After five years of pining for her best friend, Kara figured she would go five more. It wasn’t that she liked keeping secrets from Lena, but she lacked the nerve to come out and say how she felt. Even after she spent over a month fixating on it while wandering through the frigid wasteland of the Phantom Zone, she emerged no more prepared to confess. Every day she stood in front of the long mirror in her apartment and practiced a speech out loud to her reflection.
“I know I’ve been a little distant since I returned, but it’s not because of you—or maybe it is because of you—but not in the way you think!”
She put her palm against her hot blushing face and cringed at the poor wording. If her best tries came out like that, Kara could only imagine how abysmal the real attempt would be. In her mind’s eye, she could picture Lena with a baffled frown on her face.
“It’s just — I don’t know how to act. We’ve been friends for so long and you’re so perfect and beautiful—”
Kara cut herself off as Alex strolled through the door and caught her mid-compliment.
“Were you just telling yourself how perfect you are?” Alex asked with mild amusement on her lips that threatened to become playful mockery. “What are you trying out one of those daily affirmation techniques?”
“No, it’s not like that. I was just trying to work through a problem I’m having.” Kara sighed and retreated to the kitchen before Alex could interrogate her about said problem.
“Is it a problem that donuts will fix?” Alex questioned and held up a box, along with a gallon of milk.
“Yeah, maybe if my mouth is full, I can’t make any more stupid speeches to myself in the mirror,” Kara swiped the milk from Alex’s hand and reached for a donut that she devoured as she poured them each brimming glasses.
Alex clinked her glass against Kara’s, gulped some and then threw her a knowing look. “I’m pretty sure I know what’s on your mind. If this has something to do with who I think it does—”
Kara plugged up her ears with her fingers and hummed in a loud obnoxious voice. The childish coping mechanism was ridiculous, but Alex took the hint and let her dart off to sit on the floor in front of the sofa with her snacks. She took big bites out of two donuts and finished them off just as her comms buzzed with J’onn’s voice.
“Supergirl – Sentinel, you’re both needed uptown at the Botanical Society. Some type of Climate Crisis demonstration has gotten out of hand.”
Kara glanced over at her sister, and they nodded to each other and transformed themselves to defend the city. This was the type of distraction Kara needed to bring an end to her inner turmoil, even if it brought new anxieties.
She took to the air with Alex tucked against her side and sped through the skies to the location of the incident.
“We have an environmentalist pitted against some climate change denier,” J’onn explained through the comms, his voice breaking up as he mentioned that both of the parties engaged in the attack were of alien races.
The poor connection blocked out some of the details, including information J’onn provided about their abilities. Kara learned on her feet as she landed and one of the aliens filled the air with spores. She coughed in the clouds of greenish dust and split up with Alex to subdue the attackers. One of the aliens tried to wrap her in vines and Kara snapped through each one, coiling them around her forearms and breaking them with a rough pull.
“You’re supposed to be on our side!” The alien shrieked, recoiling some of her vines before Kara tore another one off. “How can you stand by while beings like that contort the truth?”
Kara followed her glare to a large male alien that had rocks protruding from the back of his hands and arms. He had draped himself in the American flag and was busy pushing environmentalists into each other and whooping when they fell. The crowd he was with seemed ignorant and loud, and Alex was in the midst of them in an effort to control their mob mentality.
“Lady, I learned long ago not to involve myself in Earth politics,” Kara gritted out as a vine smacked her in the face for having the audacity to avoid picking a side. “Not to mention, the solution to these problems is more complicated—
