Description: Long ago, Alphas were once the rulers of the universe, until their greed for power ruined planets with intergalactic war. In a bid to end their destruction, the new ruling classes have stripped alphas of their rank in all societies across the galaxy, forcing them to be little more than combatants to entertain the masses. AKA Kara is a Kryptonian gladiator.
This was someone's requested prompt some time last year. It's been on my personal list for a while, and the top tier patron gave me a lot of leeway in how I executed it, so I decided to go with a futuristic interpretation.

The seven-rank class structure was an outdated institutional tool, or so claimed the Beta Guild in a holographic lettergram that appeared one day on Kara’s broken old receiver. It had been a bunch of scrap parts before she put them together, and now it could crackle out a tune or the news. On the nights when the coliseum was silent, and no one called upon her to entertain guests with a skirmish, Kara often tinkered with tech. It broke all of the laws that prevented her from leading more than a spartan existence.
As a Kryptonian, Kara belonged to a dying race, and her planet was a war-ravaged landscape without breathable air or unpolluted water. The few Kryptonians that survived in that environment had all been sold to the same brutal lanista from the Andromeda galaxy, who had finished most of them off through constant training and fighting.
Kara was one of the last.
She listened to the message from the Beta Guild twice, then switched off her receiver to curl up on the mat where she slept.
The lettergram was all propaganda directed at the classes of Delta, Epsilon and Omicron, whose human rights were never in question. The three classes had banded together to petition for more resources, more property. As a group, Deltas tended to be passive aggressors, while Epsilons lacked the wherewithal to argue. Omicrons used their wits to convince others to fix problems for them. None of the other classes were outright aggressors like Alphas, who had led for so long through brawn and belligerence.
Alphas changed history, but they also ruined entire planets with their will-to-power, and that was the reason for turning them into gladiators, stripping them of their rights and any resources that could have positioned them to lead again.
Kara would have much rather listened to some music before bed. She had cultivated an attitude of acceptance over the years that allowed her focus on what mattered most — remaining in peak physical condition and performing in the arena.
The large room where she lived was like a barn where all of the alphas from the same lanista slept and ate and trained. Kara peered over at the makeshift sleeping accommodations. On a blanket positioned over a bed of straw, Alex was already in deep sleep. She had become like a sister to Kara since her arrival. To Alex’s left was a scrappy fighter named Sam and a quick-footed gladiator called Barry. More than a dozen alphas resided on the floor, and each of them was subdued if not calm before bed. There was a general unease to their collective sweat, the fear of death mingling in with the faint scent of rut.
Kara folded her tawny arms behind her head and fell into a dreamless sleep, one that mercifully disrupted her morbid thoughts.
The next time she contemplated her mortality, she was in the arena with a shoddy wooden shield and a pair of sandals with a broken strap. She kicked off the flat sole and eyed the champion who waited across from her for the signal to engage. His burliness gave him an advantage, one that he exploited by throwing himself at her with a roar.
Kara had no chance to adjust her footing and dropped out of the way rather than hitting him with her sword. She circled around her opponent and the sea of spectators screamed to encourage bloodshed.
“This is why your species nears its end. Where is your fight?” The champion snarled, raising his fist to embolden the crowd's thirst for battle. He struck his own chest, his gnarled purple knuckles leaving indents in his breastplate that he had been fortunate to win when he survived the last event.
Kara knew him only by reputation and the loss he had carved out of her lanista’s hoard of dwindling alphas. The jeering of the spectators rivaled his bark of laughter and Kara derived a sense of pleasure from ending it with a fast strike to his bicep. The sword she used was duller than his personality, but her brute strength saw that she cleaved into his muscle.
“Right here, and buried twice as deep as my blade,” Kara confided through tight rows of gritted teeth.
She snarled into his face and grunted when he swung a backhand that sent her careering to the right. He followed after her with a wild lunge, stabbing into the air by her face. She would have been blinded if not for her forethought to use her own momentum to drop and roll out of his reach, and he stumbled in his aggressive pursuit to catch her.
Kara kicked at his ankles, sweeping his legs out from under him as she sprang onto her feet. She no sooner stood up than he slashed at her shins, slicing a clean cut across her tanned skin. Blood seeped out at a delay, crimson and thick, and he bellowed at her ability to retreat before she sustained a greater injury.
