St. Patrick’s Day ranked high on Lena’s list of favorite holidays, and not just because of her Irish blood. There was no obligation to spend the day with her family and she loved Guinness. She didn’t need any excuses to indulge in a pint, but she did a yearly toast to her heritage anyway, and on the off chance she happened to be in the company of any family members, she could at least get drunk enough to enjoy it for a change.
One problem was that her brother Lex was an Aries. Most of the time, Lena just sent a card without getting roped into an actual celebration, except Lex had the brilliant idea of throwing a party on St. Patrick's Day that year. He craftily sent the invitation to Kara, who RSVP’ed with the misguided belief that Lena wouldn’t want to miss it.
“Kara, I come from a family of Irish and German people, do you have any clue what your hangover will be like?”
Lena should have known her grave warning would only offend her mate.
Kara straightened to her full height and grinned at Lena while she postured with an absurd amount of bravado. “Hey, I can handle a drink. We did meet in a bar, after all.”
“Yeah, so, here’s the thing. I’ve seen you start to slur your words after four beers or a couple of glasses of wine. Which is normal, to be fair, but that?” Lena pressed her lips together and shook her head. The pity she directed towards Kara was laid on thick and she gave the alpha a light pat on her bicep as she imparted some harsh truth. “That’s like, the pre-drinksfor the drinks we’ll be having at Lex’s party. Do you see where I’m going with this?”
Kara squinted back at her with pursed lips, and after a moment of prolonged silence, she came to the wrong conclusion. “You think I’ll tap out before the night is fun, but I won’t. I love parties and celebrating your heritage.”
“Oh, my buff himbo genius,” Lena sighed and touched Kara’s face like she was a poor waif of a thing, incapable of holding her own with the rest of her in-laws.
“That’s an oxymoron.” Kara laughed and wrapped her arms around Lena with nothing but adoration on her handsome face.
“You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into, or the peer pressure that’s going to have you drunk off your ass.” Lena didn’t have the heart to paint a better picture for her mate.
Kara would discover her mistakes soon enough, and Lena wasn’t sure if it would be hilarious or disastrous. As a Luthor, she should have known it would be a mixture of both. She had seen family members search the cabinets and drink the vanilla extract after cleaning the house out of cases of liquor.
Lex stocked up the home bar with everyone’s favorites and ordered catering for over fifty people. He liked to entertain as much as their mother did, but he didn’t get hung up on the minute details like decorations or a guest list. Lena wasn’t prepared to walk in and meet his new girlfriend dressed head-to-toe in green and shamrocks.
Eve Teschmacher gave off manic pixie dream girl vibes, and with Lillian’s complete approval, she created a lot of party games that Lex never would have agreed to play on his own.
“Oh, good, your sister is finally here!” Eve clapped her hands and stomped her heels on the carpet in excitement. She came to a mesmerized stop as Kara walked in toting a huge present.
Then came the hugs. Multiple hugs, not just one.
“God, I figured anyone who dated my brother would have more intellect,” Lena muttered under her breath with a leery glance at Kara, who was still recovering from getting squeezed so many times.
“Something tells me he’s interested in her other attributes.” Kara tilted her head and grimaced as she nodded to where Lex was blatantly looking down Eve’s shirt while she bounced joyfully in front of him.
“Let’s go get drinks. Right now.” Lena headed off to the bar in disgust with the distinct feeling they would need the alcohol just to get through the meet-and-greets. She poured two shots of Jameson and slid one to Kara who was eyeing up the pretty bottle display of Bailey’s with keen interest.
“You know, I’ve never actually tried that and it sounds delicious.” Kara raised her brows hopefully and leaned closer to the display with the intent to help herself.
It wasn’t just Kara’s sweet tooth that drew her to that drink. It was the alcohol content, which was much lower than straight Whiskey. Lena smirked at her mate’s clever scheme and put an end to it before she could pour herself a single sip.
“And you probably won’t get that chance tonight because those are for my mother and her cousins.” Lena carefully set the Bailey’s aside and ignored the hawkish way several of the older omegas watched them at the bar.
“But there’s six bottles,” Kara pointed out in bewilderment. Her smile was baffled but adorable, and she blinked at the rest of the bar as if just realizing it was better stocked than most liquor stores.
“And if you want to keep all ten of your fingers, you’ll steer clear of them,” Lena cautioned.
