The board of L-Corp was notoriously backward when it came to voting on company policy. Lena remembered how the directors had approved private jets and extravagant corporate lunches for the senior ranking officers, while at the same time refusing to instate a daycare program for the children of hardworking omegas. That had happened when Lena’s father was the President of the company, but after the passing of another decade, the board of directors continued to pride themselves on their conservative and chauvinistic views.
Not a single board member had approved of Lena taking over for her brother Lex in the role of CEO, and after three years, they still referred to her as the interim head of the company.
She had learned not to let it bother her and chose to believe that she could change their attitudes with the incredible tech she invented. Every time she held a shareholder summit, Lena managed to impress her audience with some new gadget, and that made it seem like she had earned all of the respect she deserved.
It wasn’t until one day after hosting a webinar to announce L-Corp’s latest line of robotic arms that Lena realized how utterly naïve she had been.
She returned to her office to find a forty-page document resting on her desk, which detailed all of the reasons she was unfit to be CEO. After scanning the large print, Lena poured herself a finger of Scotch.
Her choices were limited: step down and allow the board to appoint a different CEO, or otherwise fulfill certain requirements.
Lena read the paperwork twice, because she met most of the criteria listed, and it was difficult to pinpoint exactly why the board was discounting her. She only figured out what she was lacking when she decided to phone up Anthony White, one of the more trustworthy directors.
“Plain and simple: this was a family company years ago,” White drawled, and Lena could envision all of the spittle he must have been leaving on his phone. “The board wants a distinguished alpha to step in — a family person. As a single omega in her twenties, you’d have to pair yourself up with a very powerful alpha and then produce an heir before they’d even consider you.”
Lena had no idea what inspired her to blurt out Supergirl, but it was right there on the tip of her tongue as the solution to her problems.
“Supergirl—Supergirl and I have been waiting for the right time to share our relationship with the world,” Lena breathed out airlessly, and wondered if she was hyperventilating as she stood up from her desk to pace in front of her balcony window.
“You have?” Anthony asked in shock, but then he laughed like Lena’s lie made perfect sense to him. “Come to think of it, Supergirl does spend a lot of time in your office. I should have guessed that she was stopping by for more than just tip-offs and idle chit-chat.”
Lena didn’t know whether she should be insulted or relieved that Anthony was stupid enough to believe her nonsense.
“Supergirl might just be the answer to your prayers,” Anthony confided with clear excitement in his voice, and Lena could already hear him thumping at his keyboard, as if composing an immediate letter to the other board members. “Everyone loves her. That publicity alone would do wonders for our stock value.”
Lena sighed and pressed her hand against her forehead to discover that she was sweating. “Well—that’s—that’s great,” she stuttered and stared up at the sun where it was glinting off a building, so bright it could have burned her retinas. She closed her eyes and listened to Anthony’s voice, so grating and nasally as he ruined her afternoon with just a few final words.
“Listen, Lena, I need to go and take care of some things, but I think you should have nothing to worry about if you announce your engagement to Supergirl soon.”
“My engagement?” Lena squawked, but then Anthony was gone, and she was left in silence to think about the impulsive and insane story she had just told.
As of late, she and Supergirl had a strained relationship, so she couldn’t seriously entertain the prospect of sleeping with the alpha and getting pregnant with an alien-human heir. She started to choke on the deep breaths she was taking and pressed both hands to her head in an attempt to squash the panicked thoughts from her brain.
For about an hour, she slipped into a fugue state and slumped in her office chair. She developed a slight twitch in the corner of her mouth, which was the only sign that she was still functioning through her crisis.
Lena would just have to call up Anthony and correct him about the nature of her relationship with Supergirl — but if she did that, then she would have to forfeit all of her hard work at L-Corp, including some recent patents for technology that she worried would fall into the wrong hands.
Another option was to seduce Supergirl and deal with the consequences later when she was pregnant. There were plenty of times when Supergirl’s eyes wandered, and their interactions often bubbled with tension — though despite the strong possibility that Supergirl would be into having casual sex with her, Lena had no desire to deceive anyone. She wondered if Supergirl would be cooperative if she went to her and requested such a big favor. After their latest argument, the Super had been angry, and yet eager to patch things up with her.
