The Christmas season was a time of wonder and peace for Lena Luthor, even though she was estranged from all of her blood relatives. She had her own little chosen family: her best friends Sam, Jack, and Jess, and ever since college they had made their own traditions. They baked cookies together, and Jess cooked them a fabulous five course meal that was a fusion of Thai, Italian, Colombian, and Indian cuisine, which covered the bases on all of their different cultures. Lena brought the booze and joked that it was her contribution as an Irishwoman.
It had taken Lena by surprise when Jess and Jack announced their engagement one year, but she didn’t expect that it would change their holiday traditions altogether.
The perfect storm of conditions occurred when Jack announced that he had a job offer in London. He and Jess made the transatlantic move, and that meant Lena and Sam were alone the next year at Christmas with her five year old daughter, Ruby.
Despite all of the differences, they had a lovely Christmas together — but the year that followed that one was much harder. Sam was in a car accident and passed away from complications at the end of August, leaving Lena all that was precious to her, including her daughter.
The grief and depression that came over Lena needed to be shoved aside, because what mattered most was taking care of Ruby and making Sam proud. She hired a part time nanny and bought a stack of books on parenting so she could learn what to do. Lena already knew what not to do from her own experiences with her mother.
Ruby had a precocious and curious nature, which one afternoon led to her walking out of Lena’s office and out into the streets of the city to do her own Christmas shopping. It was terrifying for Lena to turn around and realize the five year old was missing, but after that one big incident, she began to adapt better to her new role as Ruby’s guardian, though it was hard to deal with a demanding job and a raising child.
Lena had gotten word from her boss that she would have to work through Christmas, so she put up a tree next to her desk and wrapped some tinsel around her chair, but she knew the whole ambience of an office in a very busy tech company was the exact opposite of the type of holiday she wanted to provide for Ruby.
She stressed over it for a few weeks until finally it was the week before Christmas and Ruby was off from school. Lena attempted to do all of the things Sam would have done with her, including attend the ballet and the Christmas tree lighting, though she could sense a building discontent in Ruby.
They were both taken by surprise late one night when they returned to Lena’s apartment after work.
There was a strange little man in a bow tie waiting outside Lena’s door, who introduced himself as Winn, and explained that he was a good friend of Alexandra Danvers.
Lena had never met Alex and only knew her to be the alpha who knocked Sam up.
Winn held out an envelope addressed to Lena and explained that it was an invitation to Christmas in Belgium. “Alex would really like to meet Ruby.”
“Ruby, why don’t you go inside and pick out a Christmas cookie that this man can choke on — I mean eat—“
Lena heard the door swing open and glanced back to see Ruby stepping inside the apartment, then she set her cold eyes on Winn. “If Alex wanted to meet Ruby, maybe she should have turned up five years ago when my best friend Sam invited her along to the birth.”
“She couldn’t, unfortunately, and I know for a fact that she regrets it,” Winn emphasized and pulled open a satchel that held a Christmas present all wrapped up in ribbon. “This is for Ruby. She’s lost so much in her young life, and I just hope I can persuade you to come to Belgium this year. I’m sure it will be an improvement on whatever you have planned.”
Lena shot him an icy glare and hurried inside when she heard a loud clatter.
Ruby had dropped a plate of cookies, and she burst into tears when she looked down at all of the broken pieces.
“Oh, no—it’s okay, honey, we can make more,” Lena whispered and lifted the small girl into her arms to calm her down.
Ruby sobbed into her shoulder and clutched onto her dress. “No, I broke the special one with the snowflake that we made for mommy.”
It devastated Lena to listen to Ruby’s soft cries and hiccups. It reminded her of the time when she had broken the chain on a pretty locket that had belonged to her own mother who passed away when she was young.
She rocked Ruby and glanced around to find Alex’s present just sitting there all tied up in such a pretty bow.
“We’ll make your mommy a dozen more cookies, okay?” Lena whispered fiercely and patted Ruby’s back a few times before carrying her over to where the present was resting. “This is a present for you,” she added and sat Ruby down her lap so she could reach for the giant box.
She passed the gift into Ruby’s small hands and hoped to hell she wasn’t making the wrong choice.