“We’ll see how well you dance when I cut you down,” he boomed, flecks of spittle flying from his filthy teeth as he gnashed them together in rage.
“You rely on your bulk more than your brain and it shows,” Kara hissed, light in step as she rushed him from the side to strike him not only with the brunt of her shoulder shield, but her sword, which sank with ease into the gristle and bone of his ribcage.
He let out a howl of pain that shocked the audience and snared Kara by the throat in one large fist before she could evade his wrath. He dug his fingers into her neck and raised her high into the air as he sneered, “I’ve killed bigger and stronger than you, I won’t be perishing here.”
She gripped at his wrist while she sputtered for air, not to pry his fingers off, but for leverage to swing herself forward with enough force to embed her sword to the hilt where it remained in his side like a thorn. She ruined her other sandal and possibly the bones in her foot with the power she used, and they toppled together in a bloody and bitter scramble.
“You cannot beat me!” He screamed into her face, his fist connecting with her cheekbone hard enough to make her dizzy. She blocked his second punch with her forearm before it broke her nose and groaned in pain when he slammed his forehead into hers like he meant to crack her skull in half.
“I already have,” Kara seethed, taking no glory in her actions as she wrenched her sword free to spill his blood across the arena. There was no stopping the flow, no matter how roughly he clutched at the wound, and the onlookers fell into a stunned hush that erupted seconds later as they reveled in his death struggle.
“No, I am undefeated, I will not go!” He rasped, spraying crimson with his words as he desperately hacked through the air in an attempt to take Kara with him.
When he couldn’t seem to stab her, his anguish and anger permeated the arena and he threw his sword with all his might to try and impale her where she stood.
It missed her by several feet, and Kara watched as everyone rejoiced at how valiantly he fought off death right to his very last, wheezing breath. He was gone before he hit the ground a third time, his eyes still open, and Kara stared so long into them that she had to be shoved out of her stupor by another alpha entering the arena to challenge their own opponent.
That was when she happened to look to the stands, where cheers went up and all eyes remained on her.
Among the swarm of faces, just one seemed to be looking away from the horrors of battle. Her curled black hair was arranged around her face and kept in place by a woven wreath of foliage – white baby rosebuds and leaves. She wore nude omega class robes, light and revelatory clothing that stuck to her skin. Even from afar, the omega’s fair beauty was captivating to Kara’s alpha. Kara stared at the stranger until she heard her companions shouting her name.
“Kara, what are you planning to go another round? Get in here,” Alex ranted from behind laser bars that would slice through her if she put her arm in the wrong place.
Kara hurried over and the laser barrier dropped out of her path, letting her back into the safety of the underground prison to wait with all of the other alphas who shared her quarters.
Kara continued clutching her weapon until her knuckles turned white. Her callused palm hurt from holding it like that and she twisted the wounded part over the handle of the blade.
“Kara,” Alex repeated and settled down beside her with a relieved expression on her face. “I don’t know what our mistress is trying to prove when it comes to you, but that wasn’t a fair match. She keeps pitting you up against the most dangerous enemies.”
“It has entertainment value,” Sam supplied from the nearest bench and poured some water from a flask into her mouth. She reached out to offer it to Kara and glanced back towards the main arena where much less capable fighters skirmished with each other and mutually avoided bloodshed. “There are a lot of alphas who don’t want an automatic fight to the death, but it seems like you always get the ones that do.”
Kara stuck her jaw out and breathed a little heavier as she accepted the flask without comment. She drank from it absently, her eyes unfocused as she stared at nothing but the darkness which resided at the far corners of their confinement.
Even amongst friends, she knew better than to show weakness, to conceal the tremble of her dirty fingers that still balled into a fist.
There had been a time when she had spilled more wine than blood, when death hadn’t lingered on her shoulder, like an omen of what she was forced to become in order to survive – if not a haunting reminder of what lurked beyond her vision, silently waiting to snuff her out.
“That is because Kara is my most capable fighter,” came a voice from within the darkness near a door that led out from the holding cell. The whites of her eyes appeared first, and then a sharp chin and two kohl-lined set of eyelashes with a crooked, painted smile. “Aren’t you, Kara?”