If she had sex with Supergirl, Lena assumed it would be incredible, but the truth was that she was in love with someone else, and Supergirl was nothing like her.
Her best friend Kara was both attractive and trustworthy, which was a rare combination for Lena to ever encounter, like a one-time celestial event in eons. She had tried to drop subtle hints that she was interested in Kara as more than a friend, and although nothing came of it, she had always assumed there would be future chances.
The sudden thought of Kara had Lena reaching for her phone. Just as Lena went to press the call button, she realized her mistake and dropped it so fast the screen shattered.
“No, fuck,” Lena spat in startled dismay. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.” She grabbed the device and watched it flicker and fragment when she ran her thumb across the cracks. “Well, if this isn’t a metaphor for my entire life,” she bitterly huffed out and fought the sting of tears in her eyes.
She couldn’t call Kara, because then she would have to tell her that she had done something stupid.
How was she meant to look Kara in the eye and tell her she needed to proposition Supergirl into sleeping with her as soon as possible? Kara would think she only called to set up a meeting with the Super.
Lena wasn’t aware of the distressed pheromones she was unleashing in waves until the familiar swish of a cape and boots landing on her balcony drew her from her panic.
“Miss Luthor, is everything okay?” Supergirl asked, entering like always without waiting for an invitation. The alpha strode towards her with harsh lines of worry etched across her forehead, and she squinted when she saw the broken phone. “Has someone been bothering you?”
Lena didn’t mean to laugh. The breathy exhalation was her body's way of staving off a breakdown and she crossed her arms to appear poised and put together. “Only the board of L-Corp, and their desire to rip this company out of my skilled and capable hands.”
The lilt of her sultry voice was almost flirtatious, even amidst her on going anxiety attack, and she sucked in a steadying breath before pushing a hand to her forehead. “For all I loathe liars, it seems I’m no better myself.”
“Talk to me,” Supergirl stated, so calm and assertive as she stepped closer. “Whatever’s going on, I can help you,” she vowed sincerely, her cobalt gaze piercing straight into Lena’s soul.
A fresh wave of guilt washed over Lena and she shook her head, “I’m not so sure of that. You see, the board plans to force me out of the company, unless I start a family with a powerful alpha, and I— in a blind fit of a panic —said that I was already seeing a powerful alpha. You. Now the board expects us to announce our engagement…”
Lena trailed off as she glanced at Supergirl’s pinched expression. The heavy way the alpha exhaled was surely a sign of anger and Lena relented before she even began to find an amicable solution. “I know what I’ve done is unforgivable, and of course I’ll explain that I’m not engaged to you, which means my position here will be terminated by the end of day, I’m sure.”
Lena hopelessly looked around her office and tried to contain the sob that rose up her throat. “All I ever wanted was to do good in the world—”
“You will,” Supergirl determined with a voice of steel, her tense jaw twitching as she cleared her throat and settled her hands on her hips in that ridiculously affective hero pose. “National City needs you at the helm of L-Corp. I need you here. You’re as much a beacon of hope to these people as I am, and there’s nobody else as goodas you to lead L-Corp.”
Lena’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears and her lips parted as she took a few deep breaths. It meant a lot to hear that from Supergirl, who often seemed to doubt her intentions, and her voice trembled with emotion as she whispered, “Thank you, but without a mate by my side, the board sees me as a poor fit for the position, and I know from years of experience that it’s impossible to change their stubborn and sexist minds.”
She shuffled over to her desk and began the simple task of gathering up her tablet and other personal devices. Supergirl didn’t deserve to be guilted into helping her with her current predicament, and Lena did all she could to settle her pheromones back to normal.
Tension still wafted from Supergirl, and then she put out a hand that she waved around while interrupting Lena’s sad attempt to pack. “Look, Lena, I know we don’t always see eye to eye on every issue, but we’ve made an excellent team in the past. The board believes what you told them, so why should we contradict that?”
Lena intuited that there was at least a few reasons on Supergirl’s mind as to why they should be honest rather than lying to everyone. She could tell from Supergirl’s eyes and the small quiver in her bottom lip that the alpha had private reservations, but before Lena could ask what those were, she found herself placing her tablet back on top of her desk.
