The flowers of late summer came all at once, opening their blushing faces to the soft light like young women in love – shy and ever so delicate, save for a sunflower with petals like open flame. That flower stood out in its resplendence, growing into its place in the garden amid the pink dahlias and lilies. The servants of the Danvers’ household tended to its beauty at Clark’s request as they toiled in the fields to prepare for harvest.
By the end of the season, Lena took up the habit of strolling through the grounds and resting on a blanket beneath the trees. She sliced the skin from golden apples and devoured their sweetness in the cool of the shade. For lack of a better occupation, she watched the sparrows flitting across the fields and roosting in the eaves of the old barn. Her large swollen belly was an obstacle even during rest, and she found that sitting down could be a most a strenuous activity all on its own.
On her better days, Lena knitted small socks and booties and imagined the pair of infants that would soon be wearing them. She lacked a natural aptitude for such work, but with much patience, she produced several sets to match caps that Nia made for her. After many romantic long months of visiting Kara during the working hours of the day, Lena was far more content to stay at home under the care of Nia and Winn.
The beta servants often whispered about her condition, and all afternoon Lena could hear them lurking about the shrubbery like they expected her to call upon them to deliver a baby or two. The crisp wind in the trees gave them coverage for their muttered secrets about her soon to be lying-in. They knew all of that would have begun already if Lena wasn’t incorrigible, as her sister-in-law Alexandra had called her on many occasions.
The thought of being confined to a bed held no appeal to Lena, even if the soreness of her feet and her plump midsection were both nuisances. She wanted to move about, to massage the persistent cramp in her lower back, and pluck fruit from the trees to help with her cravings. The gardeners teased her for leaving the boughs empty before they managed to pick a single fruit for their jams. Lena gathered the best of the apples and plums into her apron, and more than once she stained her clothes with their juices. Nia had sewn her several new gowns with high empire waists held around her by long ribbons to accommodate her expanding waist. She ruined her favorite of the bunch with her constant wandering about the orchards.
“Clark will be home soon!” Nia called out from behind the roses and came around them to observe Lena, who went to stand up and discovered that it was beyond her capabilities.
She would never admit to it, lest Nia inform Kara and the whole incident bring a fast end to her refusal to lie in, but she did let out a quiet grunt of dismay. It bothered Lena that she would be unable to greet Kara at the steps as she had done every day over the past months, yet she stubbornly chose to remain seated rather than ask for help.
“I think I’ll sit here a while longer,” Lena muttered with one hand on a tree that she intended to use to pull herself up once Nia was far out of view.
“Everyone is coming to dinner tonight,” Nia reminded her in a patient tone and with a tiny smile curling at her lips. “Do you need some help up?”
“No, no, I’m fine! You have much more important things to do since we’re expecting guests.” Lena presented a calm façade to the beta girl for fear that Nia was onto her. “Please tell my dear husband that I’ll be in shortly.”
Nia nodded at her orders and turned to scurry back through the bushes and into the house.
That left Lena to stare up at the tree behind her and the various knobs and knots on the bark that she could cling to while attempting to stand up. She reached for the lowest one and gave a mighty effort to drag her weight off the ground.
It failed after minutes of hard labor, and Lena made a second and third trial before tiring herself. Her curls hung in her face, limp from the humid air and her perspiration.
Lena considered making a raucous to get someone’s attention, but that would certainly mean that her family would intervene, and then she would spend the remainder of the summer on bedrest. No one would believe that she felt perfectly well, or as well as she could feel when expecting to give birth.
She sat calmly and cut up another apple, as if it was of her own volition that she sat under a tree as the sun began dropping.
Kara came upon her some time after their guests arrived, just when she was feeling most sullen and left out. Lena could hear the voices from the house, Alexandra’s loud and garrulous laugh and Eliza’s light but scolding tone.
Lena figured she must have been missed, since the door swung open and there were several witnesses to Kara approaching her.
The arms of Kara’s dress shirt were tucked up about the elbows. Lena admired the handsome figure standing before her and the muscular forearm that extended to offer her a hand. She refused to glance up at Kara’s concerned face in case she be confronted by feelings of guilt.
Lena pouted as she anticipated that she would glimpse a knowing frown on Kara’s face. “I’m just resting for a moment.”
Kara paid her petulance no mind and hunkered down in an effort to meet her avoidant eyes. There was no disapproval on the alpha’s face, just quiet mirth that resided in her gaze and hinted at the beginnings of a smile on lips that Lena wished to kiss.
