Having not one but two mates had many unforeseen benefits, especially when they shared the important duty of keeping National City safe. At any given moment, Kara or Rara would drop in unannounced after a life-saving rescue or crime-stopping mission just to surprise Lena at her desk with a bouquet or a box of candy. Other times, Lena returned from the lab to find sweet notes waiting for her next to her laptop. It took her a while to get accustomed to the constant showering of love and affection, but Lena looked forward to the routine of it every day.
As she became acclimated to the changes in her life as a claimed omega, she also recognized that her body was different, and not just because of the bites. More often than not, she suffered from fatigue, a greater sensitivity to scents, and unbearable nausea from skipping meals. Gone were the times when she could work through lunch and dinner without any breaks.
One afternoon, she canceled a board meeting just so she could pick up lunch at Big Belly Burger, and it was then that she decided that purchasing a pregnancy test was also in order.
Most omegas would have taken the test before mentioning it to anyone, but she texted her alphas as she waited in line at the pharmacy:
Don’t freak out, but I’m about to buy a pregnancy test, and I just thought you both should know.
Lena continued to stare at her phone screen with a pout settling on her lips as she waited a long minute for a response.
She was still clutching the phone in hand when wind whipped her hair back and then Kara stood across from her in full Supergirl garb.
All around them, shoppers gasped at Supergirl’s sudden appearance, and Kara put both of her hands up to reassure the crowd. “False alarm. There isn’t an emergency. I’m just here to shop.”
With a laugh and a tight grin, Kara started picking up random bags of candy and other loose items that sat in the bins at the front of the store.
Rara was no less conspicuous about entering the pharmacy, and cut in front of other people in line just to reach Lena. She looked like Kara in a pair of glasses, striped shirt and business casual slacks.
“What are you two doing here? How did you even know where I was?” Lena uttered, moving her lips as silently as she could.
The last thing she wanted to do was draw attention to herself while the entire store was gawking at Supergirl casually digging through a bargain bin.
Rara was practically hip to hip with her by the time Supergirl sauntered over with her bounty, and Lena blinked down at the text that flashed across her screen.
We followed your heartbeat.
Rara’s message was more heart emojis than words, and Lena resisted the temptation to look at either of them.
They knew her by the beat of her heart, and could literally pick her out of a crowd in a busy city. It was terribly romantic, but a bit ridiculous that they had learned to do that just for her. She fought to remain stoic in line, in spite of the way her omega defied her by calling to her alphas.
Worse, the uptick in their proud and excited scents was starting to catch curious looks. By some fortune, the beta who was about to be served waved Supergirl to the front of the line.
“Oh, no, I shouldn’t skip,” Supergirl murmured politely while her eyes landed on Lena a few feet away.
“Please, I insist. You’re always out there protecting us. It’s the least I can do.” The beta stepped back with half the line following his lead, and they all watched in awe as Supergirl bought her snacks and swaggered out the door.
Kara lingered by the front of the building and anxiously devoured sour patch kids by the handful while waiting on Lena to make her purchases.
Rara wasn’t faring any better, because she held an assortment of pregnancy tests in her arms and a giant gummy bear that she chewed while standing in line. By the time she left the store, she had gnawed it down to a pair of legs.
Lena paid as fast as she could, thankful that Supergirl’s appearance seemed to have worked in her favor, because everyone was so distracted that they didn’t recognize her at the check-out.
She hardly stepped foot outside when two sets of hands were on her, and she had to bat them off, lest someone notice how a Super and a reporter were simultaneously fawning over her in the middle of the street.
“Lena, we just cannot help ourselves, please may we have one kiss?” Rara pouted. Her amorous scent almost compelled Lena to agree as she sidled closer to huff at her neck.
“Let me at least fly you home and we can talk there,” Kara intoned in her confident, commanding way, except her hands were on Lena’s hips instead of her own.
“You’re both incorrigible,” Lena exhaled, far less exasperated than she ought to have been with how they fussed over her in public.
Normally when they were out on a date, they were at least prepared to be incognito, or the venue was lavish enough that nobody would be snapping candid photos.
“We just wanted to be here for you,” Kara argued with the smallest crinkle forming between her eyebrows. “This is an important moment and it wouldn’t have felt right if we had texted back.”
