Lena Luthor had a long history with Kara Danvers, dating as far back as the second grade when they shared a seat on the bus. At age seven, Kara wore thick glasses and corduroy overalls, and her mother tied her blonde hair up in unfortunate pigtail braids with blue ribbons that hung off her ears like bicycle streamers. She tended to stutter over her words out of nervousness and she was too shy to read aloud in class.
One of the snot-nosed little boys in their class liked to pull gum out from behind the patches on the bus seats and stick it into Kara’s hair, and Lena spent an entire year blackmailing him and anyone else who chose to pick on her helpless little friend.
By sixth grade, Kara hit a growth spurt and started to take more of an interest in dressing herself, but she still picked out striped turtlenecks, weird sweater vests, and textured trousers from the LL. Bean catalog, and Lena couldn’t seem to change that.
Entering high school helped a bit, with Kara favoring button downs and slacks in neutral colors, but it still dumbfounded everyone in their grade when Lena’s friend presented as an alpha. No one quite believed it, and more than once Kara’s locker was raided in search of a high-potency scent masker. In fact, it was Lena’s girlfriend at the time who led the witch-hunt - Andrea Rojas, with her petty dislike of anyone who was too different, especially Kara Danvers. During the last year in high school and first year of college, Kara became her safe place — the person who helped her through break-ups, and rubbed her back when she drank too much during college orientation week. Through common interests, they had both ended up at the same school, and Lena spent a fair amount of time in Kara’s dorm bed, reading through her textbooks, making notes and even falling asleep when their review sessions stretched too late.
By October, most of the freshmen alphas on Kara’s floor assumed they were sleeping together, and Lena mercifully didn’t contradict that, despite never once entertaining the possibility. Midterm week arrived, and she practically lived in Kara’s room, huddled under three of her friend’s blankets and eating instant mac n’ cheese from her Squid Game mug that appropriately warned: Do Not Converse Without Permission.
While she was distracted one night by problems in her calculus notebook, Kara brought up the subject of Halloween week.
“Are you planning to dress up? I thought it could be fun if our costumes match—”
“You know me, I don’t really dress up for Halloween, since all of the omega costumes involve showing too much cleavage or wearing fuzzy animal ears.” Lena smirked and stuck another tab onto a page that was already covered in four other tabs. “I’ll probably throw something together.”
That was the first and last time she thought about Halloween until after midterms were over. Halloween fell on a weekend, but students held parties for the entire week beforehand, and more than one frat house was hosting events that Lena wanted to attend on the first night. Her roommate Nia bullied her into wearing a costume, and Lena showed up to a house party with plans of grabbing one drink, but what she saw that night inspired her to drink several.
With a curl to her hair and no glasses in sight, Kara stepped through the door dressed like a cowboy, with a bandana around her neck and a short-sleeve shirt that revealed the bulk of her upper arms.
Lena couldn’t avoid staring, and she was horrified to realize that she was wet as Kara came over to greet her.
“Hey, pretty lady, what are you drinking?” Kara asked with a grin and tipped her hat to stay in character.
“I have no idea, but it’s swamp green and tastes like literal poison,” Lena sighed and put her red cup aside. If her sudden attraction to Kara was the result of alcohol, she wouldn’t have been surprised.
“Oh, well, let me fix you something a little sweeter,” Kara offered and put out her arm to escort Lena towards the kitchen where plenty of mixers and bottles were set out.
Kara poured sodas for them both, and Lena was grateful for feeling tipsy, because it gave her an excuse to cling to her friend’s arm without being weird about it. “What are you supposed to be?” Kara asked with a glance down at her dress that lingered as she must have been figuring it out. “A vampire?”
In an uncharacteristic moment of weakness, Lena had agreed to borrow a velvet cape from Nia, which she wore with a long slit skirt that was part of her normal wardrobe and a pair of knee- high boots. Her black rose shade of lipstick and pale face sold the overall look without much effort.
“Yeah, it was a last-minute costume,” Lena muttered. “You wouldn’t believe how many alphas have already asked me to bite them.”
As she glanced around at the nearest omegas, she started to regret her own wardrobe choices and began to understand the appeal of showing a little cleavage. Every time Kara’s eyes wandered, Lena started to wonder which omega in the crowd had caught her friend’s eye.

She could name just a few omegas that Kara talked to on a regular basis, and that included her roommate Nia, and a junior named Kelly who was dating Kara’s older sister. By process of elimination, it had to be Nia, or one of the other freshmen omegas in a course that Lena wasn’t taking with Kara.
Kara laughed, red faced and adorable as ever as she sipped her sugary drink. “Come on, Lena, I’ve never hooked up with someone just because they smiled at me.”
Lena pointed at her friend in relief and thought of the crisis they just averted. “Good, that’s exactly what I’m saying not to do.”
It would have been a horrible night if Kara had opened up to someone and experienced her first big rejection—and if the opposite happened, and the omega was interested in dating Kara, Lena would have needed to coach her friend through the first stages of the relationship.