The atmosphere amongst the alphas shifted to fear with a few shrinking in size to avoid the attention of their lanista.
Kara dropped her chin to her chest in spite of how rigid her posture became, and let her gaze land on the booted feet which encroached on her space. “Yes, Nyxly,” she murmured, not out of respect, but necessity to acknowledge the question posed.
“You say that like it’s not an honor to be my prized gladiator,” Nyxly sighed, sweeping her hand out as if she planned to engage the other gladiators to get their opinions. She scoffed at how they hunched over, the pungent scent of their unease forcing her lip up in disgust.
The smile on Nyxly’s lips twisted with the furrow of her brow and she stepped closer to take hold of Kara’s forearm and tug her onto her feet. With a quick push that placed her in the center of the prison, Nyxly circled her with interest, tapping at Kara’s chest to make her stand to her full height. “Don’t be shy, you should own your achievements. The crowd adores you.”
“They cheer for anyone who deals a killing blow,” Kara retorted bitterly, her teeth clenched and lips pressed together to silence another outburst. She hated being put on display, and crossed her arms defensively while the others sat and watched.
“Well of course they do, and tonight that’s you,” Nyxly commended her and settled her hands on Kara’s biceps to gloat cheerfully, “They won’t be thinking of anyone else for days. Take pride in your power. I certainly do.”
Kara’s stoic expression revealed nothing to Nyxly, and after a moment the lanista turned and stalked off with an air of expectation. She paused by the door that swung open and tipped her head to the side without glancing over her shoulder. “You know how I feel about waiting.”
The sound of fingers snapping provoked Kara’s alpha, yet she grudgingly followed after Nyxly, barefoot and biting at her tongue to prohibit herself from asking any questions.
There were privileges to winning, ones that weren’t often granted. Kara learned over the years not to get her hopes up, though there was no denying the sense of relief when Nyxly allowed her into the comforts of her home. A good night's sleep on a bed with a real mattress seemed like a blessing, though that would come later.
First there were rituals to perform.
Kara was filthy after the battle and Nyxly was gracious enough to afford her the use of a washroom intended for guests on her property. At least Kara liked to tell herself that. The truth was she knew better than to sully Nyxly’s pristine home without ridding herself of the dirt and blood from her body with the scented water that her lanista provided.
Then she adorned a pair of form fitting shorts and a small top that covered her chest and little else. She was more naked than clothed, though it no longer bothered her like it did the first time she was given the garments. She would cater to Nyxly by pouring her a drink and taking care of menial tasks before standing next to the lanista and awaiting further orders.
“You know what I like about you, Kara? You never try to impress me, you just do,” Nyxly explained once Kara poured her a glass of her favorite fermented drink. It colored her lips with each sip and she laughed as she appraised Kara in her attire. “Compared to the others, that makes you quite unique. Most attempt to weasel their way into my good graces, as if I’d reward that behavior, but not you. That's why you’re my favorite, your exquisite physique notwithstanding.”
“I thought it was because I was your most capable fighter,” Kara interjected, careful with the tone she used, lest Nxyly revoke her privileges. She narrowed her eyes only slightly, bracing in spite of the way she tried to appear relaxed in the lanista’s presence, and then raised her chin to meet the beta’s eye.
“Mm, while I do enjoy the sight of those muscles being put to good use in the ring, I don’t want to see you harmed. You understand that, don’t you?” Nyxly stressed, her arrogance diminishing along with her smile as she caught Kara by the chin. The unhinged energy of the lanista was laced with honesty, and she searched Kara’s eyes a moment longer. “I want everyone to appreciate your power, to see you as I see you. I’d never send you into the arena if I thought there was a real chance that you’d lose.”
Kara knew her own inscrutable face would give away none of her complicated feelings – either the skepticism, or her uncomfortable longing for someone to care about her. She pinched her lips together and kept a straight back as she refilled Nyxly’s cup to the brim.
At other times, Nyxly would have spoken to her throughout a meal, and afterwards fed her some scraps like a prized pet. Kara surreptitiously checked over the food on the table, the roast bird of prey and figgle berries, along with two loaves of honey date bread.
It took the door creaking open to stop her from lusting after the food and Nyxly’s only servant admitted a guest.