“The humans listen to you and that’s all you have to say?” The woman pressed incredulously and rushed forward to snare Kara in tighter vines that wound around her legs first. “Everyone is doomed if we stand by and do nothing!”
The memory of Astra struck Kara harder than the woman’s attacks and she reeled back as she tried to block out the bad memories.
“We don’t get to make these choices for them, and fighting is never the answer!” Kara spat, and lurched forward to crack her forehead against the woman’s skull.
“You lie to yourself,” The alien accused and confused Kara by releasing her vines. She stood taller and raised her chin into the air as she held her hands palm up in surrender.
Kara didn’t think twice about seizing her by the wrists, and the most exotic looking flowers bloomed in the woman’s palms. The colors mesmerized Kara and she leaned towards them in a trance to breathe in the scent before they exploded into golden dust that covered her from head to toe.
“Kara? Kara! What the hell happened—you look like you’ve been crop dusted!” Alex shouted, startling Kara out of her daze.
She spun around to see where the woman had gone, and then brushed her hands over her suit in a bid to rid herself of the golden specks. “I don’t know, she was right here—”
“Well, she’s gone now,” Alex remarked and motioned to the big guy she had apprehended. “Want to help me out here and hand him over to the authorities? Turns out he started the fight.”
“Didn’t anyone tell you not to throw stones?” Kara quipped at the rock guy, who snarled down at her in response. Alex rolled her eyes at her joke, and Kara sighed as she grabbed him by the arm. “You need a better sense of humor, Alex. That was hilarious.”
“Yeah, well, you need a shower!” Alex called after her, but Kara was already in the air with the alien screaming at her side.
It took Kara about an hour to wrap up her business related to National City’s latest crisis, and then she followed Alex’s advice and scrubbed off all of the gold powder that left her looking like an Oscar trophy. The stuff sprinkled all her carpets and she spent more than an hour vacuuming and wiping down the bathroom. By then, she was ready for a relaxing evening on the couch.
Leaving her hair to air dry, Kara strode into the bedroom to pick out a cuffed tee and some comfy light grey sweat pants. She grabbed a pint of Cookie Dough from the freezer and got two spoonfuls into her mouth before someone knocked on the door.
With a casual squint, she activated x-ray vision to check out the visitor and gulped too much ice cream when she saw that it was Lena, and that her best friend was wearing the skimpiest thong she had ever seen.
Kara rushed to greet the omega and choked on the chocolate chip pieces that she inhaled too fast after searing the image of Lena into her mind.
“Lena, I was just looking at you!” Kara wheezed out in a bizarre way that sounded more like a whistle. She balled her fist to cover her mouth and coughed again, then glanced over at a framed photo of them and lifted it to help with her explanation. “I mean—your picture. “No, no, don’t call her! Don’t call anyone!” Kara snatched the cell phone out of Lena’s hand and then ushered her best friend over to the couch as she rambled, “I’m just so happy you’re here. You’ve been on my mind a lot, like all day, and I guess I’m a little flustered because of it.”
“Are you sure you haven’t been drinking?” Lena uttered suspiciously and squinted at Kara as she reached out to trail a single fingertip down the side of her jaw. “You’re wearing body glitter.”
Kara stroked her finger over the gold residue that was still clinging to her skin. “A spiteful alien glitter-bombed me earlier at some climate crisis protest. You know, for someone who was so concerned about the environment, you would think she’d be aware that glitter contains tons of microplastics.”
Lena smirked at her rant and the defeated slump of Kara’s shoulders as she continued to find lingering dust over her neck.
“I actually think this is some kind of pollen or organic plant matter,” Kara sighed and froze as Lena wiped some more of it off her face. “I got most of it off in the shower—"

