Lena spent the entire summer jet-setting to big tech events. In between those frequent trips, she attended appointments with Kara’s personal stylist so she could dress the part of the hot fiancée. They postponed their engagement party until a more convenient time in autumn when Kara’s schedule would experience a lull and finally allow her to take days off. That was the only excuse Lillian would accept for moving the date, and she still phoned at least twice a day with questions about the décor and menu.
Lena had to remind her mother a million times that it was just an engagement party and not their actual wedding. In spite of her absolute certainty that Kara was the one for her, Lena panicked whenever her mother called. She couldn’t wrap her head around the sudden changes in her life.
Lillian scheduled the engagement party for the second to last week in October with the expectation that Lena would stay in town through Halloween for another extravagant event.
The issue was that Lena liked Halloween more than any other holiday, and she didn’t stop to think about what she would be sacrificing when she agreed to her mother’s plans.
The previous year, Lena spent the night bar hopping and picking up alphas. It had been like a very drunken and adult very version of trick-or-treat. She chose the tightest, shortest costumes, and gothic make-up that she couldn’t wear to the lab as a grad student.
Lena wouldn’t miss trawling through bars for a decent person to take home, but she lamented the lost chance to play dress up.
“What if I showed up to our engagement party wearing this?” Lena asked and lifted a naughty little witch costume from a rack to dangle in front of Kara.
They had ventured to the nearest party store to browse the costumes. Her mother always decked the Luthor home out like the Haunted mansion. Lena doubted they would need to provide their own wardrobe since there tended to be a family theme year after year, but she could still fantasize about breaking her mother’s dress code.
Kara’s eyes widened and she puffed her cheeks out comically as she took in the scraps of fabric. “I would definitely be under your spell, although you wouldn’t need magic to keep me by your side all night.”
The corny line flattered Lena’s ego and made her feel a bit better. She bit her lip as she browsed some of the other questionable outfits that showed off more skin than some of the lingerie in her closet at home.
She must have sighed heavier than she realized, because Kara was behind her in an instant to rest her chin on Lena’s shoulder.
Kara nuzzled into her cheek and settled her hands on Lena’s hips to hold and comfort her. “You know we don’t have to attend your family’s Halloween party. I could say there’s an emergency at work and whisk you away after our engagement party.”
Lena’s scent changed from the temptation, and Kara secured her arms around Lena’s middle. There was pressure from her omega to agree, and Lena came close to exhaling do it before she caught herself. It wasn’t fair to expect Kara to change her moral compass, even if it saved them from spending another holiday with Lena’s family.
Lena smirked at Kara’s flustered state as she untangled herself from her mate. “You should know by now that saying no to my mother doesn’t work. She’ll follow us across the country or get my father to guilt you into staying.”
Kara strategically lifted the closest costume to hold in front of herself. “I know what I’m marrying into, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make our own family traditions.”
The leopard print Tarzan costume wasn’t long enough to hide that she was semi-erect, and Lena enjoyed the view until Kara shoved it onto the rack and pulled out a long cape.
“Are you proposing we talk my mother into relaxing some of her festivities to accommodate our own? Because that woman is more accustomed to boardroom negotiations than my father. She’ll have you bending to her will without you even realizing you’ve done it.”
“Yeah, I could see that,” Kara remarked with a thousand-yard stare that alluded to her memories of hopping around in a rabbit costume at Easter. “Growing up, I didn’t share a lot of holiday traditions with my friends, but Halloween was common ground and I’ve always loved it. So why don’t we have our own party within a party?”
Lena squinted at the suspicious and confident attitude that Kara exuded. She sucked on her teeth before relenting, “Okay, I’m listening.”
Kara’s entire face lit up as she animatedly began searching through costumes. “We can’t wiggle out of attending your family’s event, but we can have our own Halloween fun by buying a bunch of costumes each and sneaking around The Haunted Mansion to find one another. Consider it our middle ground, a new little trick or treat tradition.”
“Oh, game on,” Lena declared in excitement and hurried off to drape a few costumes over her arm.
She selected the most tempting options for their private party and headed to the check-out in a far better mood.
