“Are you going to tell me anything about those enemies?” Kara resisted settling down without getting some more details about the threats she faced.
“Right now, I’m the most concerned about Bruno Manheim.” Lena reached over to grab the laptop again and pulled up a profile of the man in question. “He’s a former associate of mine. He used to just focus his energies on laundering money for someone I hate, but now he’s trying to kill me. Those were his henchmen that boarded my ship tonight.”
Kara stared at Bruno’s blocky features and deep-set eyes and tried to imagine why he would send assassins after Lena. “Tell me more. I might be able to convince my team to re-direct our attention onto Manheim.”
Lena shoved the laptop back onto the night stand. “That’s the last thing I want. If a need arises to keep your agents busy, I’m capable of coming up with more safe decoy missions.”
That candid tidbit of information raised Kara’s eyebrows in surprise and offense. “More? You’ve been sending us on decoy missions? For how long?”
“Years,” Lena laughed and didn’t stop until she picked up on Kara’s changing moods. “Don’t get upset. I should at least get points for being honest with you. I’m not in this business to hurt anyone and the LESBs hold a special place in my heart. You’re all lambs who are trying to run with lions.”
Kara wanted to argue with that assessment, but her counterpoints would be weak. She couldn’t even differentiate between the fake missions and the real ones. All she did was shake her head and gawk down at her enemy-turned-lover.
“I’m not—I’m not a lamb,” Kara sputtered and finally succumbed to her desire to be near Lena. She flopped down beside all of the pillows and leaned into Lena’s open arms.
“Maybe not.” Lena squinted as if actually reconsidering her position on that. “Not many lambs would wittingly come this close to danger. You’re something else, Kara Danvers. I’m not sure what that is yet.”
Kara didn’t know how to take that, or whether it was complimentary – but she didn’t dwell on it with Lena holding her close.
