“You couldn’t be more single?” Lena echoed the crass words with a hurt smile on her face and the smallest jut of her chin that was her habit when fighting off tears.
Kara clenched her teeth together, grinding them in regret as she gathered her thoughts. “I just—I meant that we’re not technically together—like not officially a couple.”
She waved her hands in the air and trusted her clarification would help—but it made the tension between them worse, and she knew it the minute Lena’s eyebrows pinched sharply together in miffed surprise.
“So I didn’t just spend the last week letting you rut me while in heat? You didn’t pound me six ways from Sunday? I never took your knot?” Lena came up with question after question, her voice becoming progressively shriller and angrier.
Kara flailed and finally locked her teeth in something resembling more of a smile than a grimace. “You did. We did. We did all of those things! It’s just that I thought I was helping you through your heat as a friend. I didn’t know you wanted more, Lena.”
The tiniest tremble went through Lena’s bottom lip and Kara wanted to retract every word she told Nia to publish. It left her speechless to see Lena in so much pain, both because she messed up and because she realized that her best friend had feelings for her. Kara had been stupid not to understand that before, and now it was imperative to say the right thing to fix the situation—except Lena stalked off before she could emphasize that she also wanted more than friendship.
For all of her super speed, she was still too late to reach Lena as the omega activated a portal with her watch. The scathing glare Lena sent her way froze Kara in her tracks and prevented her from following.
Her eyes blurred momentarily as a pitiful, choked sound warbled out of her chest. It was less of an apology and more of an anguished realization that she ruined her chances.
Lena spared her the misery of trying to explain herself by vanishing in an instant, and Kara was too distraught to do more than stand alone in the dark.
The shrill sound of her phone ringing broke Kara out of her fugue state, and all at once she suited up with the idea of going after Lena.
“I don’t have time for this!” Kara spat down the line, expecting Nia to back off and give her space.
But it wasn’t Nia on the phone.
“Why aren’t you at your desk covering this story?”
“Miss Grant, it’s after office hours,” Kara wheezed, tuning her mentor out for a second to try and pinpoint Lena’s heartbeat in the din of the city. She couldn’t detect it over the loud thump thump of her own, and she cracked the kitchen counter by gripping it too hard as she stumbled.
“The news doesn’t sleep, Kara, and neither should you if you plan to continue on as Editor in Chief.”
The call cut off, and Kara took several panicked breaths before she dialed Lena’s number. It rang twice and then went dead, and the next call went straight to voicemail.
“Lena please pick up, I’m-I’m the biggest idiot, okay? I was trying so hard to not cross any boundaries because my feelings for you are more than friendly. They have been for a while, and I should have said that.”
In hindsight, maybe Kara shouldn’t have opened up in a voice message. She left a dozen more stuttering apologies for Lena by the time she rushed into CatCo, all equally desperate and more rambling than the last.
Everyone at work noticed she was a mess and gave her a wide berth, except for Tina who hurried towards her with a cup of coffee.
“God, you look worse than I feel right now,” Tina sighed, passing off the coffee without any idea how close she was to seeing Kara have a meltdown. “Can you believe how quick these people are to call Supergirl a homewrecker? Like hello, she’s out there saving us every day! When would she have time to steal anyone’s mate? She probably doesn’t even have one of her own because she’s so busy.”
The comment cut through Kara better than Kryptonite and her entire body clenched in pain.
She wouldn’t allow herself to lose hope, but if Lena was unable to forgive her, then how was she supposed to carry on?
“Oh, hey, it’s going to be okay.” Tina gave her a little pat on the arm, as if she assumed her distress was work related. “Nia’s been on top of social media and has everyone doing damage control. She’s already got a quote from Supergirl–”
“You can’t run it,” Kara barked so adamantly that Tina recoiled with a nervous laugh.
“I’m sorry?” Tina blinked, her smile not quite forming on her lips as she stared at Kara in shock.
Kara paced around her office as she ranted and spilled coffee on her desk with how roughly she set it aside. “The quote, it’s all wrong. I was stu -uh -speaking to Supergirl – on my way over. She wants to change it. There’s someone very important in her life and everyone should know that.”
Tina cleared her throat and kept her eyes downcast as she informed Kara politely, “Cat already authorized it. Nia tweeted it to the world to get ahead of the other news outlets.”
That filled Kara with a terrible dread, and she sat down at her desk to check Twitter.
Nia’s pithy statement received 505k likes, and 90k retweets within the hour.
Kara spent the rest of the night in a frenzied state as she went over rewrites and edits with all of the staff. She approved only the stories that painted Supergirl in the best light and shut down the gossip columnists that wanted to speculate if any of the rumors were true.
