Lena’s Google search inevitably led her to a subreddit on alphas from other planets. It took her over an hour to find anything on Kryptonians, and then a further forty five minutes to weed out the bullshit from the truth. The information was sparse, but what she did find out was enlightening.
Apparently Kryptonian alphas proved themselves by devoting their energy to pleasing a potential mate during the omega’s first heat. They had to show that they could take care of the omega’s sexual needs without being selfish. If the alpha managed to hold out on their own pleasure, the omega would decide if they wanted to grant them the right to exclusively court them. If the alpha failed, the omega could then reject them until entering another heat cycle, or accept the alpha by performing their own ritual. If the alpha failed a second time, the laws of Krypton stated no courting would be allowed between the two of them, and they would each have to find another mate.
Alphas that shamed themselves twice in pursuit of a mate forfeited their orb, and this was seen as the biggest disgrace of their honor.
Why a marble held such weight to a fully advanced society was beyond Lena’s grasp, though she was infinitely more curious as to why Kara entrusted her with such an important object.
Lena cuddled up under a blanket with Doris in her lap and spent five hours scouring the internet about Kara’s cultural customs and the absurdity of the courtships. It was hard to tell what was real by the end of her search, though Lena knew that she would do whatever it took to seduce Kara and get the fool out of her system.
By the time the sunlight filtered through her curtains, Lena had mentally prepared herself for the outrageous practices of the Kryptonian’s customs. She got dressed and packed a bag full of supplies with the intent to get to the office before anyone else did.
She fed Doris some of the kitten chow she found in a plastic bag that Kara brought over, and frowned when she noticed a box of chocolates, along with two peculiar packs of condoms. The package claimed that the condoms could prevent knotting with an extra strength band that secured around the base to stop swelling.
It went against Kryptonian custom to sleep with an omega without engaging in courtship, but this was clear evidence that Kara doubted her own abilities to resist.
That knowledge was a boost to Lena’s ego, but not enough to the point that she could stop resenting Kara. She knew it had been a cultural misunderstanding that caused most of their problems, but that didn’t explain why Kara had to pretend to be so sweet and dense.
Lena had plenty of experience with alphas, and it irritated her that Kara behaved like it was in her genuine nature to be kind and considerate. She blamed her heat and Kara’s alien pheromones for reducing her to the kind of omega that couldn’t function without getting off, and that made her hate Kara even more.
“I’m going to do things I’m not proud of today, so don’t judge me,” Lena informed Doris, who meeped and curled up against her chest. The kitten’s little paw stretched out to rest on Lena’s chin and she fought against the surge of warmth and comfort that rushed to her heart. “And don’t get comfortable,” Lena rasped thickly, “You belong with the idiot who adopted you, not here with me.”
Doris didn’t seem to give a damn that she was trying to close off her heart, and the softest purr emanated from the small ball of fluff.
Lena wrapped a scarf around herself and fashioned it into a hammock for the kitten before she hurried out of her apartment. She needed to grab a few things before work, along with at least five energy drinks, since she hadn’t slept a wink.
She stalked into Spherical Industries like a woman possessed a full half hour before the office was technically open and deployed her plan with as much accuracy as any lunatic grasping at straws.
In order to accept Kara’s courtship, she needed to bestow her own gifts in her family colors while donning Kara’s red and blue. Since Lena grew up on Earth without any colors of her own, she picked her two favorites, green and purple.
Lena deposited Doris into a cat bed she had purchased and left her on her desk while she spread out a bunch of red grapes, a few figs, and passion fruit across Kara’s desk. She placed green grapes, green apples and limes among them and then took immense delight in filling all of Kara’s drawers with purple and green paper clips and corresponding glitters. In lieu of yarn, Lena unloaded four cans of silly string all over Kara’s chair, her computer screen, and around her desk.
With that handled, Lena raced back to her own desk and began pulling on sweaters, t-shirts, and leggings. She alternated between blue, red, and yellow until she wore so much she could hardly sit down in her own seat.
When she was finished, Lena looked twice the size in her mismatched clothes, and her pale face was a ruddy shade of red from her heat combined with the exertion.
Coworkers stared at her when they began to filter into the office, and she wasn’t even through with the worst part of it yet because Kara was uncharacteristically late to arrive.
Lena still had to dance for the alpha while holding Kara’s preferred food.
It was still too early to order Chinese take-out, so she settled for purchasing a box of sticky
buns. Soup dumplings had the potential to be even more messy, but Lena ended up with glaze all over her hands before Kara showed up.
