Lena just managed to smooth her robe back into place when James opened the door to the large walk-in pantry. The kitchen looked disastrous and battle-strewn with bags of flour spilled on the floor and broken jars at their feet.
James clocked the mess and an easy smile curled at his lips. “Hey, I was going to ask if you needed some help making breakfast, but it seems like Kara’s already scrambling your eggs.”
Lena attempted to be neutral in responding to that rude comment. “Oh. No. I’m just too short to reach the top shelves and I knocked a few things down while reaching.”
“Someone’s definitely reaching,” James retorted with laughter on the back of his tongue and wide eyes.

Meanwhile, Kara ushered her into her usual seat at the table, and Lena was taken aback by the direct way both of the alphas butted heads to impress her. They bumped into each other’s shoulders at every opportunity, and they picked up the same packet of bacon. Kara ripped it straight from James’ hands and he scoffed as he pulled a loaf of bread out.
“You know, I don’t really have much of an appetite in the morning,” Lena intoned in the hopes of stopping the spectacle of egos.
She also didn’t feel capable of eating that much when her morning queasiness was bizarrely worse. James choked her with his proud pheromones, and Lena wondered if vomiting would bring an immediate end to the gag-worthy contest that was taking place in her kitchen.
Kara sliced up fresh ginger to create a drink that normally squashed Lena’s morning sickness and hurried the brimming glass over to her. “Sip this, and by the time you finish it, I’m sure you’ll get your appetite back.”
James noticed the kind gesture and how Lena responded with relief to drinking it. “What’s that? A special drink? You like refreshing drinks in the morning? I can whip you up something really special.”
“I’ve already given Lena what she needs,” Kara mentioned in passing and moved between the stove and the cupboards to get the plates ready before any of the food had cooked. “Why don’t you sit down, James? You’re only getting in my way.”
The slight, enigmatic smirk on Kara’s lips felt personal, and Lena soon realized the only thing worse than having James in her kitchen was his presence at the table. His dark eyes and lazy smile were trained on her, and she tried not to glance in his direction while Kara’s seed slowly trickled out of her cunt. James decided to shoot his shot and glanced to Lena with entreating, lustful eyes. “Yeah, you must be cold in that little robe. You want me to stick around and keep you warm?”
It was a tad cruel to hesitate to answer after Kara pounded her throughout the kitchen more times than a kneaded dough. Lena sipped her drink and flicked her lashes between them just to make Kara even more wildly jealous.
“I’m going to bundle up and head out to tend to the animals this morning.” Lena finished her drink and set the glass down, leaving much of her breakfast untouched. “I need to shovel out a couple of pens. Are you up for that?”
As a city dweller herself, Lena knew that few other things would deter James from staying like cleaning up horse shit. She saw the glimmer of fear in his eyes and how he backed towards the door without Kara needing to put extra pressure on him. Kara shoved him a little anyway, and Lena smiled as James tried to backtrack.
“I actually forgot about some errands I need to run.” James scrunched his face up in determination to name one. “Gotta stop at the store and pick up my dry cleaning. Busy week ahead at work.”
“Well it sure was nice to see you.” Kara cut him off before he rambled further excuses, and herded him out of the house so fast that she shut the door on his foot. “We’ll catch up after the Holidays. Maybe.”
He grunted in pain, and Kara pretended not to hear him in the ensuing struggle to free his boot. She latched the lock once he was gone and dusted her hands like she had taken out the trash.
It didn’t seem to matter that this wasn’t her home, or that Lena didn’t belong to her in any way, shape, or form.

Lena knew she would have been better off eating toast and eggs, but instead she stubbornly grabbed her own coat. “We can both do it.”
Kara appeared ready to argue, but she shut her mouth and headed out to shovel manure in a way Lena somehow found attractive.

“Only because you blew it out earlier,” Lena quipped and tossed off the blanket to march into the kitchen. “I just have a lot to do before everyone arrives. I need to hide all of the evidence that I’m pregnant.”
She swiped up her pre-natal vitamins and started stacking her parenting books in a box. Even a single clue would tip-off Sam, and then Lena would never hear the end of it. Sam would go into protective mode and show up at her house every day when she already had enough stress of her own.

