To be a frontiersman required cunning and a hardihood that most people lacked. Lena Luthor’s father had been quite successful at it, both by trading goods and by setting up new shipping routes, and one of the streets in Quebec City had even been named after his little spaniel who had followed him from field to factory. As a child, Lena knew only that her father was a respectable man, and that their prosperity as a family came from risk taking of the decent sort. Her brother, on the other hand, was uncouth and careless, and the risks that he took were not to be compared.
After the passing of their father, her brother’s habit of gambling preoccupied him, and he left a foreman in charge of the family factories. He summoned a young governess from France to see to Lena’s care, and all she knew of her brother thenceforth was his infrequent appearances at supper, where he would stare at her from behind a glass of sherry or whiskey.
Lena was left alone most evenings with a book, or else she would sit at the piano and plunk down a few keys. She had much a greater ease with the harp, but her brother Lex had sold it to someone, along with many of the other fine things that belonged to her. It had happened on one winter’s night after Lena went into her first heat, and the alphas who had come to carry off the harp had looked like they had wanted to carry her off, too.
She had noticed the tiny glimmer of interest in Lex’s eyes as he observed her with the alphas, and then it was gone, along with her favorite instrument.
Sometime thereafter, Lex began to invite guests over to play at cards and dice, against all of the advice of Lena’s governess, Miss Grant.
The house started to smell of aggression and competition, and Lena was instructed to keep to herself. She often stayed out in the snow until the sky turned deep blue and frost formed on her eyelashes. Her teeth would chatter and she would run home, hugging at her warm fur coat.
Lena had just gotten through the door one evening when she breathed in her governess’ familiar scent — as ever, angry and protective.
Miss Grant waited for her in the parlor, and before Lena could even ask what was the matter, the stern older omega was cupping her cheek.
“I’ve been told to visit my cousin’s house and not to return here for a fortnight,” Miss Grant whispered and regarded her with enough concern that it stopped the chatter of Lena’s teeth.
Lena was confused by the news of Miss Grant’s departure, and a little frightened by the older omega’s uncharacteristic and demonstrative shows of affection towards her.
“Your brother is plotting something, and I want you to be on guard,” Miss Grant instructed, and handed her a box that held a pistol that she must have taken off an English officer.
Lena took the box and placed it out of sight in her little drawing desk, then watched in silence as Miss Grant exited the parlor and grabbed her bags from the front hall.
The stench of a rutting alpha traveled to Lena’s nostrils as soon as the doors swung shut behind Miss Grant.
Lena turned to see Lex and the alpha in question, whose wide eyes followed her curves. Based on the reek alone, Lena could only assume there were other alphas present in the house.
“Lena, this is Mr. Graves,” Lex announced with a sweep of his hand and then strode forward to clasp her by the shoulder. “I know I don’t typically invite you to my parties, but I wish for you to have a bath and then come join us.”
“Why?” Lena asked with a tiny notch of confusion between her eyes and dropped her voice to add, “You never encourage me to be in mixed company, least of all with a rutting alpha.”
Lex took ahold of her by the elbow to lead her towards the stairs. “This is a much different occasion, and you are a lady now. Old enough to attend parties.”
Lena could have scoffed at that, but instead she took the steps fast and with a sure-foot, so as to avoid an argument.
She went into her bedroom to find a washing tub all set up, and then removed her coat, sash and dress with eagerness.
The hot water felt so good that she almost forgot she was preparing herself to be in the company of her brother’s guests. She did all that she could to waste time and wrinkle her skin, and even after she climbed from the tub, she dawdled in dressing herself.
It irritated Lex when she was late in appearing – but his irritation went away when he saw how every alpha in the room reacted to Lena’s presence. She wore the finest fashion from Paris, a pale pink gown with sheer lace above her bust.
“So this is Miss Luthor,” commented a bespectacled alpha with a crooked grin. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Clark.”
Most of the other alphas lacked the warmth of the first to introduce himself – but Lena listened patiently and gave her hand as they all greeted her: Mr. Clark Kent, Mr. Otis Graves, Miss Andrea Rojas, Mr. James Olsen, Miss Alexandra Danvers, and Mr. Morgan Edge.
Lex had reserved her a seat next to his own, and Lena wondered if she was meant to be a distraction to prevent the other alphas from winning at cards.
Lena was much too shy to engage any of them on Lex’s behalf, so she sat quietly as her brother doled out drink and talked of business.
“Miss Luthor, should I deal you in, or are you content to watch?” Mr. Edge inquired with a sneering smile as he glanced down at her bosom, and then took the deck from Lex.
Lena could scarcely breathe with all of the pheromones around her, and she sensed her fragrance was affecting every alpha in turn.
“She doesn’t have any property or money of her own,” Otis Graves grunted, and the reek of his rut was almost sickening.
“I can think of a few attributes she possesses that could come into play,” Mr. Edge snickered.
From across the table, Miss Alexandra Danvers glared as though she found Edge vile.
