It seemed that Clark’s appearance helped in quieting everyone down, with several betas pointing him out and muttering to each other.
Clark sighed in weariness and pulled Lena closer to guide her to a standing place that was safer. “The betas are petitioning for the right to property today, and I fear this celebration may become a riot before the afternoon is through.”
“Why did you keep this to yourself?” Lena complained with a sharp glance around at all of the hopeful omegas who were far too filled with joy to recognize they were in danger.
“For the very reason I neglected to inform you of the ceremony in the first place — I meant to keep you safe,” Kara stressed with the same hardened eyes that once stirred fear within Lena. She stared down any that dared look their way and used the strength of her scent to command the crowd with the threat of confrontation.
“Refusing to speak about these matters does not keep me safe,” Lena was quick to insist, though her voice was meek and she peered only twice at the gathering of betas who chose to align themselves with the few female alphas that postured arrogantly at the side.
“On the contrary, the less you know, the better,” Kara grunted in displeasure and stood taller still to shield Lena from the curious onlookers who were now marveling at the size of her middle.
The protective musk held a toxic potency that warded off the crowd and promised misery for those who dared to encroach on their space.
“I admire your courage to seek change, but you failed to consider the ripple of discontent that it would sow. You cannot rip apart a society to change the laws that hold it together, and while I doubt the council will truly entertain any input from the omegas of this town, the mere whiff of shifting power has stirred up conflict.” Kara managed to speak without the aid of her lips moving, and she kept her gaze forward as Mr. Edge and Samantha pushed through the gathering to greet them.
“We deserve a say in how we are treated. We cannot remain as chattel,” Lena hissed before her friend reached her, and then smiled at the soft cooing of Samantha.
“Oh, I hoped you would come,” Samantha interrupted with her gloved hands clasped together in delight. “It is only fitting that you be here, given how ardently Clark petitioned for this space for us all.” She seemed unaware of how sharply Lena’s eyes landed on her mate.
Had they been alone, Lena would have raved over Kara’s contradictory behavior. She loathed Kara’s overprotective spirit that led her to lie time and time again, and the mantle of Clark that Lena still misunderstood. It should have pleased her to find that Kara was her most outspoken advocate, but it made her irate that Kara never once trusted her with an honest account of her strategies. Instead, she had to endure her mate’s hollow speeches and horrible moods. Lena dropped her hand to her belly where little feet kicked beneath her ribcage, siding with her in outrage.
“I should like to stand closer to the front,” Lena intoned and reached for Sam’s hand to force her friend to accompany her. “You don’t mind lending me your wife, do you, Mr. Edge?”
“Not at all,” Edge replied and stepped towards Clark like he was proud to stand next to the most distinguished person in town.
Clark put out a hand to stop her, but Lena was already ushering Samantha away with a lie ready on her tongue.
“But wouldn’t you prefer Clark to join us?” Samantha asked with a curious backwards glance at the reluctant alpha.
“No, I was hoping to discuss a few details of my lying-in with you, and for that I would prefer if it was just the two us.” Lena rubbed at the bump in her dress and led Sam off towards a spot that was still at the edge of the crowd, if a little closer to the action.
The omegas appeared to be welcoming and many turned towards Lena to utter their compliments and express excitement about her nearing birth. At most other times, she would have hated the attention, but it boosted her spirits to be treated like she belonged with the other women. She was about to come up with a few questions for Sam when Mr. Baker cleared his throat and greeted everyone in attendance.
“Greetings, one and all. It is my honor today to dedicate this building behind me to the omegas of this town. With great pleasure, I would like to introduce Honorable Hank Henshaw, who has offered to oversee events here, including the restoration of the columns, and the purchasing of suitable literature for our wives, mothers, and even the younger omegas of this town who strive to make respectable matches someday. Mr. Henshaw is a learned man, a magistrate, and a member of our clergy. He has taken an interest in our plans, and he intends to bring many of his own ideas to the table. Without further ado, please welcome him.”
Claps and hoots went up all around, but Lena’s hands remained firmly over the swell of her belly. She stared up at the alpha who joined Mr. Baker and at the benevolence on his face.
“I need not take up your time when today is about the women who stand before me,” Henshaw proclaimed and gestured to the gathering as his eyes roamed over all of them. “I say open the doors and begin the celebration.”
It was no surprise that the small victory of obtaining a space for omegas was accompanied by a need for heavy regulation, and Lena lowered her gaze in defeat while her friends laughed in ignorance and made the most of the day.
Mr. Baker beckoned Mr. Corben forward to do the honors of swinging the double doors to the building open. Omegas surged inside, and Lena avoided entering in favor of seeking out Clark, whose musk preceded him and affected several omegas. Lena spied the rosy cheeks and how many of her friends paused to fan themselves.
“I wish to go,” Lena whispered the moment Clark approached, her eyes downcast so as to avoid the displeasure that was surely on her mate’s face. “This is not the triumph I expected.”
She did not expect the tender touch of her alpha’s hand cupping her cheek, nor the sudden loss of it just when she leaned in to the affection.
Emotion burned through Lena and she might have shown her indignation if not for Mr. Henshaw striding towards them. She understood that his sudden appearance explained why Kara had been quick to drop her hand. In deference to her mate, Lena stood aside and watched Kara posture.
“Mr. Danvers, at last we finally meet. You declined your invitation to join the council, and yet the members speak of you as the backbone of this town.” Mr. Henshaw’s deep baritone commanded respect, and he raised his hand to shake Clark’s, though his eyes strayed to Lena with curiosity.
Kara shook his hand with a steel grip and a stoic expression that did not reveal her true feelings. She released him only when she had need to wave at someone in the crowd. “They flatter me, just as they might flatter anyone who could raise their rent.”
Clark’s dry humor was not lost to Mr. Henshaw, and he laughed before turning his attention to Lena. “Mrs. Danvers, you are a vision, and so close to birthing pups. I’m surprised Clark allowed you out when you are nearing that time.”
“Oh, I’m not so near my time that he need worry,” Lena assured the magistrate and placed a hand over her plump middle. “It’s just that we are expecting more than one pup.”
“I thought that might be the case,” Henshaw assessed and slipped his arm through hers before she could shy back against Kara. “Where I am from, we revere omegas like yourself. Clark must be quite proud.”
“He is, most proud,” Lena uttered and allowed the magistrate to escort her into the impressive building that had Kara’s workmanship all over it.
She admired the long tables that were similar to the ones in Clark’s counting house, and the tall bookshelves where handsome leather bound volumes on law attracted her eye. Turning around, she peered back at Kara through the stained windows and considered the enigma of a person she married.
“You make a beautiful couple,” Mr. Henshaw praised, glancing from the mark on Lena’s neck back to Clark’s place at the door. “No doubt you will welcome many more pups.”
The aroma of Clark’s rut drifted towards Lena and she nodded, too bewitched by it to care that she was confiding in someone she scarcely knew. “Yes, I dare say we will fill our large household.”
Henshaw smiled, his eyes glinting with mirth as he touched the small of her back. “Well, then, let us celebrate that, along with all of your other great accomplishments.”

