you.” Lena seemed reluctant to attribute her decision to Kara’s persuasive skill, but she fell in beside Kara and the blush on her face revealed more about her than what she said. She could be assertive, but she was also shy in how she snuck glances at Kara, and Kara decided she liked that about her.
The crisp spring air outside was refreshing after the stuffiness of the library, and Kara breathed it in with a no doubt dopey grin on her face.
“Hey, if you’re planning on getting food anyway, why don’t we upgrade the coffee to dinner?” Kara tried to keep the hopefulness out of her voice, but she felt excited and bold, and from what she could tell her charm was working on Lena. She rocked on her heels and smiled, laying it on thick as Lena narrowed her eyes suspiciously and laughed.
“The next thing I know I’ll be agreeing to head back to your place. For now coffee will be just fine. If I still think you’re cute afterwards, we’ll see about having dinner together in the future.” Lena’s open flirtation was another confidence booster and Kara lifted her shoulders in a delighted little shiver.
“You think I’m cute?” Kara reiterated, her smile brightening as a gentle pink blossomed over Lena’s pale skin, radiant and warm.
Lena tucked her chin towards her chest but Kara could still see the way she fought the grin before her teeth caught her lower lip. She fumbled with the books still in her hands as she reached for the door.
“Oh uh, here, let me help you.” Kara suggested, and before Lena could dismiss the gesture, she took them out of her hands and opened the door for her.
“Who said chivalry is dead?” Lena smirked, but the slow way she blinked felt somehow intimate as she passed Kara.
Lena’s jeans were tight and hugged her curves, and Kara’s eyes lingered on her shapely ass as she walked off. The Kryptonian let out a slow breath before she hurried after Lena.
“You’re witty,” Kara quietly reflected, her gaze gravitating back to Lena’s face as they walked side by side.
“You’re observant.” Lena declared, her pale eyes flicking towards Kara as she added conspiratorially, “Must be the journalist in you.”
“Maybe,” Kara mused, her smile softening as she walked them through the coffee shop to a cozy booth. “Or you’re just worth noticing.” She bumped her elbow into Lena’s, sensing the girl’s eyes on her, and supplied flirtatiously, “I personally think it’s the latter.”
Their impromptu coffee date went on longer than expected, and even two mochas and a hot chocolate later, Kara shamelessly ignored the time as it passed.
Lena lit up when she discussed her studies, her delicate hands moving with animated sweeps, and whenever she felt self-conscious, she seemed to touch her neck and glance away.
Kara was enamored. She drank in Lena’s presence like the sweet beverages she sipped and basked in the warmth that came from talking to Lena.
When the last few people began to leave the coffee shop, and Lena realized how late they had stayed, Kara made her official move. “I’d like to do this again, even if it’s just coffee. Though I do know a great place that does the best pot stickers you’ll ever eat.”
Lena folded her arms on the table as she considered Kara’s suave attempt to ask her on a date. “Why don’t we meet at the library on Thursday afternoon? We’ll get some work done first, then we can go to dinner.” She held Kara’s gaze for two seconds before bashfully glancing down at her arms. “I actually – I have a confession to make. I’ve never really gone out with anyone before.”
From the confident way Lena carried herself and easy banter, Kara never would have guessed that.
Lena bit down on her bottom lip and stared at Kara hopefully. “Okay, so there was this one guy in high school, but it was only because we were both Mathletes, and I didn’t have many other friends who could talk advanced calculus. The point is, I don’t want to make things awkward, so I figured I’d give you fair warning.”
“Okay, fine.” Kara sighed dramatically and leaned on the table with her elbows to look into Lena’s eyes. “I can’t have you hogging all the embarrassing confessions, and in the spirit of total honesty—”
“It is the journalist way.” Lena cut in with a slight, ephemeral smirk that alluded to far more amusement than she was letting herself show.