“Checking something,” Lena uttered in that matter of fact tone she often reserved for business calls.
Kara gulped upon spotting the serious line of Lena’s mouth and tried not to think about how soft her lips might be. “I don’t have a fever, but I am dying,” she muttered under her breath, and then whimpered when Lena raised one devastating, sexy eyebrow.
“The pollen might be causing some side effects. How long ago did you deal with this alien?” Lena asked curiously and observed the twitch that started in Kara’s eye.
“Like three hours, or something,” Kara muttered and looked everywhere but directly at Lena as she resisted the urge to fly through the wall and across the ocean.
“And how many fingers am I holding up?” Lena questioned.
“Two,” Kara answered automatically, her mind elsewhere as Lena raised her chin and leveled her with a look better suited for the bedroom.

“Fou—ooh my god look at the time! I better get back out there and find that alien, who knows what she’s up to?” Kara spluttered, her jaw working around the words like she was trying to chew her tongue off.
She couldn’t believe how devious Lena had been with that question, how crafty and unremorseful and so well timed that Kara hadn’t seen it coming.
“You’re attracted to me!” Lena declared and stalked after Kara as she retreated to a corner with thoughts of walking through a fire just to get the pollen off her skin. “Judging by the gold appearance of the substance on your skin and your symptoms, I’m certain the alien you encountered was a veritarian. Did he or she have vines? Veritarians are from the same planet as vertrullians, or truth seekers. This pollen is an important part of their diet. It would be a lot like bee pollen if honey was more essential for our survival and if we were able to make use of it in its raw form.”
The long list of facts about the pollen didn’t comfort Kara at all and she panicked with the omega’s gloating pheromones in her nostrils. “So, is there a cure? I can’t just go around telling everyone the truth! Someone will figure out that I’m Supergirl.”
“Fortunately for you, the effects should wear off within 48 hours,” Lena supplied and tapped at her super watch to check the hour. “That gives you only about 45 hours to go.”
“Forty-five?” Kara hysterically repeated and scrunched her face up like a toddler about to throw a tantrum. “No, no I can’t go another forty-five minutes, let alone hours, Lena! You’ve been here ten and I’ve already ruined everything! I have to — I have to leave— and go to the Fortress or space or—”
“Oh, no you don’t,” Lena cut in and placed herself in front of the door with her arms crossed. “You can’t be seen like this, Kara. For your own safety and the safety of everyone else you care about. No, you’re staying right here in this apartment with me where you’re safe, and we’ll live on take-out for the next two days.”
If Kara’s jaw dropped any further there would have been a hole in her neighbor’s ceiling. She paced through her nervous laughter and turned to avoid Lena’s stare as she threw her hands up. “That’s a bad, bad plan.”
“What’s so bad about it?” Lena challenged and folded her arms in insult. “You’re not afraid to spend some alone time with me, are you?”
“Alone time?” Kara croaked and let her eyes sweep down Lena from her gorgeous face to her shapely hips. She reacted to Lena’s choice of words as if they were an attack and fell backwards over the couch as she leapt away.
It conjured up some random thoughts of Pokémon game battles, and she imagined someone narrating her life with the text: Kara is confused. It hurt itself in its confusion!
“Just give me a minute.” Kara fumbled uselessly with her cell, writing out a message to Alex to request back-up with her current situation.

“Alex agrees that you ought to stay here with me, doesn’t she?” Lena assessed with a knowing glint in her narrowed, amused eyes.
Kara tried to shake her head no, but ended up nodding up and down an excessive number of times.
“If you’re really staying over, then we need some ground rules,” Kara emphasized and side-eyed the omega. “You can’t ask me personal things, because that’s unfair, and no questions about what I’m thinking or feeling.” She listed off her demands like she was in a hostage situation and faltered as Lena approached her with the confidence of a woman who understood the power she held.
“Fine, then I’ll be honest. Thinking that I almost lost you recently was by far the worst experience of my life. I want to be closer, a lot closer, and now I can tell you want that, too.” Lena breathed slower in Kara’s vicinity, her heartbeat calming to a softer tick, and then it sped up as she touched Kara’s arm. “If I’m wrong, just tell me what you want—“
“Gosh, for starters, to see you naked—really naked, not just x-Ray vision naked—then maybe marriage and twenty pups—”

“Okay?” Kara repeated in doubt and loosened her death grip on the shredded pillow.
“Yeah,” Lena affirmed with a blink. “I mean, it’s a little hard to wrap my head around the thought of you stalking me when we’ve barely spoken since your return, but what you don’t know is that you were on my mind every time I was taking those ragged breaths. Why don’t you go ahead and put on that movie? I’m just going to borrow some more comfortable clothes and then we can order take-out.”

First of all, congrats to OP who finally won the prompt poll and had this written! 👏 And gosh, this is truly comedic gold! I can't stop laughing at finger part bec that's smooth af and what made it the best was Lena pulling it off well. XD As usual, Kara is soooo adorable by being everyone's fave space puppy indeed. Only she can make the combo of awkward and sexy work and I can't really blame Lena for being all over that. Kind of a shame I have yet to read anything where Lena uses 'puppy' as an endearment bec this fic shows the truth in that statement. Anyways, it has been a great read!