Lena narrowed her eyes in suspicion and wondered if the omega Kara had her eye on was attending.
Why else would her friend want to go so badly when she hardly drank anything in the first place? She pursed her lips in consideration and sighed, “I don’t know, Kara. You see how alphas act and that was only the first night.”

She had no idea how much she would regret her decision when she showed up later that night to find Kara already hanging out with the omegas of the sorority Omega Mu.

Kara sagged in disappointment and followed Lena as she retreated through the gathering of other students who were playing drinking games.
Lena opened a glass door that led to a balcony and blocked her nose with her sleeve as she suddenly became much more aware of Kara’s scent.
“Well, can you let me know if I should make the first move?” Kara shouted over music that blared from speakers inside, and then shut the door to trail Lena into the cool autumn air.
Lena gave the eight ball another shake and frowned at the outcome. “Signs point to yes.” She threw out a hand to restrain Kara before her friend could dart off and carry out the instructions of a cheap plastic toy. “But maybe not tonight. You promised that we wouldn’t be staying long.”
“True. Maybe you could tell me when would be a good time to do it. I keep putting it off.” Kara leaned into the balcony railing, content to just stand on the outskirts of the party and rely on Lena’s advice on how to handle her crush.
Lena sighed at her friend like it was a chore to shake the plastic ball, and considered tossing it into the bushes below. She wasn’t sure why it bothered her so much when Kara had always been there for her when it came to romantic interests, and reasoned that it must have been the rowdy atmosphere of the parties that were messing with her head.
She dramatically waved her hand over the magic eight ball and peered into the little window as she squinted and hummed, “Hmm, ahh yes, it’s telling me... I’m not drunk enough for this.”
Kara laughed at her antics and dragged her back into the party by her elbow before she could protest.
“Come on, I can help with that,” Kara assured her, and began escorting her through the frat house like she was some kind of bodyguard. They reached the kitchen where Kara grabbed them both a drink, and Lena barely managed to take it when another omega came from nowhere to sidle up to Kara flirtatiously.
“Hey, you should frisk me,” The omega insisted, twirling the tail of her tight catsuit provocatively. “I’ve been very bad.” The faux leather didn’t quite match the fluffy ears she wore, though Lena supposed that didn’t matter when Kara’s eyes were practically falling into the omega’s cleavage.
“Why, what did you do?” Kara asked after a delayed moment and pulled her shades down the bridge of her nose to gaze at the girl like she planned to actually interrogate her.
If homicidal thoughts came with an odor, Lena was certain her pheromones would smell like that by the end of the night. She glowered at the omega from behind Kara’s shoulder and stepped around her friend to answer for the girl.
“That outfit counts as a crime,” Lena intoned and placed a hand over Kara’s forearm to stop her from following through with the ridiculous request for punishment. The girl chuckled and reached out to take Kara’s other arm. “I’m a cat, stupid. Not a camel. Kara, will you please just help? I need someone dressed like a police officer or a special agent to frisk me.”
Lena stiffened at the use of Kara’s name and her lip trembled in envy as the random omega handed over a sheet of paper. She saw Eve was written at the top, and several different boxes listed activities to be completed by the end of the week.
“Everyone is participating in Halloween Hook-Up Bingo,” Eve explained and flicked her eyelashes towards Lena to glare peevishly at the obstacle she posed. “All you have to do is frisk me. Then I just have to find someone else who wants to play doctor.”
“Huh, I didn’t know there would be games, where did you get the sheet?” Kara asked, unsettling Lena, who had been hoping to have a quick drink and then leave before the alphas got drunk and started hitting on her.
“They have them scattered around,” Eve stated with an absent wave in no particular direction and then dropped her hand to Kara’s belt to finger the loop of a plastic cuff. “I saw some at the snack table. The winner gets a $20 gift card.”
“Thanks, Eve, I love competitions with prizes.” Kara pushed out of Eve’s grip in pursuit of the snack table.
“Hey wait, you didn’t frisk me!” Eve yelled after them, although only Lena seemed to hear her shrill voice.
“Find someone else to stick your claws into,” Lena warned with a glare and elbowed her way out of the kitchen to tail Kara through the throng of costumed bodies all laughing and dancing.
The snacks were all set out in giant plastic bowls and Lena wondered how many fingers had touched the chips that Kara peered at in longing.
“Here, check this out,” Kara yelled over the beat of the music, and lifted one of the bingo sheets to read. “Get a love bite from a vampire. Give a pirate your booty.”
Lena promised herself that the only reason she pressed into Kara was to look at the sheet,
and not to inhale the scent of her friend's musk, which was doing all sorts of disturbing things to her omega. “Make a werewolf howl?”
Kara was still going through the list like it was hilarious and laughed as she pointed out another, “Handle a Fireman’s hose.”
“Who came up with this shit?” Lena snapped and ripped the sheet of paper out of her friend's hand to crumple it up and toss it across the table. She eyed the crowd like she expected a hoard of flirtatious omegas to make a beeline for Kara and sneered, “They might as well have written I’m horny at the top and signed it A Virgin.”
It wasn’t until the words were out of her mouth that she realized Kara might take offense to them, and she immediately tried to backpedal. “Not that there's anything wrong with alphas who wait. That’s a good thing. It’s just that this is all so blatantly sexual, you know?”
“Yeah, but I can think of a lot of ways to get creative with these prompts.” Kara waved her hand towards a spot in the corner where an upperclassman dressed as a hot dog was collecting Hershey kisses and giving out free sucking candy. He paused to take photos with omegas to count towards a filthier box on the bingo chart.
“Oh god, I will buy you lots of candy and a $20 gift card of your choosing if you walk me back to my dorm right now.” Lena grabbed her friend by the arm before she could be swayed by the temptation of free chocolate.
Dragging Kara out of the party was difficult, even when she leaned forward with her full weight and pulled hard. She regretted touching her friend’s muscular forearm, and how close she came to touching something else, but at least she was able to get Kara moving. They headed back to her dorm, where they watched movies and sat two feet apart.
Lena had to take a shower on the coldest setting that night after Kara filled her room with pheromones.