“See, you get it,” Kara teased right back, and then cleared her throat to level her crush with a serious look. “Technically I’ve never dated anyone either. I might have been hoping to see you again so I could, you know, actually talk to you and get to know you.”
Lena narrowed her eyes suspiciously and tipped her head to the side. “Where else have you seen me that you couldn’t talk?” She inquired quietly, and if not for the way her mouth twitched as she fought a grin, Kara would have thought she was offended.
“Kinda hard to have a conversation when you trip walking up the stairs to Stanley Lecture Hall.” Kara laughed, and reached for her cocoa just to tap her fingers along the cup. “Or in line at the cafeteria when you’re already heading out.”
Lena made a soft hum and tipped her chin up to scrutinize Kara playfully. “So what you’re saying is you’ve been stalking me?”
Kara rolled her eyes and then sat up straight, her fingers finding the frame of her glasses to push them up. “More like admiring casually from a distance.”
“Is that why you walked into the bookshelf, then hid for five minutes before coming over?” Lena’s deadpan tone was delivered with mischief and Kara saw the way the humor reflected in the crinkle of her eyes.
“Excuse me,” Kara gasped, full of fake offense as she clutched a hand to her heart. “I wasn’t hiding. I was finding an important book for my studies.”
“So important you left it on the table to help me carry mine.” Lena pointed out, a dark brow raised to emphasize her statement as Kara glanced around for the missing text.
“Well someone had to,” Kara laughed, her gaze on Lena’s mouth until it dropped to her shirt. When Kara caught herself staring she snapped out of it and supplied smoothly, “Unless the study of muscle strain is part of your thesis.”
Lena traced the rim of her cup with a slow smile, and repeated Kara’s own words back at her. “You’re witty.”
“You’re observant,” Kara stated without missing a beat. She was already hooked on Lena after spending a few hours in her presence. “I guess you have a little journalist inside you too.”
“Not yet.” Lena lilted, a faint, though pretty tinge highlighting her cheeks.
Kara’s mouth opened, then closed, then opened again but her mind was blank and no words would come out.
Well, not blank, she was certainly thinking of things, just none she could talk about with Lena. She shifted in her seat and subtly moved her hand beneath the table before exhaling softly.
“Walk me back to my dorm?” Lena suggested, already getting to her feet as she glanced at the clock on the wall. “You can put your hands to good use and carry my books again.”
Kara didn’t hesitate at the chance. She grabbed every book she could before Lena reached for them.
When they were walking back towards campus, Kara flipped through one of the volumes and murmured casually, “You mind if I borrow one? You can text me when you need it.”
Lena side eyed her for a second, her full lips curving at the corners as she indulged Kara’s subtle flirtation. “Or, and just hear me out.” She reasoned, her hand waving in front of them as she spoke. “I could keep the book and just give you my number instead.”
Kara couldn’t contain her grin, or the bounce in her step for that matter as she glanced at Lena and felt the joy radiate through her. “Well, I mean, if you insist.”
As they stopped at Lena’s building, Kara passed off the books and true to her word, Lena put her number in Kara’s phone and then handed it back with the softest look Kara had ever been graced with in her life.
Kara beamed at her, unable to control her giddy feelings as she glanced down at Lena’s contact information.
“Text me when you get back to your dorm so I know you’re safe?” Lena asked and then they parted ways with Kara nodding vigorously in agreement, despite the fact that there were few risks to her safety on the entire planet.
She didn’t bother explaining that to Lena — and not just because she selfishly wanted to text her. Kara was worried how Lena might react to finding out her new friend happened to be an alien with super powers and anatomical differences to boot. She chose not to dwell on it for the time being, and literally floated back to her dorm, only realizing her feet weren’t touching solid ground after a few seconds.
Her palm became sweaty as she clutched the phone in her pocket and she pulled it out once she was in her building and striding up the stairs to her second floor bedroom. She flopped on the bed the second she was through the door and typed a message to Lena.