“There are safety risks to pretending to be in a relationship with me,” Supergirl reasoned with a much more sedate energy and her head down. “But I think the benefits outweigh the risks in this case.”
Lena believed they could handle the logistics of faking a relationship, though there was one very important detail that couldn’t be faked.
“The board wants me to produce an heir,” Lena intoned without blinking and hoped that her stern demeanor would stop Supergirl from making too hasty a decision. “It would be fine if pleasing the board was as simple as telling an ongoing lie, but it also involves deeds that will have consequences for both of us and for someone else.”
If Lena wasn’t mistaken, Supergirl’s mood lightened at the discussion of sex when she expected the exact opposite.
She was surprised by the way the alpha didn’t falter, and raised a dark eyebrow when it seemed like Supergirl was about to posture. Instead she watched Supergirl carefully drag a finger across her desk and walk off as she spoke. “On Krypton we used something called a Matrix to reproduce. Our biology is a very delicate thing and infertility was a problem.”
“So you’re unable to have children?” Lena asked candidly, her jaw snapping shut when she realized how much that upset her on Supergirl’s behalf. The alpha was truly the last of her kind.
“Oh, no, what I’m saying is that it would take time for us,” Supergirl murmured, her cheeks beginning to glow as bright as her cape. She avoided Lena’s eyes while she carried on, articulating her words with great care, as if she expected them to spook Lena. “You’re not Kryptonian, so interspecies breeding should prove more effective. It helped in my cousin’s case.”
Lena doubted the alpha would have lingered to chat about the particulars if this wasn’t a commitment that Supergirl was wholly willing to make. It might have all been an act of heroism, but Lena inhaled receptive pheromones that told another story and confirmed what she suspected over the years – that there was a strong sexual interest on Supergirl’s part, in spite of their tendency to argue.
“So we’ll take our time,” Lena replied and stepped around her desk to see the alpha out to the balcony. “I can induce my own heat to give us a bit of a jumpstart and then we’ll go from there. Do you have some free time any night this week?”
“Emergencies and natural disasters notwithstanding, hopefully Thursday and Saturday,” Supergirl muttered while Lena not so subtly shooed her out of the office. She turned to eye Lena with a critical squint and hesitated with a hand on the balcony railing. “I’m willing to help, Lena, but I would appreciate a heads up when you decide to make this relationship public. I need to be prepared for it as much as you do.”
She didn’t wait to get a response, and left Lena with nothing but her thoughts and conflicted feelings while she soared through the air and out of sight.
Lena had a full afternoon ahead of her, what with all of the meetings she had scheduled. She considered canceling them for the sake of her sanity, and in the end she attended just one before leaving for the day.
Around noon, she purchased a new phone and then headed over to CatCo Media to catch Kara. She bit down on her lip as she watched her best friend rush across the office with a draft of an article in her hand.
“Hey Kara,” Lena burst out with a wide grin, and then waited for Kara’s arms to be offered up before she hurried into them. She needed the hug and the moral support after the morning she had, and she held on to Kara for as long as it was socially acceptable.
“Lena, I’m so happy to see you,” Kara gushed and rubbed at her back for a moment before leading her away from the chaos of the main floor. “What brings you to CatCo?”
“Well, I was hoping to take you to lunch and ask for a favor,” Lena admitted up front and glanced down at the document in Kara’s hand in disappointment. “Unfortunately it seems like I picked a bad time to show up unannounced.”
“No!—ahm, no, that’s okay,” Kara insisted and curled the article so she could stick it into her back pocket. “I’m free. I’m all yours. Noonan’s?”
Fifteen minutes later, Lena was sitting across from Kara at their favorite table and gulping down ice water as she pondered what to say.
Every time she glanced at Kara she forced herself to smile until it became a nervous tick that she couldn’t control. She was used to being a little flustered around her friend, but this was so far out of the norm that even Kara was looking perplexed.
“Lena, is everything okay?” Kara asked when it became clear that Lena was at a loss for how to even broach the topic she wanted to discuss. “You said you wanted to ask me a favor?”
