Disobedience and Devotion - Chapter 7

On the day of the hunt, Lena rose early and went to the kitchens to oversee the preparations of the delicate finger sandwiches and cakes. Her presence wasn’t so much needed as it was a way to show Kara that she cared and wanted to make the effort to entertain their guests. She lingered around observing the cooks until she felt sick and hurried away just in time to vomit into one of the plant pots kept in her own parlor.
It seemed to be an effect of the little tincture Kara bought her to extend her heat. Lena had needed to stop taking it because she experienced so much nausea in the mornings that she decided the ill turn wasn’t worth the pleasure. Much to her frustration, the sickness stayed with her for days, though in the evenings she was well and just as desirous of Kara’s touch as she had been before. It had bonded her to Kara and she no longer slept in her own room at all, because she preferred the alpha’s bed.
“Are you sick again?” Nia asked as she entered the parlor to find Lena still crouched beside the plant. The color must have gone from her face, because Nia reached into an apron pocket and brought out smelling salts to hold under her nose.
“I’m fine, Nia, just the usual stomach upset,” Lena uttered and ran her hands down the front of her gown, lest she had gotten any bit of sickness on her fine party clothes.
Her dress for the occasion was royal blue with embroidery over the breast and long sleeves with pretty frills. She had pinned a few of her dark curls, but the rest were left to tumble free, right in range when she fell into her next bout of vomiting. Fortunately Nia swept back her hair and then Kara came into the parlor. The alpha’s scent was better than the salts for calming her nausea.
“I see your sickness has yet to pass,” Kara intoned, the heavy frown of her brow enough to show concern. She strode over to take Nia’s place with a careful, steady hand, and twirled Lena’s curls out of the way as she instructed, “Fetch some water and a tonic to settle her stomach.”
Nia hovered by the alpha’s side, her gentle eyes darting between them. Lena thought she looked ready to say something, but Kara hurried her along with a rumble, “Quick now, before the guests arrive.”
The girl scurried off without a word and Lena sagged into Kara’s strong arms to inhale the rich aroma of her scent. “If I should ever request that tincture to extend my heat again, I trust that you’ll remind me of this prolonged illness.”
Kara didn’t express her worry in the same way Lena may have, and opted instead for huffing out a breath before muttering, “I won’t have you stay here alone while feeling so poorly.”
Lena knew what that meant without the alpha elaborating, and clutched Kara’s forearm to squeeze in reassurance. “Hush now, I’m fine, and you mustn’t miss the hunt or there would be talk as to why. None of the others would think twice of staying behind over such insignificance.”
Alphas often considered such things trivial when it came to their mates, and Lena experienced a surge of gratitude that Kara wasn’t the kind to ignore her ailments. She straightened after a moment to ease the palpable worry that came off of her alpha, and Kara wiped at her mouth with a fine handkerchief.
She could see distress in the way Kara’s lips pressed into thin white lines, and wondered how her alpha managed all these years without anyone seeing the sensitive soul that resided under the façade of Clark. Even she had been fool to the persona, but now that she knew Kara for who she was, she glimpsed the real alpha between the cracks before her stoic mask solidified in place.
“I believe Mr. and Mrs. Khan have arrived, and there are a few others approaching,” Nia informed them in a rush, handing over the small vial first and then the tall glass of water.
Lena glugged the liquid in one gulp and washed it over with sips of water. The taste was worse than the acidic bile, though she kept that to herself as Kara observed her silently.
Even more nauseating was the thought that Mr. Khan would be accompanying Kara on the hunting trip, and no doubt many more alphas that despised Lena for her outspokenness.
She had little notion of just how much Kara’s absence would affect her, and yet she soon learned as Kara went out to greet their guests. Lena’s scent was pitiable, desperate for her alpha – and as everyone filled their front hall, she could smell the stench of the other alphas who reeked of praise and respect for Kara.
Among the hunting party was Michael Matthews, Maxwell Lord, Phil Baker, Morgan Edge, John Corben, James Olsen and several others Lena knew too well. She noticed the intrigue in their eyes at once, and how much they all admired Clark for his ability to bring Lena to heel. Their wives were quiet and lined up behind them, all in pretty gowns fitting omegas of their status.
