As Kara shot off to handle the city’s latest crisis, Lena flew into action of her own. She slipped on a silky robe and stalked through her penthouse with a determined pout on her face.
After so many sessions in therapy, Lena figured that nothing like this would happen again and Kara would respect her promise to always keep her informed. It was a blow to realize that they still needed to work on communication, but at least this time Lena was more open and very willing to express herself.
Lifting her tablet, Lena performed a fast protocol to hack into Supergirl’s comms. It took all of a few key strikes to input the security system overrides, and then she was able to shout, “Kara Zor-El, you promised there would be no more keeping me in the dark! You rushed off without even telling me what kind of danger you’d be facing!”
“Argh!” Kara grunted, as if the sound was capable of deafening her.
For a few precarious seconds, all Lena could hear was the scuffle happening far off on the other side of the city.
“Lena, I didn’t have time—to explain—“ Kara grunted out, sounding a lot like she was in close range combat with someone, and just barely fending them off.
It made Lena anxious and jumpy as her worry manifested as anger. “You could have taken two seconds!” She shouted, growing all the more panicked when she received a stream of grunts instead of coherent answers. “Keeping things from me is just as bad as lying, Kara! We said we weren’t going to do that anymore!”
“Lena, please try to remain calm,” Brainy interrupted. His soft, reassuring monotone came through clearly, and for the first time it occurred to Lena that everyone with access to Supergirl’s comms would be able to overhear their argument. “Let’s try some breathing exercises,” he proposed, “or better yet... why not make use of your little boxes?”
“Oh, I’ll shove you into a little box,” Lena warned, her tongue impulsive, despite her soft spot for Brainy. She figured that plenty of other people were listening in, including Alex and Kara’s usual team of back-up, but that wasn’t going to stop her from speaking her mind. After so many months of boxing up her resentments, she had run out of emotional storage space and her pregnancy hormones were doing her no favors.
“I’ll tell you about it the second I get home!” Kara shouted, much less winded this time, like she had gotten away from her assailants.
“And what if you don’t come home, and I have no idea where to even look for you?“ Lena snapped. It might have been an irrational fear, given that Kara’s signal could easily be tracked, but Kara had almost died so many times in the past and Lena had never known about it. Her voice broke as she admitted to her worst fears, and then she felt something else break—a strange and very subtle pop that left her lap peculiarly soaked.
Lena ran her fingers through the fluid in confused shock. She sat in complete silence for so long that she missed whatever reassurance Kara offered her. All she caught was, “I promise you, Lena. I’ll be home soon—“
For all of Lena’s usual speed with problem solving, it took her genius brain an inordinately long time to figure out that she was in labor.
She stood up to pace by the window, and then finally informed Kara, “Well, I certainly hope so, because I’m about to give very premature birth to an alien baby, and we’ve only gone to a handful of La Maze classes. I swear on every hair on your Kryptonian blonde head that if you’re not back by the time I have to push, you won’t need to worry about the next city crisis—“
Lena punctuated her rant with a soft cry of pain as she experienced a contraction. The feeling hadn’t been quite as noticeable before. She had blamed the slight twinges she experienced on eating one too many cupcakes with sickly sweet frosting, but this time it felt like the worst kind of cramp.
“Wait, Lena, oh my god, are you serious, you’re in labor?” Alex asked in lieu of the response Lena hoped she would receive from Kara.
“So serious, so fucking serious, Alex,” Lena cursed, unable to hold it back when she considered all of the gruesome possibilities that went with an alien birth, and all of the gruesome certainties that went with regular human labor.
It was already like a mini earthquake inside of her, a shifting internal tectonics that made her resent Kara for sticking it in her and knotting months ago.
It filled her with even more rage when Kara popped up with, “Whew, these guys hit pretty hard. What was all of that? I missed it.”
Instead of giving a coherent response, Lena just screamed from the pain of the contraction.