Posturing in her Super Suit, Kara did her best to be persuasive while Rara pushed up her glasses and shuffled closer with the softest, most beguiling scent. They stared at Lena with hopeful, round eyes, and she smiled in spite of the nervous flutter that entered her stomach at the thought of carrying one of their pups.
God, they were hard to resist when they teamed up on her with such adorable pouts.
She almost leaned towards them before she thought better of it and walked off sharply before someone started taking pictures of Supergirl.
“Meet me in the alley discreetly,” Lena instructed in her best boss tone, and then smirked at the sight of Supergirl streaking through the sky.
Ten seconds later, she took a corner, and Kara gathered her up to protect her from the wind during a short flight back to the penthouse. Rara landed on the balcony first and steadied Lena by the arm as Kara put her down.
“The two of you certainly know how to make a spectacle. I don’t think Supergirl’s ever been spotted buying candy in her Suit before.” Lena squinted in amusement at both of her mates, who suddenly looked bashful about their behavior.
She tore open a pregnancy test box and Rara zoomed off and reappeared with an empty plastic cup in her hand. Lena had no idea where her mate had acquired it, and she certainly wasn’t going to ask as she took it without a word and pointedly avoided mentioning the test in her hand. She wandered halfway to the bathroom when she realized both alphas were behind her, and Kara seemed to have every intention of following her inside.
“Go entertain yourselves and I’ll be out in a minute,” Lena urged, so anxious that it didn’t even occur to her to ask how either of them might have been feeling about the prospects of being parents.
She didn’t wait to hear their arguments and closed the door to afford herself what little privacy she could have with two Super alphas on the other side of the wood.
It wasn’t until a moment later when she had stuck the pregnancy stick into the cup that she realized she was actually hopeful about the whole situation, despite never once discussing children with her mates. She waited the required amount of time with building nervousness and pulled the stick out to check the results before leaving the bathroom.
“Well?” Kara blurted the second the door opened, the pungency of her alpha musk nearly barreling Lena over.
“Well…” Lena paused, her eyes downcast to stare at the little stripes that signaled what she had concluded already. “It’s a good thing I haven’t been drinking lately.”
The teasing phrase clicked something into place in her head, and Lena straightened up with a sharp intake of breath that resulted in her suddenly advancing forward while brandishing the pregnancy test.
“You two knew, didn’t you?” Lena accused incredulously, her indignation faltering as she grinned at the sudden panic on her alphas’ faces.
They both simultaneously stepped backward, and Kara held her hands up guiltily and began to shake her head. “What? We uh—we had no idea—”
“Yes, we knew it before you,” Rara cut in matter of fact, heedless to the way Kara was silently signaling for her to shut up. “For weeks we have been waiting for you to realize.”
“Weeks?” Lena shrilly asked and spun towards Kara in mock outrage, which slipped off her face as her lips curved with happiness.
She glanced down at the test again and the darkening lines of confirmation.
Over the past few weeks, Lena suspected many times that her mates were up to something, what with how they pampered and distracted her, but she had just attributed all of that to their personality quirks and love language — not intentional deceit.
“I suggest the two of you explain yourselves immediately over a celebratory dinner,” Lena chided and went to grab her coat, all while she began to process just how much their lives would change with a pup in the picture.
They would have a lot of logistics to work out, but an idealistic family portrait formed in her head and that was all she latched onto as she held out the test to Rara. With a dimpled smile and the double threat of a raised eyebrow, she waited for her mates to catch up.
“Wait a minute, we can’t go to dinner,” Kara whined, wringing her hands as she apologized with her scent and stepped closer to catch one of Lena’s wrists. “I mean we’d love to — we’ve been dying to know how you feel – and if — if you’d be happy with this little surprise—”
“Tonight is family dinner night, and you promised Alex you would be there,” Rara informed her, brushing the hair from her cheek to tuck it delicately behind Lena’s ear.
Lena balked at the thought of sitting at a dinner table with all of her found family and friends, if only because she hadn’t dared to see anyone once she had been claimed twice. None of their friends knew about their relationship, and she quite liked the privacy of that. She suspected they would face judgment the moment they walked through the door.
