While We Watch - Chapter 2

There had yet to be any incidents at the facility that required her to defend herself, but the habit had been ingrained in her for years, since the first signs of her extra-ordinary sex appeal presented themselves. She woke with her hands curling around a heavy encyclopedia to the sound of the buzzer and several alpha council members entering her bedroom.
It was not yet five in the morning, and she stared blearily at the alphas, who all wore suits with cufflinks that bore the logos of their respective companies.
Her delicate night gown drew their attention as she sat up. She immediately noticed the clipboard in the hand of Douglas Frame, the council vice president.
Frame’s angular features fit his name in two different ways — with a forehead as square and thick as a chopping block, and a smile that suggested he was in the habit of framing others for his mistakes.
Frame smiled at Lena and pulled a chair up to her bed, then tugged a silver pen from his shirt pocket.
“Miss Luthor, we felt this would be the best time to talk,” Frame explained. “Not only because our days are quite full lately, but also because it’s the one hour of the day when fewer people access your cams. For this sensitive matter, we assumed you would appreciate a little more privacy, although of course we don’t wish to hide anything from the public, either.”
The council secretary Martin Manheim lifted his white, bushy eyebrows at her and cleared his throat. Out of all the men, he was the oldest and perhaps the most patient, with kinder eyes that made Lena feel a little bit safer.
“This is about Miss Danvers,” Manheim coughed. “She has been helping you – with, uh —your personal health matters. We trust you have found her to be a satisfactory wellness therapist. How many sessions have you had with her now? It must have been—oh, several—in the last six weeks.” He shifted on the spot in discomfort, placing his large hands on his paunchy stomach.
Lena assumed that Manheim had been elected to speak with her because he discussed sex only through euphemisms, and he had the least threatening face on the council.
Manheim blinked owlishly at her, stabbing his glasses back onto his nose with a fat finger. “We have brought a document with us today that we would like you to read over and sign if you find it agreeable to you.” He gestured at the paperwork. “Please initial the bottom of each page.”
Frame passed the stack over to Lena, and she scanned the pages, which were all written like patient consent forms.
If she signed the documents, it would grant her more privileges to spend time in the company of Kara Danvers—but it also safeguarded the council from blame if Kara and Lena entered into a sexual relationship. The careful wording of the document made it seem like refusing to sign would result in the council choosing another person to handle her so-called wellness therapies.
Lena read the documents over twice and sat in silence until the anxious council members leaned in expectantly. She signed every page and thrust the stack of papers back into Frame’s waiting hand.
It might not have been the wisest decision to sign any more documents that came from the council, but she preferred what was familiar, rather than what was unknown to her. She wouldn’t want to choose another alpha. Kara’s visits had become a diversion from the monotony of reading or staring out the window and thinking about all of the places she could no longer go, and Lena was becoming comfortable with her.
“Very good, very good,” Manheim cheerfully declared when Frame offered him the important documents. “I think you have made a fine choice in Miss Danvers. She will be with you for the next 48 hours. We have set up a room for her overnight use.”
The junior council members Lawrence Peterson and Jonathan Von Aldrin elbowed each other in the ribs when they thought Lena was looking the other way. She suddenly felt much more wary, but each alpha politely said his goodbyes and left before Lena could ask any questions.
Frame was the only one who lingered to take back his pen, and he grinned down at Lena like a used car salesman who had just duped her into a bad deal.
“You let me know if you require any extra amenities this month, Lena,” Frame softly insisted, placing his hand on her shoulder. “You are my top priority at the moment.”
Lena rolled her shoulder free, but Frame’s pretend warmth never wavered as he made his exit.
Soon after the council members had gone, the intercom sounded again to notify her of Kara’s arrival. She went out to meet Kara without bothering to grab her robe.
Kara looked half asleep and confused by the time she entered the first room. She had a backpack slung over one shoulder and a bit of drool in the corner of her lip that she rubbed away before yawning.
“Morning,” Kara mumbled with a wave as she came down the hall, and then made her way towards the kitchen. “You want coffee?” she asked, already turning the pot on. “I think I’m going to need a liter of this before I’m awake.”