“I can get up any time I choose,” Lena insisted with the slightest jut of her chin, her arrogance daring Kara to disagree with her.
“Is that so?” Kara asked, wise to the fact that Lena’s grievance pertained to the fast decline in her independence due to her condition. “Then explain why I returned tonight without receiving my usual affections?”
“I believed you would tire at the sight of me at the door awaiting you,” Lena lied, without any true forethought of the implications that might carry.
The idea that Kara may one day be bothered by her presence stung Lena and she huffed at her newfound ability to hurt her own feelings.
The amusement that revealed itself on Kara’s features vanished, and Lena wondered if Kara might stand and leave her to wallow in her misery. It would serve her right for being so insufferably stubborn, but it was a needless worry. Kara was not cruel, and Lena picked up on the sensitivities which her mate often locked away behind stoicism.
“I know you to be far smarter than to believe that,” Kara uttered with a deceptive tone of warning authority as she bent lower to look Lena in the eye.
Lena had no choice but to embrace the fierce and sudden kiss which was bestowed upon her and Kara inhaled her breathless moan. She barely realized that her backside no longer rested on the ground by the time they had parted. Kara’s arms were secured around her bosom and Lena was offended by the trickery.
“You had no right to help me when I was perfectly capable of righting myself unaided!” Lena scolded, in complete awareness of how contrary she was being in the face of such leniency.
She ignored the smirk that lifted the corner of Kara’s mouth and laced her arm through the sturdy offering of her mate’s crooked elbow.
“Tell me that tomorrow when I find you out here, starving and irritable, because you refused to heed my wishes to lie-in,” Kara muttered under her breath, not the least bit surprised by Lena’s rebellion.
The scent of the alpha’s love carried in the summer breeze, and Kara threw up a hand to wave at their guests, who appeared to be enamored with the roundness of her belly.
The blue ribbon around the top of Lena’s waist looked the same as the one that bedecked the fat roast goose at Christmas time. Lena expected to be fussed over and prodded half so much—not with forks, but by excited hands.
Their friends and family waved back and her own traitorous mother lifted a white handkerchief and shook it around to greet Kara.
“I’m not an invalid, and I see no reason to spend these beautiful summer days lying on my back— not unless you will be accompanying me.” Lena kept her voice down low and spoke with a merry shine to her eyes. She came to a halt near the door and peered at the steep steps that would take them inside.
Rather than give Kara the time to accuse her of needing to pause and catch her breath, Lena put a hand into the pocket on her apron and tugged out her knitting. She held up pairs of matching socks – ones that would fit tiny little feet, and another much larger set that was intended for Kara.
“I’ve made you a gift, so now you can’t argue with me,” Lena persuaded and gave the socks to Kara before making a solid demonstration of her capabilities by marching up the steps. She almost stumbled upon the last of them and Kara caught her under the arms with a scent that warned they would discuss the issue later.
Her mother’s presence made the perfect excuse to extract herself from Kara’s grasp. Lena embraced her in greeting and paid no mind to how everyone regarded her.
“Look at you,” Lillian cooed and held Lena at arms’ length to better admire the size of her belly. “My how you’ve grown in the past week. Your little ones are determined to be here before the leaves begin to fall.”
In all her years, Lena strived to win her mother’s praise, and it perturbed her that in order to receive it, all she had to do was open her legs for an alpha. Bitterness rose up her throat and stung the back of her tongue, though she kept her feelings private.
“Goodness, you’re ready to pop,” Sam uttered in delight from behind Lillian, where she was next in line to greet Lena. She took her by the arm to escort her inside the house before the guests all congregated outside. “I’m surprised you’re up and about still. When I carried my daughter, I spent most of the day in bed.”
Lena chose to bite her tongue in lieu of protesting bedrest, and her silence gave Sam the chance to confide quietly, “I rather enjoyed having my husband at my beck and call for those brief weeks. You’d never guess it, but he rubbed my feet on each of those nights. You ought to take advantage while you can.”
Lena dared not brag about Clark’s adoring attentions in earshot of the other alphas. She pretended to listen to Sam’s advice and kept up her show of interest until Alex interrupted them with outlandish news. “My dear Lena, Clark tells me you will finally lie in, beginning next week through the end of the summer—”
“Absolutely not!” Lena shrieked at the mere suggestion of such a betrayal and turned to where Kara was standing in between Morgan Edge and Phil Baker.
Mr. Baker stared at her with the dull eyes of one who was accustomed to her rebellion. “It’s in your best interest, darling. It is such a shame you will have to miss the dedication ceremony and all, but you will have two beautiful babies soon.”
