End Simulation - Chapter 8

Lena stared down at her phone in silent horror as it generated a report based on her own input data, biorhythms and brain waves.
Hope sent through her recommendations — a protocol that involved a selective re-structuring of behavior that they had been testing extensively with animals.
It took Lena a few seconds to process it and breathe, but her mouth was opening like a fish out of water and tears blinded her. She had no thoughts about the situation, just emotions and instincts that drove her straight into Kara’s arms.
Kara ended her call with Alex when Lena emerged from the bathroom and then gathered her up as she sobbed with quiet, hiccuping gasps.
“I thought I was doing good,” Lena cried, not at all in the mindset to even wonder how Kara might take her abrupt outburst. Her heart thumped faster and her fingertips tingled from anxiety, which affected her like a case of the chills.
“Lena, hold on, what are you talking about?” Kara asked, holding her by the shoulders and trying to understand Lena’s hysterics, although she could hardly communicate.
Lena handed over her phone without pause, because her own tech had deemed her an unreliable personality.
She didn’t trust Kara, but she also didn’t trust herself anymore, because there was no way the entire system she had designed could have been that faulty. She sniffed back tears while Kara read the data, and only then Lena softly supplied, “I never forgave you for lying to me. I have these horrible thoughts about us all of the time, even though I desperately want you - I’ve always wanted you. I believed I could fix my trust issues with this tech. My goal was to fix everyone, so no one would lie or cheat or hurt one another.”
She had little idea of what she was blurting out in the rush of the moment, but Kara watched her solemnly with her head tilted back, then peered down at the phone again. Kara’s shoulders stiffened and her eyes glazed with recognition and frustration and an unidentifiable emotion that might have been anger.
“How does all of this work, Lena?” Kara asked with stern foreboding, like she suspected Lena of a foul play so terrible that just hearing that tone was enough to bring on another gush of tears.
Lena licked her lips and tried to blink the teardrops away, then she reached out to try to take Kara’s hand — but the alpha backed off too soon.
It stung to watch Kara stand across from her in disapproval and she took a desperate step forward, her heart thumping with the fright that she had ruined any hope of fixing herself.
Kara stared at her with her arms crossed, and Lena took a quick gasp of air before she tried to explain her tech.
“My tech tracks emotions in the subcortical regions of the brain and its algorithm attempts to figure out patterns of brain activity that lead to asocial behavior,” Lena whispered, providing information that barely touched upon what Kara really wanted to know, which was what happened after the brain monitoring took place.
Lena fell into her anxious habit of using her hands when she talked, and gestured as she clarified, “I thought I could alter negative thought patterns to ensure no one would harm anyone else, to make the world a safer place.” She believed in the concept wholeheartedly, but Kara’s reaction to the tech made her shrink.
It reminded her of the time when she was six years old and she showed Lex a small device she had built for safely extracting insects from the house. He had screamed at her for holding it too close to him, then took her straight to the cupboard, where he forced her to sit for hours in the dark whenever she displeased him.
“I can show you how it works,” Lena proposed with a little quiver in her voice, and then she waited—shut her eyes in the hope that Kara would agree, rather than refuse her outright or yell at her.
“Okay. Okay Lena, show me,” Kara agreed, still holding her standoffish pose, but then she held out her arms and Lena felt like she could breathe again. She nodded and stepped closer, fitting herself into Kara’s embrace, and waiting for the Super to take flight, for the rush of wind as they ascended.
The journey was a silent one, but Lena had never been more grateful to be close to Kara, and she knew she would still go to any lengths necessary to be good in her eyes, even though she still struggled with forgiveness.
They landed on her balcony at L-Corp and Lena led the way to the elevator that would take them down to her lab—except at the last second she swiveled and turned to Kara, determined to tell her every action she undertook in launching Non Nocere.
“I, umm, I altered Eve,” Lena whispered and glanced at Kara in time to see the disbelief and shock register, and then she hesitated in self-doubt.
“What do you mean you altered her?” Kara questioned, coming to a full stop beside the elevator banks and staring at Lena like she couldn’t fathom what she was implying.
Lena wet her lips again and thought about how her brother and Eve repeatedly drugged her and held her at gunpoint. “It’s better if I just show you,” she softly whimpered.
