The winter months had come and gone, and the promise of spring sweetened the air. Every paired couple looked forward to spring and the fertility gatherings that would happen in stages. The newly mated couples would begin the Spring Festival season with a full weekend of being at one with their mate in nature. The fields were already set with borders of fabric that kept everyone else out and gave the couples what little modesty could be provided on an open stretch of land.
After their weekend of thorough mating, the next group would celebrate, and on it would go through the entirety of spring until eventually the Elders themselves would have their turn. It was in its essence what Lena had dubbed a sex festival. Long before she ever participated in the Mating Run, Lena had taken a great deal of pride in scornfully reminding her mother that it was a glorified orgy.
Of all the objections and heated arguments she’d had with her mother over the years, Lena was surprised by how quickly the chess board had been flipped. In light of Kara Danvers being her mate, suddenly Lena needed to be chaperoned everywhere by her older brother Lex, or worse, her mother.
While every other couple had spent months getting rigorously and intimately acquainted with their mate, Lena had been thwarted left and right by her own family, and her frustration was building to combustible levels. Every plan she made with Kara was hindered, from simple dates to more romantic dinners, and their relationship felt distinctly long-distance with most of their talking being through text.
Though Kara hadn’t complained, Lena could feel the tension growing between them. The animosity of her mother and brother wasn’t exactly helping, though they of course thought otherwise.
With only one day to go before the Spring Festival began, Lena finally cracked, and packed a bag with the intent to sneak out of the house to go to Kara. She made it down the steps and across the lavish foyer, but her hand had no sooner eased the door open than Lillian’s voice echoed through the house, disembodied and ominous like the ghastly omen she was.
“Why on Earth are you creeping around in the middle of the day like some common home invader?”
“To increase my chances of escaping without you or Lex glued to my side.” Lena called out to the sharp footsteps now approaching her from the hallway.
Lillian appeared with a sarcastic slant to her lips and a haughty raised eyebrow as she looked Lena over. “The last time I let you out of my sight you brought home a stray.”
Lena was appalled by the flippant remark and sputtered incredulously, “Kara’s not a stray. She’s—”
“Fine,” Lillian cut in smoothly, her hand dragging through the air as she compromised with a note of disgust, “She’s a mongrel. Which is why I’m trying to influence the Elders into allowing bereaved spouses the chance of finding a new mate among themselves on a separate run. By my calculations you can have someone more befitting your stature in another year or two.”
Lena laughed, a sardonic and hushed exhalation that conveyed her emotions succinctly. “I’d say you’re out of your mind, but this is just normal behavior for you at this point, isn’t it?” She accused, the jut of her chin sharp enough to be considered a threat. “I like her, and that more than anything should be your main concern.”
“Just because you like something doesn’t mean it’s worthy.” Lillian sighed in that dry, dramatic way that just oozed disapproval and leveled Lena with a look that said she should know better. “I’m simply looking out for your best interests.”
“You mean your money and reputation.” Lena fired back as she dropped the bag from her shoulder to cross her arms. She stared defiantly at her mother as if daring her to deny it and scoffed when Lillian rolled her eyes.
“Don’t be so naïve, Lena,” Lillian shrewdly persisted with pinched lips and narrowed eyes. “These are direct benefits you indulge in, and one day so will your children. Then you’ll understand why it’s important to find the right mate. Someone who fits.”
“Someone who fits.” Lena mocked right back and squared her shoulders to stand her ground. “You were perfectly content to let me be hunted down by those brutes and now that I have a mate that I’m actually happy with, you want to upend all of the laws and traditions you insisted were the pinnacle of our society.”
Lillian looked amused at her outburst, and Lena had half a mind to continue, but that would mean less time with Kara and that felt worse than losing an argument with her mother. “No, you know what? I’m not going to stand here and discuss your hypocrisy. I’m going out.”
Lillian’s gaze flicked to the door, then the antique clock on the wall, and she smiled as if that actually pleased her in some way. “Well, if you must, I can’t stop you.”
That set alarm bells off in Lena’s head and she could practically taste the machinations that must have been afoot as she insisted stubbornly, “I won’t be back until very late.”
“Suit yourself.” Lillian stated, and motioned towards the door as if to encourage Lena out of it faster.
Lena’s eyebrows furrowed into a dark frown and she hesitated with one hand outstretched towards the handle. Lillian didn’t even flinch, and Lena huffed out a breath and spun around to hiss, “Why aren’t you fighting me on this? What am I missing? Have you done something to Kara?”