Unlike most children, Ruby was careful with opening presents and pulled neatly at the bow, then tugged at the tape to see what was inside. When Ruby lifted the lid off the lovely box within, she found a beautiful, soft rabbit. It looked to be from the same expensive brand as the bear that Sam had given Ruby on her first birthday.
Ruby grabbed the rabbit and gave it a rough hug, and Lena at last breathed out a sigh of relief that the little girl’s tears were drying.
“Ruby, I want to talk to you about a very serious matter,” Lena whispered, half hoping that the child would be too distracted by the gift to listen to her.
Ruby cocked her head to the side and then nodded, “Okay.”
“We’ve been invited to Belgium this year.” Lena stared at the globe in her living room and then shifted Ruby off her lap so she could point out where it was by tracing her finger across the distance they would have to travel. “Remember how your mom told you about Alex? She’s your other parent and she would like to meet you. She apparently has a home in Belgium—”
Ruby’s eyes rounded at that and she hugged the toy rabbit closer before asking, “Do we have to go?”
Lena responded with a little too much enthusiasm, even though she had wanted to allow Ruby to have her say in the matter. “No, we don’t, we could stay here for Christmas. You already know I have to work, but we can do everything we normally do—“
Ruby furrowed her brow in a rather moody way, then firmly announced, “We’re going.”
The kid was so stern about it that Lena could have sworn she was talking to Sam.
Reaching up to grab her hand, Ruby dragged her across the apartment and into her bedroom, where she immediately started packing.
Lena didn’t know what to expect from their first meeting with Alex, but she didknow what she planned to give the alpha for Christmas. A slap across the face.
Their first class flight was scheduled for the early next morning, and Ruby curled up in bed with her, so Lena had no doubts that they wouldn't be missing it.
Around four AM, Ruby shook her awake like it was already Christmas morning, and then danced off to get dressed.
Lena fixed the girl’s hair as always, which meant that she had no time to do her own, so she just brushed it fast and left it curly. She pulled on a hat before going downstairs with Ruby to get their car to the airport.
During the flight, they watched movies, and read several picture books, and even colored in a Christmas card for Alex, which was all Ruby’s idea.
Lena began to have doubts about reuniting Ruby with the alpha who spawned and abandoned her. If the first meeting went badly, she wondered if Ruby would spend future Christmases feeling even worse, both mourning her mom and experiencing sadness over the fact that Alex wasn’t in her life.
It pissed Lena off so much that she could scarcely appreciate the scenery during their drive through the Belgium countryside.
It didn’t register at first when they arrived at their destination that the place wasn’t a simple home like she thought it would be, but a castle located on sprawling acres of snow-dusted land.
“This is amazing,” Ruby cheerfully whispered and pointed at the castle with a bright smile. “I’m getting a princess for Christmas.”
It was such a thing that only a five year old would say, and Lena couldn’t resist the small smile that tugged at just one corner of her lips. She hated that she was drawn in by the magic of the castle and all of the fluttering snowflakes that drifted around them when they exited the car. Lena glanced up at a high window to see someone waiting on them.
Even at such a distance, their eyes connected and Lena stared too long into their friendly blue.
It almost made Lena forget her plans for Alex, but when Ruby scampered off to play in the snow, and a butler came down to announce that Miss Danvers would be out to join them immediately, Lena saw her opportunity.
She was shivering from the cold, and yet she felt all warm inside as she considered her next moves, and how this would make up for all of the years that Sam suffered.
The second that Miss Danvers appeared, Lena’s nerve wavered because she was taken aback that it was the same person she had seen through the window — blonde, athletic, and hot, even in a ridiculous preppy outfit.
Lena remembered herself, and before they could shake hands, she slapped the alpha across the face.
Ruby was well away from them when it happened, and no one else witnessed it, but Lena thought it was the perfect greeting for someone who had abandoned her friend and child.
“That’s for my best friend,” Lena announced, her tone frostier than the chill air around them. “If you treat your daughter anything like you treated Sam, this won’t be the last time I slap you.”
The alpha rubbed her face, but then just stared at her, still radiating such friendliness and warmth that Lena didn’t know what to do with herself.
“Kara, your niece may want a warmer coat,” The butler called out, and Lena realized that she had made a terrible mistake.
“I’m Kara Danvers, but my sister Alex will be here soon,” the alpha clarified and put out her hand to take Lena’s, in spite of her apparent misunderstanding. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lena Luthor.”