Days later, they both packed several suitcases and Lena glanced at the sexy little witch costume as she tucked it into her luggage near the one-of-a-kind designer gown for her engagement party.
Her mother had made all of the choices on her appearance — from the couture right down to the shade of lipstick she would wear. Kara would spend the morning with her family while Lena kept to a tight schedule of appointments. She endured a mani-pedi duo with some of her mother’s friends and two hours at the salon. The entire busy morning was overwhelming, and that was just the lead up to the party.
Lena arrived at the location at noon, and by then her stomach growled for lunch. Her mother denied her breakfast on account of the gown having no give. All in all, that shifted responsibility onto Lillian for the disaster that occurred right before the party began.
Without thinking it through, Lena ate a breakfast sandwich that her father smuggled in for her. Mid bite, she spilled ketchup-covered eggs right down her dress. She realized that she must have gotten Lex’s order after greasy bacon dropped into her lap. Her brother must have gotten her avocado, egg and swiss.
It would have been easy to swap clothes with someone else had the disaster not taken place moments before she was supposed to make her entrance. She searched through her bag for any other clothes and came up empty-handed. Apart from costumes, she hadn’t shoved any other outfits into that particular piece of luggage.
With the option of wearing her breakfast or the scandalous witch costume, Lena picked the latter.
She held her breath as she stepped into the private room at the yacht club that was hosting the event.
The noisy chatter of excited guests all died to a startled silence as one by one the crowd spotted her in a dress so short her ass was practically on show. The fabric at the front dipped halfway to her navel, and if she hadn’t already been wearing tape for her tits, they would have greeted her mother’s friends.
With nothing to do but put on a brave face and the witch’s hat that went with her outfit, Lena sought out Kara with her eyes.
Her future mate stood ramrod straight in the middle of the room with a frozen, open-mouthed expression on her face. It filled Lena with inexplicable guilt.
All of their photo opportunities were ruined because she had put her hunger first. She hoped Kara wouldn’t hold it against her, but with everyone’s eyes on her, she was close to tears.
Lena tried to convey how sorry she was, but Kara snapped her mouth shut and flung her fist into the air with a shout that confused the hell out of everyone except her friends.
“Avengers assemble!”
Everyone gasped around Lena as Kara and several of her friends ripped open their tailored suits in unison.
Winn barrel-rolled and sprang up next to Kara as Hawkeye, and grinned as Kara showed off her full Thor costume. Another friend handed Mjölnir to Kara, and Brian dashed over as Iron Man.
It all happened so fast that the initial chaos took the spotlight from Lena, and she laughed at the absurdity of Kara posing with her friends to entertain the baffled guests.
To everyone else, it looked like Lena’s choice of wardrobe was part of a bigger plan. Except Lillian, who knew better, and ran to Lena’s side as she picked up a flute of champagne.
“When I said I planned for you to reveal yourself at the party, this wasn’t what I meant,” Lillian hissed under her breath and stared in despair at the sexy witch outfit her daughter wore. “I thought you would have grown out of your rebellious phase now that you’re engaged.”
Lena rolled her eyes and leaned into her mother as she drawled sarcastically, “Ah, yes, because given the option, I obviously preferred to shock everyone I’ve ever known while also humiliating myself to boot.”
“There’s still time to change,” Lillian intoned as she noted how Kara kept the attention off of Lena.
“Oh, we’re past that, and this is your fault anyway,” Lena accused with a petulant jut of her chin and narrowed eyes. “Were you planning to starve me the entire afternoon or just long enough to leave me feeling faint?”
That little jab helped Lillian to draw certain conclusions, and she gaped at her daughter in disbelief. “Tell me you didn’t stain that beautiful dress.”
“Not on purpose,” Lena stressed, as though that tidbit of information would make a difference. She peered over her mother’s shoulder to ogle her mate’s buff arms and bit her lip to stop a sigh of longing. “Besides, Kara’s not marrying me for my fashion sense.”
“Thank God for that, or she would be long gone by now,” Lillian dramatically stated and stole the flute of champagne from Lena’s hand to swallow it in one gulp.
Before Lena could complain about the theft, her mother’s hand was on her back and shoving her into another room.
“You’re lucky I brought back-up options,” Lillian hissed and unzipped several garment bags that hung on a silver rack.