“Paranoia doesn’t look good on anyone, Lena, even a Luthor.” Lillian berated, and went so far as to pick up Lena’s bag to hand it to her with an airy, “I haven’t done anything to your unfortunate alpha.”
“Not yet at least, but all in due time.” Lex stated as he strode down the stairs in a crisp new suit and smirked at Lena as if he was in on a private joke.
Naturally that sent Lena’s hackles up and she bristled instantly. “And what’s that supposed to mean? What horrible plan have you concocted?” She demanded crossly, her eyes darting from her brother’s smug face to her mother’s more glacial one.
“Oh, she didn’t tell you, sis?” Lex asked innocently, his head tipped to the side with a slow grin as he informed her wickedly, “Mother invited Kara over for a family dinner. Mercy should be here any moment.”
“I changed my mind,” Lena deadpanned with a sickening lurch in her stomach. “Death’s kinder than subjecting Kara to this.”
Lillian’s eyes lit up at the suggestion and she smiled wider when Lex muttered, “If that’s the case I can always add a dash of something special to her meal.”
“Don’t you dare!” Lena cried, her fists balled as if she might just thump him for even joking about it.
Lillian stopped the dispute with a critical glance down Lena that ended with a succinct, “Don’t bicker. It’s wasting time you don’t have. Our guest will be arriving any minute, Lena, and I’ve seen inmates dressed better than you currently are.”
“Well that’s fitting, considering you’ve been treating me like one,” Lena smartly replied, but she didn’t stand around to bicker with her mother, not when she wanted to be the one to greet Kara at the door.
She rushed off to her bedroom to change and threw on the first dress she ripped off a hanger – something short, black, and much to her dismay, even a little funereal.
The bell chimed as she was frantically trying to zip herself up, so there was no chance to pick a different option.
Her hair was a little ruffled and she had no time for make-up, but she glossed her lips as she hurried down the stairs.
Despite her speed, Lex already waited in the foyer and he opened the door when Kara knocked.
From what she could see around the obstruction of Lex, Kara was wet from head to toe.
“I’d ask if you forgot your umbrella, but there isn’t a storm cloud in the sky,” Lex drawled with a straight face, unblinking as he let Kara in and eyed Lena. “Well, don’t just stand there, sis. Get a towel.”
Lena suspected this was a scheme on Lex’s part, and she wouldn’t put it past her brother to have to turned on all of the sprinklers before Kara’s arrival so she would have to get sprayed if she wanted to be on time.
It might have also been a ploy to keep Lena away from Kara, because as she approached to greet her, Lex grunted out, “Lena, the towel.”
She shot him a glare of warning and then hurried off to grab a towel from her bathroom upstairs. By the time she returned, she found Kara standing stiffly in the parlor across from her mother and Lex.
Lena rushed into Kara’s arms without even taking the time to check her out.
“Lena,” Kara squeaked out in surprise when she kissed her in front of her family.
It was such a forceful kiss that it almost knocked the glasses from her face, and Lena prolonged it until her mother cleared her throat in agitation.
Lena took in the alpha’s appearance, from her navy button down to pressed green slacks, and her eyes might have lingered a little too long when she came to the bulge just under the belt.
“I’ve been missing you,” She explained and gave Kara another squeeze, both to breathe her in and because she wanted to make the most of the opportunity to touch her.
The subtle change in her omega fragrance gave insight into her private thoughts and Kara’s pupils dilated as she stared back at Lena with the kind of awe she had only ever seen mates share in movies.
“I’ve missed you too,” Kara whispered, and despite the heavy and disapproving glares of Lena’s family, the alpha still smiled and laced her fingers through Lena’s in a show of solidarity.
Protective and potent pheromones diffused around them and Kara stood straighter despite having a towel draped over her shoulder. Soft spatters of water dripped from her clothes.
Lillian stared at it as if she held Kara personally responsible for every droplet that landed on the polished wood floor. “Normally I’d offer any guest a seat, but I wouldn’t want to ruin the leather. I’m sure you understand.”
“Sure,” Kara murmured, her jaw hardening imperceptibly as her eyes shifted to Lillian.
Lex smirked, and in the guise of checking the time, clicked something on his watch that immediately drew Lena’s attention.
Not ten seconds later, Mercy was striding into the parlor completely dry, wearing a killer set of heels and a dress to match. She didn’t bother with courtesies, her gaze intently on Kara to suss out the alpha who refused to shrink under her scrutiny.
Lex turned to offer his arm to Mercy and appraised her with his eyes. “Now that we’re all here, let’s eat.” He suggested, and led Mercy down the hall and towards the dining room as they whispered among themselves.