Lena still wore a silken night gown, because mysteriously her fresh laundry had never appeared for the week, and as soon as she spotted Kara’s personal backpack, she reached for it.
The alpha was about to fill two cups with coffee when Lena tugged out one of Kara’s button-downs and pulled it on over her head.
“I’m tired of walking around without any clothes on,” Lena explained. “The council claims I need to wear lighter-weight clothes because my temperature has been running hotter than average. It’s complete nonsense.”
“Keep it,” Kara generously offered. “I have others.”
Lena scooted by the alpha, no longer afraid of touching, and grabbed for the sugar and cream.
Kara dodged around her, and Lena eyed her curiously, wondering if the council had failed to tell her about the documents she had signed.
Lena experimentally placed her hand on Kara’s bicep, both to squeeze and to see how she would react.
Kara froze under her touch once it registered, and swung her gaze towards the nearest camera. Her stormy eyes narrowed as she waited for the blare of the intercom, and when it didn’t come, she blinked down at Lena with a bemused furrow of her brow.
“Well that’s new,” Kara remarked, her voice softer as she added under her breath, “You think they’re asleep at the desk?”
If Lena’s touch bothered Kara, it didn’t show on her face, and the alpha slid a steaming cup of coffee towards her with a lopsided smile.
“Doubtful. I bet they’re glued to their TV screens, watching everything we do,” Lena sniffed and glanced at the nearest camera, then leaned against it to give the viewers a close-up of her back. “I signed a document this morning, which was more of a waiver. I accepted you as my long term wellness therapist, and as such, I consented to accepting all forms of physical contact from you. Of course, in spite of what that document says, I trust you won’t touch me when I’m not wanting to be touched. Likewise, I would never overstep and touch you if you asked me to avoid it.”
Lena lifted her cup of coffee and took a long sip while watching Kara’s facial expression change from a dumbfounded to a more inquisitive look.
“I’m tired and I don’t think this coffee is going to help that.” Lena frowned. “I didn’t sleep well last night after you left, and then the council members woke me up to ask me to sign all of the paperwork. Can we go sit down?”
Not waiting for the alpha to agree, Lena hurried into the living room to make herself comfortable on the sofa.
Kara settled first and Lena took the seat beside her, casually pulling the alpha’s arm around her shoulder. From the silence that had fallen over her, Lena could only conclude that Kara was still processing the developments that had occurred that morning.
“You seem jumpy,” Lena noted and glanced meaningfully at the way Kara jostled her leg. “I thought maybe you considered me a friend by now, and you’d be comfortable with this, but I can sit at the other end of the couch if it will help you relax.”
Kara’s ears turned red and her leg stopped its rapid bounce. “I’m not uncomfortable,” she insisted, her head cocked to the side as she muttered, “I just find it strange that they didn’t inform me. I wonder why.” She raised the steaming mug to her lips and gulped half of her coffee down as if it held the answers she sought. After a moment she set it aside and reclined fully into the couch.
Kara’s arm tightened around Lena, a reassuring gesture that this change of circumstances was welcome.
“You can go back to bed if you want,” Kara suggested, and tried to stifle a yawn with the back of her hand. “I’m hardly awake myself.”
Lena was starved for affection of any kind, but she tried not to reveal that to Kara, and only shrugged noncommittally. “I’d rather stay here and finish my coffee.”
The bed would be more comfortable, but she wasn’t sure how to ask Kara to lie down with her.
“Besides, you make an alright pillow.” Lena used her little joke to smoothly push herself closer, finding a comfortable spot against Kara’s chest to rest her head. Her coffee mug still brimmed near to fullness, but she put it aside and forgot about it.
Kara’s warmth lulled her into a peaceful doze. She hardly opened her eyes when she felt the alpha’s arms looping underneath her.
Picking her up, Kara carried her into the bedroom, and when it seemed the alpha might place her down and go, Lena drowsily murmured, “Stay.”
Kara hesitated for only a split second, her voice barely audible as she whispered, “Okay.”
Lena’s bed was large and incredibly soft, and she sank into it when Kara laid her gently onto the mattress. Kara pulled the blankets over her, and seemingly on a whim tucked them around her shoulders before sitting down to take her boots off.