They boarded the elevator and took it down to her lab, where dim lighting and cool air greeted them, and she revealed her protocol notes to Kara by bringing them up on her computer. Kara stood back and took them in with an uncomfortable expression on her face.
“Lena, emotions are messy and complicated, but you can’t just decide to remove the bad ones and keep the good.” Kara seemed at a loss for how to handle the situation and hung back until she came out with, “None of this is okay or right.”
It visibly pained Kara to be confronted with Lena’s tech, and Lena decided impulsively that she needed to take drastic measures to prove that her whole plan could work instead of failing so miserably.
She began setting up a medical bay for herself, but then the lights went out, and someone put a hand over her mouth and pressed the barrel of a gun to the side of her head.
Lena reacted fast and elbowed the person in the ribs, and she heard Kara grunt and the sounds of her fighting, which only ended when neon green Kryptonite shined through the pitch black lab.
She shouted out a breathless Kara, and panicked as she experienced a tiny stab of pain in her belly. The distraction made her easy pickings for her attacker, who forced her down onto the floor.
The next few minutes were a blur, and she decided that she must have fainted from the Kryptonite exposure because she was suddenly restrained on a cot and the lights were back on, revealing Kara incapacitated and trembling a few feet away on the floor.
Lex’s familiar presence wrapped around her before she even spotted him in her peripheral vision, and she wondered for a split second how he had managed to cheat death before another twinging pain went through her lower belly and brought tears to her eyes.
“Sis, it’s been much too long.” Lex conducted himself as always, with the pomp and expressiveness of a political candidate. His flair for dramatics was still intact, and he strode forward to check out the processing unit, where a screen displayed all of the recent Non-Nocere data.
“Leave Lena alone,” Kara demanded and braced her arm against the floor. She seemed to be trying to push herself up, but unable to gather the strength with the Kryptonite lighting up her veins.
“I killed you — I thought I killed you,” Lena stuttered out breathlessly and then whimpered, placing a hand against her belly where it hurt.
Kara was watching her, lifting her head from the floor and craning her neck to see Lena, and she reacted in shock when she heard what Lena said about committing murder.
“Like in so many other instances, you thought wrong,” Lex declared and peered at the screen, keying in a few of her protocols. “You have poor judgment, Lena, but a brilliant mind, and that’s why I fully intend to spare you. The Kryptonian and your offspring, however…”
He shouted “Miss Teschmacher” in his usual, grating way, and then Hope dutifully appeared to stand at his side.
“I have to say you made quite an improvement to this one’s personality, but I did tweak her a bit for my own purposes afterwards,” Lex admitted, and when Lena gave him the most disgusted look, he waved his hand dismissively and assured her, “Not like that.”
Hope clutched one of Lex’s journals, and he took it from her to show Lena the page where he had scribbled the formulas that she had in part used to construct Non-Nocere.
“You followed my trail of crumbs nicely,” Lex remarked and flipped through the pages, then slammed the book shut to make Lena flinch. “I hope you enjoyed reading all of my private thoughts about you.”
He set his journal aside and inspected a set of virtual reality lenses, ignoring how Supergirl was struggling behind him under the influence of the Kryptonite.
Lena watched Kara, her eyes filling with tears as she imagined the pain searing through her skin.
“I’m grateful for you, Lena,” Lex muttered, and popped open the case on the virtual reality lenses, preparing them for Lena’s eyes. “I never could get this particular process to work, and to use it with Miss Rojas’ virtual reality lenses was an absolutely genius move. But just like when we were children and playing chess, you allowed your emotions to get the better of you. You haven’t been paying attention, and so while you’ve been distracted by your infatuation with Supergirl, I’ve been here in your stead.”
Lena scrunched her face and tried to twist away from Lex when he stepped closer with that ever present smug grin.
This whole time she had been so conflicted and focused on her own pain that she failed to realize the invisible strings he laced her up in. He had used her distraction to his advantage and now they were all going to pay the price of it.
“You’re a monster.” Lena acknowledged, horrified by who her brother had become, by who she almost became herself.
“I’m not the one in bed with an alien.” Lex snapped, the disgust flying out of his mouth along with flecks of saliva as he grabbed for Lena’s chin. His rage remained in thick veins across his forehead, but then he smiled, bright and deceptive, as if he wasn’t a threat at all.
