Kara was just in the middle of placing Doris safely in her pocket when she hesitated. “But Doris can stay in our room.”

It turned out they were late to work, but not late enough to miss Jack handing out the bright colored badges that placed Lena on a separate team from Kara. “Here you go, one for you – and one for you.”
A week ago, she would have relished the chance to compete against the big dumb alpha, and now she was sulking as Kara wandered over to join her new teammates.
On Lena’s green team, there was Jack, Winn, Benjamin and Kate – and on the yellow team, there was Kara, James, Andrea, Barry and Mike.
“I thought this entire experience was about joining us together as a team, not pitting us against one another,” Lena huffed and glared at her boss, whose mouth was full of bagel.
Jack blinked at her like she needed to take a heat-soothing pill pronto. He wrapped up his bagel and then fell in beside her as they walked towards the bus. “I know you aren’t in the best mood right now because it’s that special time when you might need a little more TLC, but please just try to be open-minded about these exercises. We’re going to start out as competitors and leave the retreat with a whole new sense of camaraderie, I promise you.”
“Yeah, whatever, you have cream cheese on your face,” Lena pointed out gleefully, then frowned when Jack only squinted back at her.
“So do you, or else it’s some kind of glaze. Did you have a donut?” Jack asked, his eyebrows ruffling in confusion, like he was trying to remember if Lena took anything from their breakfast spread.
Lena rubbed her fingers over her chin and tried not to blush as she thought back to the last thing she had in her mouth.
She boarded the bus just in time to avoid scrutiny and hurried into a seat with Winn, since they were segregated by team until they arrived at their destination. In the seat ahead of her, Andrea was just settling in with Kara.
Lena thought she could handle that until Kara brought out Doris and let Andrea pet the kitten’s fluffy back.
She was seized with something suspiciously akin to jealousy, though she was more comfortable thinking of it as pure loathing. As Andrea cooed at Doris, Lena stood up as if to act on it.
Fortunately Benjamin blocked the aisle to let Kate into the seat next to him, and Lena huffed as her rage simmered back down to annoyance.
Jack shot her a concerned look that she pointedly ignored, and Winn, the only beta of the group, piped up with, “I used to get motion sickness too, but sucking on something helps.”
Lena was appalled that her omega considered that a reason to unleash distressed pheromones, which caused Kara to swivel around in her chair.
Winn offered her a sympathetic smile and held out a packet of Life Savers. “I don’t mind sharing.”
“I do,” Lena grumbled under her breath, accepting one of the hard candies as she glared at the back of Andrea’s head through the seats.

Every few minutes Andrea laughed and the sound of it was starting to grate on Lena’s nerves. After the fifth unreasonably loud giggle, Lena exhaled a scoff and turned to Winn to confide snidely, “I think working in the lab has affected Andrea’s mind. Nothing Kara says is that funny.”
Winn was too polite to say anything in return, but the uncomfortable way he shifted was evident. Not that Lena cared when she was entirely too focused on the fact that Andrea had whipped out a box and was offering the contents to Kara.

Lena lurched forward to press her face into the seat cushions to try and get a better look.
“Are those empanadas?” Lena gasped, her heart racing when Kara picked not one, but two that she eagerly crammed into her face, three bites a piece.

Lena almost shattered her screen, and spent the rest of the ride dreaming about ending Andrea’s life and dumping her body in whatever forest they were likely headed into for the duration of the trip.

Jack informed them all that they were supposed to gather in the concourse after dropping their belongings off in their rooms.

“This is for you,” Kara gestured with a heart melting smile and held out a Tupperware containing a purple gelatinous substance. “I wanted to do something nice for you after the incredible weekend we spent together.”
“When did you have time to make me Jello shots?” Lena intoned and almost jumped out of her skin as she popped the lid on the Tupperware and the Jello began to move.
“It’s ambrosia of Krypton,” Kara reported with a happy little shrug, and for a change Lena knew exactly what the alpha was talking about because she had read an obscure article on this aspect of Kryptonian customs.
Kryptonian ambrosia was a gift that alphas bestowed on their omegas and it was the next step after the initial courtship.