Lena knew the situation was dire when Phil Baker of all people tried to offer her comfort. She took ahold of her dress with every intention of making an exit, but then it occurred to her that Mr. Baker had spoken of a dedication ceremony.
“What is he talking about?” Lena asked and bristled at how all of the guests shied from her, like they had been conspirators in keeping a secret.
“We’re dedicating the building next to the courthouse to your cause,” Mr. Baker replied without picking up on the social cues of those around him. “It will be a place for omegas to congregate, learn and even give occasional input on our laws.”
“When is this ceremony?” Lena questioned and broke off from Sam’s arm with a hand raised to silence her friend. She would have answers from Phil Baker and moved towards him with a menacing aura about her.
“Tuesday,” Phil Baker responded, far too inattentive to everyone who was motioning for him to be silent.
“Tuesday?” Lena repeated in doubt, and made Baker nod before she was satisfied that it was the true date. She glared over his shoulder at Kara, who was still clearing her throat and running a finger under it in the hopes of getting Baker to stop.
The guests discreetly stepped away from Lena’s vicinity and averted their eyes so as not to incriminate themselves. Fortunately for them, the force of her wrath would solely be brought upon their beloved Clark, who tried to circumvent the disaster out of much gained wisdom.
“Now that Lena has arrived, dinner will be served shortly. If everyone would please make their way to the dining room.” Clark directed everyone out of the lounge in a fashion more befitting a burning building.
Several rushed out and a few dragged their feet with curious glances Lena’s way, but the commanding scent of Clark’s pheromones prohibited their lingering.
As they waited for the door to close, Lena and Kara stared at each other in heated silence, and the moment the latch clicked, Kara raised her chin in arrogance and tried to subdue Lena’s tantrum with claim pheromones.
“Given your condition, I thought it best to keep it a surprise, lest the excitement overcome your senses,” Kara intoned, so assured in her decision that she did not offer an apology.
“How dare you exclude me?” Lena raged, like she saw no virtue in Kara’s actions. She understood the reasons behind Kara’s choice, but she loathed it all the same. “You will order my carriage for Tuesday, or I will walk into town on foot!”
The absurd threat rolled off her tongue and she sulked to think that she would have to make good on it. Her feet were swollen along with the rest of her and she became tired from her short strolls around the grounds. Going into town would exhaust her, but she would do it to spite Kara and anyone else who thought her in too fragile a state to attend an event so mundane as a dedication ceremony.
“You’ll do no such thing.” Kara’s mood darkened her features and she stalked toward Lena with all the authority of an alpha who would have no qualms of locking her up in her room. “For once you will behave yourself and remain where you are for the good of our children.”
The warning hung heavy in the silence between them, and if not for the delicate brush of Kara’s palms across her enlarged middle, the tension they created might have turned caustic.
“I only seek to protect you all,” Kara whispered, the shift in her scent coinciding with her words.
Lena softened upon feeling flutters inside of her that meant their little ones were moving. She clasped Kara’s hand and brought it to rest above the place where the sensation continued. “There need be no conflict of interest if you fetch me by carriage and we go together.”
Inveigling her mate with her sensual fragrance, Lena made it plain that their resolution would involve sex if Kara agreed. Observing how the alpha’s eyelids dropped lower, Lena brought Kara’s hands up to rest over her full breasts. Kara lifted them from below, holding them in distraction as Lena awaited an answer.
Kara fondled her with open palms and grazed her thumbs over the cotton that contained them. She located Lena’s nipples with only a few passes and contented herself with plucking them as they stiffened to greet her ministrations. The subtlest growl from her could be interpreted as acceptance, except Kara dropped her hands and stepped back with a flustered hue about her cheeks.
“We will discuss this after dinner. Come, we mustn’t keep our guests waiting.” Kara’s tone made no room for argument, and she placed her hand on the small of Lena’s back to guide her towards the dining room.
Lena went along without complaint if only because she sensed that Kara would acquiesce to her demands.
The loud talk of their guests died down as they entered and Kara pulled out a chair for her. The entire room watched as she took her seat, and Lena smiled at them with a faint blush tinting her cheeks. She breathed in the covetous scent of Kara’s pheromones, much stronger than the rest in the air with her intentions for Lena. The betas and the alphas in attendance responded with deference and the omegas with polite fascination.
The servants brought in the trays of food in a rush as if to distract from Kara’s pheromones.
“The turkey,” Winn declared and presented a large roasted bird on a platter with golden potatoes gathered around it.
