Twice a fortnight, the members of the Beta Guild gathered at the city center to deal and trade. Their bazaar attracted both local and intergalactic visitors, dressed in class robes that presented rank and status. Betas wore red gowns with armbands that stored data about their physical make-up, while all other ranks had their own assigned colors and decorations. On the infrequent occasions that alphas did attend, they were outfitted in black and secured around the wrists with silver bracelets that would incapacitate them should they rebel.
Kara often heard rumors of the marketplace from others who had gone for crude medical treatment or otherwise found themselves part of a trade. The avenues at the city center were paved in stones from more than five hundred worlds, encircling a memorial to the lost races who perished on their inhospitable home planets. Betas spoke of these tragedies at an alabaster pillar that represented the Guild, which they celebrated as the protectorate of truth, governance, and resources.
Apart from the attraction of these public speaking events, members of all classes flocked to the city center to form strategic alliances, and in the case of those who were lanistae, to enroll their gladiators in competitions of brutality and strength.
On the morning of the bazaar, Kara cracked one eye open to the strange spectacle of Nyxly perched backwards in a chair at her bedside.
The lanista propped her chin in one hand thoughtfully, like she had spent some time meditating in her current position.
None of the other alphas that shared the sleeping barracks were around, and Kara could hear them running their drills outside in the yard.
“Curious, isn’t it, that you’re sleeping in this morning instead of training?” Nyxly squinted at the anomaly of that and puckered her lips in a soured expression. “Did you pull a muscle while having intercourse, or is your head full of pleasant dreams of Lena? You had better not go soft on me.”
“I train harder than everyone else, and a few minutes of extra sleep won't change that,” Kara grunted, her avoidance of Nyxly’s gaze a sign of guilt that she couldn’t counterbalance with posturing.
Her dreams had been haunted with Lena’s visage and the memory of the heated silk between her thighs. That passing thought brought a throb to Kara’s cock, her alpha betraying her body by alluding to where her mind had wandered.
The sly curve of Nyxly’s mouth was unsettling Kara, and she chose to stand abruptly to begin her morning routine. Her slow stretches had taken a while to master, and Kara ignored the intrigued scent of her lanista as Nyxly raised herself off the chair to encroach on her space.
“You still smell of her, you know. She lingers on your skin, in spite of how long you stayed in the bathhouse to cleanse yourself,” Nyxly whispered, her breath so close to Kara’s cheek that she could smell the fruits the lanista consumed for breakfast.
Kara found herself breathing deeper in an attempt to detect Lena’s perfume and realized all too late that Nyxly must have been testing her in some way.
The lanista pulled back with a low and thoughtful hum, her enigmatic face difficult to read in the sparse light. “We have business to attend at the Bazaar this morning. There’s a special competition being held for the mightiest of alphas, and only one from each lanista can attend. Guess who I’m choosing to participate for me?”
Cold, damp dread spread across Kara’s skin and turned her limbs to stone. She could not bring herself to look at Nyxly, nor face the truth that she was going to be pit against countless others that would likely want her head for a glory that would never truly be their own.
“Don’t look so glum. You will win this, just as you have all the others, and later you will attend a party to honor the audience that watched your victory. Won’t that be fun?” Nyxly’s manic smile faltered when that didn’t rouse a reaction, and she squinted critically at Kara’s lack of enthusiasm.
“Lena will be there,” Nyxly lilted, her piercing gaze lighting up when Kara glanced at her sharply. She smiled again, all teeth and impish glee, and motioned to a heap of cloth by Kara’s bed that rested in the dust. “I thought that would please you. Now, get dressed. I won’t have us arriving late just because you exhausted yourself last night.”
The implication that the lanista would be staying to watch unnerved Kara, and a strange sense of vulnerability gripped her at being on display. She hesitated only a moment, though it was enough for Nyxly to sigh dramatically and intone, “Oh, stop being coy, I’ve seen it all before. Strip, and put those on.”
Kara shed her worn clothes that she favored for sleeping and kept her eyes on the ground. All the talk of Lena had her alpha on high alert, and her cock remained partially erect. It humiliated her to be seen in a state like that, and though Nyxly never mentioned it, Kara sensed she was pleased by her condition.