“That is no way to address my sister,” Lex chided, much more blandly than if he was truly upset by Edge’s remarks. “She’s just come of age, and I think we ought to tone down our usual talk of omegas tonight.”
Lena was uninitiated in the ways that alphas could talk, so she was rather naive as she leaned forward and questioned, “Usual talk?”
Edge’s grin was malicious and he threw back a glance at the stone hearth. “When you omegas go into heat, you’re like that fire with a blaze deep inside. You need a good poke to keep you going.”
Mr. Graves lifted the poker next to the fire and jabbed at the crumbling bit of wood.
“Don’t you listen to Edge’s metaphors,” Miss Rojas cut in, with protective and greedy scents that circled around Lena.
Lena blushed as she realized just how many pokers in the room were at the ready to stoke her fire, but she said nothing as watched the alphas begin to play their first game.
Clark Kent had the best hand, and he won without much effort, cleaning out his opponents with a good sported laugh. He clapped Lex’s shoulder playfully, and when the evening came to an end, he agreed they could settle debts at a later time.
Lena was grateful for Clark’s skill, because it made the evening end sooner.
She rushed up the staircase to her bedroom at the earliest chance, and she would have gone straight to bed if she didn’t experience the strangest impulse to look out through the window. Perhaps she was worried that one of Lex’s guests would stay and harass her, but she wanted to see each one of them gone.
Three carriages pulled away, and then another carriage drove up. From this last carriage, a Kara Danvers appeared with a lantern, and Lena caught sight of the alpha’s handsome face. They stared at each other, sharing eye contact for a long moment, and then the softest of smiles graced Kara’s face.
It startled Lena when her brother entered her bedroom to find her still gawking.
“I need to speak with you,” Lex curtly announced and sat down in an armchair at Lena’s bedside. “Tomorrow I need you to accompany me into town.”
There was no sense in trying to argue, though a deep worry began to seep into her bones.
With Miss Grant out of the house, Lena was forced to keep the peace, and she knew quite instinctively that if she resisted Lex’s demands, what little remained of her possessions would be the first to be taken away to pay off his mounting debts.
It was a wonder they still had a roof over their heads with the reckless way her brother gambled away their inheritance.
“I expect you to be ready and presentable by early evening tomorrow.” Lex intoned, pushing the hair from the side of her face to reveal her pale neck, which was yet to be tarnished by an alpha’s claim. “Wear something more befitting of your age.”
Lena knew what he meant, and though she tried to smother her fear behind the cloak of confusion, the sharp acrid scent of it permeated the air.
“You wish me to look provocative,” Lena whispered, her good sense gone, along with her ability to hold her tongue.
There was a flicker of a smirk on Lex’s lips. “I merely want you to resemble the woman you now are. The sooner you reflect that, the better.”
“What would Father think?” Lena asked, aghast at the prospect of having to sit prettily by Lex’s side while he frittered away the rest of their belongings.
“Nothing. He’s dead, and I’m doing everything I can to ensure that we don’t follow him,” Lex candidly replied with just enough bitterness to make Lena recoil.
Lex made himself sound good with noble intentions, but it was his ill temper and frivolous whims that had squandered their fortune. If he had been half the man that their father was, he would have forsaken his predilections for drink and games, and thrown himself into running the factories. Lena felt the peculiar stirrings of resentment, hot like coals where her heart beat frantically. She would not cry or give Lex any reason to berate her further, and stayed silent so he would leave her bedroom.
The following morning she avoided her brother, and by mid afternoon, she could feel the warmth of her skin as her temperature rose.
Lena’s heat was on the cusp of roaring to life, and she shivered while she bathed, the hot water seeming cold to her already. She dressed in her most flattering clothes, and then applied make-up sparsely to her already blushing cheeks and red, full lips.
When she finally left her room, Lex greeted her with a nod of approval, and ushered her into the family carriage.
To set foot inside one of the premises that her brother frequented called to Lena’s innate curiosity, even if it was to her own detriment.
Being surrounded by the alphas yesterday was overwhelming, and Lena worried how many she would encounter at Kent’s establishment.
The streets bustled with men and women of all sorts. Some gawked openly when she hurried to keep up with Lex. Lena could feel their eyes roaming over her the way their hands must have wanted to touch. She bowed her head and tried to hide behind her brother, but her fragrant omega perfume was trailing behind her enticingly.
Lex stopped her at the doors of the establishment with a firm hand on wrist, and spoke in a hush, “Before we go in, you’d do well to remember yourself. Do not embarrass me. Speak only when spoken to, and always, always follow my lead.”
Lena winced at the pressure of his grip, and gave a curt nod, because she could not trust herself to say that she agreed.
The moment the door was pushed open, a thick wall of aggressive scent hit her square in the face and she reeled back from it. Her mind encouraged her to flee while her body urged her forward. Lena shamefully found herself inhaling the stench of the alphas that milled around inside.
She could not explain why, even as she panicked, that her loins became sticky, and she thought of morning flowers covered in fresh dew.
