For two months, Lena traveled around Krypton learning all of the traditions of Kara’s culture. She ate cuisine that moved, bubbled, fogged and blurped back at her. Out in the jungle, she came face to face with creatures that seemed to be born of imagination—scraggly beasts that hid in the trees like branches and crawled out onto Lena’s shoulder when she least expected it, phantasmic behemoths with translucent hides and great big teeth, and the smallest insects that sang more beautifully than birds when the sun was high.
During the trip, Lena also discovered the meaning of the pink light on the fertility device, which Kara packed for the trip and carried into their tent one night.
Lena was sitting in front of an artificial fire produced by a compact box, and Kara sat cross-legged beside her to prick her finger with the device. It lit up pink again, and Kara confided that it signified she was pregnant.
Lena had never wanted a family of her own — but finding out that news brought her more joy than she ever thought she was capable of feeling, especially in regard to learning that there was a literal alien growing inside of her stomach.
After she recovered from her initial shock, Lena only experienced a sick sort of dread when she considered making travel arrangements to return home.
“We’re staying on Krypton, just until after the baby is born,” Lena impulsively decided without giving Kara the chance to negotiate and change her mind. “Think of how I was on the journey here. Can you imagine that in reverse with the addition of morning sickness? Not to mention that we don’t know what interstellar travel will do to a baby. There’s simply no way.”
They discussed a plan that involved settling down on Krypton for a period of two years, after which they would return to Earth. Except as time went on, it became apparent that their stay on Krypton would be unexpectedly long. Lena kept finding herself pregnant — not once, or twice, but three times. It reminded Lena of the phrase “three under three” from some horrible mommy melodrama that she tuned into one day when she was hungover in college.
After their third pup was born, Lena realized that she needed to impose some rules on Kara.
“Don’t come near me. You’re going to have to sleep in a separate bed for at least six months, and, if you go into rut, I’m sending you back to Earth by yourself until the rest of us are ready to join you.”
“You don’t mean that,” Kara insisted with the barest hint of hurt on her face. It was either from the thought of sleeping alone, or from their eldest, Zai, who was tugging violently at her ear to get her attention.
Kara held him in one arm, his little feet gleefully kicking her in the ribs as he tried to wiggle his way around to peer at his sister.
Elle was draped over Kara’s shoulder, gurgling and drooling down her shirt.
By all rights, the sight of that should have killed Lena’s libido for years to come, and yet her omega begged to differ. Lena swaddled their smallest bundle of joy, Luna, and protectively cuddled the newborn in front of her chest when Kara caught the unmistakable scent of her attraction.

Kara peered at her reproachfully and Lena resisted the immature urge to hiss when the alpha encroached on her space. She would have spent the rest of the evening avoiding the alpha if she could have, except she was honestly incapable of being separated from Kara for more than a few hours. She pouted at her defeat, which consisted of Kara leaning forward with a smile that predictably disarmed her defenses.
“I hate you,” Lena whispered out of love.
“I know, and I love you too,” Kara retorted, her pleased pheromones interrupted by the pungent aroma of a diaper desperately in need of changing.
Even that didn’t stop the alpha from kissing her first, and Lena moaned, despite the sudden pain of a small fist tangling in her hair.
Zai held on with all his might and Kara extracted his fingers one by one with an apologetic slant to her lips.
“I can’t wait for him to outgrow his grabby phase.” Lena sighed, cupping one of his chubby cheeks to see his whole face light up with love.
At two years old, Zai had the beginnings of teeth and a limited vocabulary that revolved around the foods he liked, vehicles that zoomed, and animals. He could already sing some songs and communicate most of his wants.
“He does have an unusually strong grip for a two-year-old,” Kara noted, reeking of pride as she peeled Zai’s little fingers from her own ponytail. “He’s advanced for his age.”
That much proved to be true when Zai was accepted to the best pre-school on Krypton and began a never-ending babble on different subjects.
Exactly two years later, he won an award for his tiny tot ambassadorship between Kryptonian and earthling children. By that time, Luna was old enough to travel, and Kara was desperate to stop using the entire range of Kryptonian contraceptives to avoid another surprise.