It must have confused the hell out of Kara, because the alpha blurted, “Lena? What’s wrong? I’m sorry, I really am —“
“She’s going into premature labor,” Alex announced while on the move. It seemed like she might have said more if Kara hadn’t interrupted with, “What?! But how could that be happening? We just started La Maze, and sure, the instructor hates me, but we still have twelve sessions left to go. I was planning to win her over with one of those fruit bouquets—”
“Kara,” Lena and Alex both shouted, one hysterical, and the other firm in stopping her sister from rambling.
“I called J’onn and Lillian and they’re both coming to help, so you can hurry up and meet me at Lena’s,” Alex sternly explained and the sound of a car engine starting meant that she was already on her way.
“You’ve invited my mother along?” Lena asked with a horrified laugh that relieved a bit of her pain.
At some point she had sat down on the couch, but the pressure of the upright position was too much, so she curled on her side.
“She offered to help out in whatever way she could for the birth,” Alex replied, and then followed it up with, “Kara, you still with us?”
“With you?” Kara erupted into nervous laughter. “Of course I am. I’m here, where else would I be? I mean, I’m also in the air flying over the park right now. Wow, there are so many ducks in the pond—“
There was a sudden sharp clang and then a groan came over the comms. Lena was the first to react, her voice frantic as she yelled, “Kara? Kara what happened, are you still there?”
“I’m fine,” Kara sighed, her speech a little slurred as though she had been dazed. “But uh, the lamppost on main sure isn’t.”
“You’re a PR disaster,” Alex muttered, and Lena could already picture the latest headline of Kara flying face first into the metal.
If she survived premature alien childbirth, Lena was going to kill her, and then maybe she would concoct a device that prohibited Kara from flying off on a whim.
Lena was so lost in her twisted fantasy that she never realized that when Alex was calling on her the agent was actually in her apartment. She groaned in distress when her mother strode over to place a cool hand against her forehead, and then rolled Lena onto her back to make eye contact as she chastised, “You couldn’t wait a few more weeks until I’d finished making your gift, could you? You always have to set your own rules.”
Lena grimaced at the building pressure inside her, the oncoming contraction ready to flare up as she hissed bitterly, “Yes mother, I’ve gone into labor purely to spite you. It’s been another lifelong ambition. I’m surprised you never knew that.”
“Up,” Lillian announced, though her hands were steady and surprisingly gentle as she helped Lena onto her feet. Alex was there in an instant, supporting Lena’s back and holding onto her as they hurried out the apartment.
“Wait,” Lena cried, and tried to break free of their hold. “My hospital bag, I need to get my—”
“I already have a bag for you,” Lillian insisted, and if Lena wasn’t mistaken there was a wetness to her mother’s eyes.
“Oh my god,” Lena blurted, startling both Alex and Lillian, who looked around frantically for any perceived threat. “You’re crying,” Lena pointed out with a jab of a finger.
Lillian looked murderously mortified and immediately schooled her features into a cold stare. “I am not.” She huffed out indignantly, refusing to meet Lena or Alex’s face as they moved into the express elevator. “Only sentimental fools tear up at times like these.”
Lena choked on a laugh, her eyebrows scrunching together as she persisted for her own amusement, “I thought that was as scientifically impossible as drawing blood from a stone or hell being real and actually freezing over.” She glanced at Alex and comically widened her eyes, “Maybe finding out you have a heart is a sign of the apocalypse.”
Lillian pursed her lips together and ignored Lena’s remarks in favor of changing the subject. “Where is your Kryptonian buffoon? Shouldn’t she have flown here by now, or has she gotten lost with a flock of geese?”
“That only happened one time,” Kara whined through the comms. There was the sound of a fight and Lena could only imagine that Supergirl was caught up with another disaster in National City. She tried not to dwell on it as squeezing pain began in her abdomen and she broke out in a cold sweat.
“She’ll be here.” Alex stated, voice firm despite the soothing circles she was rubbing along Lena’s back. “Lena, keep breathing, everything’s going to be okay.”
Lena nodded, gasping for breath as her contraction began in earnest. She tried grinding her teeth together to stop herself from screaming, but a quiet cry broke through her lips as they hurried out to Alex’s vehicle.