“We have just the right weather for a hunt,” Phil Baker cheerfully remarked and gripped the front of his riding coat that seemed to be a bit snug on him. “Clark, where shall we begin today?”
“I have high hopes for the forest to the west of our town. The deer have been roaming through the thicket at night.” Clark intoned, fastening his jacket with quick fingers. He looked smart in his hunting attire, exuding strong and confident energy that held everyone’s attention.
Lena noticed the other omegas taking in the dapper coat and the clean shaven jaw of her alpha, and bristled with a petty jut of her chin. She knew better than to cause a scene, and tucked herself behind Kara to lightly stroke her fingers over the jacket, seeking comfort in the musk of her scent. She tried to pull as much of it as possible into her lungs before she was left alone.
Perhaps her pathetic scent alerted Kara to her desperation, because she pulled a clean handkerchief from her pocket and lightly pressed it to her own throat for a second as the alphas all agreed on how to proceed with their hunt.
Kara passed the fabric discreetly to Lena so she had a token of her scent to appease her senses, and Lena clutched it so fiercely she worried she would tear it in two. She missed the conversations that went on around her, so wrapped up in her own panic that by the time she snapped out of it, the alphas were ready to leave.
“Nia, please escort our guests to the parlor,” Clark asserted with a sweep of his hand, then turned to Lena to murmur privately, “We’ll return before dusk. If you require anything at all, Nia will be by your side at all times.”
Kara may not have said it, but Lena could tell by the hopeful spark in her eyes that she hoped she would enjoy the company of the other omegas. It baffled her, just a tad, that the alpha wished her to have friends, and so she smiled if only to placate her husband.
“Be safe on your hunt.” Lena whispered, fearful to say more, lest the other alphas hear her, but Kara nodded all the same, and then turned to bellow for Winn to hurry up. Evidently he would be joining them, and the house would be left to Nia’s care.
“This way, M’lady, we can’t have your guests waiting,” Nia murmured, and took her by the arm to guide her down to the large parlor where the tables were filled with pots of tea and all the delights of the kitchen. The change of scent was what hit her first, even as her eyes traveled over all of the omegas sitting primly in chairs. Their perfume was delicate and sweet, like flowers in a meadow, without an ounce of hostility or aggression.
They all looked to her in silence, wide eyed and curious, and Nia cleared her throat and gave Lena the gentlest push to send her forward a step. She was the lady of the house, and with Clark gone, Lena realized they were expecting her to take the lead.
How odd to be thrust into a position of power when, for the majority of her life, she had been reminded she held none.
“Good morning, ladies,” Lena uttered, her smile tentative as she slipped into a chair and signaled for Nia to do the same. “Please, help yourselves. There’s plenty more in the kitchen.”
For a precarious second, nobody moved, and Lena held her breath as she waited for their scrutiny. It never came, and then someone laughed, and suddenly Mr. Edge’s wife was reaching out to take her hand and squeezing it with affection.
“I remember my first luncheon. I imagined it would be dreadful.” She explained with a kind smile that Lena found heartening. “I fretted for days, and when it arrived I was stiff as a board and fearful of my own tongue. Our husbands may be inclined to play politics and are swift to keep us in line, but we’re not so fast in the company of each other. Are we?” She asked the others, who all let out a laugh.
Much to Lena’s surprise, some loosened their dresses and others toed off their shoes to get comfortable. She must have looked a sight, because the woman gave her hand a gentle pat and then informed her, “I’m Samantha, but everyone here calls me Sam when the alphas are away.”
One by one they all introduced themselves, and Lena gaped at Nia, who seemed to be enjoying her reaction. The grin she wore was barely hidden behind the porcelain tea cup she held.
“I know your names – I know all of your names,” Lena intimated with a soft squint at the curious gathering of ladies, who all appeared relaxed and friendly without their mates at their sides. “I’ve just never been able to address you formally, on account of my being a public nuisance.”
She recognized Lucy, Mr. Olsen’s wife, from a circle of young ladies that her mother forced her to join before she became a social outcast.
Mr. Baker’s wife, Jess, often held parties at their home, a few of which Lena had attended prior to her escape into the forest. A few of the others came from families whose history entwined with the Luthor’s, including Andrea Khan and Siobhan Corben.
“We don’t consider you a nuisance.” The omega who spoke was the only one Lena had never met, and she introduced herself with a small curtsy. “Imra Matthews. My husband is Michael.”