In the middle of winter, Lena packed up all of the children for their first trip to Earth and Kara took great delight in flinging out whole boxes of condoms and suppressor gels.
They took an afternoon flight, and all three kids squealed in glee and stared out at the beautiful cosmos in awe. Lena burrowed herself into two blankets and Kara and took a sleeping pill for the horrible journey.
Over the course of their stay on Krypton, they established their own family company that acted in partnership with Spherical Industries and served many of the same intergalactic clients. Two weeks before the move, Lena purchased a house outside of National City where they could be close to their place of work.
Soon after their landing, they burst through the doors of their new home with the same energy as a bunch of piranhas cleaning through bones in mere seconds.
The moment Lena opened up Doris’ little carrier, the fully grown cat ran up the stairs to hide from the chaos.
Elle and Zai ripped open their suitcases to get at their high-tech gadgets and toys, and while the kids played and made a mess of the living room, Kara shut the door and backed Lena into a countertop in the kitchen.

“You know this isn’t one of your toys,” Lena countered, gathering up the rest of their equipment that was somehow unboxed and scattered around like confetti. Her distressed scent called to Kara, who was having a tug-of-war fight with Luna in an attempt to take the device out of her little hands.
“Human children are very flammable. You have to be extremely careful on Earth.” Kara informed their kids, much to Lena’s chagrin, and finally wrenched their prototype free of Luna’s grasp. She held it up like a prize as Luna began to wail, and Lena hid it somewhere safe upstairs and out of their children’s reach.
When she came back down, Kara had herded the kids into the kitchen for a snack. They all sat at a table of their own size, nibbling ‘burst berries’ they packed from their Kryptonian home. The fruits exploded in a variety of colors on their tongues, and Luna giggled as her older siblings showed off the shades of magenta and turquoise in their mouths.
It occurred to Lena, probably much later than it should have, that her children would have to go through the same stages of adapting to earth customs that Kara had gone through.
For every lesson they had given their children, Lena noted there was ten more things they hadn’t taught or explained. Like wall outlets, which were too primitive for her children’s understanding.
Lena knew they were going to have problems when Zai removed one of the protective coverings from the wall and grabbed the wires inside as though he expected them to be some kind of candy string.
“But these look like the ones from the store,” Elle argued reasonably, comparing between the strawberry ropes Kara purchased and the red wires that would have been hazardous to any normal Earth child.
Lena suspected she would be spending a lot of time preventing her children from making mistakes that resulted in loss of life, limb and property.
A moment of crisis came one afternoon soon after the move when Andrea invited them all over for a playdate.
Andrea and Jack had gotten together shortly after Lena and Kara’s wedding, and they lived in a waterfront mansion with Remi, their only child.
Andrea snickered after Lena explained she had three in her short absence from earth. “You must be exhausted. Why don’t you bring your three around for a visit first and we’ll catch up?”
It happened to be a snowy afternoon when they traveled up to Andrea and Jack’s home, all dressed in puffy coverall suits, heavy coats, hats and mittens.
Andrea opened the door with all the flare of a woman who had been practicing her best arrogant smile and offered it to Lena before she flung herself at Kara. She kissed both of the alpha’s cheeks before linking their arms and guiding her through the door with total disregard for Lena and the children. “It’s so good to see you in person instead of a hologram! Come in, you must be freezing.”
Lena rolled her eyes at Andrea’s sleek dress and disturbingly long painted nails, and then helped Luna up the steps by taking her little hands. Her youngest happily jumped up them one at a time while Zai and Elle rushed after Kara. They almost collided into Jack’s legs as he strode out to greet Lena with the same bright smile as always.
“I was afraid you’d cancel your trip again, but here you are, finally,” Jack gushed, bending to lift Luna into his arms with all the grace of a father who was accustomed to carrying around his child. He pulled Lena into a one armed hug and laughed as Luna grabbed a fistful of his beard.
“How did you get so big already?” Jack asked, making his moustache wiggle like a caterpillar, much to Luna’s amusement. She giggled when he pretended to eat her little fingers and he led them into his lavish home like years hadn’t gone by.
“I wasn’t just popping out kids to avoid coming back, you know,” Lena argued, falling back into her natural habits as she slapped Jack on the arm.