Lena had never been so grateful for her mother’s interference and over-planning. She picked up one of the dresses that looked most appealing and changed faster than anyone could miss them at the party.
The classic dress was forest green with touches of autumn color and a full skirt that ended below the knee. She heard nothing but a pleased little noise of approval from her mother, and that was confirmation enough that she made the right choice.
This time when everyone gasped, Lena knew she was stunning and not the mockery of her own party. She spotted her future mate from across the room, and this time hurried forward with more confidence.
“Thank you for saving me from public humiliation,” Lena muttered into her hero’s ear. “I spilled food on my dress and didn’t realize my mother packed back-ups.”
Kara stared at her in astonishment and kissed her hand in front of all their guests. “You’re beautiful. Remind me to send your mom the biggest bouquet of flowers as a thank you.”
“No need to thank me,” Lillian opportunistically replied from several strides behind Lena. “I’m just all too happy to welcome you into our family. I waited many long years for Lena to find love.”
“Mother, you make it sound like I’ve been single for ages,” Lena spat under her breath and tried not to start a full-on argument in front of witnesses.
“Just long enough for us to meet, and now look at us.” Kara suavely inserted herself into the bickering and smoothed it over before it really kicked off. She held Lena’s hand like she was royalty, and from the way she stared down at her, Lena damn near believed it.
Lillian’s guests took notice of the reverence on Kara’s handsome face, and Lena saw them sigh and clutch onto their alphas.
“Oh, to be young all over again and falling in love,” Lillian wistfully sighed, and turned to make eyes at Lionel across the yacht club.
He flashed her a flirtatious smile that Lena wished she hadn’t witnessed and puffed himself up with all the swagger of an alpha half his age.
The amenable fragrance of her mother’s pheromones brought a grimace to Lena’s lips and she gaped at the blatant way her parents showed off their attraction.
“There are plenty of rooms in this place. Why don’t you and my father find one and spare the rest of us?”
“Don’t be so silly, we would never do that,” Lillian intoned as she dropped her eyes to study her immaculate nails.
The pink shade of guilt that crept across her mother’s cheeks appalled Lena, and she refused to consider which of her parents she took after more in that regard.
“Mother! This is our engagement party. You organized this! Oh god, is that why you organized it?”
Kara’s charm made any situation bearable, even the uncomfortable realization that Lena’s parents still enjoyed one another in ways that weren’t strictly PG.
“I think it’s wonderful that you and Lionel have kept your love going strong all these years,” Kara insisted. “That’s exactly what I hope for in our future marriage.”
Lena was still reeling from the trauma of finding out her parents were still sexually active. She clutched onto Kara’s arms as she tried to block the truly spooky mental image of her parents getting nasty.
Lillian ignored Lena’s horrified stench and cupped Kara’s cheek. “Oh, sweet thing, at least you understand the importance of keeping the passion alive.”
Fortunately, a gaggle of older omegas flocked around Lillian, and Lena would have sighed in relief if not for the way they all stopped to gawk at Kara in her costume.
“Lillian, won’t you introduce us to your future daughter-in-law?” Mrs. Tillman asked and reached for Kara’s bicep instead of the hand she offered.
Kara took it like a champ and posed like the hero she was portraying, and Lena felt her heart grow just from watching it.
Lillian jumped at the chance to parade Kara in front of her entire inner circle. “This is Kara Danvers. I would tell you about her work, but you’re all aware of her many accomplishments. Have you seen the new article in Businessweek?”
Most of the omegas looked impressed, except for a few: Mrs. Rojas pinched her lips together and glanced across the room to where Andrea knocked back a glass of champagne with her date. As the parents of Lena’s exes, Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Matthews seemed equally put-off by Kara’s patient flexing.
“I read the article, but I had no idea you were this strong from your picture,” Mrs. Tillman marveled and gave Kara’s bicep another firm squeeze.
Penelope Corben also took a turn gripping “the hammers” and posed for a photo opportunity with her hand on Kara’s arm.
Lena survived the first round of introductions by standing back. She sipped sparkling drinks and ate bite-sized appetizers without worrying about being the center of attention.