Lena wanted to pose a great number of questions to them all, but her nausea returned and she scarcely had the time to spin away before she dry heaved.
Humiliation came over her and her face might have burnt from it, if not for how pale and faint she was from sickness. She reached for Kara’s handkerchief and pressed it over her nose to inhale her alpha’s scent. The relief it caused was positively instantaneous, and she folded the soft fabric carefully as she avoided their concerned eyes.
“Forgive me, I’ve been under the weather the past few mornings.” Lena lilted by way of explanation. She sensed a curiosity rising in the atmosphere and tried to dash it with a wave of her hand. “Please, eat, I find myself peckish, so there’s no need to be shy.”
She picked up a saucer and added a scone, along with a few finger sandwiches, but avoided the little custard tarts because the texture left her gagging lately. Lena nibbled on the dainty sandwiches until hunger overtook her and she ate a few more without thinking, then washed them over with tea.
“And are you often only sick in the morning, or do you feel ill in the evenings, as well?” Eve Lord asked her with a suspicious narrowing of her eyes.
“Oh, it’s nothing, and I’m certain it will pass soon,” Lena supplied with a small, dismissive wave of her hand. “I believe I ate something that disagreed with me earlier.”
The last thing she wanted was to send the women running with fear of contracting some terrible illness. Kara would be awfully disappointed and their husbands would likely never let them interact with her again. Lena most certainly couldn’t tell them that she had taken a tincture to prolong her heat.
Andrea shared a look with Eve, and then raised a plate of oatcakes and pâté spread towards Lena. Just the smell alone made her gag and she covered her mouth as she shook her head, ”No, no I’m quite happy with my scone, thank you.”
Nia placed a comforting hand on her arm, and Lena released a slow breath and managed a smile. “It seems despite all the times I’ve been the center of attention for causing a ruckus, I’m unaccustomed to being a host.”
“You needn’t worry about entertaining us. We use these events as an excuse for mischief, and we hope you’ll join in,” Sam remarked with a scrunch of her nose and smiled at the group.
“Mischief?” Lena questioned, her gaze darting over the smirks and grins on the omegas’ faces. “And here I was worried I’d have to be on my best behavior all afternoon.”
“Hardly,” Jess laughed, her hand stilling in the air with her pinky up as she barely avoided spilling tea. “Who else can we complain about our husbands to, if not each other?”
“What sort of complaints do you make?” Lena asked, although she knew firsthand enough reasons for any omega to find fault with an alpha.
Eve pulled two little vials from her pocket, one that contained a red liquid that reminded Lena of a cordial. “This is a gift we give all new wives,” She explained and passed it into Lena’s hands.
“I put a few drops of this into my husband’s ale every night,” Sam admitted and selected an iced cake from the plate in front of her. “It knocks him out. It’s very useful when he’s in rut.”
Lena inhaled a sip of tea and Nia was kind enough to take the cup from her when she sputtered and gasped. Startled laughter died on her lips as she pressed her fingers to her mouth and stared at the women she clearly had misjudged as timid little things who were unable to fend for themselves. It was a strange moment, whereby she felt her own bias challenged. In a way, she was hardly different to the alphas with all their assumptions regarding omegas, and Lena blinked in surprise when that occurred to her.
“I was every bit as shocked as you were when I was welcomed into the fold.” Lucy supplied with a smile, and several others laughed in agreement. “We look out for one another, Lena. We may not hold social status or autonomy, but we possess far more cunning than our husbands would be inclined to acknowledge.”
Lena’s eyes widened as she turned in question to glance at Nia, who still looked amused. She had the mind to pull the girl aside and demand how long she had been privy to this knowledge about the other omegas in town.
“The alphas live under a great lie,” Jess intoned with a sigh. “How meek we are in their eyes.”
“It serves them to perceive us that way,” Sam insisted as she lifted a scone and spooned jam and cream upon it. “And their egos serve us in return by allowing us the benefit of the doubt, because we’re simply too helpless to ever be a threat to them.”
“I’d rather be clever than strong. Muscles weaken over time, but the mind? Why, it stays as sharp as a blade,” Andrea murmured with a private smile that drew attention from the group. She seemed to realize belatedly that she had implied too much and attempted to wave it away with the back of her hand.