Lena’s last preparation was to pull on a long cloak she bought from a costume shop because it resembled what omegas wore on Krypton. The sleeves were so long that they flapped around her like bird wings when she started performing the only dance she knew. She balled her hands into fists while moving her arms back and forth.
The embarrassing silence that came over the room was too much for her, and she had to drop a sticky bun to enact her contingency plan.
She had borrowed Jack’s iPod earlier that morning, along with his mini speaker, and she pressed the shuffle option as she noticed Kara’s bright and delighted eyes land on her.
It was too late to back down now, and she began to shimmy again as the music blared Shake that ass for me, shake that ass for me, c’mon girl.
Lena saw Andrea mouth “Is she drunk?” and James’ face as it screwed up with laughter.
Jack rushed out of his office and stopped short when he spotted his devices in the mix of Lena’s humiliating demonstration.
She tried to turn off the iPod, but instead it switched to a Cardi B song, and Lena continued to shake her hips to Certified freak, Seven days a week, Wet ass pussy.
To finish off the entire ordeal, Cat Grant stepped off of the elevator at the same time and lowered her sunglasses to glance around at the mess and at Spherical Industries’ two top scientists, who were at the center of it all.
Kara barely had the chance to appreciate the horrific outfit Lena wore, though she did manage a quiet growl before Jack marched over in a cross mood.
“Kara, you have a ten o’clock meeting with Miss Grant, and Lena, I’d like to see you in my office.” Jack’s tone brooked no room for argument, and he lifted an empty can of silly string from the desk before stalking off.
Lena cringed at the scent of embarrassment that Jack leaked through the office, and trailed after him to avoid further scrutiny from her coworkers. She had only stepped foot through the door when Jack slammed it shut behind her and hissed incredulously, “What the hell was that? If we lose Cat Grant as an investor because you’re high—”
“I’m not high,” Lena spat back, and dropped a sticky bun in Jack’s wastepaper trash so she could tug off her stupid cloak.
“I was—it’s Kryptonian culture to welcome Kara,” Lena blurted, her mortification compelling her to find some sort of reasonable excuse before Jack fired her for such inappropriate behavior.
“You’re trying to bullshit me,” Jack began, his critical eyes finally noting the excessive number of shirts she was wearing. “Why are you wearing a week's worth of clothes?”
“I told you, it’s a cultural thing,” Lena stressed, half tangling herself in a sweater as she pulled it over her head and flung it at her feet. “Are you forgetting the other week when Kara decorated my entire desk with yarn and filled my drawers with other people's stuff?”
Jack’s perplexed frown culminated in an aggravated huff, and Lena seized her opportunity to carry on uninterrupted. “You told me to make her feel welcome. You pushed us to be lab partners, and I’ve spent weeks trying to understand all of her strange customs.”
That was hardly a lie, and Lena squared her jaw to defiantly glare up at Jack. “All of this is part of Kara’s culture to — to ask for permission to work with an omega who isn’t her mate. If I didn’t reciprocate all of her weird behavior, she’d have to work somewhere else.”
Lena was on a roll, and she was fired up enough from the humiliation to take it a step further and put Jack on the spot like he was the one acting crazy. “Is that what you want, to lose our alien to another company? Because if Kara walks out, I’m pretty sure Cat Grant will follow her. If you don’t believe me, go and ask Kara how she feels about all of this.”
Jack gaped at her in mind boggled silence and tossed his iPod onto his chair before high-tailing it through the office in search of Kara.
Lena used the privacy of Jack’s suite to shed all of the extra clothes, and when she hurried after her boss, she was much cooler in a pair of tight blue jeans and a red blouse with a low neckline.
Fortunately Cat Grant had already left, and Kara was alone in the lab sitting in front of one of the larger machines.
“Kara, how did it go with Cat?” Jack asked as he slid into the seat beside her and glanced up at Lena, as if he was going to find out she was a liar.
“She’s very pleased with our progress,” Kara reported with a nod, though her attention kept drifting to Lena and she stared open-mouthed at the color combination she wore.
“And how do you feel about working with Lena on all of these projects?” Jack pressed, a little calmer now that he knew his investment funds were secure. “Do you feel good about your partnership?”
“Our partnership?” Kara blurted with embarrassing swiftness, and Lena could see the exact moment that the Kryptonian misinterpreted the question. “Lena is the perfect partner. She’s so giving and eager to please, but it’s important we take everything slow and stick to the traditions.”
“And your cultural traditions include dressing up like you’re going on a high altitude hike while gorging yourself on sticky buns?” Jack questioned with a smile as he casually propped his elbow on the back of a chair. “I would love to be able to dictate what an omega wears to work, but then HR would get involved.”