She motioned to the shot of Jameson as she lifted up her own. Over Kara’s shoulder she could see her mother approaching, and if that wasn’t incentive enough to swallow back the amber liquid, seeing her father dressed up as leprechaun did the trick.
“Your mom loves me and would totally share.” Kara’s smug reminder was funnier when she slammed back the shot and her face twisted in revulsion. “Oh god, it’s like paint thinner.”
Lena passed her a can of Guinness to chase it and smirked at the way Kara gulped it down without breathing. “Pace yourself, darling, or you’ll be smashed before you’re through all the introductions, and everyone will brand you a light-weight.”
“How does your liver still function?” Kara balked.
She would have to wait for an answer because Lillian cooed her name from across the room and all of her cousins flocked around them.
“Kara, you remember Great Aunt Johanna and all of my cousins, don’t you? From left to right: Eileen, Susan, Bridget and Kate.”
Lillian allowed her family the space for greetings and looped her arm over Kara’s shoulder in welcome.
Lena smirked at the touchy-feely members of her family and how her mother passed Kara around from bosom to bosom. The scent of Guerlain Shalimar and Chanel No. 5 was going to be all over Kara by the end of the night.
“It’s so nice to see you all again,” Kara managed in between smotherings. “How has everyone been?”
“We were just talking about how muscular you are,” Eileen cut in, stealing the much coveted spotlight from her sisters. “I baked you a loaf of my famous soda bread, but Susan said you probably don’t even eat carbs.”
“Are you kidding? I love carbs. I eat them all of the time and I’m excited to try your soda bread.” Kara reached out for the saran-wrapped gift with a joyful smile.
“Yeah, because it’ll help soak up all of the alcohol you’re going to consume tonight,” Lena whispered slyly.
Kara’s flustered complexion gave away her guilt, though nobody else caught on to it. She tore into the cling wrap to break a chunk off the farl, but Bridget put a stop to it before her lips could even part.
“Whoa there, you can’t go digging into it without a good lashing of Irish butter.” Bridget took Kara by the shoulder in an attempt to lead her off to one of tables that was lined with an abundance of food. “Eileen's soda bread is dryer than her husband's personality.”
“Don’t be listening to Bridget. She’s still bitter that her alpha prefers my Guinness cake to hers,” Eileen cut in, and slipped her arm through Kara’s like she meant to wrestle her out of Bridget's clutches.
“Ladies, let’s not dig up old drama in front of our guest,” Lillian intercepted Kara with wide eyes that warned her family to tone it down.
Lena knew from experience that it wouldn’t work. She snorted at the petulant behavior of the older omegas, who held grudges and never held their tongues.
“What guest?” Susan chimed in and used the question as an excuse to squeeze Kara’s bicep. “Kara’s part of the family, and it’s time she knew the ins and outs of it. Like the reason we don’t let Kate in the kitchen on account of her pyro tendencies.”
“You drop one candle and suddenly everyone fears for their lives,” Kate bemoaned and pointed at Susan in accusation. “Maybe if your cake had been baked better, the icing wouldn’t have slid off it.”
“That tablecloth belonged to my mother and you singed the Virgin Mary right off it!” Susan ranted, as if the debacle had happened yesterday and not two decades ago.
“You know I think I’ll just save the soda bread for later and go wish Lex a quick happy birthday.” Kara tucked the farl beneath her arm like a football and extracted herself out of the group of omegas while she still had the chance.
“Wise choice,” Lena snickered and made her own escape before her mother’s cousins roped her into any discussion of babies.
She walked off to the parlor where Lex was lurking with a couple of friends. Kara juggled her soda bread and the huge present for her brother-in-law.
“Hey, Lex, this is a pre-release gadget that I thought you would like.” Kara placed the box in front of him and lifted up the paper-wrapped lid to reveal a robotic sleeve and an eye-piece.
Lena took it upon herself to explain the gift. “It’s like VR, but better, because the robotics communicate with your nerves to deliver a real, visceral experience. Soon everyone will have one.”
“Just wanted I’ve always needed. This will revolutionize game-play,” Lex replied with genuine appreciation. He marveled over the tech by turning it in his hands and checking out its basic components. “Though there are certain aspects of the gaming world I’d rather not experience first-hand. Tea-bagging comes to mind.”
“Tea bags?” Eve cocked her head like a confused puppy.
“Not the kind you keep in the kitchen.” Lena responded with alarm to the direction the conversation was taking. “On that note, maybe we should play some actual party games.”
She normally wouldn’t put herself through that torture, but it was a much better option than explaining anything to her brother’s naïve girlfriend.
“Hey, that’s a wonderful idea,” Eve squeakily declared and hurried off to gather a bunch of supplies.