In trays and under cloches were other meat dishes and vegetables picked from the fields in abundance. The feast provided an adequate diversion and the guests tasted the offerings with murmurs of gratitude. Lena tucked her napkin over herself and tried to cope with the discomfort of having two babies curled under her ribs.
The early dinner conversation revolved around town affairs and a new magistrate from the south who would hold a seat in their court, then moved on to talk of the harvest festival.
Lena ate with her eyes on Kara, puzzling over the hints of lusty warmth in her face. She had come to know the signs of Kara in rut, but in this case the most obvious reek of it was absent. That stuck in Lena’s mind throughout the meal and afterwards as they retired to the sitting room.
Samantha took her by the arm and led her to a bench seat next to the windows. “It seems that Clark can’t stop looking at you tonight.”
“If I didn’t know better, I’d believe he was in rut, but perhaps he’s worried that I’ll cause trouble,” Lena explained with a suspicious squint in Kara’s direction. She caught her mate staring again and raised a dark brow at how close it came to being indecent.
“Rut or no rut, that is the look of an alpha desperate to be alone with his wife,” Samantha confided with a playfulness in her eyes. “I’m surprised he let us finish our dinner. I expect we’ll be herded out before the ale is drank so he can have you to himself.”
Samantha’s bold statements brought a timidness to Lena’s smile and she fussed with the ribbon on her dress. Kara had doted on her every night since the beginning of her pregnancy, and while she devoted a great deal of time each day to rubbing Lena’s sore feet and the ache between her legs, they hadn’t properly lain together in weeks.
As she thought of it, she realized that Kara hadn’t gone into rut for quite a while, either. They had been so focused on her and her condition that she had forgotten when Kara should have come into rut. The last one must have occurred when her belly was half so large.
“Perhaps I’ll beat Clark to it and start escorting you out right now.” Lena’s quiet words would be taken as a joke and she forced a smile as she sought out Kara with a crinkle of her brows. It seemed the ceremony wasn’t the only thing her mate had been keeping from her, and Lena would have to correct that.
“What is this about escorting us out?” Kara’s mother Eliza was within hearing distance and settled into the closest chair, putting a fast end to any impure thoughts that Lena might have entertained.
“I’m rather tired tonight, what with the heat and all.” Lena glossed over the more obvious reasons to dismiss their guests, the lower back pain and the sore feet. Those were viable excuses that would lead to further prodding about her lying-in and she had no desire to rekindle that argument.
Much to her vexation, Eliza’s approach prompted others to wander over and soon she had a gaggle of excited omegas sitting around her. They all had their own advice to impart in relation to childrearing, and Lena slipped into distraction with the desire to learn.
Given their mixed company, she doubted Kara would come to her, yet she was mid conversation when the alpha abandoned her own friends to wander to Lena’s side.
“You’ve had a long day and you must rest,” Kara determined and put out her hand to Lena to assist her in standing. “Nia has drawn you a bath and will see you safe into your bed while I tend to our guests.”
If not for the sensual exuberance in the air and the faint sheen of sweat on Kara’s brow, Lena would have protested with the belief that her alpha wanted to assert control. Her stubborn nature would not cow to her mate’s commands, but this was a request that felt motivated by a deep lust for her. She placed her hand into Kara’s and bid everyone goodnight.
“I will see you all on Tuesday,” Lena whispered to her friends and rose to let Kara escort her to the stairs.
There were murmurs that followed her out of the room, hushed speculations of when the children would arrive. The excitement of it seemed to be catching, as a few of the alphas gazed upon her belly with a twinkle in their eye.
Lena found it absurd how fast their aggressive posturing shifted within the safety of her home. Their pompous attitudes and need to be seen as nothing but strong, unfeeling beasts was as much an act as Clark.
Under it all, and given the right circumstances, Lena was coming to understand that alphas could be every bit as sentimental as omegas. The secret, it seemed, was that nobody was supposed to know.
Kara’s hand left hers the moment they stepped into the hallway and rested instead on her hip. The gentle touch lasted but a moment before Kara ghosted her backside with the intent of a much firmer caress. The lecherous grip was unable to be completed as Nia rounded the staircase with a feverish complexion.
“Your bath is ready, M’lady, and Clark has procured you a special soap from overseas,” The beta girl gushed, and stopped just shy of colliding with them.
“Then I should like to thank him after our guests leave,” Lena lilted with a rosy tinge to her own cheeks.
Nia dropped her gaze with a smile and Lena fluttered her lashes up at her mate to find Kara staring rather longingly at the swell of her breasts. She cleared her throat to knock Kara out of her improper behavior and smirked at how fast the alpha’s head snapped up.
