Kara’s tanned complexion couldn’t hide her blush and she pressed her hands to her hips and tucked her chin towards her chest. “I forgot to get your number last night so I could ask your preferences.”
“I usually just drink coffee and finish Liam’s leftovers for breakfast. In short: I’ll eat anything.” Lena bit into one of the wraps and helped herself to the carton of fruit.
They sat next to Liam’s high chair, and he kicked his feet happily while chomping on pieces of strawberry. Kara spread out the containers on the table and dumped syrup all over her stack of pancakes. Anyone would think they belonged to the same family, since Liam had lighter, sandy hair that was typical of others in the Luthor line. He looked a lot like Lena and nothing like his actual sire. Had they been out in public somewhere, strangers could assume that Liam’s blonde hair was inherited from Kara’s side.
Lena shook herself out of her delusional thoughts and let pessimism take hold in her chest. “You know, you didn’t have to come back this morning, Kara. I wasn’t expecting it.”
She wondered if she sounded jaded, or if her voice was just still rough from sleep.
Kara knitted her brows together and blinked like there had been a terrible misunderstanding. “I know we didn’t solidify any plans, but I gave you my word to check out the wiring and I take that kind of thing seriously.”
“Oh, right.”
Lena’s laugh sounded like a defeated sigh, and she lowered her gaze to the fruit chunks that she pushed around in the container.
Kara didn’t return because she wanted to get her number. She was there out of a misguided sense of obligation. Lena wondered if the alpha wanted to fix the issue to avoid having to see her in front of her crew, or if Kara was embarrassed by how they had fallen into bed before getting to know each other.
Kara was too busy digging into her stack of pancakes to see the shift in Lena’s mood, and she grinned to herself mid bite before leveling Lena with a look. “Besides I was hoping that maybe you and Liam would like to come to the Fireman’s fair this weekend? We make it a big deal.”
Liam swung his hands in the air as he turned to Lena with expectation. “Mommy, I want to go.”
“We’ll see,” Lena tactfully stated and eyed Kara. “I hardly know you, or anyone else in this town yet.”
“Well, I’d like to change that, so what do you want to know?” Kara asked and propped her chin onto her hand as she waited.
Lena had a whole host of questions, the majority of which she couldn’t voice in front of her impressionable son.
“Have you always lived here?” Lena finally asked.
She figured that would give her a better read on the alpha than outright asking why she was interested in a single mother.
“Born and raised,” Kara grinned, like she was proud of that. “Don’t get me wrong, I went out of state for college. I got a taste of the big city, but my heart kept pulling me back here.”
“Your heart?” Lena couldn’t help how she grilled Kara. She wondered about past romantic entanglements that could have lured Kara back to town—not that she believed they would discuss any of that over breakfast.
“Yeah, my whole family lives here, and I was married once before.” Kara’s openness was unusual for an alpha. She seemed completely at ease with admitting to her divorce, although her attention dropped away to the table before Lena could look her in the eye to gauge her feelings on sharing that secret.
Lena freed her son from his seat, and Liam hurried off to collect his trucks from the floor. That gave her the opportunity to speak to Kara in private.
“You’re divorced?” Lena didn’t know how to pose questions without appearing too invested, so she kept it simple.
Kara still wouldn’t glance up from her plate and ended up explaining carefully and at a delay. “No, umm, my wife—she passed away in an accident about five years ago. We were married pretty young.”
“I’m sorry,” Lena whispered sincerely and attempted to place her hand over Kara’s wrist.
Kara slid up from her chair and grabbed her tool kit, brave even in the face of obvious grief. “There’s nothing anyone could have done. I should go and check out that wiring.”
Liam popped up with his fire truck under one arm and reached out for Kara. “Can I help? Pahlease, pahlease.”
“Well, sure you can, buddy! I’ll need someone to hold the flashlight for me.” Kara scooped him up and tucked him onto her hip so she could lift the toolbox, and Lena followed them as Liam cheered in excitement.
“I’ll keep him safe,” Kara whispered as she caught Lena anxiously standing at the doorway like she might swoop in and take Liam away.
Her little one sat in the middle of the bed with the flashlight and shined it everywhere but up. Kara took a beam of light to the eyes more than once, but she grinned through the temporary blindness and unscrewed the light fixture to peer at the wiring.
“Huh, this doesn’t look right at all,” Kara muttered and pulled a penlight out of her toolkit to inspect a series of frayed and damaged wires. She pulled on thick gloves to fiddle with a few, but the first spark of electricity blew the hallway light and frightened Liam in the process.
“Ah, fudge, this is worse than I thought it would be.” Kara grimaced and tucked the wiring back into place before reconnecting the light. “Don’t use this until an electrician can get out here. I think the wiring needs to be checked for the entire upstairs.”
The sun began filtering in through the curtains, and Lena figured it wouldn’t be too difficult to avoid using certain lights. At all costs, she needed to stop receiving house calls from the fire department.
Kara arranged her tools back in the kit she brought out, and Lena followed her down the stairs with Liam draped around her.
She stood on the front steps to wave Kara off, in spite of having an odd feeling that her neighbors would be observing them.
“So I’ll pick you and Liam up around 4 on Saturday?” Kara asked and looked directly at Lena’s lips as she leaned forward.
Lena was so startled by the thought of a kiss that she exhaled a quiet, “Yes,” then immediately reeled back.
She couldn’t retract her confirmation as Liam wiggled out of her arm in excitement and ran into the house to get his shiny new fire truck. Lena stood by in mortification as Kara tucked her hands into her back pockets and announced, “Then it’s a date. I can’t wait to see you again.”
Kara jogged down her path and was already sliding into her truck when Lena thought to croak out belatedly, “No-no I meant just as friends–”
“Sure you did, that’s why you climbed her like a tree last night and left her to walk home in her uniform,” Mr. Edge drawled from his property line.
Lena jumped at the sight of him pruning a bush, and sneered because that was likely the only kind he would ever get his hands on.
“What I do in the privacy of my home is none of your business.”
“Yeah?” Mr. Edge scoffed and straightened to leer at her like he knew what was beneath her robe. “Then you might want to make sure you close the curtains. You never know who could be watching.”
“You’re a pig,” Lena uttered in disgust and slammed the door on his smug face just as he crowed, “Says the harlot next door.”

I think this might be the only one of my fics where Sam is an alpha. Hmm, I'll have to explore her as an alpha in some other stories now. Alex is in the next part. 🙂 That's good imagining because I think that's basically what Edge does, maybe with the addition of some landscaping so it looks like he has a reason to be outside when he's just spying on his neighbors. And not Lena's BFF. I do really enjoy writing Sam. In reality, that condom probs would have come off, but that would have haunted Lena into probably not putting out for the other 3 parts of this fic and we can't have that, can we? 😂 One of my friends read this first and she was like "WTF dead wife? Thanks, Satan" but I wanted to add some complexities for Kara and all of that. Thank you!!!

loved this so much. kara is just such a gentle yet hott soul and everything lena wants and needs to make her family complete. i like that lena is a bit timid about kara’s intentions. also mom lena is so cute, liam is adorable. Im glad that their first date is something that includes him as well. i cant wait to see what happens at the fair. Also edge is a complete creep. im not going to lie, i watch way too many crime docs that my mind went to “this man probably sneaks into their house when theyre out” because of his voyeur nonsense.

This is such a sweet yet hot story. Lena’s resistance to Alphas is about to get seriously tested.LMAO at Lena’s “problems in the bedroom”. statement. Hot,hot sex.