“Do I detect a hint of bitterness in your tone, Andrea?” Sam asked with a sly smile.
Lena found herself leaning forward in her seat, her eyes fixed on her old friend, who seemed hell bent on avoiding scrutiny by picking apart the pastry of a jam tart.
“I’ve been unable to purchase the remedy you suggested last we met, as my husband is a fool and is under the impression that I would jeopardize myself in pursuit of an affair if I left the house without him,” Andrea fumed under her breath. “Little does he know I merely want to venture into town to fetch a cure for him from the Apothecary.”
“Is he ill?” Lena asked with a confused crinkle of her brow, and Eve immediately exhaled, “You could say he’s gone downhill for months,” then roared with laughter until Andrea pinched her quite sorely on the arm.
“The last time he went into a rut was so long ago I’ve forgotten what it feels like,” Andrea confessed, her cheeks brightening as she revealed her secret. “My own heat fails to make him rise to the occasion and he grows more furious with each passing day.”
Sam reached out to offer comfort and Jess fetched Andrea a cup of tea to help wash away the shame she felt. It was a strange scent on the omega, and Lena pinched her brows together upon detecting it.
“Perhaps I can have a word with Clark to invite his sister round for dinner,” Lena suggested. “I’m sure I can persuade her to drop off a tonic to your home, so your husband would be none the wiser.”
Andrea appeared stunned, and faltered as she glanced around the group for guidance. “You mustn’t tell Clark what it’s about. If my husband found out I’d told anyone of his problem—”
“I won’t breathe a word of it to my husband,” Lena assured them, confident in the fact that she wasn’t telling a lie because Kara was not a man. “We must look after each other.” She repeated firmly, unsure why she felt the need to prove herself by getting involved in the matter, but it seemed to secure her place in the group as everyone smiled her way.
“Morgan likes to think of himself as an alpha first and a man second,” Sam confided, moving the conversation along, so as not to leave Andrea as the only one feeling exposed. “He’s quick to anger and heavy handed in our mating to assert himself, yet he craves affection whenever he’s finished.”
Sam waited until everyone was staring at her before disclosing in a hush, “My husband likes to be held against my breast while I stroke his hair, and becomes huffy and insecure if I do not kiss him.”
“He doesn’t,” Eve whispered, and Jess put out a hand to contain her before she fell off her chair in excitement.
“He does,” Sam grinned, her eyes flicking to Lena before she continued. “I wouldn’t dare go more than a few days. You know how fragile and unpredictable an alpha’s ego can be.”
“I’d quite like to be kissed after mating. I may prefer it, truth be told.” Imra lamented, and the group fell silent to let her speak of her grievances. “Michael has the unfortunate tendency to finish almost as soon as he starts, and then I must lay there and wait as he falls asleep. I hear him boast often of his size, but between us, should I move once he’s done, he slips right out. I’ve found bigger knots in my needlework.”
Lena slapped her hand across her mouth to keep her mirth at bay, and witnessed the others do the same. She may never be able to look at any of the alphas again without hearing the voices of their wives ringing in her ears. No wonder they were all so ghastly in town, they all had failings they wished to erase with their image.
“Maxwell certainly has the stamina, but his performance often feels like it’s for himself,” Eve explained without any hint of shame as she sipped her tea. “Perhaps it’s wrong, but I don’t mind. I’m far better equipped for relieving my own itches than he is, and I often do once he’s exhausted himself. On the nights I’d prefer to be alone, I just add a drop of sleeping tonic to his drink and take care of my own needs.”
A soft murmur of agreement went through the group until Jess spoke up. “There will be a day when you wish your alpha was still half the man he used to be, and you’ll rue all those times you used that little sleeping tonic.”
“Are we to believe Mr. Baker is underperforming his husbandly duties?” Siobhan questioned with a raise of her brows. She steepled her fingers as if privately delighted and tried not to smirk as Jess slumped in her chair.
“You know fine well that he is,” Jess noted, then caught Lena watching her with interest. “Nothing burns quite like the humiliation of your alpha falling asleep while you’re beneath him in heat. The only thing stiff was his joints.”
Those remarks earned a chuckle from the women and brought a dim smile to Lena’s lips — not because she liked to hear the sufferings of another omega, but because it amused her to know the shortcomings of every alpha she hated.