Kara didn’t fuss with the covers for herself, and ultimately stretched out on her back above the duvet, her hands tucked under her head as she stared at the ceiling.
When Lena next stirred, she found herself turned towards the wall with Kara at her back and one of the alpha’s arms secured around her waist. She must have guided it around her, because she still loosely clutched at it.
“No one’s ever held me while I slept before,” Lena muttered to herself in surprise, her voice still scratchy from sleeping.
It occurred to her that she shouldn’t romanticize or take comfort from this, not when Kara was only acting on behalf of a council that wanted to see her quarantined for the rest of her life. Kara had signed a contract to follow orders, and the alpha still had the freedom to come and go at her leisure. It would have been a mistake on Lena’s part to think that Kara’s loyalties were to her.
Even so, Lena shifted towards Kara and placed a hand on the alpha’s cheek, filled with fleeting wonder and a strong hope that she actually cared.
Lena glanced at the encyclopedia that was still in her bed, tucked away next to a pillow, and then back to the sleeping alpha who could protect her better than a heavy object.
Imagining scenarios of Kara betraying her was just as easy whenever she fantasized. That possibility came back to her each time, leaping into her mental vacation like a photo-bombing tourist.
“Kara?” Lena whispered.
Kara roused from sleep with a low grunt. Her tired eyes blinked open and when they focused on Lena, she exhaled softly, “Guess we both napped, huh?”
The alpha rubbed at Lena’s side before she must have realized what she was doing, and then sat up and swung her legs off the bed to stretch. The sound of her back cracking was interspersed with a quiet noise of relief. Kara stuck her feet back into her boots and laced them promptly, then she stood up and looked down at Lena in the bed.
“Breakfast?” Kara asked, running her palm over her chin as she seemed thoughtful. “You don’t have a stove, though, so I’ll see what I can do.”
Lena glanced at her with a coy smile, slid out of bed, and beckoned her into the first sitting room. A lavish breakfast awaited them on the table, just as she expected.
“They usually bring my breakfast as soon as they see I’m waking up,” Lena gestured.
Taking a croissant and a scoop of eggs for herself, Lena slipped into one of the chairs. She plucked the croissant apart and popped small bites into her mouth while she studied Kara.
“I suppose we’re in no rush to begin my therapy today,” Lena considered. “I want you to know that I still don’t feel any pressure to have sex with you, although I’ve never been more sure that the council expects it. They allow me to watch the news, and I’ve figured out how to hack their network to get all of the gossip channels. After only a few weeks together, everyone is dying to know when we’ll be taking our next steps.”
Kara froze up, as though she hadn’t actually considered sex to ever be on the table. It must have dawned on her then, if her frown was anything to go by, that she had been missing her toolkit when she arrived.
“They never gave me a bag.” Kara said it as if the council’s actions made no sense, and the steel blue of her eyes gradually brightened as if figuring it out. “That was the point of having you sign those papers.”
Kara glared at the table and breakfast banquet as though it was part of a puzzle she was sorting out, then she grabbed a plate and piled eggs and bacon and toast onto it, though whether from nerves or hunger, Lena couldn’t be sure.
“I try not to watch anything that involves this,” Kara confessed around a mouthful of food, then paused, taking in Lena as if understanding her in a new way. “Wait, you hacked into their network?” she asked, a faint smile pulling at the corner of his mouth until Lena could see that she was impressed. “Find anything good? You know, other than gossip channels.”
“Nothing good enough to get me out of here,” Lena admitted with a shrug, although she had figured out how to turn off the cameras for a limited period of time, which was a skill that could come in handy.
Lena flipped one of the monitors on and changed it to a channel where she could see the security guards eating breakfast sandwiches.
“They’re all well aware of the risks they’re taking by giving me access to TV and internet, but if they cut me off from the world entirely, that might be seen as limiting my access to free information, not to mention free speech. How could they do that with everyone watching my every move?” Lena’s brow scrunched as she asked the question like someone else who might be critical of her entire situation, but then she smiled over it. “It would seem they’re doing something right, considering the public’s approval rating has only gone up. Do you really not pay attention to what they say about us? You have an entire fan club.”