She had cancelled their dinner plans for the past three weeks in a row, and if it dragged on any longer, she was pretty sure Alex would track her down and bring her in on charges of suspicious behavior.
“We can’t breathe a word of this to them, not until we’ve discussed it ourselves,” Lena warned, the powdery blush of her excitement paling with her sudden dread.
“You worry too much, sweet Lena,” Rara murmured and placed a hand over the non-existent bump where their pup resided. Kara’s warm palm settled next to it, and they both leaned in to kiss across their respective claims until the tenderness soothed Lena’s omega and she breathed evenly.
“Nothing bad is going to happen. We love you, I love you, and Alex will take it in stride,” Kara promised with such conviction that Lena came close to believing it herself.
She pressed her face into the crook of Kara’s neck while Rara enveloped her from behind. To be surrounded by such love was a blessing, and Lena drew strength from them as she held on. The subtle fragrance of her omega declared how happy she truly was to discover she was pregnant, and it took all of her willpower to untangle herself from her alphas when she was so thoroughly content between them.
“You both owe me big time, and I’m not sure I forgive either of you for not telling me,” Lena lied, the convincing dryness of her tone effectively sending Kara and Rara into a panicked frenzy that resulted in them both talking over one another to beg forgiveness.
“Please, Lena, forgive me, I wanted to tell you when we were at the zoo,” Rara dramatically sank to her knees and clutched at Lena’s thighs, and Kara shoved her aside in a bid to clasp Lena’s hands as she reasoned, “But then we thought it would be better if you found out for yourself, because we didn’t want our emotions to cloud yours—”
“We will do anything,” Rara insisted, and Lena smirked at the lengths she realized her alphas would go to just to avoid being in the proverbial doghouse for the night.
Despite the very real fear of being cast out of her friend circle as some sort of pariah, Lena couldn’t contain the urge to toy with her mates as she stalked off with her coat, knowing damn well her mates would follow at her heels like puppies.
“We’ll see how dinner goes, but be prepared for punishments when we get home,” Lena lilted in a tone she knew would keep her alphas glued to her side.
She could smell the shift of their pheromones as Kara rushed to open the door to the balcony for her.
Both of the alphas made a quick wardrobe change, with Kara trading her Super suit for a pair of jeans and a wool sweater.
Rara ditched her glasses and offered Lena her arm as they stepped into the cold breeze. She wore a jacket with the collar lifted up and Lena fondly stroked the fabric before Rara scooped her off her feet and flew across the city to land outside of Alex and Kelly’s apartment.
“No matter what happens, everything is going to be okay,” Kara muttered as she knocked on the door, and the three of them collectively held their breath.
Fortunately, it was Nia who greeted them, and although her eyes popped wide upon noticing the difference in their scents and the glaring marks on Lena’s neck, she was all smiles as she waved them inside. “Hey, come on in, Alex made a delicious spinach dip.”
Rara made a dramatic gagging noise, which she stopped when Lena sent a disapproving glare her way.
Contritely, Rara approached the platter of vegetables and picked up a piece of broccoli and a tomato, setting both down on a plate and giving them a small pat before grabbing a handful of chips.
Kara stuck her chin out in the most conspicuous pout as she stood over the snack table that was always loaded with junk. “Where’s all of the pizza and pot stickers?”
“Kelly is making us some traditional Ethiopian food tonight. These are just the snacks,” Nia explained and slid into a spot next to Brainy, who paused with a carrot stick in hand.
Kara cheered up at the first whiff of Kelly’s food and didn’t at all notice Brainy’s reaction to spotting the claim bites on Lena’s neck.
Brainy bit off half the carrot stick as he sat forward, and then proceeded to choke on the vegetable as he croaked in surprise, “Len—arhhk—”
“Yes, you see, this is why I will never eat those,” Rara disclosed like the vegetables were instruments of death and she had known the risks all along. She pushed her broccoli onto Kara’s plate while everyone was distracted by Nia thumping Brainy on the back to help.
His coughing fit brought Alex out of the kitchen with a startled look that softened at the sight of Lena. “There you are. I was starting to get offended that you were ditching game nights. What—”
“Who,” Brainy corrected as he released protective scents more befitting a brother.