It was well into the early hours of the morning when everyone finally headed home, except for Kara, who sat hunched at her desk. She scoured the internet for advice on how to confess her love to her best friend after almost ruining their relationship.
A lot of articles suggested flower arrangements and fruit. Some insisted that romantic gifts were necessary, and everyone agreed that the grander the gesture, the better the outcome.
It was a little crazy to take wisdom from alphas online that showed no proof of their success, but Kara didn’t care. She would try any method if it meant Lena would give her another chance.
She flew around the world to handpick a bouquet the size of a blimp and clung to the exotic flowers like they were the only thing keeping her alive. She bought candies, pastries and a giant stuffed dog that held a fuzzy heart between its paws. The message I wuff you! was written across it.
Kara shot through the sky with her strange bounty and hovered above The Luthor Foundation, where a large gathering waited outside. She swooped down the second Lena appeared and landed as gracefully as anyone could when their arms were filled with an abundance of items.
It was an important day for Lena, who planned to hold a dedication ceremony for her second building.
Kara hoped making her declaration publicly would fix the mess of her own creation and also get the media off her back. She peeked out from behind a box of chocolates just to be blinded by the flash of several cameras.
“Miss Luthor – uh, Lena– your friendship has meant more to me than any other relationship in my life – and I’ve come here today to ask – if you’ll – if I ever have the chance of becoming your–”
“No.” Lena deadpanned, so cold and detached that for a moment even the audience before them gaped at her in surprise.
“But I didn’t finish,” Supergirl protested through the fuzz of the stuffed animal. She
hid the quiver of her chin as her emotions started to spiral and sniffled quietly as Lena turned to stare her right in the eye.
“You don’t have to finish. I can’t accept any of these gifts, or a relationship beyond friendship, Supergirl. In fact, it’s a little inappropriate for you to even ask me out when I have a date scheduled tonight with Kara Danvers.”
Despite facing Supergirl, Lena went out of her way to lean closer to the mic so that everyone could hear the name of who she was dating. It started an immediate frenzy as everyone tried to ask follow-up questions.
“Since when?” Supergirl asked, wondering if she had missed a text from Lena, though she was certain she hadn’t. She was so blindsided by the revelation that she momentarily forgot that people were actively filming their interaction.
Supergirl clutched the gifts in her arms tightly as if to shield herself from Lena’s frosty demeanor and ruined a few items in the process.
Flower petals scattered with artisan eclairs, and the bright flash of cameras captured it all.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but we’ve been seeing each other for a while now, and we’ve decided to make it official.” Lena made sure her voice carried and her smug posture kept the tension between them. She smirked at the bamboozled way Supergirl blinked, and then raised her chin as she waited for the Kryptonian to catch up with her machinations.
Speculation began as a buzz of whispers, and Supergirl stepped forward and inadvertently knocked down a small speaker system that she couldn’t see because of the giant stuffed animal in her arms.
The shriek of feedback cut off the mic and startled everyone, and in a fit of humiliation, she was gone. She left nothing behind except the property destruction, half the crumpled bouquet and treats.
Kara wanted to salvage what she could, but her heart was like a jackhammer in her chest and she flew straight to the tower with all of her gifts. She didn’t hang around and zipped right out the window in blind panic as Brainy looked up.
What kind of game was Lena playing?
She couldn’t be getting revenge if Lena was announcing their relationship to the world. Unless the omega was only saying they were together as an excuse to make the rejection public.
Anxiety seized Kara’s mind and she was so focused on all the what if’s that she almost missed the sound of her phone chiming with a message.
The Rendezvous. 7pm. Don’t you dare show up late.
Kara stared at the text for so long that by the time she realized it, she was crossing an ocean and had already lost signal.
The Rendezvous was the most expensive French restaurant in National City. It was known for its celebrity clientele and its world-renowned menu.
Getting a table last minute was practically witchcraft when the booking fee was more than most people's mortgages. Kara was already feeling intimidated, and that was before she realized she had to find something nice to wear.
The downside of dating Lena as herself instead of her heroic persona was that she couldn’t show up in her suit. She didn’t have to worry about dressing the part as Supergirl, except now she did, and her usual slacks and pressed shirt and cardigan combo wouldn’t cut it.
“I’m so screwed.” Kara groaned, and inhaled part of a cloud as she zoomed through the sky to head for National City.
She didn’t stop to think of the consequences of flying into CatCo to pull Nia aside until the entire office was staring at them in clear fascination. Kara forced a smile onto her lips and practically manhandled Nia onto the balcony for privacy.
“I desperately need your help,” Kara hissed under her breath with a desperate reek about her alpha.