“And how are you faring in your marriage, Lena?” Eve asked in a soft, melodic voice of concern.
Lena lifted the handkerchief with Kara’s scent on it and then raised her teacup as she made an honest announcement. “The reason I’m unwell today is because I took a tincture to prolong my heat. The gossip your men speak about me is true. I confess I like my alpha, and most of all when we are in bed together.”
“We had high hopes that Clark Danvers would be a talented lover,” Sam confided, and all of the omegas appeared to be much more attentive now that Clark was the topic of discussion.
“It might be inappropriate to say as much, but we’ve all fantasized about your alpha,” Andrea divulged with a wistful sigh and then patted at her neck with a handkerchief of her own. “Please, share as many details as you like. Our lives are wretched and I, for one, would love nothing more than to vicariously experience yours.”
It was one thing to garner attention with wild antics, and another to be stared at with deep longing to share such intimate details of her life.
Lena shifted uncomfortably on the couch as she considered the request, and glanced at Nia, who avidly avoided her gaze. Of course the girl wouldn’t speak out against her. It would be seen as a slight against the lady of the house and their guests may very well gossip about it in private. Lena wished she could ask for her council, but to leave would look suspicious.
“Yes, please do entertain us with tales of your passion,” Jess implored with a hopeful smile that did little to hide the sadness that resided in her eyes. “I fear I may never experience any of my own.”
It would be scandalous to disclose such intimacies, yet each of the omegas made sure to share something private of her own. Lena couldn’t very well deny them now—especially when, in contrast to their own mates, it would only serve to prop up Kara’s public image as the best alpha of the bunch.
Lena felt heat blossom across her cheeks as she set her teacup down and clasped the handkerchief close to her breast.
“I confide in you all with the understanding that it goes no further than this room,” Lena stated slowly, meeting the eyes of each woman before she reclined in her seat and caught her lip between her teeth. Nia appeared tense beside her, no doubt filled with dread at what she was about to confess, yet the beta remained silent and Lena exhaled a soft breath.
“As you may know, my husband is very meticulous. Clark takes great pride in all that he does, especially when handling me.” Lena felt exposed uttering just that, her face flushed as she listened to the expectant ripple of the group. There were notes of excitement drifting in the air, delicate and ephemeral as the omegas listened. Lena cleared her throat and sought to avoid drawing any questions by continuing.
“I will not go into great detail, but I will say Clark is a man of many talents, and he has shown me pleasures which I’d never even read about, let alone dreamed,” Lena whispered, afraid of saying too much. She felt peculiar in swapping such secrets, both worried about the trouble it might cause, and oddly pleased because she was speaking about her alpha.
Lena raised her chin to prevent anyone from believing she was ashamed and declared boldly, “He can do such wonderful things with just the touch of his thumb, and he bestows kisses in places that would be indecent in public. Clark isn’t one to boast. He much prefers his actions speak for themselves, but I dare say his ego is not nearly as big as other parts of him. To those who find their husbands are lacking between the legs, perhaps you can encourage them to use other means in satisfying your needs.”
Her advice seemed to enliven all of the omegas to plot ways of reforming their alphas in the bedroom. Lena wondered if somehow her desire to help would go awry — if any of the alphas would suspect her of being the one who encouraged their wives. After making so many promises to Kara, Lena knew better than to meddle for the sake of causing trouble. She just had to trust the omegas not to betray her, since they would all be to blame if any alpha found them out.
The morning and afternoon went by, and Lena warmed to the omegas as they talked of their interests. Every so often, she clutched her handkerchief close and thought of Kara. Just when she was hoping to see the alpha most, she heard the sound of the horses and looked out at the window to see the hunting party returning.
Mr. Baker held a pheasant and a few other alphas were toting smaller game like rabbits or ducks, but Kara lifted an entire stag from a sled that she had made of tree branches and twine.
The omegas went out to meet their husbands and Lena hurried towards Kara, who was giving the kitchen staff instructions on how to share portions of the venison.
Respect was tangible in the air, and wafted from the other alphas, as well as the omegas, who watched Kara pass off the large beast to Winn and three of the beta women that worked the kitchen. It was a remarkable sight that showed the strength of her alpha, and Lena swooned from a rush of desire.
Nia was quick to catch her, and to Lena’s surprise, Sam looped her arm through hers to keep her steady.