“This was always part of your plan, Lena.” Lex reasoned, his tone almost soothing despite the biting grip of his fingers as he brought Lena’s face back to his to stare down at her with maniacal glee. “You just couldn’t deal with the fact that Supergirl had betrayed you. Couldn’t let go of the hurt. You made the tech to use it on yourself, and now you have your chance.”
“Don’t touch her!” Kara snarled, her eyes briefly glowing as she reached out a trembling hand to try to drag herself closer to Lena. She barely moved an inch, her skin lit up by the constant, throbbing green poison that reduced her to a broken, pitiful sight.
Lex laughed, a short and amused noise that mocked Kara before he turned his ire to Lena and scoffed, “This is who you chose to be with? Look at her, Lena. Look at how powerless a fragment of rock makes her. I knew we never saw eye to eye, but to mate with a Kryptonian? You truly lost your way.”
“No!” Kara yelled, but it was too late, because Lex had already pushed the lenses into Lena’s eyes, and the last thing she saw was his sneer of victory.
Lena’s vision reeled in a whirl of color and blended images until she was inside of a specific simulation.
She expected to have to confront her demons in the virtual reality, all of her bitterness towards Kara, and all of the terrible things she had done recently in the name of good — but instead she was standing in a peaceful nursery.
Kara sat in a rocking chair by a big bay window with a swaddled infant in her arms, and Lena smiled as she approached and peered down at the baby’s sleepy little face.
“She looks like you,” Lena whispered, shedding a tear, because the baby’s twitchy little nose did resemble Kara’s when she was in the middle of a dream.
Lena stood by the rocking chair with Kara for a minute more until the lenses began to glitch.
The vision before her blurred and fractured like a broken mirror, and through the fractures she saw flickers of her Kara crawling on her knees to reach her.
Vivid green scarred the alpha’s features, sharp and jagged, just like the fragments of the simulation that forced itself back into Lena’s sight, obscuring her reality with another new vision.
Kara was in the kitchen of a house Lena had never seen before. The alpha grinned as she swooped a spoon dramatically through the air for their toddler, who was laughing in a highchair.
“It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Supergirl,” Kara declared and popped the spoon into the baby’s open mouth.
The toddler’s face was smeared in sauce and her little hands were thrashing in excitement, and Lena experienced the pull of the simulation when Kara turned to wave her over, like she belonged with them.
A stab of pain in Lena’s abdomen brought a gasp to her lips, and just as the simulation of Kara darted towards her in concern, flashes of the real one broke through again. Noise filtered back to Lena’s ears.
Kara’s scream was loud and jarring, and it hit her as the alpha’s eyes burned incandescently and shot laser beams across the lab to Lex.
He deflected them with one of his energy shields, his hand transforming as his Lexosuit partially materialized to give him a Kryptonite canon. It blazed to life and then—
Fireworks exploded, bright and beautiful up above them, and Lena felt Kara’s arms around her, the alpha’s chin on her shoulder as they swayed under the colorful red and blue display. A little girl was holding Lena’s hand, golden hair poking out from under a baseball cap, and she was laughing. They all were. Lena finally had a happy—
“—family!” Lex shouted, jolting Lena out of the illusion, the allure of the fake life that was trying to drag her deeper into the virtual world.
Half of her lab was on fire, the wall blown out in the blast, but Kara was on her feet despite the Kryptonite pulsing through her veins.
“She is my family!” Kara roared back, and it was in that moment that she seemed to regain the strength to rush at Lex, slamming him into the floor hard enough to crack it.
Lex’s suit fused into the concrete slab beneath the flooring, and Lena could see the terror in his eyes as the flames jumped around them.
In the fight, her computer systems had been damaged enough that it had stopped her protocol, but Lena muttered “End Simulation” for good measure and powered down the lenses.
She barely had time to wonder why the simulations all reflected the good things in her life rather than the bad, and why her protocol had failed to alter her. Suffocating smoke gathered and DEO agents swarmed in, some of them extinguishing the leaping flames, and others preparing to scrape Lex off the floor.
“Kara.” Lena coughed on the fumes, then grimaced as another sharp pang went through her abdomen. It scalded and hurt in a way she had never experienced before, and she placed her hand protectively over her bump as she whimpered in distress.