I feel like it's a good thing that there are people who can side with Lena in this, and Kara, and see both of their perspectives. They're both supposed to be products of their environment, and Kara is being over protective in stifling ways, while Lena also isn't stopping to think about why Kara might be acting like that. You totally understand Lena's POV! That's exactly right. It's not just a matter of the specific circumstances, but she also wants Kara to confide in her. I love your way of summarizing this -- exactly. If Kara had talked through everything with her, she would have actually stayed home in this instance. Next chapter might well be titled, "learning to compromise." 😂
The sequel will have a different feel than the original, I think, in terms of the conflicts that arise. There will be lots of breeding!

They're both definitely leaning back into old habits instead of using better coping mechanisms. I’m with impulsive, petulant, and petty Lena on this one! It is SO deeply irritating and paternalistic to have someone withhold information “for your own good” or “for your protection,” especially when Kara shared information before when Lena was more disobedient and less devoted lol. I think that’s why Lena bucks so hard when she defies Kara because she wants her trust above all and she wants to be treated as an equal human being with Kara and alphas in general. Her omega is also hella weak for Kara’s D and in previous chapters she has been way more amenable and understanding if she’s getting her back blown out and treated like an adult. They are still learning about each other and their buttons so hopefully these two stubborn fools learn to ✨compromise✨ better in the future lol

I feel for Kara with the over protectiveness but goodness she kinda tied her own self to the post so to speak with not being honest with Lena. Lena sure is impulsive and headstrong in this one but Kara not giving her news of town just seems a little overbearing. And certainly the need to protect is in hyperdrive but oof oof oof. The game of abstinence Is DEFINITELY a fun one for them though! Can’t wait to see how they sort their issues out!!

Overall I think they’ve come a long way as a couple and that will be highlighted in other chapters, but her behavior here was important for the main reason that she hasn’t completely changed over night — she still has this impulsive part of her that gets her into trouble (added onto pregnancy hormones) and Kara still isn’t trusting her to make her own judgment calls. They’ll talk it all out and good will finally come of it, but I don’t think Kara would have been okay with her meeting Henshaw in this chapter in any other way and she needed to meet Henshaw. I hope that makes sense and that you’ll like that the next few chapters include softer interactions between them as they learn to trust each other more completely.