That was the beginning of a whole new routine—one which factored in frequent texts in between classes, heart emojis and snapchat exchanges. She ended each day by texting back and forth and making plans for their first date on Thursday.
Their study date was filled with stolen glances and a smuggled pack of gummy bears that Kara insisted was a great incentive to help her retain information when she evenly spaced them out over the pages. Lena refused to believe it, but eventually accepted a handful when she chewed through the cap of her pen.
Kara spent more time reading Lena’s facial expressions while she worked than she did reading her own book. In her defense, she had already read it twice just by flicking absently through the pages and Lena was infinitely more alluring.
“You’re staring.” Lena had finally murmured, her eyes still on the page while she jotted down notes.
“I’m witnessing a genius work.” Kara corrected effortlessly, her gaze following the slope of Lena’s porcelain throat and then the plunging neckline of her sweater. Rao felt alive in Kara, running through her veins as she burned with desire. “You have an amazing mind.”
“Which is located in my head, and not in my chest.” Lena smartly informed her, the start of a smirk tugging at her lips as Kara jerked upright with a flush of embarrassment.
Lena kicked her under the table with the tip of her shoe. A light bump really that spurred Kara to nudge her back, and then suddenly the soft warmth of their legs pressing together anchored Kara in place and she dutifully picked up her book to hide her smile.
By the time Lena finished taking notes, Kara was half reclined in her chair with her knees trapping Lena’s between them. Once or twice she caught the woman behind the desk giving her curious looks and Kara faked a yawn one too many times for Lena to miss it.
“If you’re tired, we could get something to eat another day,” Lena suggested with a forced smile. “I know I study a lot but that’s unfortunately the case when—”
“No, no, I’m not tired!” Kara shifted to sit upright, eyes bright and alert as she grinned at Lena enthusiastically. “I was just comfy, and I figured you’d prefer the librarian think I was exhausted instead of trying to get closer to you.”
Kara bumped her knee against Lena’s with a soft smile and Lena laughed despite the expression on her face.
“Well in that case, settle in, I could be here a few more hours.” Lena drawled, her eyes sharp and lips pursed while Kara tried not to look crestfallen. She must have failed miserably because Lena snapped her book shut and smirked wickedly, “Aren’t you glad I’m just messing with you?” She asked, and began to pack up. “You promised me the best dumplings. I’m not about to pass that up.”
“Oh wow, you’re the worst.” Kara feigned devastation as she got to her feet and immediately lifted Lena’s overfilled bag to sling the strap across her shoulder.
“Don’t ever forget it.” Lena coyly fired back and walked ahead with enough attitude to make Kara stop and stare.
Kara’s gaze dropped to her perfect ass and she hoped that the subtle sway to Lena’s hips was all for her as she hurried to catch up.
It took fifteen minutes to walk to the restaurant, and Kara fell behind a few times just to check Lena out. When they arrived, they slid into seats across from each other at a small but cozy table.
Lena picked up the menu to browse and her eyebrows pinched together in curiosity. “There’s a sharing platter named after you. It comes with 15 vegetable, 10 duck, and 10 prawn dumplings.”
“What can I say? I bring my appetite when I come here.” Kara chuckled bashfully and dipped a piece of crispy wonton into the sweet and sour sauce that was already on every table.
Her favorite waiter Kim noticed she was in, and hurried over with a rose in a vase and two sharing platters. Kara had dropped the rose off earlier on her way to the library.
“That’s for you, since this is technically a date,” Kara explained with a small wave at the long stemmed rose, and Lena’s whole demeanor changed from playful to soft as she appreciated the flower.
“But I didn’t get you anything.” Lena pouted as she dragged the vase closer to smell the perfume of the rose, and then she opened the flap on her satchel. “Unless you like Belgian chocolates.” She pulled out a box of candy and slid it across the table to Kara with a sly smile.