“Yes, I believe it’s perfumed with rose petals and is claimed to be the very best for a woman in your condition,” Kara uttered and coaxed Lena toward Nia with a hand on her back.
Lena experienced Kara’s eyes undressing her as Nia helped her up the stairs, and she quelled her restless omega by reminding herself that her mate would soon follow.
Stepping into the bath was a perilous feat, though finally sinking into the cool water relaxed her. She lathered herself up with the cake of soap and leaned into the porcelain tub to let her skin soften. Downstairs, she imagined the guests were still mingling about and enjoying themselves before their carriage rides home.
She waited for the noise to die down and called for Nia’s help in exiting the water. Nia brought fresh bath sheets to cover her up and a light summer gown that Lena slipped on over her shoulders.
From the window of her bedroom, Lena watched her friends depart and insisted that Nia retire early for the evening.
“We both know you’ll just knit me another baby cap or dress when you should be resting or doing something you enjoy,” Lena intoned with a playful curl of her lips and her arms around Nia’s shoulders in an affectionate embrace.
“I love sewing fine garments,” Nia argued with a gentleness and humor to her voice. “If I had been an alpha, I would have become a tailor and opened a shop of my own.”
“It is something you can do regardless,” Lena pushed and tucked the thought away to be discussed later with Kara. “We should all have the same rights and privileges.”
Nia responded to her with a shake of her head and a soft laugh. “Don’t start any trouble on my account. I am familiar with the particular gleam in your eye, and you should know I’m very happy here. I’m looking forward to welcoming your children.”
“You and me both,” Lena sighed and smiled down at the slope of her belly. “I believe it will still be many weeks before they arrive. I’ve just run out of room.”
Nia stared in fondness at the place where Lena’s hand rested. “Their nursery will be finished soon and ready for whenever they come.”
Lena lowered herself to sit in a comfortable chair and pictured the bedroom her children would soon occupy. Winn and Nia worked in tireless effort to arrange all of the furnishings and fabrics they would require for two infants.
“Thank you for taking such good care of us,” Lena whispered and contemplated her fair fortune in living among such kind people.
With a small curtsy, Nia ventured out and shut the door behind her. Lena’s attention shifted back to the window and onto Kara, whose stride kept her riveted.
She removed her gown in her daze of attraction and caressed along the partition of her inner lips, safe in the knowledge that anyone on the ground would see from the neck up.
Fortunately, the carriages were swift to leave and Lena lingered long enough to see that her alpha returned to the house. She moved back to the bed to lay atop the covers and propped a feather pillow under her lumbar region. Her back wasn’t the only part of her that ached, and she soothed herself with delicate strokes that were difficult to accomplish in her prone position.
Lena’s efforts tired her out long before she accomplished pleasure and she gave up to fondle her breasts. She pinched them with light fingers to keep them at attention, and as the candle slowly dwindled, so too did her patience.
Suspicion clouded Lena’s mind and she came up with all sorts of reasons as to why her mate was mysteriously absent. None were suitable excuses, and she planned to roll herself onto her feet with the intent to locate Kara when the alpha creaked the door open to find her naked and on display.
“I see you’re ready for my nightly affections,” Kara commented, the gruffness of her voice a sign that Lena’s brazen antics stimulated her alpha. She hurried to close the door behind her and stuffed her hand into her trouser pocket to retrieve the vial of oil she brought each night to massage Lena’s pain away. One vial was expected, but two was not, and from the haste with which Kara shoved the other back into her pocket, it was obvious Lena was not supposed to see it.
“Why has it taken you so long to join me?” Lena questioned and parted her legs farther as Kara seated herself on the bed. She pretended to be focused on the distinct shape of Kara’s arousal in her trousers and leaned forward to touch along the spot that corresponded to the thick head.
Curling one hand around it, she slipped the other into Kara’s pocket to steal the extra vial. The lid revealed it was made of a type of clover that lessened the libido of an alpha in rut. She took a good gander at it and stared up at Kara in heated accusation. “So you are in rut and you’ve decided to lie to me about it rather than seek my comfort. That is two strikes against you.”
Before Kara could speak in her own defense, Lena tore open the alpha’s trousers and massaged at the fast forming erection within. She relieved her mate of the oil she held and poured a moderate amount over her palm to rub into the low part of the shaft that would widen into a knot. “You have done much lately for my benefit without bothering to discuss it with me first,” Lena rasped with her mouth poised to accept more of Kara’s cock.
