From a young age, Lena Luthor stood out from other people, both because of her smarts and her empathetic nature. She tended to sit by herself in quiet corners of the classroom, flipping through books about animals and avoiding the other more sociable kids her own age. By the time she was ten, she wore thick rimmed glasses for near-sightedness and acquired a bully who taught her the most valuable lesson about life: everyone loved egotistical, good-looking people who could catch a ball, tumble, or run fast. Simple things she could train a dog to do. No one ever acknowledged people like her, except as the butt of a joke.
It took her one summer to figure out how to become one of those good-looking, vain people who no one would ever mock. She switched to contacts, developed a new interest in fashion, and signed herself up for dance, gymnastics, and cheer squad. Her books about animals, a blue and pink pair of glasses, her ambitions to become a vet, and most of her feelings—they went into boxes of different sizes, both real and metaphorical. She made the worst kinds of friends, who fed her insecurities and set her on track to becoming competitive and above them all.
Driven by a need to prove herself, Lena excelled in most areas of her life and won scholarships for both her athletic and academic abilities. She flourished at National City University as the head of the honor society and the cheer captain, and there were few times that anyone criticized her. It came as a shock when her cheer coach sat her down for a discussion.
“There’s been several complaints raised against you in the past week, with allegations of you inciting bullying. Normally I wouldn’t care, since it boosts morale in the squad to designate someone as the loser, but this could affect your scholarship.” Coach Grant looked over the document in her hand with an unimpressed sneer and then waited for Lena to explain herself.
“You know how try-outs are. I push everyone to perform at their best. It’s not my fault if some of them are too sensitive to take it,” Lena defensively scoffed and leaned forward to glance at the accusations.
Every single one came from Winslow Schott, and Lena openly laughed as he walked into the office accompanied by a blonde omega whose glasses were bigger than her bright smile.
Lena stared at her pastel blue cardigan that she wore open over a polka-dot shirt and the pair of jeans that looked as if they had been ironed.

“Neither of us had a choice,” Coach Grant pointed out with a sour expression and remained on the edge of her desk to lord over the three of them.
The intimidation tactic worked on Winn, who kept his chin tucked to his chest and stared at his knees, but oddly not on Kara.

“To my knowledge, there seems to have been a few times where you’ve made some remarks about Winn’s physical abilities. Is this true?” Kara asked and pulled out a pocket-sized notebook and a pen like she planned to interrogate Lena.
“I don’t coddle my squad and as captain it’s my job to make sure everyone is capable of handling the roles they’ve been assigned. If one of us fails, we all fail.” Lena spat out exactly the kind of bullshit most people loved to hear, and it would have worked beautifully if Winn hadn’t chosen that second to find his spine.
“You said I have a better chance of catching herpes than any one of our flyers,” Winn spat, his humiliated reek so cloying that Coach Grant lifted an air freshener on her desk and sprayed it in his direction.
“There are no safety nets in cheerleading. We literally rely on you to catch members that have been tossed into the air,” Lena hissed, going out of her way to glare at Winn as he sat with a huffy frown on his face. “If you can't do that, then someone is going to get injured. Their safety is more important than your hurt feelings and you’ve fumbled every practice.”
“Maybe if you didn’t berate me in front of everyone, I would be more focused,” Winn grumbled with more hostility than he had ever shown before.
Lena would have been impressed if he wasn’t threatening her position as captain.
“Maybe if you quit, the team would be better,” Lena seethed, and as the aggressive stench of her alpha tried to put Winn in his place, Kara held up her hands between them.
The omega defused the situation with a scent that reminded Lena of cinnamon buns and baked goods.

Lena gloated by choosing to stay silent and raising her chin arrogantly into the air. She knew how to turn this in her favor, and she wasn’t about to blow her whole scholarship over a petty omega that couldn’t backflip twice in a row.
“What I’m hearing is that Lena is conscious of the danger her squad is in and places the responsibility for everyone’s safety in her own hands. Now, I think we can all agree there is nicer, more appropriate ways to get that point across without demeaning a member of the team,” Kara stressed and turned her attention to Lena who made a solid effort not to roll her eyes.
“She doesn’t know how to be nice!” Winn wheezed incredulously and turned to the coach as if he expected her to step in and reprimand Lena. “She told everyone my name was Matt on the first day, because he was someone she cut from the team—"
“That’s not true,” Lena corrected with a contrite tone that was at odds with the slow smirk she reserved for him. “It’s because you eat mat. It has nothing to do with that other loser.”
“There’s obviously a lot of frustration on both sides,” Kara intoned gently and tried to lower the tension in the room as she glanced between them both. “Winn feels humiliated and unsupported in his efforts to live up to your expectations, Lena, and your abrasive attitude doesn’t make him feel safe. I know how highly you value safety for your team, so how do we resolve this amicably before it becomes a situation the Dean has to handle?”
Lena understood what she had to say next, even though she physically resisted by clenching her teeth. She would have rather swallowed glass than kiss anyone’s ass and Winn knew it because he was sitting there smugly. It was his way of flipping her off, and Lena promised herself she would make his life a living hell the moment they walked out of this room.
“Now is a good time to answer.” Coach Grant’s support was more of a push to get Lena to spit it out, though they both knew it would be lip service.
“Sensitivity training,” Winn suggested wishfully.
“Or I could find new ways to motivate Winn that won’t result in losing my patience or making him feel singled out on the team.” Lena forced a smile that became genuine when Winn registered the threat of that statement. “I suppose being captain does put a lot of pressure on me and I might inadvertently put that on his shoulders because we’re only as strong as our weakest link.”
The thinly veiled insult appeared to go undetected by Kara, who looked happy with Lena’s fake self-reflection.
Kara took a slip of paper from her bag with her number scrawled in purple ink. “In addition to your own methods of handling the situation, I thought maybe we could work on these issues together. I’ll be attending all of your practices to provide additional mediation.”
Lena accepted the offering with a glare at Winn that promised imminent death.
At the time, she was unaware of how her ire would switch onto Kara, and she had no clue that the omega already had a reputation with the members of her squad.
As promised, Kara showed up at the next practice and settled down in the stands with a smile on her face.

Lena willed herself not to groan in aggravation, but several of her team noticed the omega trying to signal her over.
“Luthor’s in trouble,” Victoria sang out, and inspired a few of the other girls to shake their pompoms in her direction.
Lena drew her a dirty look as Kara finally tired of waiting and ventured closer with a timid smile. “Lena, can I have a word with you in private?”
