There was only so much self pity that Lena could take, and she wasn’t about to repeat her mistakes after disappointing Kara for a second time. She refused to call or text, since those were insufficient ways of apologizing, and instead spent Friday night analyzing herself and why she feared going public with their relationship.
It all stemmed from the horrible experiences she had after first presenting in high school, and nothing seemed to improve with time. College was a waking nightmare of toxic Alphanicity, and Lena had resolved never to be the spectacle of any gossip that related to one. She had seen what happened to her friend Sam when she had fallen for an alpha, and how the bastard shared intimate details of their time together at parties, where bragging was more important than any omega’s privacy or respect.
All of the omegas Lena knew had stories about alphas that had shamed them, or used them in some way, and the majority of alphas she worked with lived up to the stereotype.
Normal human methods of explaining her behavior wouldn’t cut it with Kara, because she simply couldn’t understand where Lena was coming from as an omega on Earth.
That prompted Lena to delve back into the rabbit hole of the internet, and by Saturday morning, she had compiled a list of pros and cons about their relationship that she inevitably scored in a furious burst of clarity. She loved Kara, profoundly, and she owed it to both of them to be honest about that.
Lena sat glued to her screen for the entire weekend, devouring every piece of information on Kryptonians that she could find. She went so far as to join a sub group on how to learn the language and managed to pick up a few words here and there, but the deeper she immersed herself in the teachings of their culture, the less information she could find that was already translated.
According to a Krypton book on the traditions and customs, should an omega refuse to make a relationship public after a substantial period of courtship, she disgraced the alpha and herself in the eyes of Rao. It seemed that any alpha who was dishonored in front of others would be forced to forfeit their right to find a mate and be deemed unworthy on Krypton.
In short, Lena had really fucked up.
“At least the second time it was private,” Lena whispered as she took notes on how to rectify the situation.
Doris softly meeped beside her, and she pet the kitten as she scanned the next page.
There were only two choices an omega could make when trapped in this situation: she could go on to find a new mate, and ultimately condemn the alpha she dishonored to a shunned life, or she could mend things with the alpha by performing The Ritual of Rao in front of witnesses.
The ritual itself required Lena to make an offering of ambrosia to the alpha she had wronged, and an open admission of their courtship while wearing hand fashioned robes in the alpha’s family colors.
Lena faltered at the thought of humiliating herself at work for the umpteenth time and any ramifications that her actions might bring.
She scooped Doris into her arms to pace around her apartment and nervously expressed her concerns to the kitten. “I’m really going to do this, aren't I? It’s not like the work environment could get any worse. I need to make it right, even if I’m too late and Kara doesn’t want me anymore. That’s what love is, isn’t it? Laying yourself bare and hoping you’re accepted, flaws and all.”
Doris stretched a little paw up to Lena’s chin and purred in contentment.
With a plan in mind, Lena set her tiny companion down to nap and proceeded to print out the list of Kryptonian ingredients she would need to make the ambrosia. She hadn’t a clue what any of them were, but a fast search provided her with the address of a unique store downtown that catered specifically to aliens.
Lena hadn’t been sure what to expect when she found Garlaxas Convenience at 9pm on Sunday, but it wasn’t a store front with a giant eight-foot inflatable gorilla holding a painted sign that said We’re Inside.
The ominous greeting served as a warning and Lena braced herself as she pushed through the door to find the store lit up like the inside of a Christmas tree. Sparkling lights covered the shelves in neat rows, and the ones that didn’t blink in different colors seemed to have a coating of glitter to make up for it.
The smell of the place was oddly delightful, which perturbed Lena all the more because the first thing she glanced at on the shelf moved inside a glass jar.
“Excuse me, do you happen to understand English?” Lena asked the peculiar looking being who sat behind the desk. The alien was half her size and blinked back at her with four large eyes. Each seemed to move independently and Lena tried to pick one to focus on as she held up her list. “I’m looking for these Kryptonian items, if you could just point me in the right direction.”