“You want boundaries for peeling potatoes?” Kara blinked, clearly not in tune with Lena’s tendency to interpret every comment as a cryptic message.
“Sex,” Lena corrected and slid by Kara to begin putting ingredients into a roasting pan. “You’re my neighbor, and you’re already like family because Sam is married to your sister. On top of that, you’re my vet. If we’re also going to be friends with benefits, shouldn’t we figure out some more ground rules? I don’t want this to become messy.”
Kara turned to her and sidled closer with an intrigued glance down at Lena’s thighs that she couldn’t disguise.
“Okay, that’s a fair point. The last thing I want to do is make our lives harder so a few rules should help with that. Why don’t you tell me yours and I’ll see if there’s any I want to add?” Kara suggested and leaned her hip into the counter. “Sexually active member of society. Got it,” Kara exhaled in a rush and moved toward the fridge to lift out the giant glazed ham that would take hours to slow cook.
Lena sucked on her teeth while she regarded Kara and her nonchalant way of handling her demands. Kara seasoned the counter along with the meat and her wide eyes tracked Lena across the kitchen as she laughed indignantly. “That should go both ways.”

needs when they arise.” Lena scoffed and wondered why she saw this as adversarial instead of mutually beneficial for them both. She assumed it came down to the vulnerability of admitting she needed Kara to provide her with what she currently lacked, and because of that she set harsher restrictions that her omega didn’t sign off on. “That being said, I’m not about to call you in the middle of the night, and I don’t expect you to drop everything to come over whenever I say I could use a good pounding.”
“Right, I can’t just leave a job, and I need to sleep as much as the next person. I’m pretty flexible during the evenings, and I’m free most weekends, depending on emergency call outs. If you’re good with that, so am I.” Kara rolled her shoulders and stuck her hand out like she expected Lena to shake on it.
Lena did shake on it, and then she turned around to stop Kara from glimpsing the irritation on her face. She wondered how they would pass the time until dinner and concluded that she should wash the scent of Kara off her skin before her guests arrived.
“Good, now that we’ve resolved all of that, I’m going to take a shower.” Lena pinned her neighbor with a stare and hurried out of the room and into the upstairs bathroom suite.
Out of spite, she scrubbed herself down twice and carefully cleansed the place between her thighs. “Ka-raaa!” The littlest Danvers called out and rushed forward to greet her aunt with a big toothy grin.
Emily giggled as Kara lifted her up, and Ruby headed over to give her a hug, too.
“So, where is our host?” Alex asked and craned her head to look for Lena, who materialized seconds later.
“Right here, and apparently late to my own dinner,” Lena chuckled and opened her arms to hug Sam like she hadn’t seen her a few days ago.
Nobody except for Kara was aware that the lipstick she wore had been liberally re-applied. She pointedly refused to look at Kara in case her libido betrayed her in front of her friend.
“Wow!” Emily gasped and pointed to Lena’s dress with fascination. She wiggled until Kara passed her over to Lena.

“Lena you’ve outdone yourself. This smells fantastic,” Alex stated and headed over to the oven to help Kara take the food out. “Why don’t you guys take the kids to the table, and we’ll bring everything over?”
Sam grinned at her mate and slid her arm through Lena’s to guide her to the dining room with Ruby leading the way. “I knew there was a reason I married you.”
“There are several, and I love you too,” Alex quipped as she proudly postured with a spatula in her hand to plate the potatoes.
Sam fluttered her lashes and then turned her hawkish eyes onto Lena the moment the alphas were out of earshot. “Why are you dressed to the nines for a family dinner? Did the double date go well? Are you going out with him again tonight?”
“Him? Oh. No. God no. We didn’t hit it off at all.” Lena regretted that she happened to be distracted, since her slip-up instantly piqued Sam’s curiosity. She played it off and stroked back a few loose strands of her hair. “You forget I used to dress up all of the time when I went out in the city. I won’t get many chances to wear this now that I’m living out here.”
She also didn’t expect to fit in the dress for the whole duration of her pregnancy, but she didn’t tell Sam that she had concerns it would be too small soon. Her anxieties must have registered on her face because Sam grabbed her hand and dropped her voice to a more soothing tone.
“I know this is a big adjustment for you. I’m still surprised you decided to move here. You loved the city life — all of the restaurants, the clubs, the culture.” Sam pulled a napkin onto her lap and kept her head down like she was reminiscing about the good times they had together in the past. “Sometimes I still miss it. Why did you trade all of that for a farm in the middle of nowhere?”
“You’re my family. I like it here, and I needed to make some big changes.” Lena practiced that excuse in the mirror so many times before packing up her entire apartment. It sounded genuine, and at least the part about their relationship was true. She considered Sam her family, although her eyes roamed to the floor as she thought about the fetus inside of her and the secrets she wasn’t able to face.
Alex came into the dining room with the large honey ham on a platter. “You moved here at the perfect time. If this is your idea of a small Sunday dinner, I can’t wait for Christmas.”
“We’re doing Christmas all together?” Kara asked with a happy smile that she peculiarly turned onto Lena.
“This is the first I’m hearing about it,” Lena blandly explained, because if she said anything else, the risk of genuine excitement might ruin her perfectly laid out plan of appearing aloof.
She resented the quickened beat of her heart and how her breath stalled in her lungs when Kara sat across from her at the table.