“Bottom’s up then,” Lena cheerfully stated and flung the lid off the Tupperware to taste the odd Jello.
It had a citrus flavor, and after swallowing most of it down, Lena remembered that the food was meant to heighten the alpha and omega connection.
Kara lavished kisses on her afterwards and pulled her onto the bed for a few minutes to cuddle with Doris.
Lena felt so soft from the stupid Jello shot that she moved to open up Kara’s pants, and she got halfway through the process before Jack knocked on the door.
“Kara, are you in there?” He called out and waited a second before adding, “I wanted to give you the same heads’ up I gave the rest of your team. I think it would be wise if we all go a little easier on Lena today.”
Lena strolled over to the door and opened it fast just to frighten her boss into stumbling backwards over himself.
“You know, it’s so typical of you to tell everyone to tiptoe around me just because I’m in heat,” Lena practically growled as her competitive spirit came to the fore. “I can do anything the rest of you can do, and I’m sure Andrea is just as insulted by this nonsense.”
Jack looked perplexed and took a moment to compose himself before clearing his throat to inform Lena candidly, “Actually, it was Andrea’s idea.”
Lena groaned in frustration and resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she stormed out of the room. “Of course it was.”
That bitch would do anything to undermine her, and Lena silently fumed at Andrea’s audacity. “Well, you can tell her team they had better be ready, because we’re coming for them.”
Jack gulped at the fierceness of her words and nodded sharply like he had no idea how to handle the problem he had caused by taking Andrea’s advice.
“Right, well,” Jack uttered, clapping his hands in an attempt to break the tension between them as he smiled. “Everyone’s meeting downstairs, so I’ll just make it clear that you’re more than capable of handling the stiff—”
Lena shot a glare at him when his eyes darted to her breasts, and he spat out the rest of his sentence so fast that it ran together. “competition. Okaygreattalkseeyoudownthereguys.”
She was tempted to call after him until Kara rumbled softly and suddenly the tension in Lena’s shoulders redistributed much lower. Several buttons on her shirt were undone, and Lena exuded confidence as if she had been the one to open them as some sort of statement. Little did her team know that Kara had been intent on squeezing her tits as she pushed her tongue into Lena’s mouth in the hallway.
She could feel Kara’s presence even when they were separated, like the alpha was standing behind her, despite being across the room in plain sight with Andrea already sidling up to her with a coy smirk on her lips.
Lena snarled under her breath, and Benjamin mistook it for team spirit and joined in with a grin until Jack coughed and shook his head. “Now the point of this isn’t to get aggressive, but to work to our strengths and understand that we fail and succeed together.”
“Yeah, we got it,” James drawled, posturing just enough to get Lena’s attention without being overbearing in his attempts.
“Okay, well, each team needs to appoint a leader—”
“I call it,” Lena yelled before anyone else on her team had the chance to nominate themselves. She eyed Jack with a defiant lift of her chin, daring him to pick someone else, and smirked when he didn’t.
“Then I guess I should be the leader of our team,” Andrea lilted with a sly smile, her gaze flicking to Kara so that the Kryptonian would nod in agreement.
“Battle of the omegas,” Mike laughed suggestively and nudged James with his elbow. “We might actually have fun after all.”
The first group challenge was set up outside in the trees as an obstacle course.
Lena yoinked her team banner out of Jack’s clumsy hands and led the way up the path ahead of everyone else. She figured that the sooner her team conquered Andrea’s, the sooner she would be able to return to her room with Kara.
“The goal of this activity is to get everyone across to the other side and to grab all of the flags of your team color on the way over,” Jack announced, as though a bunch of respected engineers couldn’t have worked that out for themselves based on the layout of the course. “The team to do it the fastest is the winner.”
Lena assessed that her team was lacking the muscle of Andrea’s group, but that Winn and Kate would be better suited to some of the tasks that required more agility.
“I’m assigning each of you a particular flag to worry about,” Lena whispered when she brought the group together for a huddle, and then she cast a covert glance in Andrea’s direction. “But I also want you to sabotage the other players.”