“N’arrabdu shlarrnak,” The being chirped in excitement and Lena stepped back as several large yellow and blue feathers sprouted out the side of its neck like a ruffled collar.
The little creature raised a hand as if to touch her, and then a larger being of the same species appeared and slapped it on the back of its head.
“Shlerat mnorunt!” The bigger alien hissed, and grabbed the smaller by the hand to drag it away while all four of its eyes narrowed in Lena’s direction.
The alien slowly absorbed its feathers back into its neck, and Lena shuddered and ventured down the aisles by herself.
“Guess they don’t get many humans in here,” Lena muttered under her breath and tried not to stare as she passed a man with blue skin happily licking something that wiggled on a stick. She wandered deeper into the store and finally found a sign with hand painted Kryptonian symbols for the word food on it.
Excitement shot through Lena in hot tingles and she hurried over to inspect the shelves. On the highest one, she located metallic bottles and crystal spheres that reminded her of perfume. A few wilting plants sat in terracotta pots and immediately perked up when Lena reached out to stroke a leaf or two. They leaned towards her when she moved on to what looked like a large selection of mixed fruits on top of a table.
Lena tried to guess what kind Kara enjoyed and was so caught up in her exploration she didn’t hesitate to pick some up.
A purple looking thing that was the shape of a football smelled faintly of rotting garbage and stained her fingertips. She set it aside with a dry heave to lift a long stalk of something orange that felt like sandpaper against her fingers. After scratching herself, she stuck it into a basket sitting beside the stall.
At the end of the selection was a large grey peach with fuzzy blue hairs and Lena instantly grabbed it. The fruit weighed more than she imagined and felt warm and soft in her palm as she squeezed it to check for ripeness.
From out of nowhere, someone exhaled a garbled sounding groan and hot breath hit Lena in the face seconds before a white-haired old alien appeared with a spray bottle. “Out, out!” she yelled, and spritzed the air while she lifted a broom to advance on Lena.
“No, wait!” Lena shrieked, her hands barely reaching her face as the air shimmered right beside her and a hulking beast of a thing pulled up its trousers and ran off.
With the hairy peach nowhere to be found, Lena gaped at it in horror and frantically wiped her hand down her hoodie.
The older alien chased the beast off in a language she couldn’t understand. “Vash, vash! Eik berk tin tosh.”
“Oh god, was that his—”
“Come, come, I give discount,” The white-haired alien insisted, and offered Lena a wipe to cleanse her hand. “Is second time today he snuck in. Informed cups.”
“Cops?” Lena questioned in a daze, and followed the alien as she bent to pick up her basket.
“Yes, yes, they take care,” The elder alien uttered sagely and helped herself to the list that Lena still clutched in her hand. She squinted at the symbols on the page and her eyes lit up—literally. The once dull amethyst of her irises began to glow a brilliant violet red and she tugged Lena’s sleeved to drag her over to the shelves. She grabbed items with several sets of hands Lena hadn’t been aware she had and deposited them in the basket cheerfully.
“You learn the customs for love—so sugar, so sugar,” The alien lilted with a kind smile and gave Lena’s arm a gentle pat.
Lena resisted the urge to correct her English and blushed at the mention of love. She stuffed her hand into her pocket to retrieve her phone and chewed her lip before deciding to change the subject. “Do you own this shop? I’m amazed you’ve learned all these languages.”
“Oh, we like to learn. Knowledge sustains us, I show I show,” The elder stated and stole the phone from Lena’s hand. The lock screen still held a picture of Kara, and the alien tapped it with an expectant look.
“Hey, you can’t just—"
“Who is?” The elder asked and tapped the picture again with all the enthusiasm of a toddler with a new toy.
“She’s—well—she’s my mate,” Lena whispered, her voice far softer than it ought to be as she snatched the phone back to glance longingly at the alpha’s face. “Kara.”