“I’ll just inform the kitchen we’re ready.” Lillian lilted, but before she could walk off and feign total ignorance of Lex’s scheme, Lena rushed after.
Kara was barely out of earshot before she turned to her mother with growing contempt and hissed, “So when I use my phone I’m an annoying millennial, but when Lex rigs the sprinklers to his watch to torment my mate, that’s perfectly reasonable?”
“Your brother has always had a refined sense of humor.” Lillian insisted, but there was a twinkle of mirth in her eyes when she flicked them back to Kara, who tried to subtly towel off without drawing attention to herself. “Take our guest to the dining hall before she embarrasses herself by ruining the varnish in the parlor.”
Lena frothed in anger but strode off with her head held high, and all but melted when Kara flashed her a bright smile. “Hey, let me help you with that,” She whispered, and gathered the damp towel to adoringly run it over Kara’s face and shirt.
“Thanks,” Kara murmured, and brushed her nose against Lena’s neck to huff at her scent. “You look beautiful.”
Lena blushed a pretty pink when Kara’s hands settled on her hips and the alpha’s eyes roamed down her figure in hunger.
Lena lowered her own hands just a tad to Kara’s belt with the intent to cup her through the towel under the pretense of patting her dry. Her fingers were just about to graze Kara’s crotch when Lex let out a yell for them to hurry up, and Lena stepped back, flustered over her own boldness.
“I guess we’d better join them or he might set off the indoor sprinklers, too.” Kara joked under her breath, her eyes sharp and smile soft as she offered Lena her arm.
Lena accepted it with the idea of being extra affectionate just to rile her family—but to her annoyance, everyone else was seated when they walked in, and she and Kara would have her mother sitting between them.
“Kara, any dietary restrictions I should know about?” Lillian asked with a certain gleam in her eye, which promised she would start cooking with new ingredients if only Kara had an allergy to them.
“No, I don’t have any food allergies.” Kara answered with a wide-eyed glance at all of the dishes on the table that expressed her excitement. “Wow, this looks amazing. You really went to a lot of trouble.”
The alpha’s stride was confident, with an extra bounce in her step that seemed to irritate Lillian.
Kara pulled out Lena’s chair for her first and then she sat down. Her beaming smile made Lena’s heart race, not just because she loved her mate’s smile, but because adrenaline pumped through her bloodstream with the fear that her family would do everything in their power to ruin Kara’s happiness.
Lillian began serving the appetizers, a cheese board and oysters, and when she was done passing the plates around, her attention drifted back to Kara.
Kara poured sauce onto an oyster and lifted it to her lips. She was on the verge of swallowing it when Lillian came out with, “I see we’re skipping the part where we’re thankful for our meal and just going to town on it instead.”
Mercy sneered and eyed Lillian with a glimmer of amusement in her eye. “Is this her approach to everything?”
“I’m sure Lena will find out tomorrow.” Lex intoned dryly, and Kara half-choked on the oyster and brought a napkin to her lips as she turned a vivid shade of scarlet.
“Oh please, the only time any of you have been thankful at the table is when you’re trying to impress the Elders.” Lena snapped, softening her features when she glanced at Kara across the table. “You’re fine,” She insisted, and went so far as to slide her foot under the table to comfort the alpha. “Oysters are best eaten freshly served anyway.”
To prove her point, Lena picked up an oyster and held Kara’s gaze as she tipped her chip up to slurp the seafood down with a noise of enjoyment. It wasn’t until she wiped the juices from her lip with a finger and licked it clean that she noticed Kara’s hanging jaw and her mother’s intense glare.
“Lena I expect you to conduct yourself at a higher standard when we have guests.” Lillian bit out, her hand tight around the stem of a wine glass. “Save your other appetites for when your family isn’t present.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Lena replied with a touch of frost to her voice, and lifted a glass of water as she murmured, “Has the early onset dementia started?”
Lillian smiled coldly and took a great deal of pride in informing the whole table, “The foot you’re clumsily trying to caress belongs to me.”
Lena pulled her foot back so fast the whole table rattled from the force of it and she burned in humiliation when Mercy barked laughter.
Lex picked at some cheese and side-eyed Kara in that sly way of his before he supplied, “Perhaps your IQ is lowering to match your mate’s. I’ve heard it can happen.”
Lena was about to tell him to shut up when Kara surprised her with a slight but awkwardly loud laugh. Everyone at the table turned to observe her, and Lena watched curiously as Kara shrugged at the sudden attention and met her gaze.
“He’s funny,” Kara stated easily, as if she wasn’t at all offended, and couldn’t smell the hostility that came off Lena’s family in waves. “I suppose anyone who is bald by twenty-five needs a good sense of humor.”