Lex led her straight through a gathering of alphas, who all stopped in their games to watch Lena pass. She followed her brother to a counter where a man was serving ale and keeping a ledger of the night’s bets.
“Bruno, my good man, I’ve come to settle my debts tonight,” Lex sang and reached for the fountain pen that sat on the counter.
“Not you again, Luthor.” Bruno shook his head in disgust and pulled the ledger away before Lex could press the inked pen to it. “Unless you’ve brought the money you already owe, or something of equal value, I have to turn you out.”
Lena lacked an awareness of what was happening until Lex’s hand moved onto her back and he gave her a gentle push forward. She blinked in shock as Bruno sized her up and his eyes gleamed with interest.
“You can’t mean to gamble me away?” Lena asked with incredulity and then pulled back from Lex, who took firm hold of her arm and kept her from fleeing.
“Just certain parts of you,” Lex intoned, and tightened his grip until Lena could no longer fight against him.
Bruno ignored her small struggle with her brother and leaned over the counter to speak to him. “Kent is around and he’ll never go for it. Come back in a few hours. I know someone who will be very interested in Miss Luthor.”
Lena’s lip curled in repulsion as she finally gave a strong enough yank of her arm to escape Lex’s clutches.
The alphas who had overheard Lex’s plot were already releasing sexually aggressive pheromones, and she felt like she might faint when she considered that one of them might be touching her before the evening's end.
To her utter horror, Lex urged her into a seat by the counter where other goods had been left as collateral.

I’d never risk you if I wasn’t certain I can win.”
That small bit of reassurance should not have brought even the slightest comfort to her, but Lena wanted to believe Lex.
Her naïveté must have been obvious to the alphas who surrounded her, because she heard a soft chuckle from the bar. She set her eyes on the door where Lex took his exit and then sat anxiously fiddling with the brooch along her bust.
Her gloves, bracelets and dress felt suddenly very confining, and she began to breathe heavier as the fragrance of her heat set in. She patted down her neck with a handkerchief while she subtly sniffed at alpha pheromones out of curiosity. It was only outdoors that she came to her senses, and put as much distance between herself and Kent’s establishment as possible.
She had a few coins in her purse and she entered an inn on the far side of town with a desperate plan forming in her mind. If she allowed Lex to gamble with her virginity and he happened to lose, she would be a ruined omega, never to find a mate, or to bear legitimate children.
Lena glanced around the inn almost fearfully as she thought about finding an alpha who would be willing to claim her on her own terms.
The inn was filled with people she knew, including two alphas who had expressed their previous interest, though her eyes wandered away from them, and towards someone else.

Lena smiled with radiance as she offered up her hand to Kara, and then shivered in delight when the alpha kissed her gloved fingers.
It was as though the moment at Kent’s had never happened, and she prayed that this chance meeting with Kara would at the very least provide a distraction until her brother came to collect her.
“Do you mind if I join you for a drink?” Lena inquired, and then frowned as Kara stood up as though to leave — but the alpha merely walked to the bar to order her both food and ale.
“I’m always happy for the company,” Kara confided and licked her bottom lip, all while keeping her eyes right at Lena’s neck.
Lena noticed the softest scent in the air, a polite alpha pheromone that announced interest without being too demanding.
“I saw you outside my home last night,” Lena commented with a gentle smile and small gesture of her hand. “Your sister and cousin attended one of my brother’s private parties.”
“They did, yes,” Kara agreed with a troubled furrow of her brow and then she propped an arm up on the table between them. “I declined my invitation, though I have been meaning to call on you.”
“Me? Why?” Lena questioned and leaned into the tabletop between them as the tiniest flicker of desire began low in her belly.
“Your harp,” Kara uttered almost shyly, and swept her gaze across the room as if to avoid Lena’s eyes. “When I discovered that Mr. Luthor had lost it to Mr. Edge, I bartered for it so I could return it to you.”

Lena was stunned by the admission, and though she couldn’t be sure, she hoped that Kara wasn’t just talking about the instrument. She acted without any thought as to how it might look, and clasped Kara’s hand atop the table. “Thank you, but I'm afraid I have no way of repaying you for your losses.”
A more cynical side of her thought of Lex, and how he would likely sell the harp off if he found it back in the house.
“The only loss I’ve encountered is not hearing the music you play whenever I arrive to take my sister and cousin home,” Kara informed her earnestly, and made no move to take her hand back.

Kara appeared to hesitate just outside the room, her fingers nervously clasped around the key which was poised at the lock.
“Trinkets and finery that I believe rightfully belong to you,” Kara finally admitted, and unlocked the door to coax Lena inside.
Kara had amassed quite a collection of Lena’s belongings – pieces of her jewelry, pins and brooches, along with earrings and pearls. The whole of the room was filled with her paintings and furniture, and a small wooden rocking horse from when she was young.
Lena often wondered where all of her possessions had gone, and it made her emotional to see them all again. She bent down beside the rocking horse and touched its yarn mane, then moved towards her harp where it rested in the corner.