The name no sooner rolled off her tongue when a gentle twinkling mist descended around the alien and she breathed it in deeply.
“You feed on learning new things, how is that possible?” Lena gasped, amazed by the benevolent alien who took her by the sleeve again and ushered her up to the register without any explanation.
The woman rang up her items and Lena handed over a few hundred dollars before noticing that the Kryptonian plants in the corner were wilting again without her presence. The sight of them made her heart ache and she impulsively purchased them both, then left with written instructions on how to make the ambrosia.
It wasn’t until she got home twenty minutes later that she realized how laborious the process would be. She spent all night in the kitchen measuring and stirring and constantly watching the gelatinous substance to see if it would move.
Her notes recommended she place it in an airtight container and keep it somewhere quiet and loving to rest for a minimum of five hours.
“What the fuck does that mean?” Lena blurted and squinted at the warning to keep it away from the cold. She took the tub to her bedroom and left it nestled atop the comforter while she finished up with the last phase of her plan, the robes.
There was no point in trying to buy fabric at 2 am, so Lena dug through her storage closet in pursuit of anything she could find in Kara’s colors. She should have known the universe was mocking her when all she recovered was an old blue bedsheet and a pair of unused red curtains her mother had bought her as a gift when she moved into her apartment.
Lena resigned herself to the miserable fate of watching Youtube tutorials on how to fashion homemade robes that could at least resemble some kind of toga from Ancient Rome.
After an entire pot of coffee, two pricked fingers, and enough sewing to cause numbness in her hands, Lena finally had something she could wear that wasn’t worth the sleepless all-nighter she had just pulled.
“This could legally be defined as a hate crime,” Lena sighed in front of her mirror and twirled for the benefit of Doris, who curiously tried to catch a loose thread that hung from the bottom.
She hoped that Kara wouldn’t think she was mocking her culture and gathered up the tub of ambrosia to find that it had turned a vibrant neon pink and was, in fact, moving.
Lena didn’t have the luxury of time to worry why it was a different color from the one Kara had given her at the work retreat. She barely had the chance to grab her bag on the way out of the apartment. It was packed full and rattled like a tambourine as she walked out to her taxi.
“Let me guess, the twelve-step program on Bleecker?” The taxi driver gruffly asked, and she blushed and corrected him before he took her to a rehab program instead of Spherical Industries.
She arrived at work ten minutes late and the entire floor went dead silent as they caught sight of her leaving the elevator.
Kara was already at her new desk next to Andrea and the spike in Lena’s anxiety snapped her head up. Even from across the office, Lena could see Kara’s lips parting, and she stumbled forward as Andrea snidely muttered, “Are those curtains she’s wearing? God, tell me you have a mental illness without telling me you have a mental illness.”
“Let’s just hope they don’t match the drapes now,” James laughed and nudged Mike in the ribs as he came to stop at his desk.
Lena ignored all of the speculative mutterings that followed her across the main floor and while she set up all of the items she needed to begin her reconciliation with Kara. She had to improvise in some cases with random items she found lying around the house. One of the main objects she required was meant to represent the Red sun of Krypton, and she pulled it out and held the soft foam sphere up with both of her hands.
“Bear witness to Rao, and hear me as I declare under all of the light in the universe :Zhao for Kara Zor-El Danvers.” Lena voiced the beginning part of the ritual in a solemn tone and braved glancing up into Kara’s eyes to find them mesmerizing and bright with intrigue.
“Wait, is that a clown nose?” Andrea snorted at the only possession Lena owned that even vaguely symbolized a red sun. “Shame you forgot the wig. You have the complete costume otherwise.”
Lena went a little wooden from the criticisms and judgmental stares she received from all around the office. People were laughing at her and she spoke over the sound of their jeers in a wavering voice. “I, Lena Kieran Luthor, ask you, Kara, to walk with me between worlds in the undying light of Rao. I bestow upon you these gifts.”