Lena almost sputtered out her mouthful of water. She never expected Kara to have it in her to challenge any member of the Luthor family, let alone Lex, but the alpha seemed more at ease than ever.
“Balding is hereditary, much like your visual impairment and weak alpha demeanor,” Lex hissed in return, his face beginning to transform with the first signs of anger.
“Now, now, she can’t be all that weak, considering she tore apart her competition at the Mating Run.” Mercy noted in her velvety, smooth tone as she passed the cheese plate off to Kara again.
Kara helped herself to more cheese and crackers and leaned back in her chair with such bravado that it made Lena’s panties wet.
“I have no doubt she’ll be just as bold and brave when we partake in the Spring Festival tomorrow,” Lena announced and squared her chin in a stubborn lock as she waited for her mother to argue.
Lillian’s face reflected her displeasure and her nostrils flared as she smoothed her palm over the table. “Are you certain you want to participate?” She asked as she side-eyed Kara and then confided, “It’s a stark contrast to being shielded by darkness in a forest. You’ll be out in the open and on display to the other mated pairs who attend. ”
Before Lena could point out her mother’s hypocrisy in objecting to the Spring Festival, Kara handled it.
“I already purchased our tickets.” Kara shrugged and her body language showed how comfortable she was with declaring, “It would be seen as strange if we didn’t attend, don’t you think?”
“That depends on your intentions,” Lex cut in much more seriously and exuded his own alpha pheromones to knock Kara down a peg. “What do you plan to do after you attend this disgusting little breeding festival with my sister? I don’t think you’ve earned the right to contribute to the Luthor blood line just yet.”
“My intentions?” Kara repeated, and tipped her head to the side as she regarded Lex with narrowed eyes. The corners of her lips quirked into a barely contained smile and she unfurled her own protective and much more potent pheromones to smother his out. “The same as every other alpha who participates: I found my match and I intend to be with her. As for the right to continue my blood line with Lena, I earned that the night of the Mating Run.”
Lex seethed beside Kara and made no attempt to hide the way he bared his teeth and snarled at her quick and cavalier response.
Kara seized his momentary inability to speak and continued smartly. “I’m surprised you’d call the Spring Festival disgusting, Lex, considering your father was such an advocate for it. And you and your mother have such a rich history and reputation of upholding all the Luthor traditions. I thought you’d appreciate Lena following them.”
The smile on Kara’s face was the equivalent of a non-verbal checkmate, and she popped a cracker with a thick chunk of cheese into her mouth. Her face lit up as she chewed and she lifted another before Lex snagged the plate from her reach.
Lena could have kissed her alpha if Kara was within arm’s reach. The scent of her was borderline indecent from breathing in Kara’s pheromones and she scooted back from the table to prevent anyone from noticing.
“Let me get the next course,” She offered and gathered up the appetizer plates with a rosy blush on her cheeks.
The conversation over dinner was much more limited, though throughout the meal Kara kept finding ways to one-up Lex.
Lena could see her brother growing cross and that brought a feeling of dread to her stomach, but it didn’t match all of the excitement that was already fluttering there.
At some point, Mercy turned the talk to more particular matters of their relationship. “So do you intend to have children right away, or wait?” She asked, as mellow as always in her line of questioning, even though Lex instantly reacted like it was absurd to even discuss it.
“They aren’t ready for that,” Lex insisted and threw down his napkin with a smug sneer. “Lena is conducting cancer research out of her best friend’s garage, and as far as I know, Kara has no job prospects.”
Anger left blotchy red marks on Lena’s pale skin and she stabbed at her dessert with pointed aggression.
How dare he humiliate her at the table by suggesting they weren’t ready for children when a third of the newly mated pairs were already proudly announcing pregnancies? Lena wasn’t keeping score, but she did feel a pang of envy every time she saw pictures or read updates on how quickly some of the couples were moving, and she had yet to see Kara alone since the Mating Run.
Sadness drifted over Lena like a wet blanket, smothering her fire with a cold resignation, until Kara cleared her throat and set her fork down. “With respect, you don’t get to decide what we’re ready to do, and I have a job.” Lena met the alpha’s gaze with curiosity, and felt less upset when Kara reassured her with a smile. “Cat Grant personally chose me to be her assistant out of hundreds who wrote in for the job.”
Lillian laughed dramatically until everyone turned to stare at her and she raised her eyebrows mockingly at Kara and lifted her wine glass. “Oh you’re proud to be someone’s lackey. I thought you were joking. My mistake,” She uttered and sipped at her wine with a slow smirk.