“I love them.” Kara gushed, her smile a little dazed as she reached out to hold Lena’s hand. It was the first time they held hands—the first time they properly touched, and Kara felt the energy pass between them. Tingling and warm, not quite electricity but something else, something better that left Kara breathless. “Thanks,” She whispered, her fingers tightening around Lena’s as she added, “I can’t wait to share them with you.”
The intensity of the moment must have been overwhelming because Lena swallowed thickly, and turned her attention to the food on the table. “Now correct me if I’m wrong but a sharing platter is typically meant to be split, so why do we have two?”
Kara wondered if she had made Lena uncomfortable. Lena’s heart was beating faster and she wouldn’t make eye contact and that was the last thing the Kryptonian had wanted. Kara self-consciously moved to take her hand back but Lena refused to let go, and Lena’s heartbeat sped up just a little as she glanced up at Kara shyly through her dark lashes.
Kara could stare into her eyes all night; it was a funny realization, that even with her favorite pot stickers in front of her she would feel more content to just sit there and hold Lena’s hand. “I can pretty much eat my own body weight in pot stickers. I mean I’ve never tried, but I’m confident I could.”
Lena smirked slightly, her eyes roaming over the selection of dumplings. “Well I appreciate that you ordered plenty.” She smiled when Kara ran her thumb over the top of hers, and picked up a dumpling to sample.
“So why is this your favorite place to eat?” Lena asked around the first bite, a happy little moan escaping her lips at the burst of flavor.
“Well besides the fact that everything here is delicious,” Kara chuckled, and watched Lena chew as she listened. “Honestly I’ve… always been able to eat a lot, but I stay active.” Kara blurted, her normal excuse tumbling out of her mouth so fast that she felt foolish for even saying it to Lena.
Being an alien on Earth brought its own problems, but Kara had never understood the stigma that came with having a large appetite. It was seen as shameful, but her metabolism was off the charts and because of her powers and alien biology, if she didn’t consume a lot of calories she felt drained. It was one of the first things she had discovered when she landed on Earth as a kid. When she started school, Kara learned very quickly that people judged her for snacking, and so she tried to go without one day, and inadvertently starved herself to the point of fainting.
“At most restaurants… the staff or the customers, they look at me funny if I order more than what they think I could eat. I guess more than they think I should eat, but not here.” Kara explained with a shrug and a fond smile as she glanced around at the familiar, bright red and gold walls. “They’ve always been kind to me here.”
It was more about the sense of acceptance than the food. Kara plucked up a dumpling with her chopsticks and popped it into her mouth with a bright twinkle of joy in her eyes.
“So what you’re saying is this should be our regular hang-out spot,” Lena concluded and helped herself to another duck dumpling, which she dipped into sauce before bringing it to her mouth. “If you hadn’t convinced me with your sweet speech, the food speaks for itself.”
Kara liked the soft sound of Lena moaning around a mouthful, and for a second she stopped eating to listen.
“Yeah, I think we should come here all of the time,” Kara agreed, the corners of her lips curving at the thought of hearing Lena make those noises on a frequent basis. Her mind drifted to other ways of accomplishing the same goal, and that prompted her to blurt, “Hey, want to come back to my dorm and watch a movie tonight?”
Lena arched an eyebrow at her as if she had guessed at all of Kara’s secretive schemes. “Which movie?” She asked, and her smirk grew as Kara’s face lit up in panic as she scrambled to name a title.
“The new Jumanji,” Kara blurted, remembering that her older sister had dropped off the DVD along with a care package a few weeks back.
She had yet to watch the movie, and from the intensity and mesmerizing heat in Lena’s eyes, she doubted she would see more than a few minutes of it.
“Tempting,” Lena stated, and finally broke off the contact to lift her napkin to dab at the corners of her mouth. “But I have an early meeting with my advisor tomorrow.”
Kara cringed and took her hand back, because she had come on too strong — pushed too hard too soon all because of the excitement of being around Lena, and now she probably thought Kara was only after one thing. “Oh, right, yeah. I—”
“How about Saturday?” Lena suggested instead, and Kara couldn’t believe her ears for a second. “You can order take out, I’ll bring popcorn, and you can text me your dorm number. We’ll make a night of it.”
