Kara fidgeted with the side of her cape, and Lena tensed her jaw in preparation for the grilling about to take place. Whatever happened, there would be nowhere to hide, and Lena resolved to put her entire heart into the interview not just to save face, but to take the pressure off Kara.
“Lena Luthor, you were the last person I ever thought would want a relationship with a Kryptonian, given your family's history. Aren’t you concerned that Lex’s followers will come after you to find out Supergirl’s secret identity?” Cat posed the question succinctly and yet left a lot unsaid as she pinned Lena with a fierce look. She waited with her brows raised and wrote something on her notepad when Lena sat forward.
“Let me be clear, I don’t know Supergirl’s secret identity. Lex will forever be a thorn in my side regardless of what happens. I’ve dealt with assassination attempts long before I came to National City, and that had nothing to do with who I was dating.” Lena’s calm eloquence went a long way in selling her lie to the camera, but she could see that Cat wasn’t buying it.
“Do you really expect the people of National City to believe you’ve entered into a serious relationship without knowing your partner’s real name? Are we supposed to assume you call her Supergirl in your everyday life?”
“I prefer to call her darling above all else,” Lena supplied with a soft and besotted smile that she directed to Kara, who brightened and blushed with unmistakable adoration. “Anyone in a relationship knows that terms of endearment work just as well as saying one another’s name. Cat pressed a pen to her lips and narrowed her eyes at them. “And what will you do if you decide to have a pup? Will that child also call you Supergirl?”

Dust and debris created a cloud that obscured the attackers as they rushed into her apartment. Lena didn’t need to see their masked faces to know this was an orchestrated kidnapping attempt. She dropped to her knees not in fear, but in preparation to grab the tech she stashed beneath her coffee table for situations like these. She had just clutched it to her palm when a smoke grenade exploded in her hallway, and Cat Grant let out a shriek as someone grabbed her from behind.
Lena sprang up, extending a metal rod with a click to activate charged spikes that sparked with electricity. She would have swung it if Cat hadn’t stabbed the thug’s hand with her pen no less than three times and scrambled out of his reach.
“That was a gift from President Marsden. Remind me to thank her later,” Cat rasped, extending her arms to shove Lena to safety as a gunshot rang through the building.
The cameraman still filmed the chaos, even as he kicked at a goon who lunged for them. One of the technicians swung a boom mic to trip an attacker as they tried to locate Lena.
“I have a safe room, a walk-in closet–” Lena blurted as they huddled in the kitchen.
“Good, go there, and take my crew with you,” Cat instructed and ignored the knives in the cutting block in favor of grabbing the kettle. She gripped it like she planned to fight everyone off and peeked over the counter just for Lena to drag her back down.
“And leave you here to defend yourself? Absolutely not! We all go or none of us do,” Lena hissed, already fumbling with her phone as she tapped into her apps to activate lights and music to disorient the goons.
Curtains closed and opened in different rooms and the fire alarm in her building went off, sending them all in different directions.