That came to an end the moment her ex James wandered over with his suit jacket missing so that he could posture beside Lena. His arms were less impressive covered by his shirt, but he still tried to compete with Kara.
“I thought with this kind of venue, this event would be classy, but I guess you guys like playing pretend too much, huh?”
“Isn’t that what you’re doing now?” Lena postulated with a raised brow that lowered as she smiled viciously to mask the hurt James tried to inflict. “No, wait, behaving like a giant baby was never an act with you.”
“Hey, I’m not the one running around like a kid dressed up for Halloween in front of your entire social circle. If I’d known you were into humiliation, maybe we would still be together.” James sneered down at her, and his smug pheromones threatened to block out Kara’s sweeter ones.
Lena’s stomach rolled in disgust. She knew this was James trying to make himself feel better at her expense. She wanted to confront him, but she didn’t want to make another scene. In her conflict, she missed the opportunity and he turned away from her with an air of victory.
Neither of them realized Kara had approached until she accidentally bumped into James with a full flute of champagne poised by her hip. The spillage, which Lena witnessed as a deliberate attack, soaked the front of James’ pants, and ran down his left thigh like he had peed himself.
James couldn’t get a word out, even though he appeared to be chewing profanities under his breath.
“Oh, my bad, I thought you said you liked humiliation,” Kara calmly stated as she stared him down.
The muscled bulk of Kara’s arms was intimidating as she crossed them, and her smile was less than friendly as she stepped back to let others see James with wet pants. “You might want to take a walk. This isn’t the place to make a mess.”
The threat was enough to get him moving, and Kara’s entire demeanor shifted from aggressively protective to smitten alpha as she turned to Lena with a bright smile. “So, when do I get to dance with you?”
Lena beamed from ear to ear and her eyes twinkled as she put out her hand.
Kara lightly clutched her fingers and led her off to the dance floor. They stepped in alongside the people that Lena grew up with locally and Kara’s closest friends. Each group behaved differently, some waltzing around and others making up their own moves. Lena rested her head on her future mate’s shoulder and experienced a strange flashback to her horrible cotillion. She remembered dancing with most of the alphas in her grade and feeling like she would never have a mate.
Lena turned and pivoted to glide with Kara in a new direction. “You’re pretty wonderful, do you know that? Thank you for handling every problem today with strength and grace.”
“This is our day, and you deserve to feel special.” Kara puffed up her chest with an inhale through her nostrils and gripped Lena’s hand to lead her around in front of their impressed guests.
They greeted the rest of their family and sat with them to chat and enjoy the seven course menu that Lillian selected.
Lex appeared thoughtful and waited for the least appropriate time to broach a topic they had never discussed. “So, Lena, are you going to go through the steps to convert to Judaism?”
Eliza paused her conversation and wiped her mouth with her napkin to listen to Lena’s answer. Jeremiah also seemed more attentive and curious about their actual wedding plans.
“We might just have a non-denominational wedding,” Kara cut in, and gathered up the perfect bite of food on her fork.
“Or multi-denominational,” Lena blurted as she noticed the wrinkles of disapproval near her mother’s eyes.
“Lena doesn’t have any specific thoughts in her head about what her wedding should be like,” Lillian imparted, gently chiding but with a small smile on her lips. “We’ll need to hire a wedding planner to ensure we create a celebration that makes everyone happy.”
Lena could already tell that her wedding would be like all other occasions of her life—out of her control and more extravagant than she could imagine. After that discussion, her anxiety returned and accounted for why she dragged Kara off to a private corner to make some insane requests.
“What if we just head to a hotel tonight and you bite my neck? We could skip the whole wedding and spend the holidays anywhere but here.”
“It would be the easiest way to disappoint both of our families, and I do travel a lot, anyway,” Kara concluded with a small smile that alluded to the gentleness of her alpha. She swept the hair away from Lena’s neck to gaze at it longingly and teased her thumb across the pristine skin that would one day carry her mark.
“Just think of it.” Lena pleaded and clung onto the front of Kara’s costume as if she was truly an omega in distress in need of saving. “No more meddling from your future mother-in-law–”
“No more difficult questions at the dinner table?” Kara raised her brows with a knowing glint in her eye and tried to hide her amusement by pressing her lips together.