“You’re early,” Nyxly complained before even lifting her eyes towards a beta who entered. “Someone’s quite eager.”
With a disdainful smile, the beta strutted into the room and made a soft clucking noise for someone to follow.
“What can I say? Your proposition lured me in, and I wanted to be punctual.” The woman set her cool blue eyes on Kara, her glance like ice water and inspiring the same sensations and tingles down the back.
Kara avoided eye contact and folded her hands behind her with a determination not to stare. She had succeeded for all of a second when a delicate scent hit her in the face. The same omega who Kara had earlier spotted in the crowd was standing demurely at the beta’s side.
Up close, the omega exuded sex appeal with soft pouty lips and spilling dark curls. Her thick eyebrows and lashes and pretty porcelain features reminded Kara of women in paintings. She kneeled on a cushioned seat by the side of the table when Nyxly motioned for her to sit down and glanced shyly up at Kara without being conspicuous about it.
“Kara, this is Andrea Rojas, and Lena.” Nyxly gestured, eyeing the omega and Kara’s reaction to her. “Tonight you’re to rest in my home, and Lena will share your bed.”
Kara showed her surprise only in a glance directed toward her lanista, and that was all it took to inspire an enigmatic smile on Nyxly’s face. She had given too much away, though what Kara couldn’t be sure. She hardened her jaw and kept her eyes on the floor, willing her scent not to reflect her tumultuous emotions.
“Well don’t just stand there, I have a guest,” Nyxly admonished with an amused smirk, and settled on the couch where Andrea sat primly awaiting to be served.
It humiliated Kara to carve into the roasted bird that was considered a symbol of freedom elsewhere in the galaxy, when she herself was tethered to Nyxly. She made precise and controlled slices, and she plated the delicacy with a refined skill of someone who had learned how to please the one who held her in chains. The arrangement was careful, and the beak was snapped off and placed aside for Nyxly, a gesture that solidified the power the lanista held.
Andrea scrutinized her every move, and Kara refused to acknowledge how naked it made her feel to have a stranger's eyes roaming her body for any perceived imperfections.
“She is a fine specimen, I’ll give you that,” Andrea drawled without a lick of shame that her own interests wafted freely between them. The cloying sweetness was not nearly as delicate or enchanting as Lena’s, and Kara tried to ignore both as she knelt on the floor at Nyxly’s feet with her head bowed.
“Were you not amazed by how swift her victory was in the arena?” Nyxly asked, absently combing her fingers through Kara’s blonde hair while she ate.
Andrea hummed in affirmation, and her voice took on a slight rasp as she inquired, “The strength she poses is remarkable, how often do you train her?”
“I used to push her to do twice as much as the others, but now she has her own routine that far surpasses them. Came up with it all by herself,” Nyxly bragged, as if Kara’s will to live and her determination to stay in peak physical condition could be attributed to her in some way.
“Shame the others of her species weren’t as tenacious. There would probably be more of them alive if that were the case.” Andrea’s flippant remark opened wounds and Kara was fortunate that her chin already rested on her chest as she sagged at the reminder of how her people had perished.
It was no secret that she refused to end up like them, that she would do anything she could to avoid that fate. For all she was ruthless in the arena, Kara hadn’t hardened her heart nearly enough to sit and listen to them talk so callously. She tuned the rest of their conversation out with practiced meditation.
Kara’s knees ached and her feet were numb when Nyxly finally motioned for her to stand up. She expected to escort Andrea to the door, but instead they ushered her into to the room she infrequently got to indulge in during her overnight stays.
She wasn’t proud of the way she teared up at the sight of the bed with its soft sheets and pillows. The sigh of longing she exhaled stalled in her lungs when Lena entered the room right after her.
They barely had time to make eye contact when the door sealed them in and locked behind them, and it perturbed Kara how the omega silently shed the sheer robes to slink naked under the covers. For a moment, Kara stood with her mouth open and her nostrils flared, and then she turned to try her hand at the door. It wouldn’t budge, and the light fragrance of the omega tempted her alpha closer.
Kara managed half a step before she shook her head. Lena’s big, round eyes were pinning her to the floor better than any spear could have, and a sense of vulnerability broke through her facade.