Kara donned the black robes of her class and stuffed her feet into a new pair of sandals that Nyxly had graciously afforded her for the trip. She hardened her jaw when the lanista snapped her fingers to make sure she followed.
The one anomaly was that Nyxly never fitted her with a pair of silver bracelets, and in the back of her mind, Kara knew it was because the beta already possessed a superior control mechanism.
They departed as the first gleams of light etched around the mountains and the clamor of gladiator blades rang out in the practice yard.
Kara took the trip by foot, while Nyxly traveled upon the back of a thorn-beast, a partly engineered and partly organic creature. The great animal had short, coarse hair all over its sturdy body, and hooves the size of a human head, but the face was all mechanical with vacant eyes.
The city center was alive with activity when they entered through the outer gates, and Nyxly spoke to the watchmen that granted her access to a sanctum below the trafficked streets.
Deltas tossed food and coins into a holding pen, where black robes swarmed around like flies picking at carcasses.
Alphas pushed each other out of the way to get a meal, striking and even biting at each other in contest for a bit of meat.
“This is the reason I won't have any dealings with Deltas,” Nyxly remarked with a sneer and pushed out her pointed chin. “They cry and protest against the games of the arena, but casually incite violence among your kind by doing this.”
Kara was smarter than to voice her own opinions of the other ranks. She took the opportunity to judge the fighting skill of her possible opponents, some of which came from far off planetary systems.
One of the alphas had a strident call and let out an animalistic wail that hurt Kara’s ears, while others sounded darkly predatory with inhuman vocalizations that reverberated.
Some moved in an unnatural manner, and Kara stared at the spindly leg of an alpha that then sprouted two others so it could reach a scrap of putrid meat. She didn’t linger to look at the rest or how violently they charged to get what little was given.
The arena afforded no honor in battle, though most who were thrust into the ring were capable of reasoning. Kara doubted that those in the pit were capable of anything other than destruction.
On the upper streets, merchants called to passersby, using omegas to entice the other classes into bargaining for their wares.
Kara kept her head bowed and tried to breathe as little as possible. The scents of the Bazaar were disorientating her alpha, and Nyxly seemed aware as she cracked open a small and iridescent orb that purified the air around her.
“I didn’t expect this to affect you so much. You never show signs of illness,” Nyxly huffed, her judgment heavy and oppressive as she steered Kara down a darkened path by her elbow. “Keep up, or they’ll think you're trying to escape.”
The lack of restraints on her wrists increased that danger, and Kara wondered if that was part of the reason Nyxly waived their use. Kara shuffled along in silence, her eyes flicking to the bright lights that danced like flames above a door that her lanista opened.
“Quickly now, we don’t have all day,” Nyxly sighed and shoved Kara into the peculiar little shop that resembled a cavern inside.
Crystals formed and protruded from the ceiling and walls, and Kara admired the strange vials that lined pretty, decorative cases.
“Stand there and touch nothing,” Nyxly commanded and curled her lips into a smile when a stout little being waddled over with a cane.
Kara couldn’t hear their conversation, but she understood that she was being assessed by the shrewd way the creature peered at her with narrowed eyes.
He promptly waddled forward to strike her across the back of the thighs with his cane and Kara snarled in warning when he did it again. The creature jumped back and hissed something to Nyxly, who rolled her eyes and grasped Kara by the chin.
“She’s not going to eat you, are you, Kara?” Nyxly asked, amused by the disgusted scent that Kara emitted. “Kneel down so he can gather a sample. You’re too tall for him to reach it.”
“Reach what?” Kara grunted, her teeth grinding together when Nyxly stared her down and into compliance.
Kara sank to her knees and winced when the creature took a slim scraping tool and used it to gather the sweat from her brow. He plucked a hair from head and then opened her mouth to gather saliva with a vial.
“Mefigulm specializes in ointments. He can tailor them to meet many needs,” Nyxly explained as stout Mefigulm made his way to the back of his shop.
Kara assumed whatever was taking place would provide her with aid after her battle in the arena, and she frowned at the puff of smoke that billowed out from behind a curtain. It smelled of evergreen and earthen richness, and the fragrant temptation of an omega in heat — raw and enticing to the palate.