“Yes,” Lena uttered, a croak of a word that she wished she could take back if only for an extra minute to panic some more. “I just haven’t quite worked out how to do that yet.”
“Oh, well, lay it on me. I mean what are best friends for, right?” Kara laughed, her fingers catching the side of her glasses to push them into place as she smiled at Lena.
Lena had no reason to smile so softly back, but the light that surrounded Kara was infectious. She wanted to bask in it for as long as she could before she inevitably ruined their friendship and any potential relationship she secretly longed to have. As she avoided Kara’s eyes, her fingers tapped out a melody of anxiety against the table, and then she steadied herself with a much needed deep breath.
“You know how important L-Corp is to me. My vision to better the world one invention at a time…” Lena trailed off, irritated by her own speech and how it sounded more like she was at a press conference than making a confession. “And I’m ashamed of myself.”
Lena picked up her wine and drained it in one go before exhaling in a rush, “The board was making a move to force me out of my position as CEO, and instead of taking some time to form a plan, I lied my face off. I told them I’m in a relationship with Supergirl, and now National City’s hero has taken it upon herself to stand by me in this lie, even though the board expects me to produce an heir. In the span of a few hours, I’ve created a clusterfuck of magnificent proportions. And now, here I am, hoping that I’m not overstepping boundaries, because I can’t do any of this alone, Kara.”
For a peculiar and offsetting moment, Kara sat there with a dullness in her eyes and then she nodded more than once to compensate for that brief awkwardness. “You know I’ll be here for you, Lena, every — every step of the way.” She deflated in her chair, with one shoulder sinking lower than the other before she straightened back up.
Lena threw her hand across the table to rest over Kara’s and her heart leapt from joy and relief at hearing that she had her best friend’s support. “I was truly hoping you would say that, because in so many ways, I feel out of my depth. Supergirl and I have such a history of problems and trust issues. I can’t believe we’re actually going to procreate together.”
Kara winced in sympathy for Lena’s plight, and squeezed her hand just a tad harder than Lena had experienced before. She breathed in her friend’s pity and emitted her own gracious scents.
“You might be able to find some common ground now,” Kara reasoned with a small jut of her chin and eyes that gleamed with hope and encouragement. “You could work on those trust issues and maybe even begin to overcome them.”
Lena scoffed at the recommendation and came as close as she ever had to expressing her feelings for Kara. “You’re the only person or alien I trust.”
Kara looked perplexed by that, and she settled back in her seat with a furrowed brow before pointing out quietly, “You trust Sam. I know she’s in a different city, but she’s still your friend, right?”
“Yes,” Lena conceded, the tip of her tongue pressing into her lower lip as she tried to tactfully hint at her feelings. She wondered if Kara was just oblivious, or too polite to outright state she wasn’t interested in anything beyond friendship. “It’s just different with you. You were the first person to truly want to be my friend in a very long time, and sometimes I wonder how different I might have been if not for your friendship.”
“Are you kidding?” Kara laughed, her normal dorky behavior returning as she grinned and waved her hands through the air in expressive gestures. “Lena, you’re amazing, how could I not want to be your friend?”
Whatever tension surfaced between them over the talk of Supergirl melted away and Lena found herself blushing. “Oh please, the second I met you I knew you were incredible. You interviewed me better than Clark Kent did. Not many reporters can say that.”
The easy way they slipped straight into casual talk while reminiscing was exactly what Lena needed. She would have tried to keep it going if Kara hadn’t needed to get back to CatCo.
“Well, as a friend and not a reporter, I feel like I should ask if you’re really okay with this?” Kara murmured, too pure of heart to let such an important subject go. “Do you have a plan yet?”
“You mean beyond drinking myself into a stupor tonight?” Lena half laughed and then lowered her chin. She sucked on her teeth and eyed the salad on her plate distastefully, as if it was the arugula’s fault that she felt sick and not the worry that twisted her stomach. “No. I suspect the board will be pushing for some public announcement of my non-existent relationship soon. Supergirl and I will have to work the rest out.”
The rest was something Lena couldn’t bring herself to say in front of Kara, though she did manage to quip, “I guess I’ll be living every omega’s dream by Thursday, so at least there’s that.”