The only physical gift to be given was the ambrosia, which Lena set carefully on Kara’s desk before she returned to the center of the room and danced the dance of her people.
She was meant to honor Kara with her own culture and pulled her phone out to hit play on music that immediately caused smirks to form on everyone’s faces.
Lena tucked Rao into her bag and then did something she hadn’t done since she was twelve years old, without warm up and in the wrong shoes. She positioned her feet and then stuck her right leg out to press the toe of her shoe to the ground, then met Kara’s riveted stare as she Irish danced her ass off.
The wild swing of her leg as she kicked it up and moved around the floor with awkwardness and determination was both frantic and hypnotic. If the robes had been shorter, she would have flashed half her colleagues as she performed the Irish stepdance. Some of them had their phones out to film her, and she caught Kara pushing Mike’s hand down to stop him from capturing her making a fool of herself.
Lena never got to finish due to Jack throwing his office door open to hiss, “What the hell is going on?”
She floundered in wordless explanation, sweaty and out of breath as she wheezed by her desk.
“Lena’s having a breakdown,” Andrea informed him sweetly and took a few more pictures of Lena’s red face before tucking her phone away.
Kara had already popped the lid off of the ambrosia and was shoveling it into her mouth with her bare hand as some of their colleagues gawked on in disgust.
“Is that stuff moving?” James asked, horrified by how fast Kara was devouring it.
“Oh gross, let me see!” Mike jeered, and shoved James out of the way as Kara swallowed down the last mouthful and sucked the rest off her fingers.
Amid snickers, Jack strode out of his office to snap at the whole team. “Look, I am trying to have a meeting with the Ambassadors—”
“Blame Crazy over there,” Andrea quipped with a critical squint at Jack as though she expected him to side with her assessment of the situation. “Lena walked in late looking like a background decoration from a middle school play. She distracted the whole floor.”
Jack sighed in disappointment and hung his head like he didn’t want to reprimand anyone. “Lena, after your performance on Friday, I think it best we have a word.”
Behind him, a man and a woman in matching suits exited the office. They peeked over Jack’s shoulder and their eyes widened at the sight of Lena in her handmade garb.
Lena thought she would become the butt of another joke, but the strangers pushed past Jack to observe the ridicule she faced and then spoke to each other in Kryptonese.
“Please continue, daughter of Earth,” The woman encouraged and held up a hand as if to suppress the snide laughter that came from her colleagues.
“That was it,” Lena whispered, embarrassed and still breathless from the short performance. “I just finished.”
Her lie didn’t fool the Kryptonian ambassadors and Lena blushed at the soft reassuring smile the woman offered.
Kara seemed to be standing prouder, and the strong scent of her pheromones overpowered Andrea’s mirth.
“We’d like to see more,” The male Kryptonian stated, his sharp eyes finding James, who covered his laugh with a loud cough.
Lena turned to Jack, who looked perplexed by their request, and gave the go-ahead with a subtle nod for her to continue. She reeked of vulnerability and humiliation, but she carried on to properly finish her dance with her arms straight at her sides and her chin raised in defiance of the mockery she endured. The quick steps and fancy footwork would have tripped anyone else, and she noted that the approval she smelled wasn’t only wafting from Kara.
“I bet this goes viral,” Mike grinned, filming Lena out of Kara’s reach from the safety of Benjamin’s desk. “A million hits or more.”
“Don’t be an ass,” Winn muttered and smiled in support of Lena, who retreated to her desk the second she finished.
“Right, well, if you’d like to follow me, I’ll show you the labs with our advanced equipment,” Jack uttered with entirely too much enthusiasm for it to be real. He was evidently eager to move the Kryptonians along before anyone else said or did something to embarrass the company. Their attention remained on Lena as they sauntered down the hall, but her own gaze was fixed on Kara and the way she puffed her chest and inhaled the air.
Lena smiled timidly and got two steps away from Kara’s desk when the Ambassadors doubled back to call Kara to join them in her native tongue.