Lena’s heart skipped when Kara kissed her knuckles and she almost tripped backwards over a snow-covered rose bush when the alpha came closer.
Suddenly a kindly looking older woman in an apron rushed from the house with a small jacket, gloves and hat for Ruby, and the same outerwear for Lena.
“I made a few assumptions about you, too. I thought you might not come prepared for our winter weather.” Kara reached out to grab the coat before Lena could bother with it herself. “Please, let me help you.”
Lena stared in heavy silence before turning around to let the charming alpha dress her, and then she trembled, but not from the cold. “Thank you.”
She slid along in the snow to lead Kara to Ruby and contemplated how best to apologize—but Kara seemed to understand that she was sorry.
“It’s okay,” Kara gently whispered as they crunched through the ice that covered the powdery snow. “You were being defensive of your friend and my niece, and I would never fault you for that.”
“It’s just that I don’t want Ruby getting hurt,” Lena insisted as she couldn’t help but think back to her own experiences. “I was impulsive about slapping you and I am sorry for that.”
Kara laughed and rubbed at her cheek again where it must have still stung. “It would have been deserved if I had been Alex. For what it’s worth, she regrets how she handled everything with Sam.”
Lena had questions about that, though her interrogation would have to wait. She saw Ruby rolling out a snowman in her new coat, and Lena hurried over to take her small hand and bring her to Kara.
“This is Kara. She’s your aunt,” Lena muttered and directed her eyes back to Kara, who walked over and bent down to Ruby’s level.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, Ruby. I hope this is the first Christmas of many that we’ll spend together.” Kara’s soft words seemed to please the child, who smiled back at the alpha and nodded.
“Will you help me build a snowman?” Ruby asked and formed a new snowball in her gloved hand to begin the snowman’s head.
“Of course. I happen to be an expert in building entire snow villages,” Kara bragged and began to show Ruby how best to roll the snow.
They spent an hour making five snow people — one for Kara, Lena, Ruby, Alex, and for Sam.
After that, Kara led them back inside to the most decadent hot chocolate Lena ever tasted. The grand hall had such high ceilings that Lena found herself staring up at them as she walked inside and to the dining room with a long polished wooden table. The silver plates on the table were real and servants hurried around the family to take their coats and to tuck them into the comfortable chairs with treats and their warm drinks.
Lena rested both of her hands on her goblet of hot chocolate, soaking in the warmth while torn between staring Kara down and checking her out.
She still wanted to do what was right by Sam, and at the same time there was an instant attraction budding between her and this foreign royal with a hot bod.
It jeopardized her plan to smile around Ruby and drop subtle threats when the kid was out of their earshot.
“These are my favorite,” Kara commented and held out a plate of cookies to her niece and to Lena. “They remind me of winter and new beginnings.”
They tasted like one of the same recipes that had Sam made, and Lena slipped away into her memories before blinking back to the present to find Kara watching her.
“The holiday season is always a time of new beginnings,” Lena muttered a bit late, then snatched another cookie off the same plate Kara had offered her. “What are you hoping to begin this year?”
“I tend to just wait and see what kinds of opportunities come my way, but I am hoping to settle down with a mate,” Kara sighed out, like she was conflicted about some aspect of that.
“I’m sure you must have plenty omegas throwing themselves at you,” Lena muttered with a curious squint of her eyes.
From the partial grimace on Kara’s lips, it was a safe bet that the alpha hadn’t found a mate she particularly cared for yet.
Lena was almost inclined to mock her for having such awful problems, what with being surrounded by such wealth and comfort, but the weary way Kara smiled gave her pause.
“What about you Lena?” Kara asked, her expressive eyes showing interest in the answer as she prompted, “What do you want to begin?”
Kara dunked a cookie into her hot chocolate, and Ruby copied her enthusiastically, her pinky raised as she bit into the treat.
Lena grinned at Ruby, her hand falling onto the girl’s shoulder instinctively to keep her close as she glanced around the lavish dining room.
“I’m not sure I want anything,” Lena informed Kara after a second’s hesitation, her teeth catching the inside of her lip to stop her tongue from saying anything else.
“So is your sister planning on meeting her daughter sometime today, or has she forgotten she invited us?” Lena asked abruptly in an attempt to stop herself from thirsting after Kara.