Except she didn’t quite make it to Thursday.
By Wednesday, there was a memo on her desk that pointed her attention to a press release authorized by one of the board members. Lena perused it while pouring some whiskey into her morning coffee and then turned on the television to hear what the news had to report.
The board had accomplished two goals with their release, which they had failed to inform Lena about prior to its wider distribution. They promoted a new line of tech devices aimed at their alien clientele, and they shared that Lena had designed it with her partner Supergirl in mind.
About ten minutes after the news networks began covering the story, Lena received an angry phone call from Alex asking for an explanation.
“Supergirl didn’t tell you or the DEO about any of this?” Lena asked in frustration, and swallowed another big gulp of coffee to prevent herself from speaking aloud any profanities. “She agreed to help me because my ability to remain on here as CEO currently depends on my relationship status. The board wanted me to find a partner, and who better in the City’s eyes than the Girl of Steel?”
“Oh, come on, omegas can handle big CEO positions and they don’t need to be attached to an alpha to do it,” Alex argued needlessly, then sighed in frustration before speaking to Supergirl in the background. “You and I need to talk. I’m just hanging up with Lena.”
Lena was relieved that the Supergirl had arrived to diffuse the problems with Alex and the DEO, but she also realized quite suddenly that she had promised to give the Super plenty of advanced notice before L-Corp made any public announcements.
As Alex hung up and then her phones began a constant ringing, Lena had a grave feeling that she had spoiled her arrangement with Supergirl before it even started.
She normally would have spent the afternoon hiding out at work after such a huge story broke, but every employee who had direct access to her now found sudden excuses to pop into her office.
By noon, Lena packed up all of her work and requested that her private driver take her home early.
“So much for being CEO,” Lena muttered as she slipped off her heels and stared at her quiet apartment. “Either way, now I can’t go to my office.”
She would need to enforce some semblance of damage control, and that led her to text Kara to ask if there was any chance she could take the lead with an interview, so she could get her fabricated side out there and put a better spin on it.
Lena stared at her phone for twenty minutes willing Kara to respond, and when her friend left it on read, a heavy dread settled in the pit of her stomach.
Kara deserved to know when the story would break just as much as Supergirl. Failure wasn’t an option in the Luthor household, and yet Lena experienced a stab of it as she masochistically turned on the TV to watch reporters and news bulletins cover her debacle.
The majority of networks were heralding them as a spectacular team, and then there were others calling out Supergirl on a bias that she protected Lena more than others in the city simply because they were together. The media storm was going to drum up hell for them both, and Lena would have poured another drink if Supergirl hadn’t landed on her balcony.
The stench of anger could have knocked her onto her knees when the alpha stalked into her apartment, and before she could even utter an apology, the Super spat out incredulously, “You don’t need a cape to see stars?”
“Admittedly not the best tag line,” Lena uttered in lieu of an explanation. She cringed when Supergirl swept her cape around in aggravation, the slap of the material loud and sharp in the otherwise quiet room.
“What happened to telling me before you went public?” Supergirl asked in exasperation, her arms thrown into the air as she paced around the room to rant, red faced and agitated as she eyed Lena in disbelief. “And now, after being ambushed—”
“Oh that’s rich coming from you!” Lena snapped instinctively, her own emotions heightening to match the Super’s rage.
“—apparently I’m endorsing this?” The alpha pointed wildly at the TV where a commercial advertising L-Corp’s latest bit of special tech, Supernova, was playing. “I—I’m a hero, and I’m not okay with being used as a marketing scheme to boost your sales!”
“Of course it offends you to have your face plastered on mytech,” Lena spat, not the least bit intimidated as she stalked over to glare up at Supergirl with her arms crossed. “Why does it not surprise me that your desire to help is limited to the bedroom? You’re happy to volunteer your Superhuman DNA, but a photo-op would be too much for you.”
It didn’t matter that Lena had been just as blindsided by how the board made the press release, or that she would never have used Supergirl’s face to promote her products on her own. She was just engaging in argument based on principle, because she felt certain that Supergirl took issue with the press release due to how it featured their logos together. The image publicly tied a Luthor to a Super, and it seemed that was the hero’s objection to it.