For a brief moment, Kara hesitated, her mouth open and eyes dark as she stared at Lena, but then she rushed off without a word.
“I guess your little performance missed the mark,” Andrea snidely stated and scrunched her nose like the delicate scent of Lena’s hope personally offended her.
Lena bristled at how quick Andrea was to torment her and directed an icy glare her way. “Just like all of your blatant flirting, so that makes you the joke, Andrea. In fact, why don’t you borrow this?” She threw the clown nose at her colleague with enough force to make her flinch. “It’ll match the lipstick stuck to your teeth.”
Andrea spat something back in Spanish that Lena chose to ignore, and then turned to try and covertly rub her thumb over her front teeth.
“Wait, so like, are you dating Kara?” Benjamin grunted from the sidelines with a displeased and jealous scent about him.
“Probably just fucking,” Mike snorted, his grin lecherous enough to turn Lena’s stomach.
“Man, is this all part of some kinky alien foreplay?” James asked with a disgusted curl of his lip that suggested he was judging her all the more.
“It beats yours and all of your off-key singing at karaoke,” Lena dryly muttered and pulled the robes off to reveal that she was wearing a short skirt and low cut top beneath.
She slumped into her chair and tried to focus on her work, but it was hard when she had no clue if the ritual had appeased Kara and if the alpha considered their relationship mended. Although Kara had eaten the whole tub of ambrosia faster than a starved stray, so that meant something.
The office returned to a quiet murmur of gossip, and Lena kept her head down while her omega threatened to release distressed pheromones.
By some miracle, she managed to endure it all until lunch rolled around, but there was still no sign of Kara. Lena imagined she felt her presence more than once in line at the cafeteria, and it spurred her into buying a heaping portion of mac n’ cheese, two slices of chocolate cake and the fruit soda that Kara loved.
Rather than punish herself by heading to the table where Andrea and the rest of her floor sat, Lena boldly chose to sit alone and refused to be intimidated by their snickering.
“Twenty bucks says I’ll be the next one to get in her panties,” James announced loud enough for Lena to overhear.
“Don’t you know better than to stick it in someone who’s certifiable?” Andrea snorted just to make everyone laugh.
“C’mon, if she’s desperate enough to put in all that effort just to get laid, she won’t turn me down,” James reasoned, his egotistical stench filling the cafeteria to nauseating levels.
“Maybe she’ll show you how Kryptonians do it,” Mike added, the excitement in his voice evident even from across the room.
Lena tucked her elbows in against her tray and shrank down without a conscious awareness of her body language.
She was ready to throw all of her food into the trash and flee when a strong foreboding took root in her stomach and Kara entered the cafeteria.
Breathing in the scent of Kara’s simmering anger was like inhaling pool water. It burned just as much as chlorine hitting the back of her nostrils. She put her hand over her face and ducked in her seat with the belief that Kara hated her for the entire disastrous performance she put on that morning. That had to be the explanation for such a horrid stench.
Kara stalked over with her hands on her hips and then swung around towards their laughing colleagues.
Everyone had dumped money on the table to take bets on who Lena would sleep with next, and Kara approached so fast she blew all of the bills onto the floor.
“How can you all treat Lena this way?” Kara glared down at the crumpled tens and twenties and crossed her arms as she waited for any one of her colleagues to explain their actions. “She can’t trust any of you! You ridicule her for every little thing she does, and on top of that you constantly sexualize her.”
“Kara, it’s all in good fun, I assure you.” James put up a beseeching hand and leaned over to scoop up some of the money. “Lena likes to pretend she’s better than everyone in this office, including you.”
“Maybe she is,” Kara snarled, shocking everyone at the table and Lena, who sat forward in surprise.