“Should I get suited?” Nia asked, her eyes widening in alarm as she imagined what foe had Kara so distressed.
“Uh, no, I don’t need Dreamer.” Kara clarified through a grimace of clenched teeth. “I need your fashion expertise. I have–”
“Ooh, the date with Lena,” Nia cooed with a grin and leaned closer to nudge Kara like she wasn’t standing there in her superhero suit. “When the hell were you going to tell us you two were trying to bump uglies?”
Kara felt her jaw unhinge and she floundered for two seconds before she crossed her arms and muttered, “You know about that?”
“Dude, everyone knows. There’s clips of Lena turning you down all over the internet. The Daily Planet is already speculating that there’s a love triangle happening.” Nia pulled up evidence on her phone and let Kara scroll through the endless tweets of people’s shocked reactions.
A lot of omegas were using a meme to volunteer as tribute since Lena didn’t want to date her, and Kara frowned as she tried to work out what it meant.
“Cat’s got the gossip columnists digging through social media,” Nia informed her with only the slightest look of pity. “She’s about to pull you in for an exclusive piece on how your relationship with Lena could put an end to your special friendship with Supergirl.”
“It will have to wait.” Kara sputtered, her cape flapping about her thighs as she spun around to hide the panicked gasp she took. “I’m meeting Lena in three hours, and I don’t know what to wear. Can you please just–”
“Cut out of work to style you for your first official date with the woman you’ve been pining over for years?” The question sounded rhetorical as Nia came to stand by her side and placed a comforting hand on Supergirl’s forearm. “Sure, if Cat asks, I’ll say I’m helping you, so we have the bragging rights of being privy to what National City’s hottest couple wear on date night.”
“I owe you one,” Kara sighed, her gratitude softening the scent of her pheromones.
“Great! Then the next time you fly off to pick up some fancy chocolate for your girlfriend you can bring me back something, too,” Nia laughed, and hip checked Kara to get her to fly off. “I’ll meet you in the lobby in five for our little shopping spree.”
Kara nodded and ran off in a whirlwind of speed to transform from Supergirl into Editor-in-chief. She stepped onto the private elevator and emerged in the lobby only to be crowded by CatCo press and reporters from other news outlets.
Fortunately, Nia already had a car waiting, and within the hour, Kara had an impeccable blue suit and new shoes that cost half her paycheck.
She tried to channel the confidence of her superhero persona as she entered the restaurant at the appointed time and spotted Lena already seated at one of the nicest tables.
Lena looked stunning in an emerald green evening dress with her hair softly curled instead of pinned up. She noticed Kara striding towards her and watched her every movement with a raised eyebrow.
Kara brought a box of gourmet chocolates and another bouquet, this one purchased from a local flower shop with seasonal blooms and sprays. She settled down across from Lena and handed over her gifts with a frog in her throat and panic in her chest.
“You look—so breathtaking—wow.” Kara lacked the ability to be smooth when she was sitting across from the sexiest omega in the restaurant.
“If I had known you looked this good in other suits, I would have announced we’re dating sooner.” Lena raked her narrowed eyes down Kara in lustful appraisal and signaled the server.

Kara nearly cracked the wood with how her leg jumped and she laughed self-consciously as someone looked in their direction. She gulped down her wine with the knowledge that it wouldn’t give her the effect she wanted and tried to inch her chair closer to feel Lena again.
“After I stormed out of your apartment, I was tempted to tweet that I was the culprit behind Supergirl’s accidental exposure,” Lena stated with an aggrieved jut of her chin as she flicked her lashes at Kara. “I wouldn’t have, just so we’re clear, but when I saw the clickbait articles and the outrageous claims being thrown your way, it took some of the sting out of your insistence that you were single.”
Kara pinched her lips together as Lena shared and nodded along without judgement. “I really didn’t mean to hurt you, Lena. CatCo was putting pressure on me to get a quote and Nia said there were alphas saying Supergirl had affairs with their omegas. I wasn’t thinking when I said all that.”
“Were you thinking when you sent me an assortment of dick pics last week in response to my question about what you wanted to do after the fundraiser?” Lena queried with a touch of accusation to her tone. Lena’s eyebrows remained raised as she sucked on her teeth and then she held a finger up to pause the conversation. She retrieved her phone out of a small studded clutch purse, and after a few minutes of scrolling, she passed it off to Kara. “You sent them first.”
“Oh, Rao, that’s a lot of me,” Kara wheezed, seeing the intimate selfies for the first time after she snapped them. “I took those after hearing some of the columnists at work reading speculations about Supergirl on this thing called The O Chat. I must have sent them by accident that day, and then my phone snapped when I landed. I never realized you saw these.”