She ate breakfast in the back of her first class and went out of her way to avoid Kara at all costs, going so far as to scribble a few ground rules for herself on the back of her notepad.

Lena underlined rule number four so roughly that she tore the paper, and spent the rest of the afternoon mulling over the fact that all of her troubles began because of the stupid frat houses and their Halloween traditions. She blamed the alphas, and their incessant immaturity that pressured everyone into dressing up. That was it, wasn’t it? She wasn’t attracted to Kara at all, she was just into the costumes.
Why else would her hands be so clammy when she had seen Kara almost every day for a decade?
Lena tested her theory by loitering outside the library to catch a glimpse of her friend, and sighed in relief when the sight of Kara in her oversized hoodie and sweatpants provoked nothing except quiet fondness.

It wasn’t like she was feeling depressed, and she hadn’t lied about needing to work on assignments. So what if she regularly checked Kara’s Snapchat feed to see what she was doing? Any friend who cared would do the same.
She pretended all was right in her world as she viewed a short clip of Kara in another costume. This time, Kara was clad in gladiator armor and Lena stared in fixation until the video vanished.

It comforted Lena to find out that Kara hadn’t attended any parties without her. She told herself she was just concerned about Kara’s safety, although it had been a long time since she had to defend her best friend. In the last year, Kara took on the role of protector, and with all of that muscle mass that had come out of nowhere, Lena doubted that Kara would ever need anyone to stick up for her again.
When Kara didn’t update her Snapchat story for the rest of the night, Lena was ready to shoot off a text just to check in with her friend, and maybe to find out if she was back in her dorm alone.
She never got the chance because Nia stumbled in drunk and giggling. Lena wasn’t sure if it was good luck or bad that her attention was diverted to her roommate.
“This is why I said to wear flats,” Lena admonished and almost shut the door on an alpha who wore more of Nia’s lipstick than she did. She balked when he pushed the door wide with a sword and postured in his ridiculous knight costume.
“Wait, I must make sure she has returned safely, so I may escort her tomorrow for another wondrous night out—”
“I’ll be sure to remind her how chivalrous you were when she wakes up with a massive hangover,” Lena sarcastically stated and swept the hair from Nia’s face before it went into her eyes.
“Goodnight, fair maiden,” The alpha intoned with his hand outstretched, and Lena grimaced at the way Nia waved at him like it was actually romantic.
“Farewell, good sir,” Nia slurred with a smile, like she wasn’t currently sliding down the wall where Lena had propped her.
“Bye,” Lena uttered, finally putting an end to their weird role-play by slamming the door in his face.
Nia was already crawling into bed and it took Lena a good ten minutes to help her wipe the make-up off her face before she imprinted it onto her pillow.

For another full day, she kept an eye on Kara’s SnapChat and social media with the belief that she could continue holing up in her dorm until after Halloween had passed.

Her peace lasted until around six o’clock, when she opened Kara’s Instagram page and froze at a tagged picture of Kara all dressed up like a superhero. The costume itself was made of a high-quality material, except it bared Kara’s buff midriff and the pants clung obscenely tight below the belt.

The large basement common room was packed with kegs and rowdy students who were dancing to the techno beats of a song when she arrived. Lena hoped her vantage point would help her find Kara sooner, but her friend must have seen her first.
