Mists hung over the mountains to the west like the veils and cloth wimples of young maidens who had come into their first heats. Anyone with ‘the gift’ can see that very clearly.”
Lena curled her legs onto the carriage seat, tucking her dress underneath her as she settled in to rest.
They would be on the road for mere hours more, and then she would have to contend with new meetings and hard farewells, and the thought of it exhausted her already.
“I may yet be Kara’s queen, but she will leave me soon, and I am not certain I can endure that,” Lena sulked, feeling rather childish about her circumstances and more than fearful of what might befall them both before they were reunited.
The Crying Isles were a strange but beautiful place near to the mountains and sea, and Lady Luthor had invited her to a banquet to celebrate her betrothal to Kara.
Lena took comfort in the knowledge that word of their engagement had preceded them in their travels and that at least her host recognized them as future mates.
The sun was glinting low into the carriage window as the wheels rolled over stone paths at the bottom of a hill. Castle Luthor sat at the top of it, proud and grey-faced, as austere as the inhabitants themselves.
A man whose face was half covered in an iron mask came out to greet them, and Luthorian knights displayed the House’s green and white heraldry on banners.
“Lord Alcaeus,” the masked man announced his name with a bend of the knee and unraveled a scroll to read out a message. “Lady Luthor formally welcomes you. It has been many years since we entertained a guest from the east, and to host our future Regent is an honor, indeed.”
Kara dismounted to greet the Lord and all of the knights, and to approach Lady Luthor, who sat stiff-lipped and silent upon an ornate wooden seat. She rose as Kara stepped forth, but her eyes searched beyond Kara and fell upon Lena with a spark of intrigue and recognition.
Lady Luthor was striking in a suit of all red, with a cape attached to golden clasps at her neck. She did not dress as most others who bore the title of lady, even if she did bend in a curtsy of sorts to greet Kara.
“Is Lady Luthor an alpha or an omega?” Lena whispered to Eve, who huddled close to her and held onto her arm.
“An alpha,” Eve hissed, never one to interrupt such formal ceremonies.
Kara beckoned Lena forward with an outstretched hand and Eve gave her a small shove before she realized her presence was wanted. She hurried to Kara’s side and curtsied to Lady Luthor out of respect.
“At long last you return,” Lady Luthor uttered, following the bend of Lena’s head to look into her eyes. “You were found here as a child.”
The peculiar intonation made Lena pause and stand to attention. She had been told stories about her abandonment, and how Astra and Non took her as their charge, but the other details of her early life were vague and few.
Kara put a hand on Lena’s shoulder, like she had long feared telling her truths of her birthplace. “It’s not unusual for mothers to abandon their infants in the west. It’s one of the reasons our ancestors named this chain of islands The Crying Isles.”
“The children aren’t abandoned, they’re raised by the all-mothers — every omega of the society,” Lady Luthor corrected with a jut of her chin and a gleam of menacing disagreement in her eyes. “Besides, traditions have changed in the last fifty or so years. No one has left a child to the waves since well before Lady Lena—”
Michael coughed from behind Kara and strode forward with a few other knights to interrupt the tension between the houses.
“It is fortunate indeed that you were able to make the right decisions on Lady Lena’s behalf, or else we wouldn’t be here celebrating her future nuptials today,” Michael intoned and folded his hands at his back in a stance that somehow made him seem dutiful and yet impatient.
Lady Luthor glowered at all of Kara’s companions. “Fortune had nothing to do with it and you'd be wise to talk only for yourself. I have plenty words of my own I'd like to use." She turned to stalk inside, indicating that they should follow with nod in the direction she was heading.
Lena bit her tongue despite the many inquiries she wanted to make. She walked alongside Kara, hand-in-hand, conscious that Lady Luthor’s guards and servants were observing her with more than moderate interest.
A steward peered at her through narrowed eyes and stepped into Lady Luthor’s path to take instruction.
“Show them to their rooms and prepare the banquet hall,” Lady Luthor commanded before departing down the corridor, leaving them without goodbyes and trailing behind an abundance of sharp and spiced pheromones.
The steward conveyed the guests through the halls, and Lady Luthor’s servants directed Kara’s friends and high-ranking knights to their bedrooms.

“Liar,”Lena scolded and knitted her brow sharply together at Kara’s attempt to tell her a tale. “What is the real reason? And don’t say sprites or fairies, or any of that other nonsense you used to make up just to tease me when we were children.”