If you manage to pop the balloon without using your hands on the first try, you win the prize inside!”
“What happens if you don’t pop it?” Kara asked with a crinkle between her brows that said she was taking the rules seriously.
“Someone else gets the opportunity to either keep their prize, or trade it in for a chance to win yours.” Eve’s excitement wasn’t nearly as contagious as she probably hoped. But she twirled to show off the abundance of stickers that littered her minidress. “Everyone gets one sticker, except for Lex, who gets two because it’s his birthday.”
“There’s no way my brother will go along with this,” Lena drawled with the full knowledge that Lex scoffed at party games and the embarrassment of anyone forcing him to play them.
“I don’t know about that,” Kara muttered with a vague gesture in his direction. “He seems pretty happy that he’s getting his hands on her lucky charms.”
Kara wasn’t wrong.
Lena stared at Lex’s enthusiastic way of practically cupping his girlfriend’s tits to

“Did I mention the top prize is a week in the Bahamas, all inclusive?” Eve lilted when it seemed nobody else planned to participate. Eve hadn’t lied when she said everyone would need luck on their side to find a balloon with the corresponding numbers.
Lena waded through a lot of them and glanced at the digits, some of which exceeded four numbers.
In the middle of the chaos, Lex sent his friends to search different rooms, and while everyone was distracted, he dragged Eve upstairs with a lecherous grin.
Lena was disgusted, but mostly at herself for not thinking of luring Kara off for
some private fun while everyone else was busy.
She returned to Kara, who Eileen had cajoled into searching the top section of a balloon arch. Several of the older omegas were uttering their own numbers so Kara would look for them.
“5964,” Eileen repeated with an expectant look up at Kara.

“I think Sean’s found your number,” Lena lied and pointed to Susan’s husband and the total of five helium balloons he managed to tangle himself in.
“Thank you,” Kara wheezed the moment Lena took her by the hand and rushed them into one of the parlors.

From the awkward way her father shuffled to his feet and stood precariously behind Lillian, Lena was certain she made the right choice.

Lena could tell Kara was staring at them just from the horrified silence. She nudged her mate out of her fugue state, and Kara gallantly rescued them from the awkwardness by snatching up the closest balloons and high-tailing it out of there.
“So that just happened. Do you need a minute to process?” Kara’s polite way of handling it would have worked with anyone else who functioned normally.
Lena just wasn’t that person. Her method of dealing with her parents being horrifically in love and still sexually active was to get black-out drunk.
“Oh, we’re not discussing it. In fact, there’s enough whiskey here for us to go blind, so let’s grab a bottle for the long ride home.”
“We can’t go yet,” Kara laughed and tried to lead Lena over to the side so they could talk.

Lena didn’t care how humiliating it was to participate in the competition, providing they won it.