Kara scoffed and finished off her eggs, then brushed her thumb across her lower lip to wipe away crumbs.
“Do I look like someone who enjoys fan clubs?” Kara sighed and leaned on the table to grab for a glass of orange juice. “The council has to make allowances for the media, because otherwise there would be significant backlash from the public. You’re right about that, but I’m not going to watch the circus they create. I don’t need to hear what everyone thinks of me. All that matters is what I think of me.”
Kara made it sound easy, but it clearly took a lot of discipline not to feed into the temptation to see what they said about her.
“Does it make you feel any better watching that stuff, seeing what they say about you?” Kara asked with genuine curiosity as she drained her glass of juice and pushed the jug towards Lena with a nod of encouragement. “Vitamins,” she stated seriously. “Make sure you have some.”
Lena poured herself a glass of juice and sipped it while she changed the channel on the television. She pointed to footage of herself, watering the plants in the sunniest room of the facility while humming to break up the silence. The clip changed to one of her and Kara in the bedroom, sharing a moment of quiet conversation prior to one of their sessions.
The anchor Andrea Rojas gave a brief update about the paperwork Lena signed only hours earlier. Then Andrea and another host began to conjecture about what it meant for the romance of the young couple.
Placing a hand on her hip, Lena turned off the television, itching to comment on Andrea’s ridiculous gossip coverage.
“At least today Andrea isn’t giggling about how attractive you are,” Lena sniffed. “You should have seen her story about your work-out routine. She was practically salivating, and there’s this whole other narrative she feeds to the public about the nature of my relationship with you.”
“What other narrative?” Kara asked dryly. Her expression showed no amusement, and she impulsively took the controller back to turn the flat screen on again.
Lena began to regret talking about Andrea, because Kara seemed to be intent on learning what she could from the show.
“I knew people were tuned in to watch us. I just never considered they would—you know.” Kara waved her hand towards Andrea on the screen, and cringed as it shot to a clip of her and Lena playing darts a few days ago. “Play it back so they could talk about it?”
Kara seemed perplexed by Andrea’s enthusiasm, and she turned the station over before she heard them say anything else.
“They not only play it back, but scrutinize every frame, especially during our sessions,” Lena snorted, unable to control the way she gestured wildly or the glimmer of anger in her eyes. “Psychologists have chimed in to give their expert opinions on what our facial expressions mean. There’s even one sex therapist who has been talking all about the benefits of this arrangement, how I need companionship, and who better to provide it than you? If you look online, there are fans that have even predicted what our future children might look like.”
She dropped her juice glass with a thud and stalked over to her laptop, which was still open to a page where graphic images of her nudity and all of the video clips from the cameras were easy to access.
By accident, she selected one of the videos, and before she could stop it, Kara saw about three seconds of her hand gently pushing their usual silicone cock into her pussy.
Kara cleared her throat and reacted quickly by shutting the laptop. It cut Lena’s recorded moan short and the alpha pressed her chin into her chest as if that would disguise her embarrassment, or the way her body reacted to it.
“Okay. That’s enough of that.” Kara stated gruffly. Her throat sounded dry and she avoided Lena’s eyes.
Without giving her the chance to take the laptop back, Kara snatched it up and moved it out of the way on the top of the cupboard—which was conveniently just out of Lena’s reach. Kara had a height advantages of just a few inches on her.
“You’ll drive yourself crazy if you keep watching this stuff,” Kara argued. “I’ve only watched it for two minutes, and I’m already itchy at the thought of people creating images of kids, so how about we wipe it from our minds and focus on something else?”
“No. Give me that back.” Lena’s jaw stiffened and she glared at the location where her laptop sat. She tried to shove Kara aside and attempted to perch on her tiptoes, then used the counter for leverage. Kara still blocked her way, and if she wanted her laptop back, she would have to ask the alpha nicely to get it down, or otherwise pull up a chair.
Instead of choosing either of those options, Lena continued to press into Kara, determined to move her even an inch. She lashed out, not striking Kara, but definitely rough in how she grabbed at her. Her behavior might be perceived as ridiculous, but her freedoms had been taken away from her, and it made her angry to even temporarily be denied access to her laptop. With an elbow, she sent the ceramic container that held the sugar toppling into thick pieces on the floor. She knocked over every breakable item on the counter in one sweep.