“Lena, that really isn’t in the spirit of good sportsmanship.” Jack frowned at her in concern, and it made Lena’s resolve falter if only because it had been a while since she slipped into self-reflection.
Lena had always played fair and went through life with the best of intentions, but as she noted the scheming look on Andrea’s face, she determined that this was no time to be soft.
“Are you all forgetting how Andrea got the CEO of Leviathan Tech drunk so she could scoop the design of that SmartHome gadget they developed last year? Or how she hired that loud-mouthed intern with prior experience at Lord Technologies just so she could pump him for information?” Lena stirred up the competitive attitudes of everyone on her team by just pointing out the truth. “Andrea is ruthless, and she has more brawn on her side, so you had better listen to me if you want to win.”
“The obstacle course is meant to foster communication and make us realize that we are much better off working together than we are when trying to get by separately,” Jack intoned in a whisper, his lips barely moving underneath his beard. “What will any of us learn from this now?”
“Oh, I’ve already learned the importance of not dividing our group based on some arbitrary factor,” Winn scoffed as he glanced between the omegas and alphas in clear disdain for Jack’s way of handling Lena’s heat by treating her differently.
Lena had her own ideas as she side eyed Andrea, and how she whispered to Kara specifically. “The lesson is that if you want to succeed, you need to know your competition better than they know themselves.”
She broke the group with that message and stalked towards the course.
Two of the facilitators who worked on-site came over to begin harnessing Lena’s colleagues into safety suits attached to long ropes.
The steps up to the rope bridge weren’t steep by any means, but once everyone was on the platform twenty feet off the ground, it was certainly daunting.
The rope bridge forked in two different directions, with green and yellow flags interspersed on either side. It was a crafty way to ensure the teams would have to split up to get their respective flags, and Lena shot a scathing look towards Andrea when the omega held onto Kara’s forearm to keep steady.
“Okay, everyone take a nice, deep breath, and prepare yourself for the exhilarating experience of team building!” Jack called out with far too much enthusiasm for someone who could easily be shoved off a ledge.
Lena was sorely tempted to push him over when he turned to her expectantly and let his eyes drop down to her tits again.
“Well fearless leader, who should take which path?” Jack asked with an amused quirk to the corner of his mouth, as if the thought of her leading anybody was laughable in her current state.
Lena took it personally, and enacted revenge by pointing to the right side that seemed to have footholes going up the sides of platforms to higher levels.
“You can start over there.” Lena’s cold tone froze the warmth of Jack’s smile and he pursed his lips like he might argue. “You have a long reach. It’ll be easier for you. You can take Benjamin with you.”
Jack seemed devastated until Benjamin clapped him on the shoulder and bragged, “She knows we’re the best guys to get the hardest flags.”
“You’re right about that,” Jack laughed, his bravado wavering when he rushed over to take the initial step onto the rope. James, Mike and Barry all took the same route, some with more grace than others.
That pitted Andrea and Kara against the rest of Lena’s team on the left rope bridge.
“Okay we’ve got this. Now move before they beat us to the bridge,” Lena encouraged the rest of her team and hurried towards the rope steps.
Kara moved quickest and got there first, then Kate took second place.
“Looks like you might be carrying some dead weight,” Andrea whispered as she elbowed by Lena and pointed over her shoulder.
Lena turned to find Winn clinging to his own safety harness and sighed as she moved back to get him.
“We all need to make it across to win this,” Lena muttered in annoyance, and dragged him by the arm towards the bridge.
“Wait, wait, I’m not good with heights,” Winn protested, his feet barely landing on the rope before he latched around Lena like a spider monkey and rocked the whole bridge violently. His terrified scream was more high pitched than any omega’s and Lena tried to pry him off as she hissed, “Let go of me, or we’ll fall!”
“No please, please, I can’t — don’t leave me here.” Winn wailed, his panicked breaths so loud that Lena could barely hear Andrea laughing at them.
“I’m not leaving you,” Lena grit out, her legs wobbling under her as the bridge swung back and forth like a death trap. “Winn? Winn!” Lena snapped when the beta continued to whine in terror. “Close your eyes.”