The touch of forced aggravation in her voice reminded her to stay alert, and she flexed her fingers as she thought of the slap she owed Alex for leaving Sam to raise a child by herself.
“She’s tending to some important business that unfortunately couldn’t be postponed,” Kara whispered, and then wet her lips in a rather distracting and attractive way. “She should arrive soon. We’re hosting a party tonight in honor of Ruby and she won’t miss it.”
Lena continued to sip her hot chocolate instead of voicing another complaint. As Kara promised, they were interrupted soon after by the sound of a motorcycle.
After a little while, an alpha with short auburn hair rushed into the dining room without decorum or announcement. “I’m so sorry I’m late. There was a security issue.” She declined to comment further on the particulars of that, and blinked over at Lena, then at Ruby.
Lena had thought she was bad with children before becoming Ruby’s guardian, and it was the terrified way that Alex froze up that made Lena wonder if the alpha had the same fears.
“I’m—I’m Alex,” she explained and thrust out a hand to her own daughter, but then dropped the formalities when Ruby launched herself into her arms.
Alex scooped the girl up with a hand at the back of her head to hold her close.
“You look just like your picture,” Ruby remarked and stared up in awe at the parent she had never met before. "Mommy showed me once."
“We should give you both the chance to get acquainted,” Kara offered and pushed back from the table to extend an arm to Lena.
“Yeah, okay, I am not leaving her alone with someone she’s barely even met.” Lena harshly enunciated her words and stepped back from Kara so she could check on Ruby.
“I’m okay, Lena,” Ruby insisted and reached out to take her hand for a few seconds before giving her full attention to Alex. “You can go play with my aunt Kara.”
Lena was embarrassed by the fact that she blushed at that suggestion, her thoughts far less innocent than Ruby’s ideas of what they could do together.
She side-eyed Kara surreptitiously and tried to bury the idea of how she might like to play with the alpha.
Lena could almost hear Sam’s voice in her head as she avoided taking Kara’s arm and fixed her gaze on the floor.
Ooh, you like her, why don’t you go for it?
Lena swept Kara’s hand aside to clear the fabrication from her mind and directed her gaze to Ruby, “Okay, but only for a little while. If you need me I’ll be—” Lena faltered, her eyes landing back on Kara for some sort of help.
“In the library, just down the hall. You can’t miss it,” Kara stated, her hopeful smile showing just enough teeth to make her appear all the more handsome.
“Right, the library,” Lena reiterated, and then walked off before she made an even bigger fool of herself. She made it to the hallway and Kara caught up as she hesitated on which direction she should go.
“Left,” Kara whispered, her private smile almost endearing as she offered Lena her arm again.
Despite her better judgment, Lena accepted it this time, and she pressed her lips together to stop herself from smiling when the alpha led her towards a large, double doored room. The inside was lined with floor to ceiling bookshelves made of rich mahogany, and the scent was both comforting and intimidating from the fragrance of imperious alphas that still lingered from previous visits.
Lena broke away from Kara the second she stepped foot inside the library, and drifted over to lightly trace her fingers over the book spines in wonder. “This is incredible,” she uttered, casting a glance over her shoulder to see the way Kara was watching her. “Why did you bring me here?”
“It’s one of my favorite rooms,” Kara supplied and wandered over to stand shoulder to shoulder with her. “It’s also one of the most tranquil, and I thought that maybe you’d like a moment to yourself.”
“Thank you,” Lena whispered in surprise and ran her hands over the old volumes on the nearest shelf. She lifted one and began to flip through the colorful pages.
The low key afternoon was just what she needed after such a long flight, and Lena sank into a big armchair to rest and read.
Kara sat close enough that Lena could breathe in the alpha’s comforting musk, and she found herself glancing up often to catch her eye. At the same time, it seemed that Kara was just as intrigued by her.
Against all logic, she felt giddy when they shared smiles, even when neither of them talked.
“I imagine you’ve read a lot of these books, since you grew up here,” Lena muttered as her pheromones invited Kara to engage, even as she groaned internally at her own behavior.
“You’re right,” Kara admitted, then made a move that Lena had no doubt was prompted by her omega scent. “I used to sit under the desk over there with all of the adventure books and hide from my math tutor.”
