Lena whipped out one of Lex’s transmatter portal watches and grabbed the phone from Kara. “Alex, tell me the location,” she demanded and typed in the coordinates to a rocky hiking trail about thirty miles outside of National City.
The portal opened up in her living room and Lena gestured for Kara to go first.
They stepped through to find themselves under a starry sky with redwood trees all around and a smog of smoke.
Lena should have been prepared for anything when she felt a ripple in the air around her, but the sudden explosion took her by surprise and threw her forward.
The target of the strike was Kara, and as Lena crumpled into the dirt, she saw her best friend fall over the side of the hilly ridge.
“Kara!” Lena shouted in desperation and then looked up and into the dark eyes of their masked enemy. She had just enough time to reach for a heavy rock and hurl it as his face before Kara swept her up.

“Stay here,” Kara instructed her, and placed Lena safely away from the smoldering crater the blast had caused.
She would have protested, but Kara was already rushing at the masked man, who appeared more agile than Lena first thought. He was on his feet before Kara reached him and he threw a punch that Kara expected to take in stride. The force of it sent her flying back, and he strode forward with the kind of arrogance Lena was sick of seeing in men.
“Kara, look out,” Lena yelled, already stumbling closer on her utterly impractical heels. She almost twisted an ankle in her hurry to grab up a stick, and she stuck the tip of it into a pile of leaves that was still on fire and then swung it at their attacker. “Come on then,” she snarled, completely missing the fact that Kara was standing next to her and didn’t need her protecting.
A sharp exhale of frost breath snuffed out the flame on her stick and she glanced at Kara incredulously.
“Fire hazard,” Kara reasoned under her breath, and then launched herself forward to slam her fist against the guy’s jaw.
They moved with inhuman speed, with Kara landing just as many punches as she deflected. Twice their masked enemy managed to get the upper hand by playing dirty and setting his sights on Lena instead. Terror didn’t begin to explain the feeling Lena experienced when the man hurled a rock bigger than her fist straight at her head. In her panic she just stood there, frozen, and then it exploded into dust as Kara grabbed it inches from her face with a grip so strong she disintegrated it.
The roar that Kara let out shook the trees, but it was the force of her clap that sent shockwaves through the redwoods and knocked the man back. The sound of snapping echoed around them, and thick branches began to fall from the sky, unfortunate casualties of Kara’s anger as she stalked through the forest after the man.
Lena ducked and hid as best she could with splinters of wood and leaves cascading down around her. She was just about to shout for Kara when the Super was suddenly by her side with her cape raised over Lena’s head.
“I lost him,” Kara confessed, and Lena knew from the tension of Kara’s face that she was berating herself for letting him get away.
“It’s okay,” Lena insisted, her hand trembling as she pointed toward a peculiar looking device carved with strange symbols. “You found something else.”
The device glowed faintly in the dirt and Lena’s curiosity got the better of her. She moved towards it in fascination and glanced at Kara. “Do you know what this is?”
“No, but I’m guessing it could be powerful.” Kara warned as they both crouched down to squint at it. “It’s definitely alien tech, though I don’t recognize the markings.”
“Maybe it’s in his own language.” Lena considered, her fingers inching closer as though she were drawn towards it. “We should take it so we can study it. Whatever it is, it’s better in our hands than in his, especially if it’s dangerous.”
“Yeah, Alex would kill me if I left it.” Kara mumbled, just as distracted as Lena by the mysterious device.
The soft glow that emanated from the metal was enthralling, and they both reached for it at the same time. A surge went through the alien technology, and the light brightened as a sharp pain sizzled through Lena’s fingers. Kara hissed at the same time, and they quickly pulled their hands back.
“Fuck, did you feel that? It was like needles in my fingertips.” Lena winced, shaking her hand out as Kara used her cape to wrap up the strange device.
“We should get this back to Alex. She’ll want to take a look at it.” Kara suggested, and held her arm out to Lena so she could pull her close for flight.
Lena had no desire to take a portal, not when flying meant having Kara’s arms around her. She nestled her face into Kara’s cheek and braced the nape of her neck.
As she watched the city whirl by in a blur of light and color, she began to think about how close she had come to kissing Kara, and how much she wanted an excuse to be alone together again.

“It’s clearly a weapon of some kind,” Alex commented and glanced up at Kara with a furrow between her eyebrows. “I’m guessing the masked pyromaniac dropped this? That’s what J’onn is calling our mystery alien. Have you seen him, by the way?”
Before Kara could explain that she hadn’t, J’onn flew in behind them and collapsed onto his knees. “I’m fine,” he panted as Alex bent down to him and offered a supportive hand.

Lena scrunched her brow and tried to evade his curiosity by retrieving a containment box and gingerly helping Kara to transfer the Naltorian device into it. “I’ve got this, Brainy,” she insisted and nodded in the direction of a room that had recently become her work space.
Since his near death experience, Brainy had become oddly perceptive and in tune with human emotion, and Lena felt his calculating eyes trailing her.
“The device zapped me and Lena,” Kara explained and lifted her hand as if to show where it had left a mark, only there was nothing to see. “It hurt, but I guess it could have been much worse if this thing really is a weapon.”
With both hands on her hips, Kara stood and angled herself towards Lena, then took several strides to follow her while the rest of the Super friends spoke to J’onn.
“You’re not going to stay here all night and work on that, right?” Kara asked with a not-so-subtle tilt of her head and a faint blush on her face. “I know it’s important, but we ordered so much take-out, and I just don’t see you finishing it all on your own.”
“Nonsense, I can be quite ravenous after a fight,” Lena quipped with a jut of her chin and a slow smile. “You should have seen the amount chocolate I consumed every time that we argued last year.”
“It’s a good thing all of that is in the past, then. I appreciate that your pantry is always so well stocked with snacks, especially chocolate.” Kara swung her head around to glance back at Alex, all while making strangely self-conscious hand gestures. “Speaking of snacks…” She cleared her throat and took another step forward, bursting into nervous laughter when she halted in front of Lena’s work table.