“Are you crazy? I’m not doing that!” Winn spat, so close to hyperventilating that Lena seriously considered letting it happen so that he would just topple off.
“I’m your only hope of getting across this, so do as I say, and close your damn eyes,” Lena insisted, her tone softening when he actually did it. “Okay, good, now put your hands on my hips—I said hips—” Lena yelled incredulously when Winn’s hands settled just below her tits.
“Sorry, sorry, blind,” Winn muttered, and winced when Lena shoved them into a better, safer place.
“We’ve worked together for a few years now,” Lena stated conversationally and took a step forward to see that the rest of her team was halfway across already. “But I hardly know anything about you. What are those little things you keep on your desk?”
“Oh, those are Funko Pops—uh—just silly collectables from movies and shows and stuff,” Winn explained, his embarrassed tone far better than his terrified one.
“Cool, why don’t you tell me which ones you’ve collected?” Lena prompted, keeping her eyes dead ahead with every careful step she took.
She was oblivious to the way Jack and Kara seemed to be observing her, or the way they both forgot what they were doing as a smile spread across their lips.
“I have practically everything from DC, Marvel and Star Wars,” Winn rushed out with a big gasping breath, and then started to tell her about particular rare figures he had collected as Lena snatched down two of their green flags.
With the beta on her back in full-on distraction, Lena was able to set her sights on Andrea, who was just ahead and tucking a yellow flag into her belt.
“Must be hard having to carry your team, huh?” Andrea taunted while Winn whined pathetically and tightened his grip on Lena. The smug omega glanced up to where Kara was ascending the branches and grabbing flags with the ease of a trained acrobat, a stark contrast to the way Winn couldn’t move without clinging to Lena.
“She says like Kara isn’t singlehandedly carrying her team,” Lena drawled sarcastically to Winn as she noticed that the majority of the yellow team’s flags were tucked into Kara’s belt.
“If I get my way, that’s not all the Kryptonian will be doing for me,” Andrea crooned and emitted pheromones that made her intent perfectly clear. “But both involve her very muscular arms.”
The suggestiveness to Andrea’s statement instantly caused Lena to bristle, and she swallowed around the urge to tell her colleague to go fuck herself. “Well I’m sure if you ask nicely, most of us here would gladly put you in a choke hold. Not just Kara.”
Lena didn’t stick around to exchange petty insults with the other omega and hurried to grab two more flags before taking Winn to the end of the course.
It would take longer to collect all of the flags with him attached to her, and he cried out in relief when he was back on the solid platform.
Jack had abandoned the game entirely after dropping a shoe into the net below. He arrived just behind them with more leaves in his hair than flags in his hand and passed them all over to Winn with a huff. “Here’s my contribution.”
“Jack, you had better turn around and get back out there,” Lena commanded and put out both of her hands as she considered forcing him.
“What really is the point when we can both see that Kara is the most adept at this anti-gravity activity?” Jack gestured at where Kara was hanging upside down with her legs wrapped around a branch to snatch a flag that was perfectly accessible from another point of the course. “She’s like freaking Spiderwoman. No one has the stamina to keep up with her.”
“With that kind of attitude, it’s hard to believe you’re the CEO of our company and not some back office clerk,” Lena snapped and pushed him aside with the plan to go after all of the flags that were more challenging.
Benjamin had gathered his fair share of flags, and Kate’s belt was full by the looks of it, but neither of them had anywhere near the number that Kara did.
All of her colleagues played it safe by staying as far down as possible, and Lena knew if she wanted to win, she would have to be the one to climb to the top.
She ignored everyone and everything else as she gripped at the branches and moved with determination towards her goal. That had two outcomes: she was able to pick up the flags and attach them to her belt with the same agile grace as Kara, but she wasn’t paying attention when her safety latch became caught on a tree branch.
“Don’t move!” Andrea shouted dramatically from down below, and Lena thought it was all part of a tactic to psych her out. “You’re going to fall, Lena.”
Lena rolled her eyes and strained to get the last green flag that was whipping in the wind. Her fingertips brushed against it and she glanced down below her to see that Kara was closing in on her.