“Wouldn’t you much rather take my private car?” Lillian griped as Alex opened the door to the backseat and attempted to help Lena sit down.
“I’m not really concerned about getting to the hospital in style, and besides, I’ll get us there faster,” Alex argued and handed Lena a stress ball that had Supergirl on it.
Lena grabbed for the piece of merchandise and gave it a rough squeeze. She let out a quiet stream of curses as she watched the skyline for any sign of Kara. Somehow she had forgotten the calming techniques they practiced in La Maze.
Her concentration was all off, because she couldn’t so much as hear Kara through the comms, and she kept imagining scenes from the movie Alien Vs Predator whenever she thought about childbirth.
“All Kryptonians look just like humans, right?” Lena asked with a mild inflection of terror in her voice, though she already knew every fact about Kryptonian DNA.
“Of course,” Alex reassured her with a glance over her shoulder. “The sonogram looks perfectly normal and we have no reason to believe that this will be different than any other natural birth.”
“Oh, I can think of about twelve scientific reasons,” Lena countered and she would have listed them all if she hadn’t heard Kara through the comms.
“Did you have the baby?” Kara asked frantically with a soft, breathless huff. “Did I miss it?”
“How long do you think childbirth takes?” Lena countered immediately, irate and upset and now panicked that the child might actually have super speed. What if it shot out of her womb the moment she was fully dilated?
“Oh—I don’t know,” Kara stammered through the comms.
If Alex hadn’t cut her off, Lena might have screamed in frustration and not in agony.
“Kara, is J’onn with you?” Alex asked, speeding onto the road with total disregard for everyone else. “What’s the situation? We’re already on route to the hospital.”
“The hospital?” Kara gasped, and Lena was sure she heard something awful in the background as the alpha grunted, “Alex, shouldn’t we take her to the DEO?”
“What’s that supposed to mean, you think regular doctors can’t help with the birth?” Lena questioned. A thousand different things came to mind and Lena barely registered that she was clutching her mother’s jacket.
Lillian tactfully pried her fingers off one by one, and when Lena shot her a glare, Lillian sighed and relented.
“No, no, I just—I guess I was so used to getting your sonograms at the DEO, that I never thought we’d go to an actual hospital,” Kara rambled, higher pitched than usual as they discussed their birth plan for the very first time. She seemed out of breath, unfocused, and Lena wanted to threaten her into staying safe, even as she cursed her name when another contraction hit.
“Kara,” Alex shouted and slapped her hand against the steering wheel in frustration. “Is J’onn with you?”
“Oh, yeah he was,” Kara noted, and then a sharp screech echoed through the comms.
“What do you mean he was?” Lena turned her furious glare on Alex when Kara hesitated to answer and grit out, “Kara, what the hell is happening? And don’t you dare lie to me.”
“I might be having a small problem with some not-so-friendly aliens that have decided to follow me instead of fleeing.” Kara yelled the last words, and then crackled down the comms, “I’ll get to the hospital as soon as I can.”
Lena squeezed her eyes shut and tried to tune out the sounds of combat. They arrived at the hospital to a crowded Emergency Room, and then it became a competition of who could be mouthier, because both Lillian and Alex were aggressive about getting her into one of the nicest private rooms.
Lillian threatened to defund the hospital, as if it was in her power to stop Lena from funding the charities she truly cared about, and Alex even uttered a number of colorful threats.
For the most part, Lena was too fixated on childbirth to pay attention to it. A nurse came to ease her into a wheelchair and rush her off to get an epidural in the quiet ward where she had stayed a few times in the past.
Doctors came and went, and Lillian and Alex hovered outside the door to intercept them all, demanding answers to questions that even Lena hadn’t asked. It was endearing in a way, but Lena’s mind was elsewhere as she thought of Kara, and her eyes got misty when another contraction began without her.
She must have screamed from it, because suddenly Kara was skidding to a halt in the hallway, her glasses crooked on her nose and her sweater torn at the bottom. “Did I miss it? Is she okay? How far has she dilated? Why isn’t anyone sitting with her? I should have been here, I should have brought flowers, what if—”
The sound of slap echoed through the halls quickly followed by Kara’s incredulous voice as she whined, “Ow, why did that hurt?”