She couldn’t breathe with a clear head until Mefigulm shoved a cork into the top of the bottle and delivered it into Nxyly’s waiting hands.
“Thank you, dear friend,” Nyxly smiled and clasped the vial delicately, holding it up to her eye to see the swirls within. “This should be of great help to us, and we shall most certainly be back for a better supply after we test it out.”
Nyxly paid in coins and shells, a mix of local and foreign currency, and then she gathered her red cloak tighter around her and led Kara back into the alleys of the city. They traversed a bridge over a small waterway, taking a different route back to the underground.
“There is still a short time before your performance, but I’d rather not confine you to that pen with the other alphas,” Nyxly intimated and swung open a door to a set of narrow rooms with a plain wooden bar and stools.
At one of the tables was someone dressed in white omega class robes, and she raised her hood before Kara came closer.
Lena peered up at her with practiced indifference and tried to hide her emotions by bending her head to greet Nyxly.
“Has Andrea left you here all alone?” Nyxly asked reprovingly with a sharp glance around at the lack of patrons. Other than one omicron who sat hunkered down in the corner, the bar was empty.
“No, she’s just in the other room with one of our pups,” Lena reported and glanced towards a red door, where no one except betas could enter.
Kara blinked in confusion at the mention of pups and wondered if Lena had birthed any in the past under the terms of a different contract. She tensed up from jealousy, her hand curling into a fist out of instinct.
“Your pups?” Kara asked, giving no thought to the offense she expressed with her eyes and the clench of her jaw.
“The pups of our household,” Lena corrected, her stern face breaking into a smile at the sudden appearance of a child.
The little one ran into her arms, and Lena embraced the girl and pulled her onto her lap to offer some of the biscuits on the table.
“I didn’t expect to see you until later,” Andrea remarked tersely, her smile wooden and eyes weary as she stared at Kara and her proximity to Lena and the child.
“The event begins soon, and I knew you would be attending. I thought it would give us time to discuss some of the finer details of the party,” Nyxly expressed with a calculating slant of her eyes. She motioned for Andrea to find a seat further away so they could speak in private, though the other beta seemed hesitant to move until Kara took a step towards the wall.
Lena showed no signs of discomfort at her presence, though she refused to acknowledge Kara or speak with her further.
With nothing to do but stand aside, Kara observed the omega with curious fixation, noting every smile, every crinkle that formed at the side of her eyes when she spoke in hushed words to the child. Their soft laughter became interspersed with the sound of chewing, and Kara’s frown eased from watching Lena care for the pup.
Lena wiped the child’s mouth with the delicate fabric of her sleeve and did not seem to mind when the little one held onto her dress with dirty hands to whisper in her ear.
Kara glimpsed pieces of Lena that seemed private, and she would carry the echo of the omega’s laughter all the way to the arena.
“Have your ears stopped working? We must go, or you will be disqualified from entering,” Nyxly hissed, grabbing Kara by the arm to end her enchantment. The ire in her tone went no deeper than that, and she smirked at the baffled expression on Lena’s face.
“You’re competing?” Lena asked, her voice no longer devoid of emotion. Surprise colored her face and she turned to seek out Andrea, then dropped her gaze to the child.
Lena’s reassuring smile did not seem as warm as before, and Kara experienced a strange sense of loss because of it.
“Why else would you be here? You’re all to bear witness, and she’s of age to watch the event, aren’t you, darling?” Nyxly crooned, pleased at the way the little one on Lena’s lap looked up at her with excitement.
“You know it’s important to condition them from a young age,” Andrea muttered and waved her hand to encourage Nyxly to leave without them.
Betrayed omega pheromones filled the air, and Nyxly escorte Kara through the door to afford them privacy, though not fast enough.
Lena’s distinct voice hissed out in confusion, “You didn’t tell me this when you proposed we’d raise these children together.”
The door closed before Kara could hear Andrea’s attempt to soothe the omega, but calming beta scents followed her into the alley.
There would be no point to question Nyxly about what would transpire between her and Lena or any of the pups they might share. The answers, if any were given, would only trouble her already unfocused mind in the arena.