After plucking one of the books from the shelves, Kara brought it to Lena and dropped into the seat beside her.
Lena smirked at the illustrated and hardbound copy of The Hobbit and opened it to a page with a sketch of a dragon. She could imagine Kara pretending to be the protagonist of a fantasy novel as a child, but perhaps not one that featured a short, large-footed and hairy creature.
“You know, Sam told me a few years ago that Alex was part of some sort of royal line, but I never thought you’d actually live in an actual castle,” Lena hummed with a critical squint at Kara, who slid just a tiny bit closer to look at the pictures in the book with her.
“This is—um—it’s just the winter castle actually,” Kara admitted with a sheepish laugh and then pointed to a drawing on the wall that depicted another stunning castle. “That’s one of our summer homes.”
Kara’s modesty when discussing wealth was interesting and unexpected, and it put Lena more at ease to be in the presence of someone with such a humble attitude.
“And where will you and your mate live?” Lena asked with an inquisitive scrunch of her eyebrows as she glanced at all of the wall coverings. “I assume there’s someone in your life who you plan to marry soon, since you mentioned it’s part of your plan for the upcoming year.”
“To be honest, it’s not part of my plan, but I’m not against it,” Kara confided with a wry smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She tucked her chin towards her chest, the aroma of her pheromones shifting, though Lena couldn’t quite place the scent. “There are certain expectations that I may or may not fulfill. Which is to say, I find myself woefully dismayed by the options—”
Kara looked flustered by her own words, and Lena closed the book so she could turn to scrutinize the alpha with amusement. “Is that the polite way of saying you’re not attracted to the omegas your parents think would make a good match for you?”
The alpha exhaled a self-deprecating laugh and relaxed into the seat with a groan, “Don’t get me wrong. They’re all very lovely to look at, but there has to be more to the relationship than that.”
“And here I thought being pretty was exactly what every alpha wanted most in a mate,” Lena teased, and watched the blush on Kara’s cheeks deepen to a rouge. “What more could you possibly want?”
“The ability to hold a meaningful conversation, a sense of humor, wit, class?” Kara supplied automatically, and then her eyes widened at the slip. “Not that they lack any of those things.”
“Oh, they bore you,” Lena accused with obvious delight. There was a slight thrill to finding that out, like stumbling on a secret that she shouldn’t have known. “What kind of conversations do they try to have with you?”
Lena wasn’t normally one to pry, yet she couldn’t help the way she chewed her lip and waited for Kara to answer.
Kara gave a half shrug and then launched into a long winded explanation. “Well, there’s this one omega named Siobhan who likes to talk about her prize winning sheep, and there’s Leslie, who’s kinda on the wild side. She tried to give me a piercing the first night we met, but around my family, she’s very conservative. There’s another omega named Andrea. She already has her wedding dress all picked out—”
“And you only have three possible options?” Lena questioned as she began to feel the smallest stab of concern over Kara’s situation.
“I’m not limited to those three, but my parents have strongly encouraged me to choose a mate from a reputable family.” Kara’s joyful smile grew thin for a few moments, and she tried to laugh, covering up the emotions that would have otherwise surfaced on her face.
All of the issues that Sam had gone through with Alex suddenly made more sense to Lena, given the attitude of the family.
Lena pursed her lips together, lest she say the wrong thing, and put her hand on Kara’s shoulder. It wasn’t often that a stranger opened up so completely to her, and it was even less often that it felt natural to give comfort to that person. Her fingers moved over Kara’s arm in the lightest caress, and it brought a slight tremble and a tingle to her hand.
Get it, girl. Take her to bed. That will make her feel better.
The type of commentary Lena would have expected from Sam was in her head again.
Kara’s smile was enigmatic, and she cleared her throat when she seemed to realize that she had been staring at Lena for an inappropriate amount of time. She tipped her head to the side with a coy glance towards the doors and murmured, “Do you want a tour of the place?”
Lena rolled her shoulders noncommittally and found herself taking Kara’s arm when the alpha stood up and offered it. “I don’t suppose you have a map?” she asked innocently, her serious expression cracking when Kara’s confusion knitted her brows together. “This place is massive. I’m bound to get lost if I don’t have you guiding me down hallways.”
The sound of Kara’s laughter was entirely too pleasant to Lena’s ears, and she knew that was a sign of trouble. “Then I guess I better chaperone you all night for your own safety.”
