It was not that she intended to make further disturbances in their small town. Lena graciously accepted it into her hands, and although it appeared that Sam expected her to open it later, she tore at the brown paper to find two gowns for infants.
“Why have you given me two?” Lena questioned jovially, and lifted the pretty little gowns in the hopes of showing Kara.
“Instinct tells me you’ll require them both, and in future years, many more.” Sam glanced downward at Lena’s belly, which had only just begun showing the barest indication of occupancy.
Lena was full of a pride that was novel to her, and it had all to do with the thought of cradling a baby while Kara stood at her side, holding another of their children in her arms — precious small tokens of their love. She gave the two tiny garments to Nia, who was waiting to relieve her of them, and allowed Sam to lead her through the gathering of omegas. The reasonable excuse would hold no weight to suspicion and before Kara could breathe any objection, Lena pulled away while exuding the most alluring scent. “I trust you’ll find me,” she whispered, and then she turned on her heel to hurry towards Nia, who scarcely had the chance to take a bite of her sandwich.
She brought the girl along until they were alone in the hallway and then ushered the beta to the kitchen to request the punch bowl be filled.
Lena’s deviously frisky nature kept a rosy blush on her cheeks, and when she spied Kara making her way out of the room, she hurried off to one of the smaller parlors more befitting a luncheon with a few guests.
The alpha strode in after her not a minute later and Lena made quick of her intentions. She silenced the question on Kara’s tongue with a searing kiss and deftly unbuttoned her mate’s trousers.
She was on her knees before Kara’s eyes even opened, and the soft silk of her gloved hand teased along her alpha’s throbbing shaft.

The furious stink of Lockwood was swept aside with the sudden surge of rage that Clark infused into the air.
The growl that tore out of Clark was enough to make some of the guests submit instinctively, and he drew up to his full intimidating height with a clenched fist ready to be drawn back.
Mr. Edge and Mr. Lord stepped in to restrain him so fast that Lena staggered from their momentum.
Sam caught her by the waist and Nia rushed to her side while the other omegas moved forward to create a bubble of safety around her.
“Easy Clark,” Morgan uttered with an incline of his head toward the fearful omegas, who gaped at the confrontation. “We are amidst a celebration. Best to take care of the wretch outside, lest you want him to spoil the night meant to honor your wife.”
“What fitting guard dogs you make,” Lockwood sneered, his unkempt appearance as disgusting as the scent of his disdain. “Perhaps if you wear skirts and bow low enough, Clark will have you for his own, since you submit so pathetically in his presence.”
“Oh, I will beat you myself for such disrespect,” Mr. Lord grit out, and it took Clark grabbing him by the arm to stop him from acting on his impulses.
“Right now the only thing stopping me from ripping out your tongue is a promise I made my wife that there would be no trouble tonight,” Clark snarled, his lips curling back from his teeth in a beastly display. “Push me further and I will delight in making an exception.”
“What weakness to be swayed by an omega,” Lockwood hissed, his arrogance knowing no bounds when he raised his chin with a smirk. “I’m starting to see that the only alpha in town worth their salt is me.”
Lena could see Lockwood derived a twisted pleasure at seeing Clark so affected by his words, and she placed her hand on her mate’s arm in an attempt to temper the alpha’s roiling anger.
“Do you value your life so little that you’d make such outlandish proclamations in front of everyone?” Clark bit out, the warning of his words punctuated by the snap of his teeth.
“You do not frighten me, Clark. Now that I see how cowed you are by the warmth of an eager cunt.” Lockwood’s remark was slung at Lena with enough venom that she recoiled from it, and if Morgan and Maxwell had not seen fit to grab onto Clark by the arms, her mate would have torn out Lockwood’s throat with bare hands.
Lockwood laughed, if only because he was trying to cover the way he stepped back in cowardice. “I came here to make it known in front of all these witnesses that I am invoking my right as an alpha to challenge you.”
“Have you lost your mind along with your property?” Morgan asked, but Lockwood’s wild eyes were trained on Clark with murderous intent.
“No,” Lena gasped, her stricken face turning a ghastly shade of pale. She would have clung onto Clark if Sam and Nia hadn’t wrapped around her in horrified sympathy.
“Nobody has issued a challenge in the last eighty years,” Maxwell uttered, and Lena was lucky that arms were around her, for she worried the room was tilting.
There was a reason it was so scarcely invoked. The challenge only held two outcomes, neither of which were favorable. Either the alpha declined, and thus forfeited not only their estate, but every possession they owned, along with every member of their household—or else they accepted, which could be worse. Accepting would pit the two against one another in a public fight to the death, whereby the winner took claim of the other’s estate and all that they previously owned, including their omega and anyone who worked for them.
“What say you, Clark?” Lockwood taunted, his maniacal grin deranged as he postured. “Do you accept, or—”
“Of course I accept,” Clark hissed from between clenched rows of teeth.
”Excellent. Then I shall see myself out,” Lockwood intoned with a mocking wave. “Do make sure you rest. I’d hate to win just to have the town speculate that you weren’t in top form when the very life drains out of you.”