Lena caught sight of her mate rubbing her cheek as Lillian smirked and pulled off suspiciously vibrant green gloves that she hadn’t been wearing earlier. “I infused them with Kryptonite. It was worth every penny.”
Kara gawked at her while Alex rolled her eyes, “But why—”
“You were hysterical,” Lillian cut in with a pleased smile, as if she had been waiting on an excuse to slap Kara since she found out she had been sleeping with Lena. “Your absence has upset my daughter and she’s going through enough without worrying about you. Get in there before I do it again.”
Lena would have laughed, but the drugs had yet to kick in, and she was still furious that Kara had left her alone.
“Are you okay? Can I get you anything?” Kara asked the second she shut the door. Pride and rut pheromones diffused through the room and Kara pulled up a chair to sit beside Lena. She took her hand and pressed a kiss to her sweaty forehead as she confessed, “I can’t believe it’s really happening, you know?” Kara's nervous energy made her jittery as she rambled, “Like we’re really having a baby. I mean, that’s—"
“A one time thing,” Lena announced with a matter of fact jut of her chin and then lifted a cup of ice chips to her mouth. “Especially because you can’t even do me the courtesy of explaining where you’re going before flying away.”
“Lena, I’m sorry – I really am.” Kara’s sincerity showed in her eyes as she attempted to take Lena’s hand. “I’m so used to carrying the weight of responsibility to keep the people of this city safe that I forgot my first responsibility is to you, to us. Saving the world is important, but so is our relationship and our family. I should have taken the time to fill you in on what was happening instead of just rushing off like always. I promise I’ll do better.”
Tears welled in Lena’s eyes and she blinked them back as she stared at the diamond ring on her finger. She slipped it off in a moment of uncertainty and heard Kara’s sharp exhale of devastation. The inside was inscribed, and she tilted it to read the message: Your heart is my home.
Lena choked back a sob and handed the ring back to Kara, who looked ready to fall apart. She quietly demanded, “Ask me again. Properly this time.”
Kara didn’t even falter. She sank to her knees in the hospital room so fast she might have cracked the floor and held the ring up with such reverence that she looked like she was presenting an offering to the gods above. “On Earth people see me as a hero, but the truth is you’re mine, Lena. You always have been. There is no one in all the galaxy that’s like you. Nobody shines brighter. You’re fierce and kind and brilliant and your heart is unmatched. I knew from the moment I met you that I was destined to be yours. Lena Luthor, will you marry me?”
Lena’s chin wobbled before she could form words, but she nodded fiercely, this time meaning it without any reservations or hang-ups. “Yes, I’ll marry you,” she whispered and Kara shot to her feet to push the ring back into place on her finger.
From the hallway, she could hear Alex whoop in congratulations and her mother groan in disgust. Lena ignored them and reached out to grab ahold of Kara’s sweater to drag her in for a kiss. Their lips touched in a soft and romantic caress, which was cut short due to her contractions. She gripped Kara’s hand and squeezed fiercely as she went through the breathing exercises they had practiced for just a few weeks.
“I’m so not prepared for this,” Lena screamed and scrunched her eyebrows together in distress as she valiantly tried not to curse so soon after accepting Kara’s beautiful proposal. “We can get married, but I’m not sure how I feel about ever sleeping with you again. I hope you understand.”
“I—wait, what?” Kara blurted, distressed by the prospect of never experiencing intimacy with Lena ever again. It would have been funny even if Kara wasn’t in rut, but the pathetic scent of her was so strong that Lena was sure everyone in the hospital wing would smell it.
Lena answered her confusion with a scream as the contraction strengthened, and if Kara was an average alpha, she was sure she would have broken a finger or two with her grip.
“Why did you do this to me?” Lena grit out in painful accusation, and Kara flailed as nurses and a doctor rushed in to check her progress.