“Weren’t you?” Jack teased, his amusement making his eyes twinkle. He turned to wave over his son and set Luna down to let them come face to face. “Remi, these are your new cousins - Luna, Elle and Zai. Why don’t you show them what you’ve been building in the garden?”
“Is it a robot?” Zai asked Remi excitedly, his enthusiasm for the construction of anything making Kara beam with pride.
It wasn’t, in fact, a robot.
Lena watched from the kitchen window as her children all stood around in perplexed silence and stared at the small, misshapen snowman that Remi and Jack had built. It wore a scarf and a hat, with a carrot for its nose and long twigs stuck out awkwardly as arms.
Lena missed part of the commotion outside due to Kara’s proximity and leaned into her mate affectionately while Andrea poured her a glass of wine. She was three sips in when she heard the little chorus of surprised ooo’s from outside and realized that Remi had snatched the carrot off the snowman to take a bite.
“No,” Lena whispered into her drink, her eyes widening as Zai grabbed for one of the snowman’s branch arms and snapped it in half to share with Elle. He had crunched his way through it by the time Lena sprinted into the garden, and by then, Luna had one of the snowman’s pebbles in her mouth.
“Darling, that’s not a sweet, spit it out.” Lena held her hand out and Luna recoiled with her jaws shut and tried to toddle off.
Lena wrangled her baby in both arms and pried her small mouth open, oblivious to the look of shock horror on Andrea’s face. Kara took the sticks from their older two and bent down to their level to tell them about the tradition of building snowmen.
“I blame Lena’s gene pool,” Andrea whispered to Jack from a place on the porch, where she must have thought she wouldn’t be overheard. “Did you see the way that little one just shoved that rock right into her mouth? You had better go and lift the dog’s bowls off the floor—”
Lena caught wind of the snide comment and saw how a frown formed on Jack’s face. He didn’t listen to his mate and instead strode down the steps to help Lena.
“Do you all like mints?” Jack offered in his thicker accent and popped the top on a small container of TicTacs, which he shook out into three sets of mittens for Zai, Elle and Remi.
Luna stuck out her hands last, and Lena smiled in thanks as Jack pulled out a tiny candy cane, which was better suited for her youngest.
“Tastes cool and somehow spicy,” Zai commented, looking up at Kara with a delighted grin that reminded Lena of her mate.
“Just wait until you try cinnamon buns and donuts,” Kara told him, clapping him on both shoulders out of pride. “I’ve really missed those over the last couple of years.”
“I put in a special order with your favorite bakery,” Andrea bragged and slipped her arms into a designer snow jacket to join them all in the yard.
“You know what I’ve missed? Snowball fights,” Lena slyly considered, already bending down to shape a snowball from the fresh and compactable stuff. “They can regulate the weather on Krypton, so we don’t have to deal with extreme temperatures, whether cold or hot.”
She peered over at Andrea for a long, hard moment and then lobbed her snowball straight at her nemesis’ chest.
Over the past few years, Lena forgot her petty hatred of Andrea, but being around her again brought back old memories. Her first act of war set off a chain reaction and her kids scrambled to grab at the snow and participate in the fun.
Remi ripped the head off his snowman and threw it his own mother, and Jack kept his son in good supply by repeatedly passing him snowballs.
Everyone was dressed for the cold weather and none of them seemed to feel it much, except for Andrea, who shrieked in protest, “NO, no, put down the snowballs! I hate winter!”
Kara and Lena’s kids darted around tossing them at each other and at Remi, their joyful laughter continuing despite Andrea’s freak-out.
Lena patted them on the back as they passed and grinned at Kara, who placed Luna onto her shoulders to give her an advantage against the bigger kids.
“You okay up there?” Kara asked the little one and passed her the snowballs to gleefully chuck at her siblings.
“MORE SNOW!” Luna shouted like a hyped-up commander.
Lena chuckled at her children and smirked when she saw that Jack had cornered Andrea with the snowman’s body, holding it precariously for launch.
“Jack—I swear to god, if you hit me with that, there will be no snow-blowing later,” Andrea threatened, too chicken to step out from behind the deck where she was trapped.
To his credit, Jack did appear to falter, though not for long as Zai began a chant that all the children participated in with enthusiasm. “Throw it, throw it, throw it!”
