“You aren’t planning to leave now, are you?” Lena accused with bitterness and tried to swallow down a sob in her throat. “You can’t, Kara.” She pressed her palm against her stomach and gave it a small rub. “I think I’m pregnant. Do you understand? Barn. Eivi heill. Baby. Pregnant.”
“Pregnant.” Kara enunciated carefully, as if the word was fragile in her mouth, though her eyes lit up when Lena smoothed her palm in circles over her belly. “Pregnant.” She repeated with more enthusiasm, and knelt down to rub her face over the place that would soon swell with new life.
Lena hoped the knowledge would deter the alpha from leaving her side. She almost believed it when strong arms wrapped around her middle, then Kara garbled out broken words in Lena’s native tongue and she felt her heart sink.
“I bring you best riches from land and sea.” Kara expressed with joy, her bright smile doing little to quell the panic which beat within Lena’s chest like one of the war drums.
“I don’t want riches. I want you here with me.” Lena pleaded, grasping for the furs around Kara’s shoulders to try and impart her desires more firmly. “Do you hear me? You stay home. No raiding.”
“Raiding,” Kara repeated firmly, her brow creasing as she stood tall and proud. She clasped Lena’s hands and carefully loosened them from her attire and settled her hand over Lena’s stomach. “For family. I love you.”
All around them other warriors were gathering their weapons and supplies. Lena noticed that the wives of alphas were kissing their mates and sending them off with joy and the children were admiring them.
It was a culture she was struggling to come to grips with—that providing for one meant robbing another, and yet the strength and pride the alphas exuded was thrilling.
A smaller, dark-haired alpha that Lena knew to be Kara’s friend wandered over when it seemed that Kara was hesitating, and grabbed her by the arm.
“Kom.” Alecks stated, her curious eyes taking in Lena’s sadness. “You will see her soon when you have provided for our village, and she will know you are strong.”
Kara grunted in agreement, and kissed Lena as if trying to bestow all of her passion in that one act so it would keep her warm on the nights she was gone.
Lena’s bottom lip trembled and she stood aside to let Kara go with the foreboding feeling that she would never see the alpha again. She ran from the shore, glancing back just once to glimpse Kara’s misery.
In a rush, she flung open the door to their home and went on a little raid of her own: she pulled out a pair of the alpha’s trousers and a great big cloak that would cover her face. She dressed herself like one of the betas and omegas who handled the stock of food for the alphas during their longer travels.
It might have been impulsive and reckless, but she snuck onto one of the smaller skips as soon as dusk came.
There was one other omega already on the skip with a sweet face and she muttered a greeting at Lena’s arrival. The betas on board ignored her, except to tell Lena when they required food and how much of it to pass forward.
The tumultuous waves made her feel sick, but by first light she looked ahead and saw Kara on the ship in front of her. It calmed her, at least until the alpha took notice of her in return — then Kara spoke with Alecks and two more alphas, and a little while later the ships came up alongside one another.
With very little commotion, an exchange was made and one of the alphas stepped on board Lena’s smaller ship to trade places with her.
Lena went into Kara’s arms and lowered her eyes in guilt. “I was afraid I would never see you again. Please forgive me.”
Contrary to what she imagined would happen, Kara didn’t appear to be angry as she caught her by the chin to stare into her eyes. “Brave víf,” Kara murmured, as if awed by her audacity to join them. She half grinned, her hand settling on Lena’s stomach as she declared, “We have strong pregnant.”
“Child.” Lena corrected quickly, her voice wavering around the lump in her throat.
Kara nodded and turned to the rest of the alphas on the boat as she pulled Lena against her chest. “She is fierce like her mate!”
The alphas let out a roar in unison, as if it was customary for some of the wives to come aboard, though she doubted it severely. Lena wondered if perhaps it was simply because Kara was seen as one of the strongest among them that nobody dared take issue with it.