Kara’s demeanor changed from one of carefree joy to a more serious and grim manner. She lowered her goblet and frowned with reluctance to share the truth with Lena. “It’s nothing I wanted to worry you about — “
Lena sat forward in her seat and sternly whispered, “Tell me.”
With a guarded glance around at all of the seats that had yet to be filled, Kara leaned closer to confide, “There is a tradition of mating in these parts, where a pack of alphas may hunt an omega during a feast of Beltane. One of the reasons I’m here with an army is to put an end to this tradition and keep it from repeating,” Kara confided under her breath and then glanced over her shoulder to ensure nobody had overheard the information. “I assure you that your safety is paramount, and no harm will befall you while you stay here. When I move on, Michael and several of my own guards will remain to keep watch over you.”
“And who will be keeping you out of danger as you head into battle?” Lena asked at the revelation, aghast that Kara had planned to risk her own life to end the abominable tradition.
“James will be with me, and so will the rest of the alphas that have trained by my side for as long as I can remember,” Kara insisted, and under the cover of the grand table, she took Lena’s hand to squeeze. “There is no war that will stop me from returning to you. I give you my word.”
Just as a tremor of emotion quivered Lena’s lip, the Lady Luthor stood up and commanded everyone’s attention without so much as a word. The banquet hall fell silent as she raised her goblet of wine, and Lena dropped Kara’s hand in paranoia that someone might consider her virtue had been compromised at the familiar show of affection.
“Tonight, we honor the future union of Kara, daughter of Zor, and Lena, one of our own who is welcome here for as long as she wishes to stay.” Lady Luthor addressed them with kind, intelligent eyes, and a voice that carried effortlessly through the large room from decades of practice. “It fills me with pride to see young love thrive within these castle walls once again, and I have no doubt a wedding will be on the horizon when Kara returns. May they grow stronger apart so that they are unbreakable when they are reunited.”
Cheers went up faster than tankards of ale, which plenty guzzled from in merriment. The entire hall peered at their table, and Lena imagined what they might be discussing as the reek of alpha pheromones thickened like the cooling soup that servants ladled into bowls. Lady Luthor still watched them in her peripheral vision, and Lena blushed while Kara postured.

“Luckily, I have quite the appetite, and should you find you’ve had your fill, I will gladly devour whatever is left,” Kara explained with a hint of mischief curling her lips. She stole a strawberry from the plate and chewed it with a squint of delight.
“I should have sensed an ulterior motive,” Lena chastised, though her tone was far too light to express any emotion other than fondness. She observed the carefree way Kara helped herself to food and the joy it brought her to sample all of the dishes. “How is it that you keep such high spirits when danger lurks beyond this castle? I’ve never understood how others return from battle so hardened and weary, and yet you show no signs of having lost pieces of yourself.”
“Knowing that you await me when I return is enough to sustain me,” Kara rejoined without hesitation, though her smile faltered, and a somber, more subdued one took its place. “When I’m out there in the midst of it all, there is often very little hope to be found. I’m fortunate that I’ve learned to hold onto mine. Knowing my heart is with you wherever I go grants me a strength I do not take for granted.”
Lena had never heard such romantic things from Kara, neither out loud nor written as sentiments in the collection of love letters that her friend hand-delivered.
She broke with tradition and leaned towards Kara, resting her forehead against her future mate’s with an innocent smile. Their hands met in plain sight for all to see, and she treated Kara just as she had behaved prior to their coming of age.
The one change was how her eyes lingered on Kara’s soft lips in enchantment.
“I shall keep track of every day that you’re gone, and I’ll climb to the highest tower of the castle just to see if I can spot your banner from afar,” Lena whispered, clasping her mate’s hand tighter without a care for those who watched her do it.
Kara tucked a stray wispy curl behind her ear and backed away from the affection. She stumbled up from her seat, dragging the chair on the floor as she took a step towards her fellow knights. “You’ve just reminded me that I must go and ask James about our banners—”
While Lena narrowed her eyes at the fast shift in Kara’s demeanor, the alpha walked off.
Lena tried not to take offense to Kara’s departure once she noticed the curious eyes on her from all sides. She knew Kara only meant to protect her reputation, much as it stung to be left alone, and she put her chin down to select food from her plate and to avoid the bothersome attention. In her distraction, she almost didn’t notice Lady Luthor’s approach.