“Yes!” Kara blurted, barely able to contain herself as she grinned at Lena.
Was this really happening? Rao, she hoped so, because her heart was hammering almost as fast as Lena’s and she was starting to realize that it was because they were both mutually thrilled to be around each other.
“Sounds like a date.” Kara affirmed, just in case there was any doubts about what they should call it.
“A second one at that.” Lena teased and casually declared war by lifting a dumpling off of Kara’s plate. “I’m full of surprises.” She smugly stated, and then her smile softened and Kara felt her insides liquify into a pleasant puddle. “Something tells me you are too.” Lena mused, and Kara all but choked on her dumpling, because her own surprises were the kind that might send Lena running.
“You have no idea.” Kara managed to rasp out, and then changed the subject before Lena could ask further questions.
It turned out Lena wasn’t joking.
Kara found out during their walk back to campus that Lena had been toying with the idea of using nanobots in the field of medicine, and described it as a silly hobby to tinker with such advanced technology whenever she felt stressed. Kara couldn’t keep her mouth shut about how amazing it was and, in a fit of brainlessness, confessed that she liked to fly when she was stressed.
Lena had laughed, and made a remark about how she hadn’t pegged Kara as a frequent flier. It took all of Kara’s willpower not to rush off into the night to quietly die at almost exposing herself.
They didn’t kiss.
Lena looked receptive to it as they lingered outside her dorm building, with her chin tipped up as Kara leaned in closer. The subtle scents of her perfume and the delicate notes of excitement set off Kara’s own.
They shared breath for only a second, and that was all it took for Kara to feel the stirrings of something embarrassing. The fabric of her pants became a little more restrictive and when Lena stepped closer, Kara experienced a surge of panic. Thankfully, someone bounded up the steps and it gave Kara an excuse to step back. The moment was ruined, but they laughed and said goodnight, and Kara rushed away to her own dorm.
That night, Kara dreamt of dancing dumplings and Lena’s lips, of endless stacks of books and their hands entwined. When she awoke it was to the sight of wet sheets and the evidence of her imagination gone wild. She stripped the bed down and hurried to the laundromat on campus before anyone else was using the machines.
Kara met Lena later that day in the library for an unofficial study date, and by Friday night they swapped over a hundred texts. Some were flirty, but mostly they were getting to know one another.
Lena had a soft spot for baby animals and bubble baths, she liked pizza, but hated peppers and onions as toppings. She had ambitions of helping humanity, and while she didn’t want to follow her family's footsteps exactly, she wanted to prove to herself that she could achieve greatness like the rest of them without anyone’s help.
In turn, Kara shared that she would eat just about anything if it was covered in cheese— a fact that Lena claimed she would test. She told Lena how she liked to sing ballads in the shower and would pretend it was raining, and how she danced around with a hairbrush when she was bored. That she was adopted when she was twelve and that she was grateful to have an older sister even if they weren’t biologically related. She told her she wanted to be a journalist because she wanted to help people by speaking their truths.
Their night ended once Kara sent a selfie of being tucked up in bed, and Lena sent one back with a thick book cracked open and a pen tucked behind her ear, and the promise to go to sleep soon.
Kara spent an hour on Saturday afternoon deliberating over what to wear for her date with Lena.
In the end, Kara chose a comfortable blue tee with a NASA logo on the front, and a pair of light wash jeans, and she had left her hair down and curly. She pulled out the entire bucket of snacks she kept in her closet and then phoned in a pizza order, which arrived just before Lena did.
Lena rapped on the door and when Kara opened it, she stood tongue-tied for a full minute and stared.
“Wow, you — you’re breathtaking,” Kara exclaimed and moved back to let Lena pass, then rushed to fill a paper plate with a few slices of Lena’s favorite pizza.