“Can you give her something?” Kara implored helplessly, her eyes wide and pale face comical, considering she was the Girl of Steel.
Lena would remind Kara of this later, when she didn’t feel like she was about to be ripped in two from the inside out.
“It was you giving me something that got me like this,” she pointed out a little vindictively as she fought through the embarrassment of a nurse checking to see how much she had dilated.
Kara laughed nervously and tried to affectionately wipe the sweat from Lena’s forehead as she rambled, “Remember your breathing exercises, okay? Try to stay calm.”
It was impossible to do what Kara asked when all of her instincts were telling her to push. It all happened so fast and with much less effort than she expected, but all the same it was a pain she doubted she would forget any time soon.
A doctor she had never met entered the room in scrubs, with Alex, her mother and Kara’s mother standing within distance of their door, and Lena didn’t care that she had a big audience. She screamed and uttered every curse she knew while she tried to break Kara’s hand with every bit of strength in her body.
“You are so fucking lucky that you’re made of steel, or I would rip your whole arm off, I swear to god,” Lena shouted at Kara as sweat trickled down her face and the doctor sat between her legs like a catcher waiting behind home base.
Kara’s anxiety appeared to be at a high and she handled it by laughing and crying at the same time, as Lena’s grip seemed to be having an effect on her after all. It must have been all of the adrenaline, or the fact that she was giving birth to a Kryptonian.
With a few intense pushes, Lena experienced agony and elation, and then the doctor handed her a squirming newborn.
Lena was so overwhelmed by it, and the relief that their baby was strong and healthy, despite her superhuman growth speed. She rested the newborn against her chest and began to sob in happiness and confusion while Kara stared down at their daughter in awe.
A loving hush fell over the room, with everyone taking in the little miracle cradled in Lena’s arms.
Kara was the one to break the silence, the emotion in her voice making the words warble as she leaned down to admire their baby. “She has your nose,” she whispered, gasping when the tiniest hand latched onto her index finger. Perfect little fingers curled around Kara’s knuckle and she heard the shuddering intake of breath before fat teardrops splashed onto her blanket.
It was a wondrous sight, even if they were both crying. At least it they were happy tears for a change.
“She’s perfect,” Lena uttered, unable to take her eyes off of their child. She had been so nervous about meeting her, so worried that she would feel nothing – and yet as she gazed down at the little scrunch of her baby’s pink face and the slightest wisps of blonde hair, Lena was filled with the most profound sense of love.
“Of course she is, she’s ours,” Kara insisted, her pride and love filling the space between them until Lena tugged her down onto the bed beside her so they could just marvel at the life they created together.
The little one needed to be bathed, and Kara clumsily cut the cord after Alex furtively handed her Kryptonite-laced scissors.
Lena was surprised by how desperately she wanted the baby back in her arms when the doctors walked away with her. She couldn’t even laugh when Lillian took ahold of her hand.
In a moment of pure weakness, her mother pulled her into an embrace and informed her, “You did so good, Lena, so good. Now let’s hope she has your intelligence.”
Kara half laughed half snorted and wetly quipped, “Yeah, I hope that too.”
Alex wrapped Kara up in a fierce hug and announced firmly, “Just so we’re clear, I’m holding her the second she gets back.”
Lena wiped her tears away with the back of her hand and sniffled. Her blood was coursing with so many hormones and she suddenly needed her alpha close.
Kara must have understood, because she shifted onto the bed with her and looped an arm around her shoulders. Lena tucked her face into Kara’s neck and realized that she was already re-thinking what she had said about future children.
“I want to call her Laura,” Lena whispered when the nurses presented them with the birth certificate. “It starts with an L, but it’s also anagram of your mother’s name. We can make her middle name Elizabeth after Eliza.”
Kara nodded, implicitly trusting her with that important decision.
She wrote the name down on the piece of paper, and then glanced up in time to see their daughter all swaddled and tucked into a rolling hospital crib.
Alex swooped down on the nurses to gather up her baby niece, and Lena let everyone have a turn at holding her before taking the newborn back.