“— have you been doing that’s kept you away for so lo—oh my god.”
Alex faltered mid step, and from the way her eyes widened and then narrowed, it was obvious she had seen the two claim bites. “Are those — have you been — with both of them?”
“Alex, we can explain,” Kara jumped in so fast that Lena would have found it amusing if she wasn’t involved in the debacle.
Frantically standing up, Kara blocked Lena from scrutiny and then back stepped as Alex advanced on her, neither one of them remembering that she had super powers.
“Someone had better,” Alex hissed, her ire firmly on Kara as opposed to Lena or Rara, like she held her responsible for whatever was going on.
“We are in love,” Rara announced just as Kelly ran in to see the cause of the commotion.
“We don’t expect it to make sense to anyone else, but we both have strong feelings for Lena and we acted on them” Kara gestured to her look alike and refused to budge a step more as Alex encroached.
“Good, now that everyone is aware of the relationship between us, we can eat,” Rara demanded and stood to take the warm dish that was in Kelly’s hands. “This smells wonderful.”
No one else moved apart from Rara, and they all watched the Super settle down at the table to help herself to the meal. She grabbed a piece of flatbread to dip into a sauce, and Lena’s lips curled as she spied the vegetables in the dinner that Rara began devouring.
It helped ease some of the tension in the room, and Lena placed a hand onto Kara’s shoulder to comfort her.
“What’s really going on? I’ve still been working on ways to reunite the two of you,” Alex hissed under her breath with a softer glance in Rara’s direction.
Their friends flocked to the table to escape the strained conversation, and Kelly brought more bowls of Ethiopian cuisine from the kitchen that Rara rushed to try.
“Neither of us want that,” Kara replied, speaking for herself and Rara with more than a little hurt in her eyes. “That would mean wiping her out of existence, Alex.”
Lena cocked her head towards the adjoining room and she was about to wander into it when Rara called out to her from the table. “Lena, you must try this.”
She froze with her hands deep in her back pockets, and her spine went stiff from the sudden anxiety of never hearing Rara’s voice again. Regardless of what occurred, she knew Kara would never support the plan to fuse Rara back into her make-up, but the idea of it still filled her eyes with tears.
Through self-control, Lena blinked back her feelings and hurried over to find a spot at the table. Alex reluctantly pulled up a chair beside Kelly, and Kara was the last to grab a seat next to Rara, undoubtedly because she was processing several emotions of her own.
“So, when exactly did you claim Lena?” Brainy questioned in his flat and serious tone, squinting as he glanced between the two culprits who were sharing a flatbread between them. “Unlike that delightfully delicious injera in your hands, Lena isn’t meant to be split—”
Lena gagged on her first mouthful of food as she thought of the many ways that Kara and Rara had split her.
She knew that Brainy was speaking from a place of love rather than bigoted disapproval, but she didn’t realize that he would be the one to continue lecturing them over dinner.
“And neither is Kara,” Alex muttered with a wary glance in Rara’s direction. She appeared ready to continue her passive aggressive commentary, closing her mouth only when Kelly placed a hand over hers to rein in her attitude.
The atmosphere at the table was thick and Lena dipped her head as a bout of nausea roiled in her empty stomach. She clutched at the place where new life was growing inside her and wondered which of her alphas had succeeded in getting her pregnant. They would never be able to find out since they shared the same DNA, and her concern over how that might make them feel triggered a wave of distress pheromones.
“Guy’s, c’mon, Kelly made this incredible meal, let’s not spoil it,” Nia interjected when Brainy dramatically placed his elbow on the table to better interrogate the Kryptonians.
“It wasn’t my intention to spoil this delectable bounty so lovingly prepared, but Lena—”
“—Is a world-renowned genius and sharp-witted woman with a heart almost as big as your brain,” Rara stated, her normal jovial smile nowhere to be found as she glanced from Brainy to Alex. “You think I don’t listen or understand because I talk with an accent, and because I squeeze joy out of every moment I’m alive, but I am not a child, Alex. I love, and dream and hope just as much as anyone else in this room, and I deserve to live.”