“The mistake is all Lena’s for allowing someone so inferior to claim her in the first place.” Lex hissed, his hand so tight around the fork that it bent in his grip.
“Well, if you believe that, then you’re saying your precious traditions are faulty.” Lena snapped, all pretense of the meal demolished as she seethed across the table, “By that logic maybe Mercy made a mistake.” Her gaze flicked to Mercy to make it clear she thought the omega could do better than Lex, but her efforts to stop this nonsense only inflamed her brother's temper.
Lex slammed his palms on the table hard enough to make the plates rattle and stood so abruptly the chair screeched across the floor behind him. “I am the alpha of the house, and while you live here you will respect me!”
Kara was on her feet in an instant, ready to protect Lena from his wrath as she snarled, “Don’t speak to her like that.”
Lex scoffed in Kara’s face, not the least bit intimidated by her as he leaned into her face to grunt out, “She’s my sister—”
“And she’s my mate.” Kara fiercely stated while she stood her ground. “You have no right to try and keep us apart and she doesn’t have to live here, because I rented an apartment for us.” She turned towards Lena, her hard jaw and clenched fists loosening as she informed her, “I wanted to look at places with you, but you could never make it, so when I found one I thought you’d like, I didn’t hesitate.”
The tension bothered Lena and she froze up from all of the shouting. Her brows were drawn inward in a wince and she swallowed down the urge to cry. Kara’s presence was her only solace, despite how embarrassing it was that her mate had seen her brother scream at her.
“Lex, apologize to Lena,” Lillian demanded with impatience and flared her nostrils in rage. “You might be an alpha, but in this household I’m in charge.” It seemed to pain her mother to make concessions on Kara’s behalf and yet there was a glimmer of newfound respect in Lillian’s eyes as she raised them to stare at the alpha. “Perhaps I misjudged you, Kara. I assumed with your nearsightedness and your bumbling behavior that you couldn’t be much of an alpha, but it’s clear you’re stronger than you first appear.”
That was a borderline compliment coming from her mother and Lena stared at her in worry as she waited for a punchline, but instead Lillian walked off and poured expensive Scotch into a glass for Kara.
“I’m sorry,” Lex hissed from between his clenched teeth, and like all of his apologies, it lacked sincerity.
Lena raised one shoulder in a shrug for him and then followed her mother as Lillian led Kara off to the sitting room.
Part of her was suspicious and she hovered close beside Kara, in case her mother was planning to do something awful. She bumped into Kara’s back when the alpha came to a stop.
“You’ll have to forgive Lex. He’s burdened with living up to the legacy of his Father,” Lillian intoned, and waved Kara over to a seat, where she reluctantly sat down. The leather squeaked beneath her damp pants and it was only when Lillian turned on her heel to no doubt have another word with Lex that Lena saw the first glimpse of the shy, awkward alpha she had known over the years.
Kara hid her grimace behind the glass of Scotch as she shifted to get comfortable. She sniffed the amber liquid with interest before she sat it aside on the coffee table without so much as a sip. “I think that went well, don’t you?” She remarked after a moment, and Lena choked on a laugh as she hurried over to join her.
“I think it was one of the worst experiences of my life.” Lena deadpanned and reached out to entwine her fingers with Kara’s as she supplied in a whisper, “Don’t get me wrong. I knew they would hate you. I just didn’t think they’d be so quick to make it known.”
“I think the whole town knows they hate me,” Kara teased, as if she wasn’t at all bothered by that fact. “I survived my first Luthor family dinner. As far as I’m concerned, it was a success.”
“That sounds like something you’d find on a t-shirt,” Lena mused, only to laugh when Kara’s face lit up at the idea. “Why am I suddenly picturing you wearing one for every family event?”
“We could make a whole collection, even onesies that say I’m a little Luthor on them.” Kara grinned, infectious and warm as she leaned closer to Lena to murmur, “And Lex thinks I have no prospects. Wait until I start a Luthor clothing line.”
“Oh, you’ll deserve not only a t-shirt, but also medal if you can put up with them longer term.” Lena chuckled and soaked in the opportunity to cuddle on the couch with Kara until they were interrupted.
They finalized their plan for the spring festival, and then Lena hurried her alpha to the door before her mother or brother could take a cheap parting shot at Kara.
The next morning, Lena woke up before anyone else so she could sneak out an hour before she told her mother she would be leaving. She put on a short black sun dress with red and pink flowers on it. It might not have been her favorite outfit, but it had thin straps and did wonders for her cleavage.
Lena met up with Kara a full block away from the house and grinned when she noticed the alpha had brought her favorite coffee and bagels for breakfast.