Lena’s pride brought a beaming smile to her lips and she turned her face up for a kiss only to discover her mate was chanting along with them. Jack might have been losing out on some oral affection, but Lena was going to make sure that Kara got a lot of it later.
With all the yelling and laughter, Jack half shrugged at Andrea’s indignant stench and mischievously dropped the body of the snowman over her head. It broke apart beautifully, clinging to her hair and eyelashes and leaving her every bit as powdered white as the donuts she ordered for Kara.
Andrea’s scream was delayed, and she stormed into the house, leaving chunks of snow in her wake as she hissed spitefully, “You can sleep in the guest room tonight!” She stopped Jack in his tracks by closing the door so that he couldn’t follow her, and for a moment, Lena felt awful.
Jack hung his head in embarrassment, and Lena would have comforted him, except Zai and Remi reached Jack first. They cheered and clapped like he was a hero and their excited chatter brought a dopey smile back to Jack’s face.
“Who is ready to warm up with a mug of hot cocoa?” Jack asked the kids and laughed when everyone, including Kara, stuck their hands up.
“I’ve really missed you two and all of your shenanigans,” Jack confided once they were back inside and huddled around the kitchen island.
Lena helped him with the hot cocoa prep and Kara entertained the kids with a can of whipped cream, holding it up and squirting little dollops of it into their waiting mouths.
“We’ve missed you too, Jack, even though I’ll probably always question your sanity, since you’ve ended up with Andrea. How the hell did that even happen?”
The words were no sooner out of Lena’s mouth than the witch herself walked in with freshly done makeup and a new dress that showed off her voluptuous figure. If the cut was any lower, she could have breastfed a newborn without the need to move any fabric.
“Well, that answers that question,” Lena deadpanned, aware of the way Jack’s jaw slackened at the sight of his mate.

Elle helpfully grabbed a second box and held it up to Kara. “I like this Earth food, but why is there a hole in it?”
“So you can hold more than one at a time,” Kara explained and stacked three donuts on her middle finger to nibble.

Just being around her old enemy was a better form of birth control than any of the products on Krypton—not that they had any need to use contraceptives for the foreseeable future. Lena began shaking her head to decline, though it was Jack’s hopeful scent that gave her pause. She pitied him and the kind of night he would have alone with his wife.
Kara nodded to accept the invitation before Lena re-think it or come up with a valid excuse.
“We really do need to unpack, but I guess we can do it in the morning,” Lena grunted quietly, even if it dampened her mood.
Around four o’clock in the afternoon, they drove back home to get ready, and found Lillian already waiting in their living room to gather her grandchildren.
“My, my, look how big you’ve all gotten since I last saw you at Christmas time,” Lillian drawled and held out her arms to collect all three pups. “Now, someone tell me the square root of 784.”
“28,” Zai parroted off, always eager to demonstrate his knowledge of math. “Give me a hard one!”
“Why is the surface of Mars red?” Lillian demanded with the seriousness of a drill sergeant.
“From iron oxide!” Elle exclaimed and placed her hands on hips in imitation of Kara.
“And who is the best, wisest and most beautiful grandmother you’ll find on Earth?” Lillian prompted, narrowing one eye at Luna to make it clear the question was for her.
“You-ooo-you!” Luna pointed and clapped her hands together, taking pride in her sing-song answer.
“Three out of three,” Lillian announced and lifted her hand for high-fives. “You’re all very clever.”
Lena chuckled at her mother’s unusual way of greeting the kids and wandered off to get their bags for the night.
While she was gone, Lillian doted on her daughter-in-law, complimenting Kara’s newest inventions and muscle tone.
It was a miracle when Lena finally got all three of her babies packed up in her mother’s car and kissed them goodnight. Kara became a little teary eyed while waving to them but smiled through her mixed emotions as Lillian drove off.
“Did I ever tell you how adorable it is that you still get choked up when our parents take the kids for one night?” Lena asked, smiling from love and from personal reflection.

For months, Lena had been saving a dress for a special occasion, which she assumed would be their first date back on Earth. The light-spun material was sourced on another planet and the color was as green and as lucid as her eyes.