“To be fair, that’s very on brand for my parents,” Lena interjected and regretted the joke when she saw how upset Kara looked on her behalf.
Lena lifted the glass of wine Sam poured for her without thinking. Fortunately the alcohol never managed to touch her tongue, and she sat it down abruptly and hoped Kara hadn’t noticed her near-slip.
“Well, you’re joining us this year, and likely every year after that until you find yourself an alpha you want to pop out–” Sam faltered mid-sentence as Alex cleared her throat. She blinked at her inquisitive pups who were hanging on her every word and sputtered, “Gum. Pop gum with–”
“I don’t foresee myself wanting to blow bubbles or anything else for a long while. I’m content by myself,” Lena candidly remarked and flicked her eyes to Kara as she realized how that sounded.
Kara’s smile was tenser than her shoulders, but she kept her head down and scooped roast potatoes and carrots onto her plate.
Neither of them were ready for Alex broaching the topic of romance next. “I heard it went well with Eve last night. She was all smiles this morning when I saw her at the bakery. Are you going to call her later?”
“She’s really sweet, but it would feel a little weird to date her because she’s always with the kids and I’ve known her since pre-school.” Kara stared owlishly at her sister like she hoped that was reason enough to drop it.
“Speaking of school, what about Miss Lane?” Sam uttered and turned her attention to Kara. “She was Ruby’s teacher last year and I hear she’s still single.”
“Lucy is single?” Alex asked, and while that was a perfectly innocent and reasonable question, Kara’s piqued interest was not.
Lena glared at the idiot as she sat up straighter, and then she felt a strange tension across her chest as she saw a smile form on Kara’s lips.
Kara noticed the affronted expression on Lena’s face and dropped her shoulders back to a normal height. “I don’t know if Lucy would be interested in me. Besides, being single isn’t all that bad.”
Alex made a noise of judgmental disagreement and helped herself to another portion of ham. “How long has it been since you got lai—layered up—and—ah, played in the snow? With an omega.”
Ruby stopped scratching her fork through her mashed potatoes and looked straight at Alex.
Kara began to respond with the truth, but the moment she breathed out “Hours,” Lena kicked her beneath the table and the sounds transformed to “Ooowwers.”
“Shouldn’t we choose a more appropriate topic for dinner conversation?” Lena shrilly demanded and played it off like she was worried about corrupting the oblivious children at the table.
“All I’m saying is that I think Lucy is your type, Kara.” Alex waved her fork at her sister with a piece of roasted carrot attached to it. “She’s sophisticated and attractive. You want a big family, and she loves kids. Plus, you’ve been lonely for a long time, so what do you have to lose?”
“Lonely?” Kara chuckled awkwardly at Alex’s assessment of her and shook her head. “I’m busy taking care of all of the animals in this town. I’ve been here helping Lena get settled on the rare days I’ve had off.”
Sam peered down at Lena’s hand as she passed the pepper to Kara with precise timing.
“See, this is why we invite you to parties,” Alex lectured in between sipping wine and tasting her dinner. “You can’t live your life for work. You’ve got to put yourself out there and meet people.”
Sam shifted with a sly glance at Kara and poured the kids some water. “Which reminds me, you’re coming to the New Year's party, right?”
Kara puffed out her cheeks and looked ready to decline the offer until Alex put her fork down. “Golly, I’ve been so busy, I’ll have to think about it.”
“No way, you loved going to the city for Halloween,” Sam protested and elbowed Lena to get her in on the orchestrated peer pressure. “Tell her she can’t miss this, Lena.”
For a precious second Lena’s motor functions shut down and she stared unblinking at her meal. She jolted out of it due to the adrenaline and panic that rushed through her veins.
“You were at the Halloween party?” Lena breathed and swallowed thickly.
“Yeah, she rocked up as The Mandalorian, didn’t you, you big nerd?” Alex teased and reached out to slap Kara on the shoulder.
Kara shrugged her off with a sigh and stole a roasted potato from Alex’s plate. “Hey, I wasn’t the only one. A lot of people dressed as The Mandalorian.”