The alpha was at her side in an instant and screaming out to Alex. Lena reached for Kara with both arms, and because she felt like she was on the verge of fainting, she whispered the most essential information, “I’m sorry, Kara. I am so sorry.”
She blacked out for a few seconds with Kara’s arms around her, and awakened outside on a stretcher with an oxygen mask over her face.
Alex and two paramedics began hooking her up to a regular and a fetal heart monitor, and Kara clutched her hand and repeatedly whispered, “I’m here, Lena, hang on. You’re both going to be just fine.” She pushed the damp hair out of Lena’s face and tried to meet her eyes.
“I’m sorry, too,” Kara emphasized and bit the side of her lip, then stuttered over her words. “I—I should have just let you in. We both made a ton of mistakes, but we can fix them. We will fix them.”
Tires screeched as the ambulance tore down the street, and in a matter of minutes everyone was rushing around to get Lena to the safety of the DEO. She couldn’t talk with the mask over her face, and her watery eyes stayed on Kara, who remained by her side the whole way.
“Kara, please step back and let me do my job,” Alex urged, bending over Lena to check on her before signaling to other agents to help move her. “You need to get under the sunlamps. I can’t believe you’re still standing.”
Kara didn’t budge, and went so far as to latch her trembling, Kryptonite-riddled hands around the safety bar on the stretcher. “I’m not leaving her side!”
“You won’t have to,” Alex reasoned, peeling Kara’s weak grip off the cot as she whispered, “She’ll be right beside you because she needs the exposure, too.”
Kara’s panicked breaths gave way to a pained and broken “Alex—” and then the alpha swayed on her feet. Her hand moved protectively to Lena’s swollen belly and an anguished, unholy screech built up within her.
Lena shook from her own heart wrenching sobs and Alex hurried to calm their hysterics before they took them both over. “Kara, Kara look at me. I’m not going to let anything happen to them, now get onto the cot before you pass out.”
A couple of agents had to drag Kara onto the bed and Alex helped three others lift Lena onto the one made up a few feet away.
Kara’s waxy complexion was tinged green, and she couldn’t lift her head up as the Kryptonite polluted every part of her, but she still reached out a hand for Lena as Alex wired her up to all kinds of monitors, and Lena took it.
As soon as the sun lamps switched on, Lena experienced a tingle of relief and tightened her grip on Kara. She wanted to console the alpha, who was still crying in silence with her other hand pressed to her forehead, but even without the oxygen mask covering Lena’s face, she wouldn’t know what to say.
For the time being, Lena could only offer comfort through touch. She shut her eyes while Alex worked around her and whispered a play by play of what she was doing while taking a sonogram.
Alex went quiet for a second, but when she spoke, Lena could hear the smile in her voice. “Baby is doing just fine.”
Lena blinked her tears away so she could check for herself and then she glanced towards Kara.
The alpha still had her fingers woven into her hair, but she was watching the screen like she needed to see every second of movement and every throbbing beat of their baby’s heart.
Alex stood at their bedside for a long time with the sonogram wand pressed to Lena’s bump, until the green poison started to retreat from her body.
“Both of you need to try to rest,” Alex encouraged and paused by Kara’s bed to check on her, and to whisper out an apology. “I just wanted to say thank you for using your watch to call for back-up, Kara. I know I haven’t always supported you or listened to you in the ways you’ve needed, and I’m sorry about that. I’m going to do better.”
Kara’s chin quivered and she managed a nod, but she seemed too emotional to do more than that. Alex dimmed the lights before she exited, and Lena listened to the sounds of Kara’s ragged breathing in the dark.
“I know you can’t respond to me right now, Lena, but I need to say what’s on my mind,” Kara blurted and lifted her head just to stare into Lena’s tearful eyes, heedless of the way it pulled at the wires attached to her. “We’ve been in each other’s lives for a long time, and I know that you’re a good person. You have the purest heart, and so when I look at this whole situation – the fact that you planned to use this technology to change your emotions, and to change other people – I can see how maybe it was motivated by a desire to do good and to protect yourself. That doesn’t change the fact that what you did took you down a bad path, because it opened you up to Lex’s manipulations.”