They walked in silence to the area where large steps sank into a black pit of darkness, a pen where alphas were given over to handlers tasked with keeping their aggression in line.
Kara’s eyes could not penetrate the lightless void, but she could hear the beasts she passed earlier. The primal instinct of fear made her falter in her steps, and Nyxly grabbed her by the arm before she made her descent.
“This will be different to the arena you are used to, Kara. You must keep your wits about you and hold no doubt that you will be champion. I believe in you, so go make me proud,” Nyxly whispered, her touch almost tender as she cupped Kara’s cheek to gaze into her eyes.
The honesty that reflected in Nyxly’s bright eyes caused Kara to press her lips together. She stifled what little emotion may have been visible and stepped into the darkness without a word.
Two sets of hands grabbed her from the pitch black to drag her into a cage at the bottom. They stripped her down and gave her a new set of armor, lightweight and sturdy. It resembled a tactical shirt and the shorts came down to her knees with thick scaled pads. She wasn’t accustomed to having something so high quality, and it unnerved her when she realized that everyone wore a similar kind of garb.
She couldn’t see those that dwelled in the cages beside her, yet the sound of fabric being tugged on and the unmistakable snap of a metallic cuff latching into place coincided with the one she found being wrapped around her wrist.
Strange, stomach-churning noises filled her with dread, and she listened to the snarl and hiss of alphas she had never encountered before.
The many species she would face would have been a worry for later. She just hadn’t imagined she would find out so soon.
Kara grimaced at the sudden bright flash of light that illuminated her bracelet. All around her, the same burning yellow glow appeared. Suddenly the cage doors were opened, and she was ushered blindly forward into an arena so bright that she staggered.
The crowd roared in excitement as her eyes adjusted, and then Kara realized what was taking place.
This wasn’t going to be a fight she faced against someone else. The alphas were going to be pit against each other all at once, and their weapons had been left scattered in the middle of the vast arena.
A creature behind her lurched forward with a noise so crippling that several other gladiators ran in the wrong direction, and the beast knocked someone into the air as it charged.
Kara didn’t look back as she took off across the gritty arena, her sandals slapping the soles of her feet as she pumped her arms with the sheer determination to reach something before she was left empty handed.
Several alphas managed to beat her to the bounty in spite of her speed. One moved like smoke, shimmering in and out of solid form with silver eyes and spiked obsidian knuckles. The alpha grabbed a device that he twisted maniacally and threw into their opponents. Orbs scattered and bounced from its casing, and Kara had the sense to leap over them while the unlucky alphas trampled upon them. Explosions kicked up dust and blew off limbs, distracting everyone and dazzling the spectators.
Kara used it as an opportunity to skid into the fray of warring alphas. She snatched up a blade that curved around her hand with a flashing hilt that could be squeezed to activate something hidden within it. There must have been at least twelve alphas in the arena, the majority of which did not resemble her.
The one with the spindly legs had a grotesque ability to branch off its limbs. While everyone else had raced for a weapon, it had trapped one of the smaller, slower alphas in an organic cage. It decreased the size at a sickening pace to crush and mangle the alpha in its clutches, and Kara impulsively ran toward it.
She heard the captured alpha’s agonized screech moments before something large and muscular sent her into the air. The impact ripped the air from her lungs, and she hit the ground with a disgusting and wet crunch.
She lay in a puddle of goop from a fallen alpha and scrambled up as a beast with teeth larger than her fingers barrelled forward on all fours. Purple saliva covered its jaws and the ground smoldered wherever it dripped.
Kara pointed her weapon at it, frantic in the way she clenched her fist to send out a razored disk that bounced off its scales and cut off two of the spindly creature's limbs.
She grabbed for one of the convulsing arms while her enemy scuttled off, and then wielded the sharpest part as a spear to ram down the beast’s throat.
The beast snapped the limb in half, but not before Kara pierced it through the tongue and jaw, its mouth unable to close as it furiously howled and slammed into her headfirst.
“Get off me,” Kara snarled back, punching with her curved blade to slice into the broad snout. She lacerated the thing’s face and its saliva dribbled and soaked into the front of her armor.