“I expected to be by your side at a press release, not featured as your company’s mascot!” Supergirl grit out, her nostrils flaring in anger and to subtly take in Lena’s scent. “I said I would help you so you could stay on as L-Corp's CEO. I never said I’d sell your products.”
“Fair enough.” Lena placed a hand on her hip and slowed her breaths as the atmosphere between them became heavy, and not just from their combined rage. “I’ll notify the board that you want to sign off on any endorsements, formal statements and releases in the future.”
She held her confrontational stance for a second longer, then slinked away to settle on the couch.
It would have made sense for Supergirl to fly off, and it confused Lena when the hero strolled through the apartment like she intended to stay.
“I thought you weren’t free until tomorrow,” Lena softly commented, and followed the Super with her hooded eyes. Being so emotional and furious had done curious things to her libido. She pinched her thighs together in case Supergirl picked up on that and the scent of her arousal.
“Thanks to you, the DEO has decided that my presence would just be a public distraction and I’ve been instructed to lay low for a while.” Supergirl’s remarks were more petulant than scornful, and the jut of her chin was less arrogant and more hurt than Lena would have liked to notice. “Unless something catastrophic happens, I’m supposed to stay out of sight.”
Lena could figure out what that meant. Supergirl was currently grounded and had nowhere else to go.
“I’ve often wondered what it is you do when you’re not flying around.” Lena mused, her eyes sweeping down Supergirl like she might just see the woman beneath the suit. “It’s hard to picture you doing mundane things like watering plants or wearing sweatpants. You probably don’t even own sweatpants.”
“Of course I do, how else am I supposed to binge watch the Bachelor?” Supergirl retorted so fast that Lena wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh or mock her outright for having awful taste.
Instead Lena grabbed the remote and turned the television on to an episode to keep Supergirl occupied. She attempted to get some work done while a lot of omegas in bikinis ran around on screen, flaunting themselves in front of an alpha.
For the first ten minutes, Lena was able to respond to some emails, but as the episode continued, she couldn’t help but watch certain clips.
“Oh god, please tell me that omega isn’t actually going to get into the hot tub with that complete egomaniac.” Lena snatched the remote from Supergirl’s hand to rewind it so she could listen to the omega fawn over the bachelor.
“I don’t get what they see in him, either,” Supergirl admitted, and her attention shifted to Lena when she moved closer.
Evidently the latent scent of her arousal from their argument still clung to her, because the alpha was breathing in deeper and her eyes settled on Lena’s breasts.
For a moment neither of the said anything, and Lena tried to ignore the attraction that passed between them.
“I haven’t induced my heat yet if that’s what you’re wondering,” Lena blurted in reaction to the interested pheromones Supergirl released.
She should have moved away and tried to settle their dispute from earlier. What she did instead was subtly lean forward to better show off her tits.
Supergirl’s mouth worked around words that never quite formed, and Lena got the impression that she wanted to make a suggestion about inducing it now.
“Since you’re here, I might as well—”
“Yes,” Supergirl asserted so fast that the entire mood between them changed.
The awkwardness that Lena expected to feel became a shyness under Supergirl’s intense gaze. She could feel her pulse speed up before she even ventured to get the heat inducers from her purse.
Supergirl’s eyes tracked her into the kitchen, and something as benign as swallowing down two pills with a glass of water was suddenly a flirtation. She held the hero’s stare as she placed them on her tongue, and when she gulped them both, she swore she could smell the alpha’s pride.
“We need to make some ground rules,” Lena lilted. She was feeling hot already, though that had little to do with the heat inducers and everything to do with the hunger in Supergirl’s eyes. “Obviously what we do should remain private. I don’t want anyone talking about the details of this arrangement. That being said, I don’t want this to feel clinical, but don’t demean me, either—”
“I would never,” Supergirl intoned, rising up from the couch to stride towards Lena in the kitchen with a slow and confident swagger.
Despite her better senses, Lena’s eyes went to the alpha’s skirt, but there was no sign of outward arousal yet and some tiny part of her was offended by that.
“This isn’t a relationship.