“I wasn’t saying you don’t. We just don’t know the ramifications of what might happen if you two are separated indefinitely,” Alex murmured, somewhat cowed by the fact that Rara was addressing the elephant in the room so eloquently.
“And if there were any, don't you think Lena would have discovered them by now? It’s been months, Alex, and we’re around her all the time. Nobody knows us the way she does.” Kara’s conviction was emphasized by the way she took Lena’s hand and raised her chin as if to dare Alex to argue. “We all know she would be the first one you’d call to help in a crisis, and in case you haven’t noticed, we’re happy.”
Lena sensed that everyone was waiting on her input, so naturally she gave them all the kind of explanation she would have appreciated if their roles were reversed – one that came down to data. “Based on my clinical assessment, Kara’s physical make-up has in no way been compromised by the process that caused this. She and Rara can continue to lead totally separate but entwined lives.”
She flicked the hair back from her face and chose not to bring up any of the possible emotional outcomes of such a choice, at least where it concerned the apparent lack of acceptance from family and friends.
“I support your relationship,” Kelly stressed, staring dead-on at Kara and avoiding the look of askance on Alex’s face. “I’ve seen the way the three of you interact. You’re all attentive to one another and considerate of each other’s feelings.”
“I’m with Kelly on this one,” Nia intoned before Brainy or Alex could get a word in to catastrophize. “I mean who cares if it’s not conventional? None of our relationships are. I’m dating an alien, Kelly is dating a shadowy government agent, and Lena has two of the most incredible alphas in the galaxy who can also fly.”
“Plus, with Rara around, we can both lead normal lives,” Kara interjected with her finger in the air as she made her point. “When there’s an emergency, one of us will always be there, and I haven’t been worrying myself sick about protecting everyone the way I once did.”
The weight of the world seemed to have finally lifted from Kara’s shoulders, at least half of the time.
“It’s true,” Rara bragged, puffing herself up as she scooped food onto a plate for Lena and passed it off to Kara so she could set it in front of her. “I have learned to control all of my powers with Kara’s help, and to assist with emergencies across the city. I would like to be having my own suit now. I hear I must speak to you about this.” She turned to Brainy with an expectant and earnest look on her handsome face.
“I suppose I can fashion a new one within the week, but back to matters at hand: I see now that it would be illogical for Lena to simply pick one of you when you’re essentially the exact same person. To choose one over the other would be cruel to all three of you.” Brainy rested his chin in his palm as he considered the facts.
“Look, we’re not saying you have to understand our relationship, but can you at least trust that we know what’s best for us?” Kara asked, softer this time as she stared at her sister with an obvious need for approval.
“Polyamorous relationships have been around for as long as monogamous ones,” Kelly gently reminded Alex, who sighed in resignation and frowned back at her. “It’s not a one-shoe-fits-all situation.”
“It’ll take me some time to wrap my head around all of this, but ultimately this isn't about me,” Alex conceded. “It’s about the three of you, and if this makes you all happy, that’s all that matters. I guess that means I’ll stop trying to find a way to merge you back together.”
It must have taken a lot for Alex to say that, because Kelly squeezed her hand and gave her an affectionate smile.
“Good, because I’d hate to go full Luthor on you, Alex. Not even Kara would be able to save you then,” Lena supplied with an enigmatic grin as she picked up her wine glass. She brought it to her lips, if only to simulate sipping the liquid, and enjoyed the flicker of paranoia that danced behind Alex’s eyes like a candle flame struggling to stay lit.
“You’re joking right? She’s joking,” Alex quipped with just the right amount of squirming to make everyone at the table laugh.
“Nobody is going to mess with your alphas, that’s for sure.” Nia’s amusement carried across the table, much like her hand, and Lena appreciated the contact and the solidarity it symbolized. “Now, can we dig in before all of this gets cold?”
“Yes, please eat,” Kelly encouraged with a smile, and the topic of their relationship closed with the content noise of everyone enjoying the home cooked meal.
Their evening fell into a natural order after that, with Kara and Rara devouring most of the food while Alex and Brainy recounted stories of their latest missions at the DEO. Kelly shared news about her own work and Nia had everyone laughing about the latest article she had been writing on the disasters of fashion through the past decade.