They moved as a group through the kitchen and towards Lena’s room, where the bed was still in disarray from all of their rutting. “Coffee table,” Cat asserted through clenched teeth as a thug burst through the bedroom door.
Lena tossed a robe over his face to blind him and Cat reacted impulsively by smashing a lamp over his thick head.
Lena let out a soft, scoffing laugh as the media mogul shrugged, and they both trampled over him as they scurried down the hallway.
Lena nearly fell headfirst over a ruined chair as she made a desperate lunge for the artifact. She rolled as she hit the floor and curled behind the couch as footfalls sounded through her apartment.
“Other than the significance of it being a memento, what is this?” Cat asked as Lena cradled the deceptively delicate-looking object between her palms.
“A night light,” Lena confided, sensing immediately that she shouldn’t have mentioned that as Cat stared at her with wide, incredulous eyes.
“We’re risking our lives for a lightbulb,” Cat griped in anger and slipped her heels off to throw one at a man who tried to sneak up behind them. It cracked him across the nose, and he yelped in pain before Lena decked him with a closed fist.
“Technically it’s a symbol of Rao’s light, and the only company Supergirl had for years when her pod was stuck in the phantom zone,” Lena argued as she helped Cat onto her feet.
They tiptoed through the wreckage of Lena’s apartment, and towards the gaping hole that used to be her front door. Inches from escape, a thug appeared with a gun, and Lena’s scream drowned out his sudden cry of agony.
Cat flung her arm out to shield Lena at the same time a heavy and thick mist of pepper spray covered the entirety of the goon's head. He clawed at his own face to try and get it off and Lena gasped as their savior stepped into view.
“Well, it seems I’m a little late to the party,” Lillian snidely assessed and ushered them both into the hallway like a member of the secret service.
“What are you doing here? Did you plan this?” Lena’s shock robbed her of her intelligence and Lillian drew her a look of disbelief.
“If I was behind this, it would have a certain finesse,” Lillian gloated, herding them into a stairwell as the power in the building went out. “What did you think would happen when you refused to heed my warning about going ahead with this relationship? Everyone who loathes you or Supergirl will be after you to find out her identity. And don’t act like you’re clueless. This puts you in danger.”
“As a matter of pride, I tend to condemn anyone who agrees with a known terrorist, but I’ll make a rare exception,” Cat sang out as they ran to the next floor of the building. “This may be the only occasion in which you should ever listen to your mother.”
Lena took all of their chastisement in stride as they descended flight after flight of stairs. The exit was ahead of them, and Lena grabbed for the knob just to gasp as Alex burst through the door in full tactical gear.
“Lena — it’s me. You’re safe now.” Alex peered warily over Lena’s shoulder at Lillian and kept her gun drawn. “Sort of.”
“My mother just popped in to let me know I’m in danger.” Lena lifted a shoulder in a weak shrug and glanced down at the Kryptonian object in her hands. “Any word from Supergirl?”
“She’s still at the school. Someone started a fire, and a lot of people would have gotten hurt if she hadn’t been there to save them.” Alex gestured for everyone to follow her out into the street where her armored car was parked.
Lillian hesitated at the curb and slipped her hands into the pocket of her cashmere coat. “I’m not getting in your car.”
“Unless you want Supergirl to airlift you, yes you are,” Alex insisted and signaled to one of the agents beside her to get ready to manhandle Lillian if need be.
“Well, if she’s going then so am I,” Cat cut in and flicked her fingers for Alex to step aside so she could slip into the vehicle beside Lena.
“With all due respect, Miss Grant, you can’t come with us,” Alex muttered under her breath.
Nobody, least of all Alex, expected Cat to size her up with a shrewd and unwavering stare just to snarl coldly, “Listen here Agent Attitude, I don’t know who you think you are, but I did not just fight my way out of a billionaire’s penthouse and run down seemingly endless flights of stairs to what I thought would be the bowels of hell to get my story just for it to end here. I’m surprised I never met Satan himself on the way down, and if I had, even he wouldn’t be able to stop me. So if you think you’re getting in the way of me escorting Miss Luthor to whatever seedy and secretive operative group you’ve got going on, you have another thing coming.”
Alex blinked at the forceful reprimanding and shared a look with Lena that translated to holy shit. She cleared her throat to recover from being chewed out and grudgingly relented by standing aside so Cat could take the seat next to Lena.
“I suppose after all of that I might as well tag along,” Lillian dryly stated and sniffed in disdain as she accompanied her daughter into the unmarked car.
They sped off and Lena stared out the window the entire time, hoping for a glimpse of Kara.
She expected more from the D.E.O. than to be escorted to a seat and left to fret for over an hour, but that was what happened upon their arrival. Winn Schott came down a staircase and ushered Cat Grant off, and Alex chatted with her mother in private before they all reconvened.
Supergirl touched down on the top landing, and it was her appearance that brought everyone back to the control center. Lena hurried into her mate’s arms, and she no sooner closed her eyes in relief than Alex shattered their peace with an announcement.
“Today we defended the city against several attacks, and we still don’t know who orchestrated them all. One thing is abundantly clear: their goal wasn’t just to cause terror. They hoped to kidnap Miss Luthor and torture her into revealing Supergirl’s identity.”
Lillian scoffed from the back of the crowd and swung her eyes towards Lena. “It’s one of the board members of L-Corp who’s in cahoots with Lex. Your brother raised a pod of baby truthseekers for your interrogation.”
“Which member is it?” The tone Supergirl used wasn’t the calm, kind one she had for justice. It was rough and angry, a partially formed snarl that caught in the back of her throat with the implication that she would destroy them personally.
“If I knew that, they would be dead already,” Lillian informed them candidly. She stared at Supergirl with distrust, and her upper lip curled in offense at the sight of her arms wrapped around her daughter. “All of this could have been averted if you had just picked her journalist persona as your mate in the first place.”
“You knew this whole time?” Lena gasped, not quite in anger, but annoyance that her mother of all people had known Kara’s identity first. She turned to Kara, who looked just as stunned, and held onto her tighter as Cat Grant approached.
“Oh please, a pair of cheap spectacles isn’t exactly a disguise,” Cat imparted with a slant of her lips and narrowed eyes. “Obviously I’m not about to disclose my protégé’s identity. The tell-all and accompanying article will reflect that Miss Luthor doesn’t know Supergirl’s identity, but that won’t make you any safer if anyone gets their nasty little hands on you.”
“Which is why, after a lot of consideration, J’onn and I have found a resolution,” Alex disclosed quietly, as if she already understood the push-back she would receive for even mentioning it. “Neither of you will like it, but it will keep you both safe while we figure out which board member is behind this plot.”
“No—not that, I won’t let you,” Supergirl snapped, her jaw locked and chest heaving like she might at any second take flight with Lena.
“Kara, it’s the only way,” Alex whispered and raised her hands like she hoped to talk her down from any impulsive decisions she might make.
“Would someone please clue me in?” Lena asked with a moderately grumpy glance between Kara and her sister.
“We need to wipe your memory of Supergirl’s identity,” Alex stated sorrowfully.