In the mirror, Kara noted the bruises on her face and her blackened knuckles, and wondered if the panic she detected was Lena’s or her own.
Whether she liked it or not, her body was responding to the proximity of the beautiful omega, and with a fitful grunt she grabbed for one of the pillows and then dropped out of sight to curl on the plush carpet.
Whatever Nyxly and Andrea hoped to achieve by confining them together, Kara would make sure it didn’t happen.
Kara could hear movement on the bed, and the omega stood to tiptoe towards the door. She reached it only to be startled when it opened in her face.
“I came to check on you before leaving,” Andrea intoned and put out a soothing hand to cup Lena’s cheek without any cares to the omega’s nakedness. “You are going to have the most beautiful pups, Lena.”
Those whispered words seemed to settle the omega’s nerves and she glanced back towards the carpet where Kara was still huddled.
“Lie down on the bed, alpha, the floor is for dogs,” Andrea reprimanded and planted her feet like she planned to stay until Kara followed orders.
Kara begrudged getting up when her body ached, but she knew if she didn’t move, Andrea might call Nyxly to enforce their commands. She pushed herself up and grabbed her pillow, smashing it into a comfortable arrangement for under her head.
Once Kara settled in, Andrea uttered a few more soft words to Lena and departed. The omega stayed at the door for a minute before sliding in beside Kara.
With the uncertainties in the air between them, Kara expected that the omega would keep to her own side of the mattress, but Lena cuddled in against her back.
A tremble of trepidation in her arm was the only sign of her discomfort, and it was gone with an exhale.
Neither of them spoke, and Kara did not encourage the contact any more than she shunned it. In the quiet room, under the light press of sheets, they shared warmth and little else until the steady breaths of the omega signaled she had fallen asleep.
Only then did Kara relax, her own muscles loosening into the embrace to derive a comfort she hadn’t known in many years. There were no nightmares when sleep pulled her under, no restless twisting or cold sweats that often accompanied slumber, and she was well rested when she opened her eyes the next morning.
She woke before Lena, conscious of her warm, supple body nestled into her side, and she extracted herself from the omega’s arms before her alpha had any say in the matter.
Kara would have preferred to leave, to return to the other alphas and the squalor of their den. She would rather face another round in the arena if it meant she could get away from the delicate creature in the bed.
Lena stirred at the loss of her warmth, and stared up at Kara like she could not fathom her in the slightest. Fortunately the door opened, and Kara strode out to find Nyxly waiting for her with an expectant arch of her brows.
“Well, how was it? Is she as delightful as she seemed?” Nyxly inquired through a smile that brightened her eyes with an almost manic gleam. She held her hands out, palms upturned as she awaited the verdict, and frowned when Kara couldn’t divulge the details.
“You don’t look nearly as grateful as you ought to for being given such a gift,” Nyxly uttered in suspicion, and stalked closer to note the lack of sexual pheromones on Kara’s skin. “Tell me you didn’t just spend the whole night asleep. I gave you a bed and an omega for a reason, Kara. I thought you would have figured that out.”
“We’re not animals, you can’t just breed us whenever you feel like it,” Kara snarled in offense, no longer biting her tongue as she should have been. She clenched her teeth so hard her jaw ached and refused to glance away as Nyxly met her eyes.
“Actually we can, that’s the very definition of belonging to someone, Kara. It means we can do whatever we want with our possessions, and you happen to be mine.” The edge to Nyxly’s voice could be interpreted as a threat and the twisted sneer on her face dropped faster than it appeared as she reached out to grab Kara by the chin.
“I thought you’d be pleased. I saw how you looked at her in the stands, but if you’re unwilling to use her, then I’ll gladly find someone who will. I did pay Andrea for the rights to her womb, and I don’t like to waste things, now do I?” Nyxly left the question hanging as she caressed Kara’s cheek, and then waved her off to fetch her morning meal.
Kara lifted trays of rare delicacies from across the universe — enriched protein from an iron planet in the Pegasus galaxy, glazed fruits from the conservatorium on Mars, and a ground meal that she mixed into a porridge. A cloud of flavor hung over the bowl, and Kara placed it in front of Nyxly with envy.