By the time Rara was scraping her plate clean, and Kara was all but begging to finish Lena’s
leftovers, everyone was pleasantly drunk on wine except for the three of them.
Alex certainly had a telltale lisp as she propped her arm on the table to slide into Lena’s personal space. She gripped at Lena’s arm and lowered her voice to what she obviously considered a whisper as she informed Lena, “Listen I don't have a problem with you having two mates, it’s just one is my sister and the other is—well—”
“Your sister?” Brainy supplied with a knowing glint in his observant eyes. He peered meaningfully at Lena and ignored the way everyone else had paused to eavesdrop on what was being said.
“Exactly!” Alex stressed, half pointing towards Brainy as she held her glass of wine in a death grip and confided in a hush, “I’m trying so hard not to picture you all in my head.”
“Why would you say that?” Brainy blurted in offense, evidently disturbed by his own mental imagery as he swung himself away from the table to straddle the chair so that his back was turned. “Now I’m trying not to picture it.”
“Why? Lena is hot, and those two are so buff, I’m pretty sure half of National City has imagined Supergirl and the badass CEO going at it,” Nia mischievously insisted, forcing both Brainy and Alex to stick their fingers in their ears.
“Nobody should be picturing it!” Kara shrieked in embarrassment, her own flustered complexion on par with the reddish shade of Alex’s hair. She looked close to flying off when Rara let out a laugh and flexed at the table.
“I ruin my shirts if I’m not careful,” Rara confided with a pleased smile when the stitching didn’t snap open. She nudged Kara, who mumbled something about Rara being shameless, and Lena smirked at the lot of them.
“Well, if I’d known dinner would be served with a side of imagining me nude, I’d have worn something far more sheer.” Lena lilted, not the least bit sorry for the way it caused Kara and Rara’s heads to snap in her direction.
Thick alpha scents polluted the air, and while Lena breathed them in, Alex covered her nose and flung a balled-up napkin at Kara. “Stop that, you’re going to stink up the apartment and you're the last person I want to smell when I’m in bed.”
“Oh, okay, well, your pheromones weren’t discreet either when you started dating Kelly. Did you forget that J’onn kept misting the DEO every half hour with a scent masker for the first two months of your relationship?” Kara remarked with a smug jut of her chin.
“Is that true?” Kelly spluttered on her wine at the revelation and spun to gawk at Alex, who avidly avoided everyone at the table by suddenly stacking the empty plates.
“Nooo,” Alex lied, grabbing cutlery with her left hand while she threatened Kara with the right for spilling secrets.
“It was my idea to use the sprinkler network,” Brainy announced through a broad and self-satisfied smile. He gazed at Nia with all the hope of an alpha who wanted to impress their omega and sat up straighter to peacock in his achievements. “It covers the entire facility and only took me minutes to reconfigure.”
The playful chaos unfolding in front of her reminded Lena of all she had been missing in the past weeks when she had hidden away. Though she knew how intrinsically she fit into their group, it still amazed her that in spite of their differing opinions, she was considered family. Maybe that explained the subtle way she clutched at her stomach while Kara, Rara and Alex bickered the way only siblings could.
After she helped clear away the dishes, they all headed into the living room for their usual game night, and Lena nursed a glass of juice as she watched her mates win at charades over and over again.
“Isn’t this cheating because they technically share a brain?” Brainy asked with a sharp squint at the look alikes.
“You have access to a hive mind of other Brainiacs and we never faulted you for that,” Nia shrugged and then reached for another card to begin their turn.
J’onn and M’gann arrived in time for the third round, and the focus of the conversation shifted onto their relationship.
As the night progressed towards its usual close, Lena sensed the familiar fidgeting of the pair of her alphas and knew what it meant. Rara found plenty of convenient excuses to touch her, while Kara was much craftier and accompanied Lena to the bathroom just to get handsy.
“Why don’t we take you somewhere for a romantic dessert and we can talk about the you-know-what?” Kara suggested with too much enthusiasm and a beaming smile that belied the fact that both of her hands were already underneath Lena’s top and playing with her tender nipples.
“You were supposed to help me find more soap to fill the dispenser,” Lena reminded her mate and waited for Kara to make eye contact before raising an eyebrow at her.