“Kom, we sit.” Kara encouraged, and steered her to one of the oars that she must have been rowing with the alpha that had traded places with Lena.
Lena perched beside Kara and drew her cloak a little tighter around her shoulders. She found herself watching the alpha’s eyes the way that the rest of the crew watched the ocean—for signs of danger or upset, but there was never any to be found in Kara’s soft glances.
“You aren’t angry with me?” She questioned and the alpha put out her arm for Lena to go to her.
“Neinn,” Kara insisted and reached out to rub her back in calming circles. “Ek sakna, Lena—I long for you.”
Lena shifted so that she could lean into Kara’s shoulder, and somehow Kara managed to use the oar while still holding her.
“You will stay with skip when we reach land,” Kara instructed and put her muscle into her work. “Does child—spyrni—does child fight with you?”
“You mean kick,” Lena realized with a quiet laugh and stroked a blonde curl behind Kara’s ear. “No, not yet, it’s too early for the baby to kick me – and also too early for it to fight with me. Hopefully that won’t happen often after the baby is born.”
Kara seemed content with that, though her hand strayed more than once from the oar to rest on Lena’s belly, perhaps hoping to feel it regardless. “We will have many.” Kara stated with pride, as if it had been foretold by the Gods. “Strong alphas.”
“What if it’s a beta or an omega?” Lena argued with a glare that warned of trouble if Kara favored an alpha over a beta or omega child.
The challenge in her tone rattled the alpha who, much to Lena’s amusement, appeared to comprehend the predicament she had just found herself in.
Kara’s eyes widened as she glanced at her, and for a few seconds her mouth tried to form words soundlessly before she finally blurted, “They will be fierce like you.”
“And loved, and valued, and protected.” Lena listed pointedly, her hands clasping the oar to help row as if to show she was made of strength and steel just like the sword Kara carried. She narrowed her eyes at her mate, and the panic that seemed to reflect in the depths of her alpha’s eyes when she thought she had upset her wife showed her exactly what resided in Kara’s heart.
“All for family.” Kara insisted with a thump to her chest, so serious that it left little doubt in Lena’s mind that the alpha would cherish their child, whatever it may be.
“I wish for many child with you, Lena.” The alpha asserted, and shifted to pull Lena closer as if the heat of her body would convince her of that. “Love all.” Kara murmured, her lips scant inches from brushing with Lena’s mouth. “Love you.” The alpha whispered, and captured Lena’s mouth in a searing, sensual kiss that brought heat to Lena’s cheeks.
She almost forgot they were on the sea and surrounded by other alphas due to Kara’s possessive and dominant scent. Lena reacted to it without thought and melted into her mate with sultry moan as her cunt clenched and her inner omega flourished to life in agreement. She may very well have found herself climbing onto Kara’s lap if the motion of the oar and rock of the boat hadn’t roused her from her desires.
Lena parted from the kiss with reluctance, drowsy with need that couldn’t be met in the longboat, and found herself forgiving her alpha for the blunder she had made.
“Well, if you want more children, you have to stay in one piece,” Lena announced as if these were terms she fully expected to be met. “I won’t have you getting injured,” She added petulantly when Kara raised her eyebrows.
“Then you kom,” The alpha said simply, her hand entwining with Lena’s while she vowed, “We sail together, keep each other warm and safe. Never apart.”
It sounded like a beautiful dream to travel the world with her alpha and not be left behind. Lena had longed for that kind of adventure when she had been a girl, and her heart swelled in her chest as Kara proposed it with such earnestness.
“Never apart.” Lena echoed, the words feeling like a promise she knew her alpha would keep.

I mean, she's better off with Kara in any reality than she is with Lex. 😊Yeah, they'd be speaking a pidgin and their kids would, too. It was interesting to explore writing in Old Norse for this, lol. I included some real Viking customs, like Kara putting her blade in the support beam in the house. That was a tradition after marriage - though they didn't get married in this so much as mate.
