For the rest of the night, Lena tried to put her own spin on what happened between her and Kara. She talked it out in her head and persuaded herself that sleeping with the omega should count as a conquest. That sort of notion would have sickened her in the past, but the alternatives were too inconceivable. Lena slinked towards the longest table at the back of the restaurant, where she was disturbed to spot Sam leaning into Kara’s space.
“Enjoying the fish tacos?” Lena intoned as she pulled back the chair beside her best friend from the cheer squad.
Sam laughed at the implication and moved aside to let Lena sit in between her and Kara. “Lena, we were just discussing you.”
That was worrisome information, given how Kara looked up at her with a new form of intrigue in her eyes.
“Winn wanted to know if you were dating anyone.” Sam propped her elbow on the table instead of angling herself in Kara’s direction.
Winn furrowed his eyebrows as if disgusted Sam would even repeat his question in front of Lena. “I said I would pay for you to get laid so you would act a little more human. Two totally different things. I doubt anyone voluntarily hangs out with you.”

It looked frayed and splotchy, and she was sure tufts of fur had been glued to it in patches.
Lena recoiled and stuck her chin out argumentatively. “I’m not wearing that. I’ll end up with rabies or mange—"
“Or worse,” Alex warned her without any trace of sarcasm. “You both get to wash Shit blaster tonight.”
Lena would have scoffed if Kara hadn’t chosen that moment to clear her throat and step in between them. “I thought we agreed that you would stop calling her that. It isn’t cute.”
“It wasn’t meant to be,” Alex deadpanned, her lips curling into a wry smile.
Kara rolled her eyes and turned her back to Alex as she confided, “She’s talking about a cute little poodle mix we call Floopsy. Her owner abandoned her, and when we brought her in, she was terrified. You can guess what happened next.”
Lena sucked on her teeth as she considered it, and never said a word as she held her hand out for the apron. Alex at least had the decency not to smirk as she put it on with a grimace.
“Come say hi to everyone.” Kara escorted Lena through a set of double doors to the kennels that were heartbreakingly full.

At the back of another cage, Floopsy cowered on top of a polka dot towel. Kara opened the door and retrieved a treat to cajole the frightened dog out.
Lena put her hand near Floopsy’s nose and waited for the skittish animal to sniff her.
“You’re good with animals. Patient.” Kara smiled at her gentle handling of the little dog.
“Don’t turn this into a lecture about how I can apply these skills with people,” Lena warned as she picked Floopsy up and walked off towards the bathing area.