I'm really happy to hear that! I know several of you have been waiting on more of this one. I just wanted to make sure I had the right plot. It would have gone differently had I written this months ago, but I know what I want to do now and where I want to take it (and that has changed a couple of times). It took me a little while to consider how to proceed with this one and I don't think it would have turned out the same way had I written this sooner. It probably would have gone in a totally different direction that I would be less satisfied with in the end. I really wanted Kara to tell Lena the truth because at this point (with all of the mating and future pup), there's no justifiable reason to continue lying. **Except for safety-purposes, now with Lex & the board after them.** The night light felt like the perfect way for Kara to confess, not just because it brings up all that she's been through but also because it would make Lena think of future babies. ☺️ I really want Cat to have a role in this story! I loved including her in a fight scene because of the snark. I'm happy about it too! I was going to put a note at the top of the chapter like "stay tuned for surprises at the end" but it's more fun when everyone's unsuspecting of plot. 😂 Thank you!!!
I was caught in between a place where I wanted Kara to tell her the truth, but I also didn't want that. I could have continued with Lena only having the knowledge of Kara's identity (without Kara's confession), building a tension around all of that, but Lena would eventually become bitter. So this really is the best of both worlds, because they experienced the sweet confession and sweet bonding and now I get to play around with a mind-wipe. But don't worry - it's going to be fun, I swear. 💙 ❤️I'm doing pretty good, thank you! I hope you're well and everything is going wonderfully for you. ☺️

Oh damnnn. I didn’t see that coming. I hope they don’t have to wipe Lena’s memory. Especially if she’s pregnant. What an emotional and great chapter. Cat & Lena are a hell of a team. I loved Cat’s anger when she snapped “we’re doing this because of a lightbulb” that’s a perfect Cat Grant statement. Oh and her line “ the devil couldn’t stop me”. You aced those 2 lines. 😁. Lillian helping!? shocking to say the least especially since she had them locked up earlier in the chapter. Great update. Thanks for it. 👏👏

Eugh way to make my heart break for little Kara 😭 loved the tag team of Lena and Cat taking down a professional kidnapping squad with household appliances. She finally gets told the truth BY Kara only for it to be possibly torn away!? Say it ain't so! If it does Kara needs to go to the fortress and make a crystal with Lena explaining to future Lena why they did it 🥺 This is a roller coaster and I love it! But also living for the fluff ❤💙

I was so excited to see this one updated and BOY YOU DIDNT HOLD BACK!! Lena’s confession in the office was so good but also made me feel just AWFUL for Kara because there’s no win in that situation - you can’t just whip the disguise off there without looking opportunistic but WOW IS THE ALTERNATIVE NOT ANY BETTER. And Is it dusty in here or do I just have like a whole tree in my eye Kara’s confession and her little night light 🥺🥺 nothing gets me right in the heartstrings like thinking about how Kara’s lost everything and then you go and add the nostalgia and emotional importance of a nightlight I legit teared up at their soft(emotionally speaking) mating and affirming their feelings. LOVE LOVE LOVE Cat and Lena kicking ass through the apartment and once again Lillian with impeccable timing. Poor Alex is gunna have a stroke one of these days and NOOOOOOOO DONT WIPE HER MEMORY SHE JUST FOUND OUT NOOOO 🥺🥺😭 it felt like such a good ending chapter and then the floor fell out from under my feet and I’m SO HAPPY ABOUT IT. Ugh what a great job with that you never miss
Finally Kara revealed her identity and a in a very heart warming way as well. Goddamn they really made up with all that sexy and passionate love making. Why am I not surprised that just as things seem to be going so well for Kara and Lena someone always has to fuck shit up? Great chapter I really hope they find another way to keep Lena safe and not have to wipe her memory. Because then all of what they had to go through really would have been for nothing. Really don’t want Kara to lose Lena when they only just got together like damn the girl of steel can’t catch a break. Hope you are doing well and life is great.