“It is hard to believe it has been so many years since you left this place, and that now you are back again,” Lady Luthor intoned, standing at the edge of Kara’s vacant chair with one hand on the carven arm of it.
“Thank you for such a kind reception, and for allowing me to stay here in safety while my betrothed travels further still.” Lena graciously bent her head, finding she was too intimidated to hold Lady Luthor’s piercing gaze for long.
“You may have ventured east with your foster parents, but this is still your home, Lena.” Lady Luthor gave off a brooding scent and slid into place beside her at the table. “I have long wished to make your acquaintance—ahh—because I was the one who found you. I wanted to make certain no harm came to you after you left my care, and that Zor kept his word by bringing you to a family that would appreciate you.”
“I am very beloved by my foster parents and by Kara,” Lena muttered, peering across the banquet hall to check the whereabouts of her mate. She saw that Kara was standing with Michael, laughing and having a competition of tossing grapes into her mouth.
"Well, for that at least I am grateful," Lady Luthor whispered, her unflinching gaze sweeping down Lena as if appraising her in the dress she gifted.
Now that Lena had garnered Lady Luthor’s notice, she found herself incapable or articulating all she wished to ask. The alpha's commanding scent was both imposing and reassuring, and Lena froze like a winter bloom when the elder alpha saw fit to tuck an errant curl behind her ear in a manner most familiar.
Lena blinked at the enigmatic ruler of The Crying Isles, and at the placement of her hand and how it remained poised within reach. “One day, you shall have to tell me the story of how you found me.”
It confused her to be touched by Lady Luthor because it was of a maternal sort of caress – not of the kind she would expect from an elder who might bestow compliments on her beauty. Lady Luthor must have still viewed her as the child she rescued from the sea so long ago.
She turned in search for Kara, lingering amid the rest of her dear friends. No one was around and it seemed the opportune time to make her inquiries about the Isles.
“I am afraid for my mate and the foes she will face after she leaves me,” Lena disclosed with a soft, shuddering breath as she slipped into the habit of twisting at her fingers.
The sensation of air on the back of her neck took her off guard, as though a ghost had touched her.
She knew it was just dread from the discussion of Kara’s future, and winced at a sudden pain in her temple that brought with it a horrible flash of imagery.
Unkempt and holding weapons forged of wood and steel, barbaric enemies of her imagination began to close in on her. Their scent assaulted her nostrils, foul and sexual, and Lena swooned in her chair before she could banish the nightmares of her own creation.
All of the light in the banquet hall drained to black, moving in and out like a tide.

“You’re just jealous because you’ll never have an omega to come home to,” James countered, his brows drawn together in bemusement over Michael’s attitude.
“Go back to your seat,” Kara instructed tersely in a bid to grant Lena some breathing space.
James pushed Michael forward to get him moving, and while the murmurings continued of
Lena’s delicate state, Lady Luthor motioned to her own servants to bring out more ale.
“I find that talk is hard when mouths are filled,” Lady Luthor muttered under her breath, her concern particularly palpable, even amidst the thick scent of Kara’s protective pheromones.
“Thank you.” Kara spared Lady Luthor a glance in gratitude, though her arms remained steadfast in the embrace of Lena’s waist. She pressed her cheek into Lena’s and only pulled back when she must have remembered it would seem indecent.
“Is this a common occurrence?” Lady Luthor asked with obvious curiosity, and Kara held Lena at arm’s length, unwilling to forego all contact just yet. “I only ask, so that I’m able to keep your betrothed safe in your absence. I can have one of my maids be at her side—”
“That won’t be necessary,” Kara assured the elder alpha, her tone resolute, as if it was a matter of pride that she would be the one to keep Lena safe. “Lena has brought her own servants and my men will watch over her.”
“We don’t wish to inconvenience you further,” Lena explained kindly, deferring to her alpha to make the decision on her behalf.
The meek omega scent that clung to her was still distressed from her wild imagination, and she bent forward in order to breathe in the comforting musk that surrounded Kara.
“You’re a stubborn pair. You remind me of—” Lady Luthor paused in her utterance like she had said too much, and pressed her lips together in a wry, sad smile. “I won’t keep you with old stories when it’s clear you require rest. Perhaps now would be a good time for Lena’s maids to escort her back to her chambers?”
The implication that Kara should remain at the banquet was clear, and though it pained Lena