Only when she was midway through the tantrum did she realize what was happening.
Kara took hold of her arms until she found her self-control.
Without much struggle, Lena went limp against the alpha and tried to breathe. As she finally began to calm down, she tucked her face against Kara’s chest, and Kara in turn wrapped her arms around her in a hug. She felt a sob in her throat, but she wouldn’t allow it to be free, and then she was fine—back to normal.
“What do you want to do?” Lena meekly asked, unwilling to talk about her brief breakdown.
Kara’s chin rested on the top of her head, and she rubbed Lena’s back, comforting her until she finally glanced up at Kara.
“I had an idea,” Kara admitted, and spun her around by the shoulders to give her a gentle push forward so they could walk down the hall. “You’ve got a lot of pent up energy that’s just building up pressure inside of you. You’re restless, angry, and if you keep bottling it up, sooner or later you’re going to explode. While that might be great entertainment for everyone at home, it’s not going to do you any favors.”
Kara took the lead and motioned towards the sliding glass door that would allow them entrance into the spacious garden. It was lined with a fifty foot fence to stop her from ever leaving the facility, but at least it granted them fresh air.
“Go change, and then meet me out there. I’ll join you in a minute.” Kara must have seen Lena’s hesitance, because she reached for her arm and lightly squeezed it. “Trust me, you’ll like this.”
Lena marched off to put on her only suitable clothes for outdoor activities — tight shorts to go under Kara’s button down shirt, which she rolled up at the sleeves. She braided her hair to keep it from getting in her face and went to meet Kara back outside.
Kara had rounded up what she needed from the indoor gym and returned a few minutes later with boxing gloves that she tossed Lena’s way when she strode into the garden.
“Put them on,” Kara instructed, and slid her own hands into punching mitts. “Let’s unleash some of that rage,” she instructed, and raised her hands up to beckon Lena closer. “Show me what you’ve got.”
Lena shoved her small hands into the heavy gloves, then squinted up at Kara in the sunlight. She knew how to throw a punch and proved it with a right upper-cut, followed by three jabs and a hook.
“Surprised?” Lena asked when Kara stepped back and re-adjusted.
Kara shook her head and grinned, and after that it became easier to hit with full force. Soon Lena was sweating, lost to the burn of her muscles and her emotions.
Kara had no reason to do this with her unless she mattered to the alpha on some level—not as a duty, but as a person.
“This is a form of ‘therapy’ I hope we engage in more often,” Lena laughed, continuing to swing her fists with as much power as she could manage. She kept at it until she needed a break.
Her heavy breathing made her slow down after twenty minutes of nonstop rage. She shook out both of her hands and paced around the garden.
“Give me two minutes and I’ll be ready to go again,” Lena promised.
Her stamina returned in under a minute, so she resumed punching and avoiding conversation, until she noticed the way Kara was looking at her – in encouragement but also with concern.
“What’s on your mind, Danvers?” Lena asked.
“Oh, you know,” Kara gestured towards her with one mitt and tipped her head to the side. “Wondering how so much energy can be contained in such a small package.” The joke rolled off her tongue and seemed to mask the worry that Lena had seen, hidden by a grin as she held her hands up. “Maybe I’m making this too easy. Try to get me as I duck and weave.”
Kara had learned her pattern of movement and compensated accordingly. Whenever Lena moved forward, Kara stepped back, or to the side, her hands moving low, then moving high until they danced around the garden with the sun beating down on them.
“You can do better than that.” Kara insisted, never allowing her to stay still for more than a second.
Lena was agile enough to land a few hits, but she sensed it only happened because Kara allowed it to happen. Following her around the yard, she swung desperately and missed every time.
In a weak attempt to stop Kara, she stumbled in closer and wrapped her arms around the alpha’s broad back, chuckling as she tried to slow a retreat. She laughed harder when Kara slipped her arms around her waist.
Lena pretended to fend Kara off, but all she really did was grin from ear to ear and hang on. Kara was watching her with intensity.