Lena could have easily monopolized her, but instead, she transferred the baby into Kara’s arms and cuddled in beside her.
“Hi Laura,” Lena whispered, and with the most delicate touch, she stroked at the baby’s blonde fuzz.
Kara gazed down at their baby with a smile bursting with joy and leaned in close to whisper, “We’re so happy to meet you. You’re going to have such an incredible life, and we’ll be right here guiding you every step of the way.”
Laura peered up at them with captivating blue-green eyes, and Lena would have been content just to stay like that for hours if the doctor hadn’t also needed to tend to her. It took the medical staff a while to finish with Lena. While that happened, her mother, Alex and Eliza went down to the hospital café to buy coffee.
Kara rocked the baby and observed while the doctors cleaned Lena up, and afterwards a nurse showed her how to feed Laura. It gave Lena some alone time with Kara while she nursed, and she was grateful, because it allowed her to bring up topics they couldn’t exactly discuss in front of everyone else.
“She seems just like any other newborn.” Lena expressed in wonder, all of the nervous anxiety she had experienced accumulating to nothing but complete relief that their daughter wasn’t showing any immediate signs of superhuman capabilities.
“Clark and Lois spent a few months on Argo when my nephew was born,” Kara hesitantly mentioned, her attention still on Laura’s sleepy face. “You know, just in case he had powers.”
Lena was already dreading where this was going. The prospect of uprooting their lives for months would be more challenging than all the progress they had made working out their issues as a couple.
“Kara—”
“I don’t want that for us.” Kara admitted in a soft tone with steel behind it as she tore her gaze off of their daughter to meet the surprise in Lena’s eyes. “When Laura comes into her powers, I don’t want to raise her to be ashamed of them, or to grow up living in fear of who she is.”
Lena couldn’t argue with that, but she was stunned by Kara’s quiet outburst, as if this was something she had been agonizing over. She scrunched her brows together and slipped her hand into Kara’s, but her alpha wasn’t finished.
“I know it’s selfish of me to want to stay here, even if it makes life harder, but Lena, she’s ours.” Kara’s voice was filled with the same kind of earnest emotion that made Supergirl who she was, and she reiterated it as she smiled down at the sleeping baby nestled into Lena’s breast. “She’s ours and there’s nothing we won’t do for her. I want her to feel the sun on her face and meet the ducks in the park. I want her family around her all the time so she knows just how much she’s loved. I want her to get used to all the noises and the smells and the wonders of this planet, and I want her to feel as home here as I do. I don’t want to take any of that away from her. We can do this. I believe in us.”
Lena never voiced it at the time, but it was that little speech that completely mended the broken pieces of her heart. All of the love fused the fractures back in place, and though she knew there was a lot of healing that needed to be done, it no longer felt at all daunting or unattainable.
They didn’t take Laura to Argo, but they did make an extensive planner that meant their daughter would be around one of them at all times.
Alex and Sam volunteered to help out several times a week, and Lillian shocked the hell out of everyone when she unveiled her gift a few weeks later.
The pop up crib that contained state of the art Luthor technology to prevent anyone or anything getting to Laura when she was inside it. It was equipped with cameras that synced to Lena’s laptop so she could monitor Laura even from her office, and an audio feed for Kara that could be activated through her comms. Lillian even made it project animals and constellations onto the walls and ceilings in changing colors to keep Laura entertained, and Kara burst into tears when she found the setting that changed it all into Kryptonian, with the history of her home planet and their language.
Lillian refused to acknowledge that she had done it, and when pressed, insisted that it must have been a glitch in the software. Kara still referred to it as a baby cage, though it was far more affectionate when she said it now. Lena didn’t point it out, but she could feel a tentative respect blossoming between her mother and Kara that they both denied existed.
They juggled life, and work, and family dinners, falling into a perfect routine of diaper changes and breast feeding in between conference calls and saving the city. Everything changed completely, yet stayed relatively the same, except for Lena’s libido, which took a backseat due to exhaustion and recovery.
Lena expected their sex life to bounce back, but even after she fully recovered, it was lacking.