She wouldn’t die like this when Lena and the child were part of her audience. The thought of the omega drove Kara harder, and she pushed at the beast’s face while uppercutting it at the neck with her blade.
Cold blood soaked her in fountains and made her slippery, and she wrangled herself out from under it as it began to huff and growl before sagging heavily. It would have crushed her if she hadn’t pushed herself free, and she cut off her armor before its saliva burned holes into her skin.
That delay cost her when the alpha who traveled in smoke flew at her from behind. His sharp spiked knuckles embedded in her side as he hissed something in a language she couldn’t understand.
Kara grunted at the pain and spun wildly to face him, but every punch she threw met nothing as the alpha’s form evaporated and reappeared. He toyed with her. She knew it as her muscles burned and her lungs tired, but she couldn’t let her guard down, and kept swinging until he backhanded her across the face.
The blow sliced the skin on her cheek open, and she veered backwards, at a loss for how to fight someone that couldn’t be touched.
“What are you?” Kara grunted, disturbed by the hollow sound of her voice rasping back from its mouthless face.
“What are you?” He mimicked, mocking her as he tried to suffocate her by entering her airways.
Kara gasped at the acrid stench blocking her nose and throat and stared into those silvery eyes that bore into her with perverse enjoyment as she valiantly tried to grasp at any material part of his being.
She flailed, falling to her knees while the fighting all around her carried on. Fumbling with her weapon, she aimed the correct way this time as her vision began to swim and pierced through one of the alpha’s eyes with a metal glint that extinguished the haunting glow.
“What. Are. Yo–-” The thing hissed, distorted and harrowed as its body turned to mist that blew away with the breath that Kara choked out.
“Kryptonian,” Kara spat, her anger thundering through her voice as she turned to find Nyxly in the stands. “And I will not allow my fate to come to this—to die brutally for entertainment’s sake.”
Nyxly’s lips curled into a laudatory smile as other betas in the nearest seats leaned in to congratulate her on the victory.
After the bloodshed, Kara stood alone in a pit of bodies, and the audience was rowdy and invigorated by it — all save for Lena, who cuddled a frightened pup against her neck and looked aghast at the destruction Kara caused. The omega flung her white robes out around her and exited her seat, leaving Andrea to rush after her.
Kara tossed aside her weapon and stalked back into the darkened holding pen, where she waited with her back up against a wall.
She breathed heavier and rammed her fist into a metal grate, screaming as she fought like there was another opponent she had to face. It hurt her knuckles to continue, but she punched twice more before giving up.
The mechanical sliding noise of a lock opening signaled Nyxly’s arrival, moments before the reek of her satisfaction and pride filled the pen. “You performed admirably, Kara, and now you shall attend my party. Won’t that be nice?”
Kara stubbornly kept her mouth shut and hunched over with ideas of putting up a resistance.
“You will spend the rest of the day with Lena,” Nyxly shared and batted her kohl-lined eyes romantically. “You’ve been in battles before, but this time you will have an omega to tend to you.”
That snapped Kara’s spine back to attention and she furrowed her brows in anger. “Is that what you think matters to me? That I earned the right to breed when all I did was commit atrocities to stay alive?”
Kara’s scorn burst out of her in a growl before she could consider the consequences she might face. For once she refused to shrink under the weight of Nyxly’s gaze and postured like the warrior she had been forced to become.
Nyxly sneered at her in surprise, her angular features appearing sharper and her tone colder when she stalked over. “We all do what we have to in order to stay breathing. You’re lucky I have your best interests at heart.”
“And what did my interests win you this time?” Kara snarled, the adrenaline in her system causing her limbs to shake.
The battle had taken a toll on her psychologically, and she saw herself as she imagined the child had, brutal and wretched. Anguish resided under her anger and Nyxly zeroed in on it with a curious squint.
“This outburst isn’t like you, Kara. What provoked such an ungrateful attitude?” Nyxly asked, not the least bit intimidated by the size of the alpha standing before her. She circled Kara as though looking for cracks in her armor, detecting the barest flicker of any emotion.
“Was it Lena running off with the child that unsettled you?” Nyxly queried, the slightest light of realization brightening her eyes when Kara’s fists clenched tighter. “Are you afraid she’ll think you a monster for demonstrating the power you possess?”