Kara laughed at Jack’s stupid questions like he had told the funniest joke, yet her gaze remained on Lena, even as she corrected him. “Only an omega who accepts a partnership with an alpha wears clothes to represent the alpha’s house. The gift of food is the same on your planet. It’s a welcoming gesture.”
“Huh. I’ll be honest, I thought Lena was—well—not in her right mind this morning..” Jack confided like she wasn’t standing there glaring right at him. “Most people don’t dance in their workplace wearing half their closet, but if it’s secured your position with Lena—”
“Oh, it has,” Kara rambled enthusiastically, “I’m so happy, and we’ll continue to work on our—”
“Project with the nanobots, yes, fantastic,” Jack cut her off in relief and stood up to warily clap Lena on the shoulder. He walked her over to the door while he lowered his voice and murmured, “Look, I’m sorry I doubted you, but I’ll let everyone know that you just secured Kara’s position here with us.”
Without the extra clothes, the scent of Lena’s heat was wafting in the air, and from the way Jack was staring down her top, it was clear that it affected him.
“Great, well I better get back to work, and you should go inform everyone that I’ve earned a bonus for being brilliant,” Lena intoned.
“Right you are,” Jack laughed, his hand moving to Lena’s lower back before he caught himself and hurried out of the lab.
Lena locked the door behind him and prepared herself to be as sweet as pie as she turned to smile at Kara. She could smell success drifting between them, strong alpha pheromones of attraction, and she was prepared to break their sexual tension right then and there if Kara said the word. Her expectations were soaring when they shared another smile, and she blushed as she took the seat next to the Kryptonian.

“We’re going to need more than one if we’re finally doing this,” Lena whispered, her full lips poised to give more than a compelling argument.
She was considering taking off the rest of her clothes when Kara pulled out an iPhone and began texting someone. Before Lena could complain about Kara’s rudeness, the alpha bashfully turned the screen to show her a message.
“I texted my Earth family and they will meet you tonight,” Kara announced with an adorable, proud smile, then slipped her arm around Lena. “It’s the most important part of our courtship. Even though you can’t meet my Kryptonian family, I can still honor you this way.”
Lena nodded along like she understood the weird ins-and-outs of Kryptonian dating. “Honor me. Right.”
A protest formed on the tip of Lena’s tongue about how she would like to progress in a more carnal way. She would have uttered it had Kara not put her phone down to clasp her by the jaw and turn Lena towards her for a kiss.

“Her name is Doris and I fed her this morning,” Lena snapped.
She would have rushed to rescue the kitten from Andrea’s clutches if not for the fact that she was loath to acknowledge that Doris belonged to her.
It irritated her how Kara jumped up from her seat to speak with Andrea, and how she opened a bag to pull out a container of cookies, which she promptly handed over to the other omega.
“I baked these last night with your recipe,” Kara cheerfully exclaimed and gripped the frame of her glasses to push them back on her face. “They were so amazing that I wanted you to try some.”
Lena simmered with jealousy as Andrea reached out to brush her hand down Kara’s arm. Her bitterness curled her lips downward into a sneer and she knocked back the chair she was sitting in as she stood up.
“Kara, I’m going to check on our kitten.” Lena used a tone of voice that implied that Kara should join her. If that wasn’t enough for the Kryptonian to get the hint, she hooked their arms together.
She managed two steps before her momentum ended, since Kara was as solid as an anchor, and even when she tugged the alpha’s arm, the Kryptonian didn’t seem to budge. It would have been humiliating if Kara hadn’t handed off the whole box of treats and then decided to follow her, but Andrea had witnessed the debacle and was smirking around a mouthful of cookie.
The other omega moaned provocatively, but Kara was already dragging Lena away from the lab to find Doris.
Lena bit back the irrational urge to flip Andrea off and tell her that she hoped she choked. The feeling appeared mutual, because Andrea’s pheromones were gloating and her eyes were narrowed.
Lena was pulled out of her thoughts when Kara murmured sweetly, “Kir :bysh, nahn rrip voi?”
Lena frowned at the alpha, her face softening when Kara untangled their arms to pick Doris up with a gentle hand.
The kitten gave an almost silent meep, and Kara nodded like she understood her perfectly as she lowered her face so Doris could press her forehead against Kara’s in greeting.
It was the first time Lena had wanted to understand Kryptonese, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the way Kara’s face lit up when she used it with Doris.
“What did you say?” Lena whispered so as not to intrude on the moment, but Kara just smiled and held Doris out to allow her to pet the kitten.
There was something soft and as sweet as a marshmallow transpiring between them, and Lena instinctively stepped back with an excuse to return to work on her lips.