Lena could have sworn she felt heat between them when Kara’s eyes lingered on hers, and she was pretty sure she saw the alpha’s gaze drop to her lips. “I’m sure the omegas at the party will be thrilled to have me tag along wherever you go.”
“I might be,” Kara uttered with a touch of shyness to her tone, which she masked by urging Lena along. She showed Lena different rooms that were all very specific for meetings and teas, and then led her straight to the kitchen with a roguish whisper, “My other favorite room.”
Chefs and kitchen staff were bustling around to prepare for the party, and Kara sidestepped a few to raid the walk-in fridge. She gathered up some cheese and grapes, and a few truffles that were clearly meant for the guests later before stacking them all onto a plate.
“Out,” A middle-aged woman instructed, and while Kara didn’t look the least bit intimidated, she did look apologetic. “You sneak in here whenever we have to cater for the masses, and you think I don’t notice, but I always do.”
“Astra, I’m merely taste-testing the delicious things you prepare. It’s a compliment,” Kara insisted, her mischievous behavior amusing to watch as she helped herself to a small freshly-baked bread roll and backed away before the chef could smack her hand with a wooden spoon.
Lena got the impression that Kara’s knuckles had felt the sting of that smack a lot growing up, and she hid her smile behind her hand when Kara glanced her way.
“It’s for our guest,” Kara stressed when it looked like Astra was ready to march her out of the kitchen, the same as she must have done when Kara was only a child.
Astra faltered for all of half a second as she took in Lena, then straightened up with a huff and muttered something under her breath before fetching a few slices of Yule log cake.
Lena didn’t hear what Astra said as she handed off the plate with two forks, but Kara was smiling as she walked over to present her bounty.
Kara ushered Lena out of the kitchen before Astra changed her mind.
They hurried up two flights of stairs and into a large bedroom where there was not only a canopy bed, but also tables and chairs.
“You’ll be staying in here for the duration of your trip,” Kara explained and went to open the curtains so that the afternoon light could brighten the stately space.
Lena exuded disappointment after they both settled into chairs, and Kara sat across from her instead of next to her. She saw that all of her suitcases were stacked in the corner and that most of her clothes had been hung up in the wardrobe.
“I didn’t expect you to have an entire dining room in a bedroom, but it certainly does make midnight snacking a bit easier,” Lena remarked as she pulled her slice of cake closer. She savored her first bite and Kara stared at her as she continued to suck on the fork afterwards.
That led to other considerations, like using the table for entirely different purposes, and Lena had to blink the dirty thought away. They were exchanging scents, and Kara’s was very obvious in expressing a mating interest.
Lena started to do all sorts of idiotic and smitten things, like gather the hair back from her neck and place a hand on her shoulder to keep Kara’s eyes riveted. If she had seen another omega behave that way, she would have experienced secondhand embarrassment. She was a flirtatious mess while they ate, and because of it, Kara’s alpha was aroused.
Fortunately a servant came to the door to call Kara away before Lena did something even more stupid.
“I’ll see you later at the party,” Kara assured her as she put out a hand to take Lena’s and brushed her lips across pale knuckles.
Lena flopped across her bed the second Kara was through the door, and then she popped back up to open a window. She had wanted to project the same attitude she did at work and come off as someone who was in complete control, but Kara’s presence threatened to ruin all of that.
It alarmed her when she had the urge to rub herself to the memory of Kara’s smile.
She stood next to the window huffing fresh air for a good twenty minutes and almost fell out of it when another servant knocked to give her an update on Ruby.
Everyone was preparing for the party, and the servant cleared her throat as she pointed out a dress in Lena’s closet.

It can be fun when Kara has a backbone.. something I miss about her in the show. They sorta needed to give into their feelings right away or this would have been a multi-chapter. This was beautifully written. I love how you incorporated certain aspects of the movie. I loved the instant attraction between Kara and Lena. I mean can we blame either of them? Haha. This was wonderful I especially enjoyed how Kara stood up for herself and didn’t let what happened to poor Alex and Sam happen to her and Lena. The way both Kara and finally gave into their feeling for each other and fucked it out. That was some sweet love making right there. Poor Kara still a bit of a dork when asking Lena to be her mate.