The alpha’s lips were a distraction, and Lena tossed off her glove to tuck a blonde curl behind Kara’s ear.
The temptation to kiss her came on all at once and Lena impulsively acted on it. She gripped Kara’s shirt and leaned in, but it was a shy kiss that made her blush and her heart race.
Embarrassed, she self-consciously canted her head to the side and continued to softly laugh.
Kara swayed where she stood, jaw slack and eyes glazed, but the heat of her ears burning must have snapped her out of her haze, because she tightened her arms around Lena’s waist and lifted her off the ground. The alpha spun her in circles, like a dancer, and Lena laughed.
When she finally stopped and set Lena back down, they were both uncoordinated. Kara pulled the mitts off her hands and let them fall at her feet, a mistake she realized when she stumbled over one and landed on her knees.
The alpha relented to gravity and sprawled out on the warm grass, her eyes shut to block out the blinding sun above.
“I’m gonna need a minute,” Kara announced dramatically. “The world is still tilting.”
Lena waited for her own dizziness to pass, along with all of the unwanted feelings that were the main reason she staggered on her feet.
She was beginning to develop a deeper connection with Kara and it both excited and frightened her.
“Take your time,” Lena muttered. “I need — I need to shower.”
Lena took two steps back, then fled from the garden and went into the bathroom.
Although shutting out the rest of the world wasn’t possible, she could still lock the door on Kara.
She threw off Kara’s shirt and the pair of tight shorts she had worn during their work-out. Choosing the coldest setting on the shower, she closed herself inside the glass stall and scrubbed the sweat from her skin.
If she wanted to, she could speak to the cameras and the public. Providing an update on her actions would give Kara and everyone else little chance to speculate over what the kiss meant.
Lena had considered talking to the cameras many times after Kara had been assigned to her, but she assumed no one would take her words at face-value, and plenty of people would use anything she said against her. It was easier to be a silent animal in a cage, and to offer up minimal information, because that was the one aspect of her situation that she could control.
It wasn’t that she cared about how everyone else saw her, or what they would think of the kiss.
What mattered most was that Kara would be focused on it now, and the public’s various interpretations of what she had done.
There would be the famous psychologists with their own talk shows who would no doubt call this Stockholm syndrome—and there would be gossip mongers that would take Lena’s horrible situation and frame it as romantic, and biased newscasters, who might use the kiss as proof that she was just trying to seduce Kara.
Deep down, it bothered her that she had formed a strong and instantaneous attachment to the alpha. That against all logic, she wanted Kara’s attention and protection.
The noise of the intercom interrupted her thoughts with a demand.
“Between the hours of five and seven PM, Miss Danvers will conduct your wellness therapies. Please refer to the manual in your bedroom detailing your treatment options.”
Lena stepped out of the shower to towel herself dry, and before she even bothered to put clothes on, she sought out the manual. She glanced at the pages of the booklet, then took it to Kara.
During Lena’s shower, Kara had wandered into the kitchen for a drink and a snack, and she found the alpha standing with her back against the counter.
Lena silently handed the manual over and avoided making eye contact.
Kara lowered her iced coffee to accept the manual with a frown deepening a crease across her forehead.
“You okay?” Kara asked lightly, her gaze only momentarily searching Lena’s face, as if she knew not push for more than that.
Kara flipped the four page booklet open and balked at the contents.

“Miss Luthor will select her therapy options from the manual, Miss Danvers.” A voice coolly stated over the intercom, effectively silencing Kara. “And you will do your duty.”
Lena swallowed against a lump forming in her throat. She reached over and thumbed to the first page, which described stimulating each other with their hands. The descriptions seemed to suggest that both vaginal and anal penetration were necessary for the treatment to be successful.
“Today’s therapy session should be carried out in the atrium.” The voice on the intercom commanded with a quiet hiss and crackle. “Guards have been posted nearby to supervise the session for the safety of both participants.”
With fake indifference, Lena sank down onto the couch and leaned against a pillow.
“Might as well just do what they say. There’s little point in fighting back,” Lena murmured. “Do you still think this is as far as it will go between us? That the council really won’t have you do more?”
Kara paced around, her coffee apparently forgotten as she shot a dark look towards the camera.