Kara prematurely tugged off a few of her monitors so she could sit upright and face Lena. “I am not throwing stones, because I’m aware that you’ve never been able to trust a single person, and I’ve always had friends and a family to support me. I just wish it hadn’t come to this – I didn’t mean to lie and betray you. Every single person I love is constantly at risk and that’s hard enough. I was in love with you, and I didn’t want anyone to come after you just to get to me. I am sorry my lie damaged our trust and made you feel like you had no one—that you could trust no one.”
Tears poured down Lena’s face and she lifted the oxygen mask to whimper, “I’m sorry, too. My plan was horrible and I couldn’t see that. I truly believed it would stop a lot of problems in our city before they started.”
Kara pushed herself off the bed to stumble forward, her chest heaving from stuttered breaths that she tried and failed to contain. “Do you—” She gathered Lena’s hands into her own, like she was searching for strength as much as connection, and whispered fearfully, “Do you still hate me? Because I want to say I can live with it, but I don’t think I can.”
Kara’s eyes welled with tears and she sucked in a shaky breath and held it as her throat quivered. “I want you.” She sincerely expressed, opening up to Lena with raw vulnerability. “I want us to be happy, and stable, and — and a real family. But we need to be better, for ourselves and each other, and especially for our child.”
The tremble in Kara’s voice carried through her hand as she splayed it over Lena’s abdomen. She rubbed gently, and her lips pulled into a tight line to try and lock away her panicked breaths. “So if you need time, I understand, but I’m in this if you are, Lena. No more lies or hidden feelings.”
Lena gave a little nod of agreement and moved her hand to rest on top of Kara’s in the hopes of showing she was on board with that plan.
“I don’t need more time,” Lena insisted and the tiniest smile formed on her lips, only to be broken by the way her mouth twitched out of habit to stop herself from crying. “I know what I did was extremely unhealthy, and I have a lot of work to do on myself before I can be a good partner and a good mother, but I will give it my all.”
She scooted upright and took the risk of holding out her arms for Kara, and they embraced like they hadn’t in almost a full year, since before Lena learned Kara’s true identity.
“You’re my best friend and I’ll always love you, Kara,” Lena whimpered into her shoulder, and the alpha’s arms tightened around her.
Alex rapped on the door as their moment came to an end. “Hey, I leave you alone for two seconds and you chose to stop following medical advice?” She asked and then smiled as she came over to fix the beds so they could lie closer together—now that they were all certain Kara wasn’t going to faint while she waited for her to do it.
They spent the night under Alex’s observation just to make sure they were truly in recovery, and Kara kept her arms wrapped around Lena the entire time that they slept.
Things between them felt different now, tentative in ways they never had been before, but Lena expected as much now that all their secrets had been purged. They came up with a plan, just like they did with any threat to National City, and took it just as seriously.
In the morning, Kara took Alex aside and asked for Kelly to give them a call. Lena had every faith that Kara wouldn’t share the ins and outs of what happened between them, but she still avoided Alex as best she could while in the DEO.
That evening, Kara arranged for a therapy session to take place in Lena’s penthouse, and Lena managed to secure a spot at one of the top birthing classes for them to attend at the end of the week.
Lillian hadn’t taken the news well about Lex’s attack, but she was content that he was stuck in a DEO cell with no way to bribe himself out. Even that wasn’t enough to stop the baby shower that Lillian had set in motion for the end of the month.
For the most part, Lena didn’t think about it. Her thoughts were preoccupied with all the damage she and Kara had done to one another, and how much of it could have been avoided if she hadn’t been blinded by the idea of hurting Kara in return.
The issues they had went beyond each other, and it took three sessions with the relationship therapist that Kelly recommended before Lena finally felt the anger inside her burst and seep out. She cried so hard she almost threw up, but Kara was still there — still holding her, still telling her everything was going to be okay and that she was proud of her for facing the demons she carried around inside of her for all of those years while growing up.
Kara broke down days later. The anger and grief of constantly feeling like she had to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders stemmed from her own planet exploding before her eyes, and how her mother's last words had been about protecting this new world and everyone on it with her powers. They had both lived through things no child ought to and those wounds had never healed.
It was a gradual process, learning to let the other see the darker, damaged parts of who they were, and sharing their past histories that influenced how they both related to each other.