“Careful, M’lady,” Nia whispered in a soft hush, unheard by the others.
Lena squinted at her, at the heat in Nia’s cheeks and the way she avoided her eyes, as if she was hiding something. “A scraped knee would hardly be the talk of the town.” She pressed quietly, certain the beta girl wanted to say more.
Sam chuckled by her side and clasped her hand with the kind of familiarity Lena had only witnessed between good friends. It was a strange thing, and though Lena found comfort in the act, part of her wished to recoil from it.
“I trust it’s not your knees she is worried about,” Sam confided, though she was smart enough to keep her gaze on her husband as he held up several pheasants with pride. She smiled at him, and, for a fraction of a second, there was warmth in his gaze before arrogance took over and he turned to the other alphas.
“You care for him,” Lena noted, aghast that someone so vile could win a place within Sam’s heart.
“Morgan might not be the nicest alpha, but he’s certainly not the worst.” Sam admitted, her tone kind and not the least bit offended. “Believe me, I didn’t think I’d be capable of finding a single thing to like about him, but things can change when you have a child.”
Lena balked at the suggestion, unnerved by the meaningful way Sam glanced at her, and for a moment she felt Nia stiffen at her side. She swelled with emotion, unsure and startled by the implications, and found herself repeating dumbly, “Not my knees…”
Sam gave her hand a gentle squeeze, and then stepped aside as Clark strode over with intense, dark eyes and caught Lena by the chin. To anyone looking it would have seemed a standard display of dominance, but there was affection in the light caress of Clark’s thumb along her jaw as he rumbled, “How are you faring?”
With so many people close by, Lena didn’t dare breathe a word of what she suspected. It took effort, yet she managed to lock away the strange excitement that fluttered in her chest, her ribs now bars that caged hummingbirds made of emotion.
“Better, now that you’re here.” Lena rasped honestly, and the briefest flicker of light sparked in Clark’s eyes—a private flame of adoration that burned only for her.
“Back before dusk.” Clark reminded her fondly, and dropped his hand to secure it around her waist instead. Displays of such affection were typically reserved or seen as weakness, and Lena faltered as the solidness of her alpha pressed against her side. She must have smelled of panic, because Clark released a fresh, potent wave of pheromones and Lena swayed as they calmed her immediately.
It was then that Lena witnessed each alpha pull their omega closer, and she was shocked to see them in such good spirits. Even Mr. Baker, with his small pheasant, appeared to be cheerful, and Jess clasped his hand as if pleased with him.
“When they’ve proven themselves as powerful, they feel more at ease to acknowledge the other sides of themselves,” Clark murmured under his breath. The earthy musk and sharpness of sweat mingled with the natural spice of the alpha’s scent. Lena inhaled it deeply and desperately as her inner omega pined for more contact.
Clark engaged in conversation while they waited for the kitchen staff to butcher the stag, and served ale to keep everyone merry. The kitchen staff gave each of the alphas a large chunk of fresh venison to take away with them, to keep everyone well fed for the rest of the week. Good will spilled forth, and the alphas appeared kinder in their handling of their wives as they laughed and helped them into the respective carriages.
The moment the last one was out of sight, Kara turned to her with alarming speed and backed Lena into the door. The alpha kissed her and dared to fondle Lena over her dress. “I have the kitchen preparing our meal, but I confess I’d much rather sate my appetites between your thighs.”
It flustered and excited Lena, and a rosy blush came to her face as she considered sharing her news without delay. She slipped her hands under Kara’s overcoat and leaned in while staring up into the alpha’s attentive blue eyes. Her fingertips followed the path of Kara’s buttons, and she thought of pleading to forego dinner and retire to bed early.
“Can’t we take our meals in the bedroom tonight and tomorrow, just as we did while I was in heat?” Lena asked with persuasive, soft touches under Kara’s coat, and a suggestive arch of her eyebrow.
“Tomorrow?” Kara’s voice expressed doubt, and Lena stood closer to palm at the rising fabric between her legs, at the erection that she hoped would make up the alpha’s mind.
“We did discuss a compromise for participating in your hunt,” Lena crooned with a self-satisfied grin as she tried to influence Kara’s schedule for the week. “My heat may be waning, but I still wish you to stay home for at least a day to celebrate—”