She put all thoughts of Lena out of her head, and as soon as Nyxly dismissed her from her duties, she retreated outside to train. Some of her exercises were physical, and others mental. She lifted bags of stones, sparred with the other fighters, and jogged around the perimeter of the property.
With the awareness that Lena might still be somewhere nearby, Kara worked herself near to exhaustion. Her muscles glistened with sweat before she was done and she retreated into the shade to sit next to a pile of abandoned scrap metal. She rested with her eyes closed, inhaling the spiced scent of the trees and peach grasses. An abundance of fruit bearing plants grew all around the fields, and Kara bit into one of the ripe purmelons to eat its juicy pulp.
By midafternoon, Kara walked to the bath houses and stripped down her loin cloth to slide into the heated water. She needed the soak to loosen her back and cleanse off the dirt, and she was just beginning to unwind when she heard soft footsteps across the stones.
Lena stood several paces away, observing her with brazen interest. Omegas had never been permitted inside the bath houses, but she seemed unbothered as she settled down at the edge of the water.
“You don’t wish to breed me,” Lena uttered with an offended scrunching of her eyebrows. “Is there something you find displeasing about my appearance?”
The question lingered between them like the steam rising from the water and Kara offered nothing but silence in return. She would have liked to have kept it that way, if only Lena hadn’t disrobed where she sat to let the sheer silks bare her beautiful breasts for inspection.
“Am I not to your tastes?” Lena asked, her cold tone and raised brow in no way easing Kara’s hot blooded response to her provocative display. She parted the silks all the way down with only a finger, and then proceeded to do the same with the pale and pretty lips of her cunt. The sparse hairs that sat above it were trimmed neatly, though Kara’s eyes were certainly not appreciating them when Lena showed off the slick gloss that clung to her finger. She swirled it upon her skin, painting around her areolas to draw Kara’s attention back to her pebbled nipples.
All at once the scent of the omega reached Kara across the baths, sweeter than the fruits Nyxly favored and infinitely more enticing to Kara’s alpha.
“We know nothing of one another,” Kara deflected, her arms resting on the tiles in a practiced dominant pose that gave away none of her internal stress.
“How do you plan to know me if you run off?” Lena inquired, cutting straight through Kara’s posturing as she toed the water. The soft ripples spread toward Kara, and then Lena pushed off the side to join her in the baths. “Is the strong, formidable alpha that dominates the arena afraid to be alone with an omega?”
“What—nuh—no, that’s not why—” Kara sputtered and cast her eyes up to the fresco on the high ceiling that depicted the grand court of their ancestors who decided all of their current laws. She refused to take a breath of the omega’s pheromones until her lungs burned and she gasped for air.
Lena laughed at her foolishness and came near just as Kara swam away. “Alphas are strange things, aren’t they? Most just want to sow their seed and don’t care one lick about their progeny.”
Droplets of water clung to Lena’s breasts and neck, and Kara couldn’t resist following the trickle across the omega’s skin with her eyes.
They danced around the edges of the baths, never gaining any ground on one another due to Kara’s resistance to allowing Lena closer. It reminded her of the arena when opponents circled the outskirts of the ring before a battle, except her sword wasn’t made of metal, though it still pointed at Lena beneath the water.
“Most don’t get the chance to care, given the short nature of our lives,” Kara retorted with far more force than she meant.
It aggrieved her to be perceived as someone uncaring, a beast born for battle and little else. To sire a pup was perhaps the only legacy an alpha could hope for and she grunted at Lena’s assumptions.
“By your standard, omegas are only vessels for life. It doesn’t seem fitting to be reduced to that, now does it?” Kara’s smile held less warmth than the water they were in, smug in spite of the bitterness. She kept herself moving out of Lena’s reach, even though her alpha rallied against her avoidance.
She expected a rebuttal, a sparring of words that would perhaps encourage Lena to leave, but the omega merely stared at her a moment longer and then vanished beneath the water out of sight.
Lena surfaced soon after, right in front of Kara and dripping rivulets from her long black hair. The streams fell over the omega’s open lips, and she blinked at Kara with inquisitive eyes.
It happened so fast that Kara wasn’t prepared and gasped at how Lena crowded her on the edge of the pool.

If there’s one thing the final season did for us it’s give us some fresh antagonist (thank god).