Lena groaned and tried to shrink five sizes to hide from any perceived judgement, but Kara wouldn’t allow that. She grudgingly met her alpha’s eyes after Kara carefully lifted her chin with two fingers.
Lena resisted the urge to whine about how unfair it was to be asked such a serious question at their engagement party.
“I need you to know that I don’t expect you to convert for me. Or for anyone.”
Though Kara whispered her words, they were surprisingly firm and kept Lena enthralled without interrupting. “I know my family can be pushy, too. They would love it if you converted, but their opinions on it don’t matter to me. I only care what you think. Religion is a deeply personal thing and I love you as you are. That’s not going to change if you decide you want to celebrate Christmas and all your traditions. I enjoy getting to participate with you, anyway. Between us, we get all the holidays.”
“Kara,” Lena whimpered, her lip quivering as she tried to hold back the tears that blurred her vision. She opted for a harsher tone to mask the warble of her words and stiffened her jaw. “Kara this is a little more than just holidays. It’s-it’s about our future, and how we raise our pups, and how do we navigate all of this if we’re not on the same page?”
Lena knew she said the wrong thing as a dopey and lovesick smile appeared on Kara’s lips. The sweet scent of adoration coaxed Lena’s omega into a calmer state that lasted all of one second before Kara stressed her out by asking, “You’re already thinking of pups?”
“No!” Lena insisted, perhaps a tad too forcefully as several heads turned to observe them. Children weren’t consciously on Lena’s mind, though every chance she got to see Kara around them softened her to the prospect of one day having a little Danvers of her own. “Not—not exactly, but will you focus?”
Lena didn’t mean to snap, but her nerves were frayed and the misty-eyed way Kara was staring at her wasn’t doing her omega any favors. She worried it might trigger a latent want within her, or worse, start off her heat, and that was the last thing they needed right then.
Kara inhaled deeply through her nose and cupped Lena’s cheeks in her warm palms like she was preparing to say something profoundly wise. “In the event of future children, I propose we just teach them both religions. We can let them learn, and when they’re a little older, they can choose for themselves what they believe.”
Logically it made sense in a modern era kind of way. Lena still frowned at the absurdity of it though, because neither of their families would be satisfied with that outcome. It also failed to take into account all of the resulting problems they might face, and Lena took it upon herself to calculate the hypothetical push backs they would encounter with such a lax approach.
Her mind was already on school districts and all the pencil-pushing bureaucracy involved in securing a spot for kids they didn’t even have yet.
“But specific schools—”
“Will accept whatever check I write them and let our kids in without any hassle,” Kara stipulated, like she understood the unwritten rule for the elite. “You know I’m not a fan of throwing money around, but in this case I’m happy to make an exception if it gives you peace of mind.”
Lena wasn’t entirely sure it quelled any of her worries. There were too many factors involved and the thought of disappointing anyone, especially Kara, weighed on her mind. Maybe that was why she felt the need to push the subject as she took Kara’s hands in her own.
“You’re really okay with me being undecided and potentially never converting?”
People ended whole marriages over less, so it was imperative for her to make sure this wasn’t a hidden deal breaker. Lena almost regretted the question when a crinkle appeared between Kara’s eyebrows.
Kara paused to consider it, her entire chest expanding with the breath she took before exhaling sincerely, “Honestly? Nothing is more important to me than the love I share with you.”
All of Lena’s muscles clenched in anticipation of hearing an ultimatum, but she relaxed as Kara pulled her into an embrace. They swayed romantically while the party carried on around them, then they slipped out half an hour later while nobody took notice.
Lena held onto the reassurance of Kara’s love for the rest of the week, cocooned in her own emotions while Kara doted on her in true spooky fashion.
Kara juggled late lunches with Lillian and then whisked Lena off to participate in ghost walks and escape rooms in the evening.
Lena managed to behave herself for the most part, and didn’t spoil their upcoming fun by wearing any of her sexy outfits – though that didn’t stop her from dressing provocatively, and Kara took her out to bars just to hit on her like they weren’t already engaged.
By the time Halloween arrived, Lena was sure she could tolerate whatever outlandish theme her mother had gone with this year. She was, as always when it came to her mother, wrong.