The fear of punishment and rejection, along with the constant need to appear okay was so ingrained in both of them that being vulnerable took a lot of effort, but they worked at it over the course of weeks until it began to feel normal. They started to meet each other's eyes again, they touched without pulling back or apologizing, and they talked just like they had when they had been best friends.
Their relationship began to mend, and although they still had a long way to go, Lena was capable of feeling true happiness again.
She realized it during a birthing class, when she laughed so hard at Kara for faking her heavy breathing that she snorted.
“You look ridiculous,” Lena whispered as Kara made exaggerated faces to make up for her lack of breathing.
“I don’t want to accidentally freeze someone.” Kara explained, awkward and adorable with her red face and crooked glasses.
Lena’s heart beat a little faster with an unexpected jolt of love, and she reached out to cup the alpha’s cheek. “I know. You’re doing great.” She whispered, as if these classes were for Kara and not for her.
Kara’s face burned a little redder from Lena’s compliment, but she smiled and there was a sparkle of pride in her eyes.
The instructor of the class was a stern-looking woman in her fifties who took birthing preparation very seriously, and she started passing out yoga balls to each couple.
“Oh, oh, I want the blue one,” Kara excitedly called out, and she might have used a touch of super speed to grab the one she wanted. She brought it back to Lena with a grin and positioned it between her legs as they were instructed to do.
“Quick, which is bigger, this ball or my stomach?” Lena asked in such a rapid fire way that she doubted Kara would be able to think it through before responding. She wanted an honest answer and she hoped she could trip Kara up.
“The ball, duh,” Kara replied, keeping a straight face as she gave Lena a loving lower back massage.
“I thought we promised we weren’t going to tell each other anymore lies,” Lena teased and adjusted the ball that was keeping her thighs spread open. She never expected that Kara would get distracted by seeing her in such a bizarre position, but a faint and curious smirked pulled at her lips as she caught the alpha staring.
“Wide open legs,” The instructor sang out, and Kara’s guilt ridden blush told Lena all she needed to know about where her mind had wandered.
It would be terrible to taunt Kara, but the playfulness between them was something Lena wanted to cultivate, so she did what any self-respecting pregnant omega would in the middle of a crowded room. She shifted her ass under the guise of getting comfortable and rubbed herself against the alpha while simultaneously continuing her exercises.
“You okay back there?” Lena asked with a touch of innocence in her voice that Kara completely missed.
Kara was practically frozen behind her, the subtle change of her pheromones a clear sign that she was only thinking of one thing, and it wasn’t the birthing class.“Mmhmm, yup, totally, I’m—"
“Shhh!” The instructor hissed, her expression not the slightest bit amused as she glared at Kara long enough that other people glanced her way.
Kara reacted by doubling down her efforts not to move or breathe, or make a noise.
“Glasses, please demonstrate for the class what you will do to soothe your partner when she goes into labor,” The instructor demanded, and much to Kara’s embarrassment, she had to follow through while everyone was gawking at them and inhaling the scents of her clear arousal.
Kara began to massage Lena’s lower back again, and Lena knew it was doing nothing to dampen her libido. It had been a while since they had sex, and even outright humiliation wasn’t enough to counteract Kara’s desire.
“You’re an alpha, aren’t you? Put a little more strength into it, Glasses.” The instructor critiqued and Lena sympathetically ran her hand over Kara’s arm.
It probably didn’t help that when Kara did apply more pressure, it felt so good that Lena let out a small, breathy moan and suddenly Kara’s thumbs weren’t the only thing pushing into Lena’s back.
“That’s as hard as I like it,” Lena blurted and clasped Kara’s hands as a show of solidarity. “Thank you. She’s got it.”
“I don’t like distractions.” The instructor huffed, but everyone’s eyes were back on her, so she stopped being petty and continued the class.
Kara stayed quiet for the last twenty minutes, and it took almost fifteen of them for her to finally lose the erection. Lena could feel the deep breaths the alpha used to try and calm herself, but the tension between them only heightened from their proximity. Her skin prickled with excitement from every touch Kara graced her with and by the time the class was over Lena couldn’t wait to get out of there.
Lena’s driver picked them up outside and she remained as neutral as possible during the ride back to her penthouse. She worried that if Kara so much as touched her again, they would need to find an immediate way to put an end to their dry spell and doing it in public would be indecent.