The strange bond between them was what made her hesitate, and for a second Lena stood in the breeze and absurdly realized that she might be falling for Kara.
The alpha’s pheromones had her on an emotional precipice, and her pride pushed back against that so hard that she laughed to herself.
She ignored the weird sense of foreboding in her gut and lurched forward to take the last flag.
It was no sooner in her hand than she plummeted straight downward, and she would have smacked her head on a large tree branch if Kara hadn’t been right there to catch her.
Later, she would realize that the scream she had heard was her own, though that was the furthest thing from her mind as she dangled half upside down with Kara’s strong arm around her middle. The sturdy muscle of Kara’s thigh pressed against her cheek and it must have been the surge of adrenaline that prompted her to nuzzle gratefully against the alpha.
It was a risky move, and not simply because of the drop, yet Lena considered it worth it when she heard the Kryptonian rumble something in her native tongue. She was sure she saw the fabric of Kara’s pants move, but then again, with her hair in the way, it was hard to tell.
“Up, pull me up,” Lena whimpered when the panicked voices of her colleagues broke through the steady thump of her pulse.
The dominant pheromones that came from Kara seemed altogether stronger than before, which might have been a direct result of Lena ingesting the ambrosia, or just a reaction to her breaking her fall. The alpha not only lifted her up, but she swung them from the tree back onto the bridge, and refused to let Lena go until she had taken her to the other platform.
“You have to be careful, Lena,” Kara murmured with such concern that Lena couldn’t bring herself to look at the alpha.
The strange sensation of her heart puttering in her chest was clearly a sign of shock from her near concussion, and had nothing to do with Kara’s hand on her hip.
Lena was mortified when Kara clasped her chin and tipped her head up to look her over, and she was acutely aware of Andrea’s eyes on them, burning with jealousy.
“Are you injured?” Kara asked, running her fingertips with great care around Lena’s face for any trace of a visible wound.
The entire ordeal rendered Lena breathless until she reminded herself that it wasn’t the light caress that stole the air from her lungs. She had almost cracked her face off a tree trunk – anyone would be breathless.
“I’m fine, just a little shaky,” Lena croaked out, and stepped back before Kara continued to play doctor.
“You look very red in the face,” Jack pointed out with a worried expression, then reached out like he might touch her forehead before he thought better of it. “Maybe you should go back to your room for a bit until the shock wears off? We don’t have another activity scheduled for a few hours and everyone else can check out the lodge in the meantime.”
Normally Lena would have protested on principle alone, but as she saw Andrea sidle up to Kara, she couldn’t control her own tongue.
“You know what? I think I will. Kara,” Lena called out, her tone sweet as she stepped around Jack to smile at the alpha. “Could you walk me back? It’s just that I trust you to catch me if I get a bit light headed.”
The look on Andrea’s face was priceless when Kara immediately returned to her side, and the pettiness in Lena reared up as she walked by Andrea with a grin on her face.
“I guess you’ll have to make do with your own arms and hands tonight,” Lena muttered over her shoulder, and then disappeared down the wooden steps as the alpha helped her off the last two.
“I should stay with you to be sure you are alright,” Kara intoned seriously, oblivious to the fact that Lena was counting on that.
She wouldn’t have gone out of her way to find an excuse to get them back to the room, but now that a perfectly reasonable one had landed at her feet, she was going to milk it for all it was worth. And Kara, while she was at it.
Lena had never so much as held hands with her past dates, but it was just natural how she fell into stride beside Kara and clutched onto her arm while they strolled back to the lodge. This time she appreciated the fresh air and scenery, and noticed Kara staring at her agape more than once as they walked together like a couple.
“Thanks for saving my life,” Lena remarked when it seemed like Kara wouldn’t stop fretting over the incident. “I feel fine now, but I should probably spend the whole afternoon in bed just to be on the safe side.”
“Bed, yes,” Kara agreed and held the doors open for her as they made their way back through the lodge. “Doris and I will take good care of you.”
Doris was asleep in her little kitten bed when they entered the room, but she stood up and stretched to receive pets before settling back down again.