Lena wasn’t fazed by the excessive decorations as Kara pulled into the driveway, or the mismatched ghoulish appearance of a giant scarecrow towering over a real bubbling cauldron. She expected it to lurch at her as they walked up the steps, but the only scare she received was Lillian rushing her at the door in full fairy godmother costume.
“Daarrling!” Lillian sang and swooped towards them with outstretched arms and a wand that sparkled like a Christmas ornament.
Lena made a halfhearted attempt to walk back out the door, and she would have made it if her mother hadn’t latched onto Kara to kiss her cheek.
“Kara, I have your costume right here in the foyer. You can drop your bags off in the spare room before changing.”
“I hope you’re not expecting me to play Cinderella,” Lena sassed as she took in the vibrant green of her mother’s gown and all of the sequins that shimmered with her movement.
“I’ll have you know I’m Tinkerbell, and your costume is in your bedroom,” Lillian smartly retorted and flicked her wand towards the staircase to hurry her daughter along.
“Tinkerbell doesn’t have a magic wand. She uses pixie dust,” Lena argued, and promptly wished she hadn’t as her mother sprinkled glitter over her head like she had been waiting for the opportunity.
“And Peter Pan has hair, but it’s Halloween and we can be whomever or whatever we wish,” Lillian insisted and preened as Lionel escorted children through the hallway in shockingly skin-tight green lycra.
He tipped his hat to Lillian and waved to Kara and Lena as he pretended to blow into a flute. The children were all eager to play follow the leader, oblivious to Lena’s scandalized scent.
She turned dramatically to Kara and rasped under her breath, “I’m going to need five shots of tequila just to begin this night.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” Kara promised, and from the way she leaned forward, Lena knew a kiss was inevitable.
“Don’t you dare spoil this for the children.” Lillian chided and made sure to separate them as she gave Lena a gentle push towards the staircase. “You both have five minutes to get ready because I have special tasks for each of you tonight.”
“The point of inviting people to a party is to let them enjoy it,” Lena griped as she watched Lillian all but usher Kara into an unused study.
“Too bad, you’re family,” Lillian scoffed.
Lena used every ounce of spite within her as she dressed without Kara by her side. She hated the ankle length red skirt and the excess of flowy fabric. The accompanying blouse and off-the- shoulder sleeves were baggy and yet restrictive simultaneously. It took her glancing in the mirror to figure out she was dressed like some kind of bar wench, and she rebelled at the implications of it.
Instead of tearing it off and discarding the dress in a heap, she grabbed a pair of scissors from off her desk and cut a thigh length slit up her skirt. Then she unclasped her bra and left it draped across her bed. Finally, she found the darkest shade of red lipstick in her bag and fixed her make-up.
Whatever her mother had scheduled, Lena wasn’t about to let it get in the way of the plans she made with Kara.
She no sooner stomped her way back down the stairs when Lillian emerged beside her to drag her into the basement.
Lex’s man cave was decked out with tawdry-looking wooden tables and chairs, and the bar was done up with a cauldron of witch’s brew for the adults and plastic pitchers of butterbeer for kids.
“You’ll be manning the tavern as the treasure hunt begins. Don’t give in to the pirates too soon. It will build suspense,” Lillian explained, clearly expecting Lena to understand what the hell that all meant.
“What pirates?” Lena asked in exasperation. She slid behind the bar to find a large wooden chest tucked off to the side and shot her mother a curious look as she pieced things together.
“Oh, you’ll see.” Lillian proudly gloated and dusted several children with glitter on her way out of the tavern.
Lena served up little mugs of butterbeer to all sorts of devils and princesses, and only drank half a glass of the witch’s brew while she waited.
Kids came and went with empty bags clutched in their hands, and Lena wondered if Kara was having any fun out there without her.
The fleeting thought was all she managed as a sudden influx of children in a variety of costumes ran down the stairs with eye patches and plastic hooks. Their excited chattering was all backed by the unmistakable voice of the woman she loved elongating a few hearty Yaaarrs.
It took real effort to hold back her laughter as Kara sauntered into the basement with a plastic sword strapped to her hip, clad in full pirate garb.