She never managed to say what she intended, because she collided with a solid object, and then James’ low rumble met her ears. He steadied her with a not so innocent hand on her hip that moved towards her ass.
“Lena, you never returned my calls last night,” James stated, his deep baritone sending a shiver of revulsion down her spine.
She moved out of his grasp before his fingers could travel lower, and forced herself to smile as she snapped, “Then I must have been busy.”
Kara’s cheeks darkened to a shade of red and she forced a smile of self-restraint onto her face. Lena noticed it out of the corner of one eye and how Kara’s hand was flexing when James reached out to touch her shoulder.
“I know your heat is really getting to you,” James commented, much quieter this time, as if he actually cared about Lena’s privacy. “I thought this might help.” He held out his jersey for the company’s basketball team, which was covered in his egotistical alpha reek.
Lena took the jersey awkwardly, but kept it far away from her body so as not to transfer any of James’ pheromones onto her.
“I was thinking you could wear it to bed,” James explained with a concerned squint and Lena swiveled to stop him from touching her some more.
“That’s very generous of you, but I don’t need an alpha to get through my heat,” Lena growled through her teeth, though she wanted to take it all back when she glanced over at Kara.
She did need a fucking alpha, and she was furious about that, because she knew that lurking somewhere underneath all of that cuddly and kind behavior, Kara was just like James. Every alpha had the same attitude at the core of it, and Lena shoved the jersey into Kara’s hands before stealing Doris and carrying the small kitten back to her desk.
“Wow, it must be the peak day of her heat cycle,” James chuckled, loud enough that Lena could hear how he was trying to buddy up to Kara. “Every omega likes to deny it, but only an alpha can make them feel better when they’re all hormonal and moody.”
Lena glared at them and stroked Doris’ fluff for comfort.
“Oh, well, I think Lena knows herself more than we do,” Kara commented while she handed James his jersey and moved to her desk with a curious glance at Lena.
James seemed baffled by Kara’s statement and laughed about it as he walked off. “You’re not used to human omegas yet. Trust me, stay out of her way, or she’ll have you strung up by your knot before the end of the day.”
Kara’s perplexed frown was almost comical, and Lena might have enjoyed it if she wasn’t so busy glowering at James for being such an asshole.
She mindlessly kissed the top of Doris’s head and cradled her against her chest as she turned her attention back to her work. Not that she was particularly focused, because even from across the room, Lena could smell Kara’s alpha musk.
Lena breathed it in as subtly as she could and used every ounce of her willpower to ignore the alpha, who kept sending her soft smiles whenever she dared to glance her way.
By the end of their working hours, Lena was ravenous for more than just sex, and lamented the fact that she had refused to go to lunch due to James leering at her as he walked past. She bundled Doris into her scarf and met Kara in the elevator, her heart thumping when the alpha leaned in and brought a hand up to fondle her tits.
It took Lena a belated second to realize it was actually Doris that Kara was petting, and not her breasts, and she laughed awkwardly as her frustrated scent filled the enclosed space.
“We’ll need to hide her in the restaurant,” Kara murmured secretively, and scooped Doris up to settle the tiny kitten inside her jacket pocket.
“Wait, I’m really meeting your Earth family tonight?” Lena hissed. Her irritability had to do with sudden nervousness and the fact that she was still dressed in an outfit she hated.
“Yes, right now. My Alex texted to say they are at the restaurant already,” Kara joyfully stated.
If there weren’t witnesses crammed into the elevator, Lena might have killed her for not giving her any time to prepare.
In a fit of anxiety, Lena elbowed her way to one of the reflective walls and applied a fresh coat of lipstick and eyeliner. She spritzed herself with perfume, and consequently the man standing closest to her, then brushed her hair before the doors opened and everyone rushed out of the building.
“Next time give a girl some warning. I’m not even dressed for this,” Lena huffed, the furrow of her brow deepening when Kara grinned. “This isn’t funny. You’re lucky I even had make-up in my bag.”
“You are wearing my colors, and they suit you so well,” Kara pointed out with pride, and Lena got the impression she could have been wearing anything, provided the fabrics mixed red with blue.
“They’ll look nice on your bedroom floor,” Lena muttered under her breath as she followed Kara out through the lobby and down the street to a Japanese noodle bar.
At that time of day, they had to walk through throngs of people that were either heading home or out to enjoy the local nightlife.
“I would like to meet your family soon,” Kara remarked during the short stroll, and Lena panicked at the idea of her mother sitting down to dinner with the Kryptonian, or participating in any part of their courtship ritual.