Kara dared not breathe, let alone speak another word as she realized how accurately Nyxly read her. She loathed how she lost her composure, how detrimental it had been to hand Nyxly any information about how she truly felt, and she hung her head regretfully.
Nyxly mistook it for grief, and softened her tone to coo, “You can’t hide your nature, and neither can she. Whether Lena admits it or not, her omega will value your strength above all, Kara.”
Nyxly bestowed brief contact as comfort, but it brought none to Kara, and she remained silent and stoic for the return journey to her lanista’s home.
It perturbed Kara to be led into a special room she had never been permitted to enter before. Lena stood in wait beside a large bath of warm scented water, surly and on edge.
Kara avoided her judgmental eyes and hunched slightly to appear less of a brute.
Nyxly keenly observed her for a moment and then ventured over to whisper something to the omega, and to pass off the vial she procured earlier. Lena did not speak and merely nodded, and Nyxly left with a scent of expectation about her that Kara found suspicious.
Lena set the vial aside and crossed her arms defensively as she stared at Kara, waiting for her to make the first move. “We don’t have long before the guests arrive. Take off your robes,” she demanded, the jut of her chin confrontational as she motioned to a stool beside a small crystalline basin.
“I will not,” Kara grunted, petulant in her defiance as she gathered the black material around her tighter.
Regardless of their brief tryst, Lena had yet to inspect her body without the hindrance of water between them, and Kara experienced a bout of panic she could not explain.
“I’ve been tasked with tending to your wounds. If you’d rather they fester, then fine by me. I’m sure your lanista will appreciate you bleeding all over her home,” Lena hissed and dragged the stool in front of her with the kind of attitude that reminded Kara of how omegas behaved when dealing with naughty pups.
Kara huffed out an irritated breath, her mind conjuring up punishments that might befall her if she resisted.
She shrugged out of her robes with all the grace of an alpha under distress and dropped them at her feet. In the glow of Nyxly’s bathroom, the purple and darkened bruises of her fights were strewn like patchwork across her tanned skin. Jagged and gaping wounds still oozed freely, and dried blood stuck to her in rivulets.
Lena had the good grace not to balk at her appearance, though Kara saw the way her eyes widened.
Thick and discolored scars of all shapes and sizes littered her body, old and new alike, and she tried not to entertain whatever thoughts must have run through Lena’s mind upon seeing them.
Kara sat down without more prompting, and Lena gathered a wet cloth to wipe away the muck and blood that clung to her wounds. There was no tenderness in her actions, and Kara snarled at the pain it inspired.
“You would think I was attacking you with the way you’re reacting. Sit still,” Lena spat in frustration when Kara leaned out of her touch.
The omega grabbed her by the face to inspect the deep gashes across her cheek and then faltered when their eyes locked.
“You’re doing more damage than I faced in the arena,” Kara accused, her face contorting when Lena gouged a particularly nasty puncture on her side.
Lena scoffed at her misery, twisting her gloved finger inside before retracting it with a victorious and smug smirk. She held up the sliver of obsidian that had broken off within her, and intoned, “Maybe if you didn’t revel in such carnage, you wouldn’t leave with trophies buried under your skin.”
“Spoken like a spectator who has never had to fight for her life,” Kara grit out between clenched teeth.
Her ire intensified when Lena vindictively stuck her finger into another gaping wound, this time finding nothing before she gathered a needle to stab Kara.
“You know nothing of what I’ve endured, or how I’ve come to be here, Kryptonian,” Lena hissed, maliciously shoving Kara to send her backwards off the stool and into the bath.
Water sloshed over the sides, soaking the floor as Kara scrambled like a cat to breach the surface with a gasping sputter. She no sooner opened her eyes than Lena forced them closed again by bringing a sponge full of suds to her face. In spite of the friction between them, Lena was gentle as she cleansed her this time.
Lena’s methodical strokes smeared bubbles over Kara’s neck and shoulders, and when Kara dared peek at her again, she noted her eyes were mapping scars.
Kara held her tongue, unwilling to spark another fight that might bring Nyxly or Andrea into the room while Lena washed off the grime that clung to her.