The muscles beneath Kara’s shirt were tense and solid, and her fists were clenched by her sides as she huffed at the whole table, “I thought Lena was ashamed of me because she didn’t want to tell anyone about our relationship, but you’re the ones who should be ashamed. If this is how alphas treat omegas on Earth, then I’m not sure I want to live here anymore.”
“Wait, Kara, we didn’t mean any real harm.” Andrea’s panic cut through the defensive musk of the other alphas and she reached toward Kara in desperation.
“I thought we were friends, Andrea, but if you condone their behavior, then you’re just as bad as them,” Kara spat vehemently and locked her teeth together before delivering a calmer word of caution. “If this is how they treat other omegas in front of you, imagine what they say when you aren’t around.”
From the way she glanced up and down at the rest of the alphas, Kara made it clear that none of them would have to worry about mating with an omega ever again if they continued to disrespect Lena. She shunned them with a cold shoulder and stalked to Lena’s table, unleashing a determined and fiercely protective scent.
“You don’t belong here, surrounded by people who won’t honor you,” Kara informed her and laced their fingers together to all but drag Lena out of the cafeteria.
Lena was so dazed by the brazen exit that she didn’t even pause when she realized how uncharacteristically clammy Kara’s palm was in her own. She quickened her steps, caught up in the intoxicating aroma of Kara asserting itself, and noted the feverish hue to the alpha’s cheeks.
“I don’t care what they think of me. I only care about you,” Lena whispered, overcome by the potency of Kara’s pheromones.
Lena hoped they were headed to the break room, or somewhere she could grovel to Kara sexually without the risk of an audience.
Possessive scents blocked her off from the rest of the office, but Lena wouldn’t feel like she had fixed their relationship until they talked it all out and she at least made amends with a blow job or two.
She wasn’t prepared for Kara to place a hand on the small of her back and escort her off the work premises entirely.
“Can you ever forgive me for how I acted?” Lena whispered during their elevator ride down to the first floor.
Kara hunched over with one hand on the side of the elevator and a trickle of sweat sliding along her hairline. “You made me ambrosia.”
Depending on how Lena looked at it, she could have considered that a good or bad thing, and she wondered which it was for Kara as they stepped out into the lobby.
Two minutes later, she found herself in the back of what seemed like a private car, and she noticed a bunch of different snacks and items she had seen on the shelves of the alien convenience store. She lifted a can of seltzer just to have Kara pull it from her hand.
“Wait, wait, that’s not for human consumption,” Kara warned and popped off the lid to show how it bubbled more like soup than soda.
On the bright side, if Kara wanted to end her, she could have just given her a sip of that odd Kryptonian hell brew.
Lena watched Kara gulp the whole can in fascination and tried to make sense of the growing scent of the alpha’s pheromones. She was almost bowled over by it in such an enclosed space.
“I love you, Kara, and I promise from now on, I will let everyone in the universe know that,” Lena expressed earnestly and coughed on the amount of alpha pheromone that assaulted her throat and lungs.
Kara soothed her worries by taking her hand, but also activated a whole bunch of new ones. “I know, Lena. It’s not everyday that the woman of my dreams asks me to enter a life union with her. I’m still a little bit upset, but I think that has more to do with what just happened at work and your ambrosia setting off a super rut.”
There was so much about Kara’s response to her that Lena found daunting and confusing, but far it be from her to mention that when there was tenuous peace between them. She would worry about the phrases life union and super rut at some other point in the future.
She slipped her hand into Kara’s and eyed the suddenly straining erection that looked like a whole baguette stuffed down the alpha’s pants.
“Now might be a good time for me to ask where we’re going,” Lena intoned with a precautionary glance around and towards the driver in the front seat.
They weren’t in the type of vehicle where she could roll up a screen, or so it seemed until Kara hit a button and the space between them turned black.
“We have to complete your ritual,” Kara huffed and grabbed Lena’s hand to guide it straight to her cock. “I’m really sorry about this, Lena. I would have preferred to wait until after we take the final steps of the ritual, but the ambrosia is hitting me so hard.”