“I have plans that day.” Lena lied outright, her eyes wide with terror when she imagined Lillian in one of the bizarre three-piece suits that Kryptonians wore for special occasions.
“Which day?” Kara asked, catching Lena’s slip-up as she held open the door to the restaurant.
“Sund—Sanat-turday,” Lena uttered with a hand in the air and a smile that overcompensated for her ridiculousness.
She was grateful that they had arrived and Kara ushered her to a table where Alex was waiting with an alpha who must have been her partner. They both turned to look at Lena as she scooted down a row of bench seats.
None of Lena’s past dates ever introduced her to their family, and she forgot her manners for a second while they stared at her.
“Hi, I’m Lena Luthor,” she blurted out at a delay and greeted them with a hand shake. “I’m Kara’s—Kara’s friend.”
“Kelly,” the alpha intoned and smiled at Lena and Kara with friendliness in her eyes.
“Lena is the omega from Kara’s work,” Alex clarified, as if that reference would help Kelly piece together who Lena was from stories Kara had told about her.
“The one who gave her the recipe for the cookies?” Kelly questioned expectantly, and Lena went tense as she pictured Kara’s family gathered around and enjoying Andrea’s baked goods.
“The one who made the cupcakes to welcome Kara,” Alex whispered, instantly dashing all of Lena’s hopes of making a good first impression.
“Oh, right,” Kelly breathed out, and from the look on her face, she had evidently tasted how bland and unappealing they were without any flavoring. “Those were, um, very moist,” she intoned in an attempt to say something nice about the awful cupcakes.
“I forgot the vanilla extract,” Lena heard herself say, and if her mortification wasn’t bad enough, she carried on by mumbling, “but Kara’s tasted other things of mine and she seemed to enjoy it.”
Kara didn’t even pause as she laughed and nodded along with pride. When it seemed like she might open her mouth and announce that it wasn’t food she had tasted, Lena grabbed her thigh under the table and choked on her own distressed pheromones.
“Do you need some water?” Kelly asked kindly and waved down a waiter to order a pitcher for the table.
“Kara told us all about you,” Alex stated with a curious squint, as if she was just now realizing they had met once before. “In fact, you’ve been the highlight of her day since she started at Spherical Industries.”
“Really?” Lena asked, baffled by the way that Kara’s ears turned a guilty pink when she peered over at the alpha. “What makes you say that?”
“We should be ordering the food now,” Kara insisted, thrusting a menu into Alex’s hand so fast that if Lena had blinked she would have missed it.
Kara’s attempt to change the topic fueled Lena’s curiosity, and she raised an eyebrow at Alex in a silent question. There was no way Kara had shared the intimate details of how they had fooled around, or so Lena hoped as Alex shared a look with Kelly and cleared her throat.
“You’re the only thing she talks about when she comes home from work,” Alex explained with a smirk aimed at Kara, who looked flustered by the announcement.
“I talk about other things, too,” Kara argued, though when Alex paused to let her elaborate, she could only sputter out, “Like our inventions—”
To save Kara from the embarrassment of trying to come up with a topic, Kelly piped up with a question of her own. “So, Lena, not a fan of geodes?”
“Not when they take up the entirety of my desk, but it was a very sweet gesture,” Lena muttered, and then reached for the jug of water to fill her glass just for the excuse of gulping something down.
She wondered if Kelly and Alex were planning to interrogate her all night long, or if they would somehow express disapproval of her relationship with Kara. That could bring a halt to Lena’s after dinner plans, and the more she dwelled on that possibility, the more she pondered how to charm everyone.
Her soft dimpled smiles were genuine when Kara reached out to take her hand, but she knew she would have to try hard to win Alex over. It brought her back to her childhood when none of the kids in her class had liked her, either because of her wealthy family or because she always had the answers to the teacher’s questions.
Alex was like the kid at the lunch table whose opinion counted the most, and she was studying Lena with suspicious, narrowed eyes.
“We heard about your work on the nanobee, and about all of the triumphs and hazards that go with it.” Alex’s remarks were cunning, and a subtle way of letting Lena know she was aware of the nanobee attack she launched and her frequent competitiveness. “How do you plan to handle your partnership at work if the two of you decide to date? Isn’t that against company policy?”
Lena laughed involuntarily and spat out the wrong response. “No. Our boss sexually harasses me all of the time, so it’s safe to say HR has no problems with interoffice relationships.”
“He sexually harasses you?” Kelly asked, clearly appalled by Lena’s blunt honesty.
“I mean—yeah, but isn’t that just typical alpha behavior in the workplace?” Lena mumbled, glancing back and forth between Kelly and Alex and realizing that she messed up.