It felt strange to be touched so softly, and her mind went to a time when she was a pup and how her mother had bathed her.
“How long have you been a gladiator?” Lena asked, so hushed that Kara would have thought it was all in her mind if the omega’s finger hadn’t begun to trace a scar that slanted down her back.
“Nyxly isn’t my first lanista, but she has been my longest,” Kara confided under her breath, voice small and back tense from discussing it.
“Most alphas don’t last more than a year,” Lena murmured, her hand slipping beneath the water to soap the toned muscles of Kara’s abs. I think it's definitely a piece to be read as any dystopian kind of story where people are mistreated and violence becomes entertainment (i.e. The Hunger Games/Brave New World). I believe that's what the top tier patron had in mind, since Kara is physically so strong and in this context would be a fighter (and keeping to the history of what happened with gladiators/Spartacus, etc. They weren't a free people). With Lena's role, there's actually a bit more freedom (albeit limited) but she did sort of choose Kara. In a later chapter, it's clarified that she's had other options but refused them because they were brutes. Lena is under the impression that she's going to raise her children and give them a different kind of life, to an extent, with Andrea, but she's also aware of the unfairness of the system/ranks. Anyway, I would definitely say to stop reading this one if you find the content upsetting! There are a lot of other stories with non-dystopian tones and happier/comedic/fluffier themes. If you haven't read them already, I recommend Satisfaction Guaranteed, Sex in the Suburbs, Lunar or Later, or really any of the modern monthly one-shots.

I admit to have very ambivalent feelings about this story… on one hand, I believe it’s one of your best works, with the world building and the complexities of the characters. On the other hand, I couldn’t stand to read some parts. Slavery of any kind is abhorrent, and to put people on display like toys or tools, to possess them and make decisions for them like they have no mind of their own… it was repulsive. I also find Lena, I don’t know… inconsiderate, ignorant, naïve ? What does she thinks will happen if her children present as omegas, or worse as alphas ?

I’ve really appreciated this fic for the opportunity to world build! I love every single genre, but I’ve always gravitated to science fiction and fantasy. I can’t wait to continue the whole world building process, including more types of creatures/beings and delving more into the class structure. At first when Nyxly was introduced in the show, I was kinda bored – but by the end, she won me over with her complexities and it’s been cool to get this chance to write her in a different way. She makes an interesting antagonist—vastly different than a villain like Lex or Morgan Edge. I’m so glad I was able to include her! Yeah, Kara! That’s another thing I’m enjoying with this one – the chance to write from her POV more. Certain prompts just lend themselves to Lena POV more, and I love writing Lena’s POV, but it’s also enjoyable to write Kara’s inner hero/fighter/dork. With Andrea… I almost made her a different rank, but it makes the most sense for her to be a beta, given her privileges. She’s definitely smitten with Lena and it is an uncommon thing. The next couple of chapter should lay out the answers to some of these questions! Thank you! I’m happy about it, too. 😊💙

All the different aliens and creatures moving about it and the shop they go to visit! You paint such a vivid picture of any alien world in your stories but this one just pops something special imo. I don’t know what but that got me really good and immediately set the tone for the chapter. I’m so happy she’s in this story it really feels like it ups the ante for Kara. And SPEAKING OF KARA I know I said this the last time but her gladiatorial toughness combined with the dorkiness we know and love yet still with the emotional intelligence and depth of our favorite superhero is so good in this. The action scene alone you feel all her drive and motivation and fear! She’s so brave but she can’t have her last moment be like that! Endlessly fascinated by Lena’s standing in this world. Andrea seems very smitten which feels like an uncommon thing for a beta to be with an omega in this world especially since she’s still treating her a bit like property! But I wonder if Lena feels the same or if she’s viewing this all as a means to an end. It's an interesting relationship and I'm especially looking forward to scenes to come with Andrea! Lena's status as an omega is a bit better than Kara's as an alpha. In chap 2, Lena's not exactly free to do as she pleases, but she does have the ability to make some choices. She feels secure enough to make her opinions known (i.e. dislike of the fights), and she can do things like elect not to be in Andrea's company (at bar), but as far as fully challenging Andrea's will... no.
